    Description: The current political discourse on the "further development and control of child and youth welfare" attempts to discredit and repress outpatient help for upbringing. The present "plea" interferes professionally and politically in this debate. The authors provide a critical assessment of the current situation of child and youth welfare and in particular of educational assistance and trace the process of the debate on the "further development and control of educational assistance". On the basis of detailed description and analysis of the two basic approaches to action in social work (social work in and with the social space on the one hand and individual casework, e.g. educational assistance, on the other), it deals with the question of whether the controversy alleged by politicians between the two approaches to action is technically justified. In this context, the two approaches to action are presented in their history and development and in their different conceptions. In addition to a clear plea for the preservation and consistently professional design of educational assistance in the context of life-world orientation, this also leads to the realisation that social work in general - and especially in times of neo-liberalisation of the social - is subject to the risk of individualisation. On the other hand, within both approaches it is also possible today to fend off this tendency and to act as a critical force in this society. In addition to the technical, ideological and political examination of the new control intentions of politics vis-à-vis aid for education, this book contains detailed descriptions and discussions on various individual topics, among others: - Technical characteristics, action orientations and process design of the action approaches "Outpatient individual case assistance" and "Work in and with the social space" (8.4 and 9.3, 9.4) - What shares does social work itself have in its partly unprofessional state? Von Seiten der Politik wird dieses Engagement begrüßt in der Hoffnung, es könne Lücken in der öffentlichen Daseinsvorsorge ein stückweit schließen – ohne angemessene Unterstützung, ist dieses Engagement nachhaltig gefährdet.

    Description: Using virtue as an example, the study provides an insight into the normative and subjective orientations of young people in their everyday school context. The concept of virtue in previous educational debates is juxtaposed with a perspective that incorporates the students' point of view: In contrast to the normatively used concept of virtue, the present findings present virtue of honesty as an ambivalent behavior that is situation-, context- and person-dependent. Since ancient Greece, virtues have been a central theme of pedagogy. Educational philosophers have repeatedly developed catalogues of virtues which they assumed could guide practical education. The present work asks how young people adapt to educational demands and undermine them to their own advantage. The question is pursued using the example of school-relevant virtue honesty by interviewing 16 young people in the school context using problem-centred interviews. The results of the study refer to explicit and implicit rules of honesty, which can be divided into conventional and unconventional rules.

    Description: How do professionals in open youth work deal with violence among young people? On the basis of an ethnographic study based on Grounded Theory, the author points out different processing strategies. The results show that professionals primarily interpret and deal with violence as a risk. It becomes clear that the action strategies of the social workers refer to approaches of sanctioning pedagogy on the one hand and youth work as education on the other. The ethnographic study in the style of Grounded Theory with a professional theoretical perspective was conducted in five different youth clubs over a period of one and a half years. Although violence between young people is relatively rare, it is omnipresent in the thinking of professional forces as a scenario that could develop. The presentation of typical situations from youth clubs shows that they constantly act in the sense of violence prevention close to everyday life and try to prevent a violent development through targeted action strategies. Within this framework, it becomes clear that two patterns of professional problem construction are central - on the one hand, following the sanctioning pedagogy, on the other hand, an understanding of youth work as education. Against this background, the interpretation and action strategies of skilled workers were discussed.

The social relationships among residents, however, have hardly been researched to date. For the two dimensions of friendship and social support, Christine Philippsen examines the degree of social integration of residents into their residential group and the mechanisms of integration. A common housing project is characterized by the coexistence of a fixed group of 15 to 30 households on average. Important motives for communal living are mutual help in everyday life, prevention of loneliness, experiencing solidarity and joint leisure activities. The two main target groups are older people and households with underage children. The empirical results are based on a separate written survey of residents in five multi-generation housing projects - they provide answers to various questions, including socio-politically relevant questions, such as the generation of social capital for different groups of people such as the elderly, people living alone or families with minor children.

    Description: In diesem Buch untersucht die Autorin das Thema Schamdynamiken in der stationären Betreuung Jugendlicher, indem sie ethnographisch erhobene Interaktionsverläufe und qualitative Interviews interpretiert. Es werden verschiedene Fälle analysiert, in denen unter anderem das Spannungsfeld der emotionalen Belastung von Fachkräften und ihre pädagogischen Handlungsspielräume eine Rolle spielen. Außerdem gibt die Studie Aufschluss über den Umgang mit der Ausübung von Gewalt aus der Sicht Jugendlicher oder mit den Folgen suizidalen Verhaltens. Der Ausdruck von Scham durch die Jugendlichen, der Fachkräfte sowie auch das Schamempfinden der Forschenden sind hierbei Anhaltspunkte, von denen aus Kontraste und strukturelle Zusammenhänge in den Daten gefunden werden. Bei der Interpretation werden soziologische Affekttheorien einbezogen, die betonen, dass ein dichotomes Verständnis von Affekten als nur positiv oder negativ deren komplexer Funktion nicht gerecht wird. Damit leistet das Buch einen Beitrag zum Verstehen des sozialen Sinns von Affekten und macht die Affektforschung für die Sozialpädagogik fruchtbar.
    Description: In this book, the author examines the topic of shame dynamics in residential care for adolescents by interpreting ethnographically collected interaction processes. The expressions of shame by the adolescents, their caregivers, as well as the researchers’ perception of shame, are points of reference from which contrasts and structural connections in the data are identified. Modern theories of affect are included, which emphasise that a dichotomous understanding of affects as only positive or negative does not do justice to their complex function. In this way, the work contributes to understanding the social meaning of affects and makes affect research fruitful for social pedagogy.

    Description: How has social work developed into a scientifically sound practice and how will social work continue to develop as a profession in the future? With this publication, the author for the first time presents a comprehensive reconstruction and socio-historical analysis of the development of social work as a profession in Germany. The sociologically (professionally) sound presentation structures the discourses in the literature on social work in a detailed and unprecedented way. It deals with social work in Germany and its more than 150-year history. Originally conceptualized as a 'social auxiliary activity' (Alice Salomon), social work can be described from a professional sociological perspective as a project for advancement and success, which is rather atypical and in some aspects also ambivalent. Based on the initial processes of the vocationalization of social work, three decisive phases of development were identified from the 1970s onwards. The tracing of this development shows that since its emergence at the beginning of the 20th century, social work has even risen from a semi-profession that was always regarded as deficient to a potential trendsetter for future professional development.

Der vorliegende zehnte Band der Reihe mit einem Geleitwort von Hans-Günther Roßbach stellt die Ergebnisse der Studien zu Wirkungen naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote auf pädagogische Fachkräfte und Kinder im Vorschulalter vor. Mirjam Steffensky, Yvonne Anders, Julia Barenthien, Ilonca Hardy, Miriam Leuchter, Elisa Oppermann, Päivi Taskinen und Tobias Ziegler untersuchten die Wirkungen naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote auf die kognitiven und motivationalen Kompetenzen von pädagogischen Fachkräften und Kindern in Kitas. Insgesamt konnte aufgezeigt werden, dass die Teilnahme an naturwissenschaftlichen Fortbildungen in einem positiven Zusammenhang mit den naturwissenschaftlichen professionellen Kompetenzen pädagogischer Fachkräfte stehen und dass Kinder aus Einrichtungen mit einem expliziten naturwissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt höhere Lernfreude und höheres Selbstvertrauen in Bezug auf Naturwissenschaften zeigen als Kinder in Einrichtungen ohne naturwissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt. Astrid Rank, Anja Wildemann, Sabina Pauen, Andreas Hartinger, Sabrina Tietze und Rahel Kästner untersuchten die Interaktionsqualität und mögliche sprachliche Bildungswirkungen im Kontext naturwissenschaftlicher Bildungsangebote bei Vorschulkindern. Die Studie legt nahe, dass naturwissenschaftliche Fortbildungen die naturwissenschaftlichen Kompetenzen wie auch den Spracherwerb der Kinder unterstützen und die Prozessqualität der Fachkräfte in naturwissenschaftsbezogenen Situationen bestimmen können. Das Schlusskapitel des Bandes beschreibt die Umsetzung der wissenschaftlichen Empfehlungen in den inhaltlichen Angeboten der Stiftung "Haus der kleinen Forscher" und ihrer fachlichen Weiterentwicklung.
