The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Description: O livro Trabalho (imaterial), valor e classes sociais: diálogos com pesquisadores contemporâneos traz à luz um debate que se estruturou em meados dos anos 1970 na Europa e nos Estados Unidos, que se difundiu no Brasil, mais fortemente, nos anos 1990 e que nos anos 2000 ainda se faz presente. No cerne desse debate está a tese da superação da sociedade industrial e, com ela, dos conceitos marxistas de trabalho, valor e classes sociais. Neste livro, entrevistamos 22 pesquisadores contemporâneos, procurando questioná-los exatamente sobre tais temas. Os questionamentos se orientaram, primeiro, no sentido de problematizarmos, para a realidade contemporânea, a tese sobre o fim da sociedade industrial e, segundo, ao destacar as particularidades da pesquisa e dos estudos de cada entrevistado, explorando temas sociais, históricos, econômicos e filosóficos centrais presentes nas sociedades contemporâneas. Assim, além de expormos um leque variado de interpretações sobre o trabalho, o trabalho imaterial, o valor e as classes sociais, há neste livro um conjunto de formulações teóricas que podem nos ajudar a compreender as relações sociais que constituem as sociedades no século XXI. Além disso, contamos com o prefácio de Alfredo Saad Filho (Soas-UK) e com o posfácio de Giovanni Alves (Unesp-Marília), que nos trouxeram apontamentos importantes, seja sobre a importância e a pertinência teórica e social das entrevistas, seja sobre a conjuntura social que dá base para nosso livro.

Description: Even today, Italians tend to adopt a double imagine of their national character, played on the contrast between an evolved and conscious minority (‘us’) and a backward and typically pre-modern majority (‘them’). As Giulio Bollati has shown better than any other in a famous essay, this self-representation draws its origins first of all from the period between the late Enlightenment and the early Napoleonic age, in which for the first time the Peninsula was called to deal with the models imposed by the great European modernization. The paper aims to reconstruct the process that led some of the most prominent political thinkers of this years (Baretti, Verri, Gioia, Botta, Cuoco) to adopt the image mentioned above - and this privileging the approach of the constitutional history.

Description: “A literatura movente de Chimamanda Adichie é um livro que, ao trazer uma análise da prosa da escritora que dá nome ao título, explica por que ela tem sido lida e aclamada mundialmente: as temáticas, personagens e enredos de Adichie criam identificação profunda com leitoras e leitores de diversas culturas. Cláudio R. V. Braga perpassa as narrativas de Adichie, principalmente o romance Americanah, discutindo o papel da mulher na atualidade, baseando-se sobretudo na personagem Ifemelu. Quais são as expectativas, angústias e vivências dessa jovem mulher africana, negra e imigrante, oriunda de um país pós-colonial? Existe livre-arbítrio ou as circunstâncias determinam a vida? Qual a relação entre o presente e o passado pós-colonial de pessoas cujos países passaram pelo trauma da colonização europeia? O autor também se dedica à questão da mobilidade humana contemporânea, concebida literariamente por Adichie. Braga investiga a prosa de Chimamanda Adichie, escritora contemporânea globalmente conhecida, propondo uma perspectiva de mundo caracterizada pela pós-colonialidade, que é uma condição dos dias de hoje, perpassada por processos complexos de descolonização cultural e de mobilidade humana em escala global. Un percorso di ricerca-formazione che ha coinvolto il gruppo di ricerca del Dipartimento di Scienze Umanistiche Sociali e della Formazione (S.U.S.e F.) dell’Università degli Studi del Molise e l’Istituto Omnicomprensivo G. Spataro con sede a Gissi (CH) negli anni scolastici 2020-21 e 2021-2022, il volume si propone di riflettere, in chiave di sostenibilità, sui processi di insegnamento e apprendimento che avvengono nelle pluriclassi, sia come modello didattico, sia come sistema-ambiente dedicato allo sviluppo delle competenze. Description: In the continuation of what has been produced in the series "Risks and Disasters", this volume assumes the thematic continuity, in a more systematic and holistic logic. It concerns, in particular, the theme of "Anthropic disasters. An integral approach", so it is a very unusual character. Let's say that the type of risks it deals with, the synthesis nature it presents and the organizational structure chosen, gives it a singular character in the contemporary world context. In the path of anthropic disasters, two major risk groups were considered, namely technological and social. The first relate to structural systems to support human activity, such as transport, civil construction, urban spaces (fires, waste) and water resources. The second is associated with social action, and it addresses issues ranging from conflict to Urbicicide.

Description: The contribution proposes a reflection on the greatest author of the 18th Century Italian theater who drew on the dramaturgical heritage of the siglos de oro. The main elements dealt with are: Carlo Gozzi's theoretical reflection on the characteristics of Spanish theater; the fundamental role in the repêchage that the actors of Antonio Sacco's company had in that theater, for which the author provided - according to him - a "voluntary friendly assistance"; finally, the most significant data that emerge, or could emerge, from the first National Edition of the works of Carlo Gozzi (launched in 2011).

Description: The book develops a reflection, shared by the authors, regarding some pedagogical phenomena which individuals and social groups have been involved in, thanks to theoretical and empirical analyses centred on case studies and articulated on two fronts. Tra i cantari antichi, databili cioè entro il XIV secolo, la Guerra di Troia è un esempio del tutto singolare, per le sue ampie dimensioni e per la sua dipendenza da fonti scritte. Quasi un poema, pur nelle vesti di un cantare, essa è prova del grande impatto che ebbero, non solo presso il pubblico dei mercanti, ma anche presso uditorî piú vasti, materie fortunatissime come quella troiana, che a partire dal Roman de Troie di Benoît de Sainte-Maure (XII secolo) si sono spinte dal centro alla periferia della letteratura romanza medievale.

Description: Nell’affascinante mondo della cultura open, dopo software open source, standard aperti, open access e open content, il fenomeno dei dati aperti rappresenta l’ultima frontiera e forse anche quella attualmente più strategica. Alla fine degli anni 2000 si è infatti aperto il dibattito sull’importanza della disponibilità e libera diffusione di dati “crudi” (anche e soprattutto da parte del settore pubblico) così da poter aumentare il potenziale informativo e comunicativo della conoscenza condivisa figlia della rivoluzione digitale. Description: European visual culture changed so fundamentally in the 13th century that, in retrospect, we perceive an epochal boundary – the stylistic change from Romanesque to Gothic, the transition from the High to the Late Middle Ages. Some of the foundations for this were laid in the previous century. Thus the developments initiated in the masons' lodges of northern France in the middle of the 12th century not only led to the great architectural achievements of the 13th century, but also to common standards in the sculpture of Western, Central and partly Southern Europe. Another important impulse came with the conquest of Constantinople in 1204. The half-familiar, half-exotic visual media of Byzantine art were mainly received in Central Europe and Italy, leading to the development of specific art forms that were distinct from Western painting. These achievements were complemented by literary production, which took on an unprecedented scale. In addition to the almost boundless quantities of religious writings and specialist literature, mainly written in Latin, the tradition of extensive profane poetry in national languages, which began at the end of the 12th century, intensified. The latter is evidenced by a growing readership outside spiritual institutions and the manufacturing structures that were formed to meet the new demand. This was inevitably accompanied by innovations in book illumination and the creation of new secular picture cycles. Which of the aforementioned dynamics were decisive in each individual case and whether there were other important factors that contributed to this development was the subject of an international conference that took place in 2017 at the Art History Institute of Vienna University under the title "Image- and Book-Culture in 13th-Century Europe", the results of which are presented in this volume. The contributions approach various aspects of the developments from different angles. They offer a range of current research, including approaches from the history of ideas and media research, as well as findings on recipients, networks, the transfer of objects and technical innovations based on detailed analyses. The starting point is formed by images - paintings and sculptures, stationary as well as mobile, publically accessible as well as private.

Jahrhundert veränderte sich die europäische Bildkultur so grundlegend, dass wir im Rückblick eine Epochengrenze wahrnehmen - den Stilwechsel von der Romanik zur Gotik, den Übergang vom Hoch- zum Spätmittelalter. Einige der Voraussetzungen hierfür wurden noch im vorangegangenen Jahrhundert geschaffen, wie die in den nordfranzösischen Bauhütten des mittleren 12. Jahrhunderts eingeleiteten Entwicklungen, die sich in weiten Teilen Europas durchsetzten und im 13. Jahrhundert nicht nur zu großartigen architektonischen Leistungen, sondern auch zu gemeinsamen Standards in der Plastik West-, Mittel- und teils auch Südeuropas führten. Einen weiteren wichtigen Impuls brachte die Eroberung Konstantinopels 1204, in deren Anschluss die halb vertrauten, halb fremden visuellen Medien der byzantinischen Kunst vor allem in Mitteleuropa und Italien verarbeitet wurden und zur Entwicklung einer eigenen, von der westlichen abgrenzbaren Malerei führten. Diesen Leistungen ist die literarische Produktion an die Seite zu stellen, die ein bis dahin unbekanntes Ausmaß annahm: Neben der nahezu unüberschaubaren Zahl überwiegend in Latein verfasster (und damit überregional rezipierbarer) religiöser Schriften und Fachliteratur vor allem für Juristen, aber auch für Ärzte und Astrologen wurde die im ausgehenden 12. Jahrhundert begonnene Tradition umfangreicher profaner Dichtungen in den Landessprachen verstärkt fortgesetzt. Die Zunahme dieser Literatur belegt eine wachsende Leserschaft außerhalb geistlicher Institutionen, und es bildeten sich Herstellungsstrukturen aus, die diesen Bedarf decken konnten. Dass damit Innovationen in der Buchmalerei einhergingen und neue weltliche Bildprogramme geschaffen wurden, ist naheliegend. Welche der genannten Dynamiken im Einzelfall entscheidend waren, wie sich diese äußerten und ob es weitere wichtige Faktoren gab, die zu dieser Entwicklung beitrugen, war Gegenstand einer international besetzten Tagung, die 2017 im Kunsthistorischen Institut der Universität Wien unter dem Titel „Europäische Bild- und Buchkultur im 13. Jahrhundert“ stattfand und deren Ergebnisse im vorliegenden Band präsentiert werden. Die Beiträge nähern sich der Frage nach den Charakteristiken der Entwicklung aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und bieten einen Querschnitt aktueller Forschungen, der sowohl ideengeschichtliche Ansätze wie Emotions- und Medienforschung als auch auf Detailanalysen beruhende Erkenntnisse zu Rezipienten, Netzwerken, Transfer von Objekten und Ideen sowie zur Durchsetzung technischer Innovationen einschließt. Ausgangspunkt sind Bilder - imagines, in gemalter wie plastischer, ortsfester wie beweglicher, massentauglicher wie intimer Form.

O que explica essa constância da cana-de-açúcar e dos seus derivados nas pautas de produção e de exportação brasileiras? Quais são as condicionantes físicas que explicam a expansão dos canaviais e, consequentemente, das unidades manufatureiras e industriais do açúcar, etanol e agroenergia em certas regiões do território brasileiro? Como esses determinantes, associados a fatores históricos, políticos e econômicos, levaram a arranjos territoriais e a impactos socioambientais diferenciados ao longo desses cinco séculos? Essas indagações nortearam o desdobramento dos temas tratados neste livro, descortinando um longo processo iniciado no período colonial, que aglutinou enorme quantidade de variáveis de abrangência política, econômica, social e tecnológica, ancoradas nas características físicas, sobretudo hidroclimatológicas, dos solos e do relevo das áreas onde a cana-de-açúcar, os engenhos e as usinas foram implantados.

Description: Social media are nowadays fertile ground for debates that are often rich in arguments of persuasive value. In the present writing, we hypothesize that emotions play a significant role in determining the success of arguments on social media. In order to validate the hypothesis, we analyzed Change My View, an Internet forum on Reddit where the persuasiveness of the discussions among participants is explicit and regulated by specific norms. Our analysis revealed that arguments enjoying a higher degree of success were characterized by two particular emotions: anticipation and joy, which we interpret as belonging to engagement, a more general emotional dimension that includes them both. Such characteristics of successful arguments lead us to consider the persuasive experience on social media as analogous to a playful experience. Like in a game, in order to successfully take part in such a persuasive experience, certain requirements are needed: commitment and respect for the rules as well as joyful participation.

A capacidade limitada que temos em memorizar é um recurso que os diversos avanços da Medicina e das denominadas Neuro-Ciências vêm demonstrando como uma capacidade com limites. O ser humano tem uma paixão – que poderíamos denominar como um carinho quase obsessivo – por tudo o que é limitado, contingente, transitório, escasso. As razões para essa Paixão foram escrutinadas por autores diversos, desde os Clássicos Marco Aurélio, Hegel ou Stuart Mill até autores mais atuais como Turnbull (2007) e alguns destes argumentos serão revisitados neste ensaio. No entanto, existe uma Ciência Social focada na observação das decisões humanas em ambientes de escassez – a Economia - que desde Robbins é encarada como a Ciência da Escolha. A figura de Fernão de Magalhães tem sido invocada nestes 500 anos da sua liderança da primeira viagem de circum-navegação. No entanto, toda ela é um símbolo da Economia do Esquecimento – desde o próprio que quis esquecer a origem portuguesa até à origem portuguesa que durante séculos o tentou esquecer. No entanto, 500 anos depois dessa epopeia que uniu dezenas de nacionalidades à época e que contatou com pontos tão díspares no globo como além da Europa a América do Sul ou o Japão, vemos que tais tentativas de esquecimento não foram eficazes. E essa ineficácia deve levar-nos também a ponderar se tantas vezes o Esquecimento que criamos poderá alguma vez ser-nos benéfico, sobretudo o Esquecimento das Regiões de Portugal. Este ensaio foca uma escolha em particular – o Esquecimento que todos nós praticamos, sobretudo na esfera de determinadas realidades nacionais, nomeadamente certas regiões, certos cidadãos, certos espaços. Esquecemos ou desejamos esquecer os ambientes (as experiências) onde não fomos felizes ou onde fomos pouco felizes (como Joormann e Hertel, 2005 referem); esquecemos também aqueles cenários que geraram em nós percepções de infelicidade potencial (por exemplo, uma rua escura que atravessámos a correr em determinada noite de inverno); finalmente, esquecemos os ambientes onde receamos não poder ser felizes. Do parágrafo anterior, verificamos uma linha que autores como Stuart Mill ou Jeremy Bentham apelidam de “hedonista” – tomamos decisões porque queremos ser felizes, ter mais prazer no fim do que dor ou insatisfação. Esquecer ajuda-nos a ser felizes. Aliás, autores como Maia Trigueiro (2016) vêm falando de como a exposição permanente nas atualmente denominadas redes sociais de suporte digital é uma ameaça a esse “direito ao esquecimento” que crentes católicos esperam por exemplo do padre a quem se confessaram. No entanto, as redes sociais lembram pecados antigos, asneiras ditas quando depois não as teríamos querido dizer, poses e fotos que desejámos, no final… esquecer. Este ensaio é assim um contributo para uma discussão que se impõe – quer em termos positivos quer em termos normativos. Impõe-se em termos positivos pois a diversidade de estatísticas disponíveis revela a premência do problema por uma diversidade igualmente significativa de ângulos. O esquecimento a que espaços – geográficos, humanos e sociais – estão votados por franjas significativas de portugueses é uma evidência empírica que facilmente se provará nas páginas que se seguem. O contributo presente impõe-se em termos normativos porque não só os custos de concentração somados com os custos do esquecimento se tornam claros e emergem como necessitados de correção mas também porque os ‘esquecendos’ – isto é, aqueles que vão caindo no esquecimento de quem deles se deveria lembrar – acumulam dores, pobreza e perdas de desenvolvimento que raiam – em não poucos casos – a ofensa aos seus direitos elementares – como pessoas, como cidadãos e como seres humanos. Assim, este ensaio está estruturado em sete capítulos principais. Além deste introdutório, temos um segundo capítulo que evidenciará como um espaço específico de Portugal – a região tradicionalmente identificada com Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro – está esquecida. Mostrar-se-á aí também como apesar de ser vítima de esquecimento, a região em causa não esquece o país. O terceiro capítulo discute Causas e Consequências do Esquecimento, começando pelas razões para o Esquecimento que cada um de nós tem e vai tendo em cada dia e ao longo dos dias e avançando para as razões principais para o Esquecimento de que a região é alvo; este capítulo termina listando as consequências do esquecimento aqui visado. O quarto capítulo procura ser profilático perante o problema denotado. Então, listam-se – mas também se criticam – os remédios para ‘fazer memória’. Como então se lerá, nem todos os remédios apregoados são bons, havendo maus remédios que inclusive – no final da aplicação – aprofundam ainda mais o esquecimento no lugar de o combaterem. No quinto capítulo, dissecam-se metodologicamente os que não esquecem, sobretudo os que gostam da sua região e os Emigrantes que por ela suspiram. O sexto capítulo disserta sobre os que passam pela região, sobre os que vão ficando nela e sobretudo sobre os que a guardam – os Senadores que são os mais velhos dos transmontanos e alto-durienses. Finalmente, o sétimo capítulo conclui.

Description: Em 1867, ao prefaciar uma das suas primeiras recolhas de literatura popular, Teófilo Braga, sugerindo uma imagem catastrófica da situação do país, referiu-se desta forma ao seu trabalho: "coligir a poesia popular portuguesa agora, no momento de transe, é como a garrafa ao mar que se atirava nos naufrágios: é para que se saiba que existiu este povo, que também sofreu e cantou". Tal sentimento nacionalista jamais viria a abandonar a sua obra antropológica, o que aliás se explica dada a matriz romântica em que ela assentava. E mesmo quando Teófilo Braga se orientou gradualmente para preocupações de cunho mais científico, isso não significou uma verdadeira ruptura com a perspectiva inicial. São pois os ecos da problemática da identidade nacional, na sua dupla vertente romântica e científica, que podemos reencontrar nestes Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português que, de resto, e independentemente do espírito com que foi concebida e realizada a sua colectânea, propõem ao leitor um conjunto de narrativas cujo fascínio permanece intacto, constituindo além disso um valiosíssimo acervo de informações em áreas que, como a Antropologia e a História das Mentalidades, se dão como objectivo a tarefa de reflectir sobre as múltiplas manifestações das sociedades tradicionais. Após termos procedido à publicação de O Povo Português nos Seus Costumes, Crenças e Tradições, também da autoria de Teófilo Braga, que tem sido considerada a primeira grande obra de conjunto da etnografia nacional, impunha-se esta reedição dos Contos Tradicionais do Povo Português, que decerto formam, juntamente com a recolha de Adolfo Coelho disponível nesta colecção, uma das mais importantes colectâneas de narrativas populares do nosso país. Também na presente reedição se manteve a divisão da obra em dois volumes, tal como sucedia na sua edição original.

Description: O modelo de desenvolvimento implantado no Brasil a partir do início do século XXI situa-se em um contexto de crise do ideário neoliberal e retomada do pensamento desenvolvimentista. O ideário neoliberal, hegemônico no contexto mundial a partir da década de 1980, apresentou, no final dos anos 90, sinais claros de esgotamento: altas taxas de desemprego, ampliação das desigualdades, concentração de renda, baixos índices de crescimento econômico, entre outros. A construção de alternativas exigiu repensar as relações entre o mercado, o Estado e as diferentes organizações da sociedade civil. No caso brasileiro, a proposta que se tornou hegemônica retomou princípios desenvolvimentistas de uma ação mais incisiva do Estado, tanto como planejador e articulador, quanto como financiador e agente direto em processos econômicos e sociais com vistas ao desenvolvimento. Este novo modelo incita muitas reflexões para compreender suas características e repercussões nos cenários locais e regionais.

Description: Following Fernand Braudel’s Méditerranée, historians interpreted the Mediterranean, Baltic, Atlantic, Indian Ocean or Pacific as closed maritime systems, consisting of multiple micro-environments. This essay seeks to overcome these limited perspectives and to examine, how the various seas and oceans were connected by the Vikings, the Cairo Genizah merchants and the Italian trading companies of the Middle Ages. The second part of my article “Connected Seas” examines the perception and memory of the seas as an element of maritime connectivity. It introduces the concept of realm of memory (lieu de mémoire) into maritime history and tests it in four case studies on the Sound, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the Straits of Malacca.

Description: The so-called data deluge, along with ever-increasing technological capabilities, tantalizes geographers with exciting opportunities for spatial data analysis. These opportunities come with challenges, because data and technology, alone, cannot address the pressing questions of our world. Spatial analysis, a.k.a. spatial statistics, is a lot more than colourful maps and attractive displays: still relatively underrepresented in the Italian geography, this discipline has grown from a strictly quantitative niche to part of a critical spatial science and continues to stimulate new developments in statistics because, as we know, spatial is special. This book, published in the series “New Geographies. Work Tools”, adds spatial analysis to the Italian geographer’s toolbox. Not a how-to manual, it presents some of the core analytical issues through the redundancy of narrative language and mathematical language. It traces the journey of spatial analysis from its roots in quantitative geography, GIS, and statistics, towards the definition of its own identity and the acceptance of its own relativity and limitations. It discusses the relationship of spatial analysis with GIScience and its efforts to embed critiques within its own discourse, emphasizing the role of theory, the importance of hypothesis testing, and acknowledging the ethics surrounding the use and analysis of data. A few examples illustrate practical implementations, showing the value added by spatial statistics in yielding reliable analyses that can support management decisions. It concludes with a brief outlook on the Italian geographic literature, where spatial analysis – like elsewhere – can play a role in competently accepting today’s opportunities and challenges, in a constructive dialogue within geography as a whole.

Description: Umberto Gori has held the first chair of International Relations in Italy and has been the first scholar to address a series of central topics in the analysis of foreign policy and international politics. Those who browse, even if only rapidly, his rich bibliography cannot but be struck by the great variety of the topics examined: from the first works of a predominantly legal nature, we move on to studies centered on methodological and epistemological issues, relations between states, analysis of foreign policy in general and Italian foreign policy in particular, Peace Research, strategic affairs, intelligence, and finally the impact of the information and digital revolution on international politics and contemporary strategy. What holds together so many different issues is, firstly, a constant attention to methodology and, secondly, a clear preference for a predominantly operational approach, in the belief that knowledge must always be functional to decision and action. These basic attitudes are reflected not only in his strongly characterized research agenda, but also in the twofold nature of his teaching commitment: on the one hand, Gori taught outside the university classrooms, at military and governmental institutions, for decades; on the other hand, he introduced issues traditionally reserved to diplomacy and security institutions into the Italian academic context. Such a propensity to build bridges between different worlds - academic, military, technological, diplomatic, financial - and a research vocation that has never failed make Umberto Gori a figure indissolubly linked to the birth and development of International Relations in Italy.

This course was used as a trial for the peer-review teaching method, which can be useful in classes with a high number of students; this publication also includes a selection of the best works produced by the students. The results of the trial prove the advantages of using the peer-review teaching method for other university courses, and the students' works on e-health give current medical practitioners insights on how to use ICT in their practice with skill and care.

Description: Medicine has coined the concept of 'disease', but individual patients frequently present complicated cases marked by the coexistence of several conditions or syndromes. The doctor needs to reflect on this complexity because, in his daily practice, he has to address and resolve it for a correct management of the patient. This is why we must, with genuine humility, seek to share a journey in which there are no major landmarks. The authority of the various colleagues who have contributed the different chapters can offer elements of guidance that are useful in a series based on the leitmotif of the cornerstone concepts of complexity. My thanks to those who have accepted this challenge, in the sincere hope that it may enrich us – even just a little and by slow degrees – with an enhanced capacity to address the daily issue of the complexity of the sick.

Description: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

Description: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian.

Description: As transformações no discurso do personagem Paulo Honório durante o desenrolar do romance “São Bernardo”, de Graciliano Ramos, é o centro deste estudo, que tenta evidenciar que elas ocorrem concomitantemente às mudanças ocorridas na caracterização psicológica do protagonista. Para desenvolver tal análise, o autor se utiliza das formulações teóricas de Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), para quem a prosa de ficção tem como eixo norteador uma concepção dialógica tanto das ideias quanto da linguagem veiculadas pela narrativa. A partir das definições de Bakhtin, o pesquisador demonstra que o discurso inicialmente convicto e manipulador do protagonista – predominantemente “monológico” – vai se modificando com a crescente interferência da personagem Madalena, o “outro” que porta uma consciência independente e que, aos poucos, acaba tornando o discurso de Paulo Honório, e a própria narrativa do romance, acentuadamente “dialógicos”. O autor identifica os elementos e estratégias discursivas que caracterizam essas duas instâncias no texto, interpretando a interdiscursividade, que se instaura nesse processo de mudança, como uma representação do conflito entre ideologias sociais opostas, que em vários trechos Graciliano trata usando a técnica da ironia, neste caso com forte conotação crítica.

Description: No campo da Documentação na Espanha, a Semiótica tem sido uma fonte de articulação conceitual e constitui-se uma proposição teórica relevante. Os trabalhos de teor semiótico aplicados à Documentação, iniciaram-se na década de 1980. Desde então, tem-se considerado os processos documentais como atividades semióticas por excelência, pois supõem a manipulação, a tradução, a conversão, a transmissão e a interpretação de signos. O livro pretendeu conhecer as abordagens e as linhas semióticas constantes do campo da Documentação na Espanha. Para tanto, sustentou-se que a orientação semiótica dos estudos espanhóis em Documentação ainda requeriam um tratamento abrangente e sistematizado. Entre os resultados, destacam-se a convergência da maior parte dos teóricos com temas semióticos vinculados à Linguística e a necessidade de refundação de uma Semiótica documental, seguindo as diretrizes de Izquierdo Arroyo. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. In the following chapters, the main palatial complexes and other habitats are described, framed within the so-called Cretan Thalassocracy in the Aegean. The work continues with religion, discussing its cults and rituals, as well as the different writing systems found on small clay tablets (hieroglyphic, linear A and B) and the enigmatic Phaistos Disc. Description: Strategy-making takes place in webs of socio-material practices, where agency is mediated by artifacts and actors continuously reframe the way on which they give sense to their actions and objectives. Despite agency still depends on human actors, material artifacts can play a critical role in these ensembles of practices making strategizing always open to transformation. The practices associated with the strategy formation encompass conflicting people mental models, distributed knowledge and materiality for the development of a systematic, coherent and coordinated strategic process. The activities that qualify strategy-making are multifaceted and include a more or less deliberative and routinized individual decision-making and the conscious or unconscious exploration of emerging patterns. According to a cognitive approach to strategy-making, what strategists decide is largely influenced by their different perceptual filters, which are unique, as they were formed through the specific ways of engaging with the world, and by the construction of shared meanings. This consideration puts scholars to elaborate about the use of visual artifacts to frame strategic thinking and conceptualize a shared strategic orientation. The unfolding character of strategizing process stimulates to better understand the knowledge production process that explains the epistemic nature of the process itself. In particular, it has been demonstrated that the use of visual representations supports the knowledge production during the innovation processes as it facilitate the abstraction and the concretization of innovation practices. The potential benefits of using visual representations for fostering strategizing process have not yet been analysed extensively. Few case studies reflecting on the crucial role of visual representation in the strategy process and decisions in complex setting. This study aims to fill these gaps and explores how strategy maps shape the strategic practices within Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. The Italian University setting is a complex research field as it is a multivoiced domain and a rapidly changing one. A recent reform is stimulating a radical change in the management policies making the strategy processes a pluralistic and uncertain work.

Description: Markov chains represent a classical topic of probability theory that has a large number of applications in different areas, including mathematics, computer science, physics, biology, natural science, economics and several others. Typical examples of Markovian models concern for instance the analysis and interpretation of DNA sequences, voice recognition and the design of procedures for analysis and browsing of the web. In computer science and in particular in the algorithmic area Markov chains have been used to introduce the so-called Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, which allow us to design probabilistic approximation algorithms for solving NP-hard problems. This work presents Markov chains and their algorithmic applications in a mathematical style, with a didactic spirit. It mainly has educational purposes, and it is specifically designed for teaching these topics in Italian university courses at a master level.

Description: Learning devices can be embedded into organizational contexts. Through them learning processes can be intentionally activated as to transform employees while working. Workplaces have their own learning potential due to their high level of structuring and regulation. Their learning potential transform organizational actors while they are in the productive actions. Identifying embedded learning processes helps in intercepting learning valencies of workplace experiences and observing learning actions that can lead to transformative processes. Results of related research activities are presented in the volume. They have been carried out in more than ten years of research implemented in three types of organisations: business, museum, prison. Research experiences are analysed by using a model of study that is based on the reconstruction of the learning processes as they are experienced by the actors considered. Moreover the model is based on the analysis of learning actions that are embedded into the productive and service provision processes. Factors and conditions are analysed as well through which organisations can act on employees transformation.

Description: The idea of a planning-oriented geography was part of the ‘revolutionary’ renewal program of the discipline proposed by Massimo Quaini since the 70’s. First through an analysis of how human geography was built in the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, then in the theoretical and methodological writings in which he critically examines his experiences as a geographer engaged in urban, regional, environmental and landscape planning works. In such writings, he highlights the latent and unsolved contrast between the aim of meeting the needs of the inhabitants and the tendency to organize the local space according to economic competition.

Description: In the undulating plains of north-eastern Syria is the site of Tell Barri, identified with the city of Kahat. The archaeological sequence which has been brought to light stretches without interruption from the start of the third millennium up to the fourteenth century AD. This report records the results of the seventeenth excavation campaign, carried out by the group from the University of Florence and from the “Federico II” University of Naples. Layers from the end of the third millennium have been brought to light, the passage between the Mid- and Neo-Assyrian periods. In the palace of Tukulti-Ninurta II the reception hall was discovered. For the later periods, investigation has proceeded on the Great Defensive Wall of Parthian age, and on the large edifice in the lower city.

Description: This book investigates the evolution of rusticated facings in perhaps one of the most significant contexts for their history, namely the architecture of the 15th century in Florence, where the development of this type of masonry intertwines with that of the buildings constructed over the century. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages. The Florence renovatio of ancient architecture passes indeed from the masonries, as pointed out by many writings from that period, which describe their contemporary rusticated facings and compare them to the massif ancient opus quadratum. While accepting the lesson on magnificence by the Julio-Claudian rustication, Florence facings would never become a faithful reproduction of the Roman models, but would always retain traditional characters and patterns, constantly oscillating between an expressive freedom and a yearning for the rigour of form.

Description: On 12, 13 and 14 May 2003 the second edition of the study days on didactic materials for the teaching of foreign languages was held in Florence. Numerous language teachers, mainly active in Italian universities but also in private and public high schools took part in these study days. The speakers addressed a wide range of issues ranging from the implications of the enlargement of the European Union to the educational use of new technologies, from aspects of contrastive linguistics to the use of foreign languages for the teaching of non-linguistic subjects. From this dialogue between different experiences and cultures, an extremely dynamic picture emerged, open to new methodological and scientific stimuli. The volume is the significant collection of over 40 interventions and represents a contribution to the discussion on the teaching of foreign languages.

The principal inspiring aim is the quest for synergy between criminal law and administrative law in the activities aimed at fighting corruption. The 'final' interests damaged by corruption are fundamental (public safety, national economy), such as to demand the stigmatisation and efficacy inherent to the penal instrument. However, no less important is the prevention aspect recommended by the European and international institutions, which can be achieved through a real and effective reinforcement of administrative instruments, such as the prevention of conflicts of interest or the strengthening of the disciplinary system.

Description: "From sign to sound" is a research project aimed to investigate some peculiar features of the musical reading with reference to instrumental performance. Its purpose is to extend the present knowledge about cognitive, musical, and pedagogical aspects of the subject, pointing out problematic issues and solutions significant for the young musicians' music performance education. The main study profile, which differentiates it from very few existing international studies on the subject, arises from the particular situation of the Latin countries (to which some other Latin American countries must be added) that adopted, starting from XIX century, the syllabic designation of notes, abandoning the alphabetic one. The aim of the research was to clarify a) the extent to which the outlined situation is widespread in Italian and European instrumental teaching, b) what are the prevailing opinions about it, and c) whether different perspectives can be found based on instrumental families or educational schools.

The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.

Description: Detlef Heikamp's is one of the greatest scholars of the collections of historical pieces in Florence; to celebrate his 90th birthday, on the 10th an 11th November 2017, a study meeting dedicated to the birth of epigraphy as historical science was organised. The Uffizi Galleries were the ideal setting for such an initiative: there, starting from the 17th century, one of the most valuable Greek and Latin epigraphy collections was created, and it would deeply mark the evolution of this field of study; it is precisely to this institution which Detlef Heikamp decided to donate a precious selection of finds from his collection of inscriptions, in the aftermath of a disastrous attack in 1993. The most authoritative experts in the sector participated enthusiastically in the two days in Florence; their ten contributions are now collected in this volume, which offers an updated and accurate picture of the excellence of Italian research in the field of Greek and Roman epigraphy.

Description: The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

Description: Perspective restitution is the inverse process of perspective and is therefore rooted in descriptive geometry; when this technique is applied to the restitution of dimensions from photos, it enters the territories of photogrammetry. The position on the border between two disciplines, different but related, has caused the solitude of perspective restitution from photos: rarely mentioned in studies on descriptive geometry, it is completely ignored in those dedicated to photogrammetry. Yet, perspective restitution is the only tool that allows us to reconstruct, from a single image, the 3D layout of a building. In his 1930 book dedicated to 'Metrophotography', Henri Deneux had highlighted, probably for the first time, the possibility of reconstructing, from a single photo, buildings or parts of them damaged by war events (Deneux referred to monuments damaged by the bombings of World War I). Today, digital drawing and modelling tools enable us to overcome many of the difficulties that affected perspective restitution from photos with traditional drawing tools. This volume illustrates the theoretical assumptions and the drawing and modelling techniques that allow us to achieve the 3D reconstruction of buildings and urban scenarios that no longer exist from one or few images.
