    Description: This book is the first Finnish-language collection of research on superdiversity. At the core of the book is the growing migration to Finland since the turn of the 1990s and its numerous effects on Finnish society. The interdisciplinary examination of superdiversity is important at the current moment: Finland as a society has reached the point where certain social categories, such as ethnic background, country of birth, mother tongue or gender, are not necessarily sufficient to understand the increased diversity and its consequences. The book consists of a comprehensive introduction to the topic and thirteen chapters. In Finland, research on superdiversity is carried out especially in critical sociolinguistics and applied language studies, education, cultural studies, social sciences, and urban studies. Therefore, these disciplines are strongly represented in the collection, and the chapters approach a variety of topics including refugees’ mental health, experiences of multilingual families, the diversity of education and working life, discursive practices in social media, issues of urban planning and pro-asylum activism.

    Description: Danske 4.-klasseelevers læsekompetence har aldrig været lavere. Det viser resultaterne af Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) fra 2021. Der er flere elever, der har svært ved at læse, og for de svageste læsere er det endnu sværere end tidligere. Andelen af dygtige læsere er den samme som i tidligere undersøgelser, men næsten 25 procent af de danske 4.-klasseelever kan hverken fortolke, læse mellem linjerne eller læse kildekritisk.Samtidig er elevernes læseglæde faldet, og Danmark er – sammen med Norge – det land i hele undersøgelsen, som har færrest elever, der rigtig godt kan lide at læse. Flere elever har lav tiltro til deres egen læseforståelse, og både eleverne og deres forældre læser sjældnere i deres fritid.Danske elevers læsekompetence i 4. klasse præsenterer resultaterne af PIRLS 2021-undersøgelsen og fortæller om undersøgelsens baggrund og formål samt om udviklingen i elevernes læsekompetence fra 2006 og til i dag. Resultaterne peger på, at der fortsat er brug for en fælles indsats for at styrke elevernes læsning i skole og i fritid

Udlændingemyndigheder skal nu gå til grænsen af Danmarks internationale forpligtelser i deres vurderinger af opholdstilladelser og ikke vægte flygtninges tilknytning til landet i samme grad som tidligere. Flygtninge skal sendes tilbage til deres oprindelsesland, så snart det er muligt, og hvis de ikke vil rejse frivilligt, må de flytte ind på et udrejsecenter, indtil de kan deporteres. Paradigmeskiftet markerer på den ene side et radikalt nybrud i dansk flygtningepolitik, men må på den anden side forstås i forlængelse af de sidste årtiers restriktive politik på udlændinge- og integrationsområdet.Denne bog er den første til systematisk at belyse de mange konsekvenser af den aktuelle danske flygtningepolitik. Den viser, at paradigmeskiftet ikke kun påvirker flygtninges liv, men som ringe i vandet får betydning for fagfolk og frivillige, for forholdet mellem borgerne, staten og velfærdssamfundet, for os selv og vores omgang med hinanden.     Description: In this book [titled Home, welfare work and vulnerability] the authors take the reader on welfare workers’ home visits to clients in need of support in their living. Welfare workers refer to professionals in health and social care who in the book are represented among others by social workers, social care workers and nurses. The main concepts of the book are home, welfare work and vulnerability and these are contemplated from different angles. Welfare work entails encountering people who are in vulnerable situations in the midst of their everyday lives. They may need support in coping with their mental health, with physical illnesses, with the challenges of achieving sobriety and recovery or perhaps with the difficulties accompanying old age. On the one hand their ability to act is limited and weak but on the other they have many kinds of strengths and resources. The book addresses a significant turning point in welfare services and work at which the objective is defined as the right of every individual to their own home and making living at home feasible for as long as possible. In the last fifty years or so many societal factors have made possible the dismantling of institutions, the reduction of places and the shortening of stays in institutions, the further development of care in the community, the construction of small residential and care facilities and most recently the further development of services to be taken into people’s homes. The last stage of this dismantling of institutions is referred to in the book as the “home turn”. As a societal change the home turn is complex – and that is how it is approached in the book. When one’s own home is the main place in which welfare policy and work are implemented, it is important to scrutinize more closely what actually occurs there and what special issues are connected to this given context. The book offers a timely point of view on the development of welfare services and the grass-root level welfare work done in the homes. It draws on interaction research based on ethnomethodology and human geography. Research data consist of recordings of home visits, researcher’s field diaries and interviews with clients and workers. The work includes both chapters providing conceptual and theoretical overviews and empirical research on the encounters between client and worker(s) on home visits. Welfare work accomplished in people’s homes entails many tensions and ethical issues which are analysed in the book and made visible through the means of research.

    Description: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. The book also provides practical examples of how the method can be used in research.
    Description: Kasvatusinstituutiot peruskoulusta yliopistoon ovat jatkuvan muutoksen keskiössä. Globaalit ja paikalliset yhteiskunnalliset muutokset, kuten esimerkiksi sosiaalisen median levittäytyminen osaksi arkea tai synnytyssairaaloiden keskittäminen, asettavat ammattilaisille uusia osaamisvaatimuksia sekä eettisiä haasteita. Kokoomateoksen kymmenessä tutkimusartikkelissa tarkastellaan eläytymismenetelmän avulla näiden muuttuvien ympäristöjen vaikutusta niissä toimivien ihmisten arkeen. Tutkimusartikkeleissa käsitellään esimerkiksi oppilaiden näkemyksiä yhteisopettajuudesta, kätilöiden osaamista, rekrytoijien ammattitaitoa sekä seksuaalista häirintää verkossa kohtaavien nuoren toimijuutta. Menetelmällisen painotuksensa ansiosta teosta voi hyödyntää myös eläytymismenetelmän soveltamistapoja kuvaavana oppikirjana. Teos on kolmas osa vuosikirjasarjassa, joka esittelee eläytymismenetelmän käyttöä tutkimusmenetelmänä. Teos osallistuu ajankohtaiseen keskusteluun laadullisen tutkimuksen luotettavuudesta hahmottamalla menetelmän käytettävyyden mahdollisuuksia ja rajoja sen metodologisten erityispiirteiden kautta.

In Finland, most discussion on the welfare state's condition has focused on stabilizing the public-sector's finances. A functional welfare state combines economic stability with the social foundation. However in the mid 2010s there are cracks in the social foundation of the welfare state . In this book the cracks of welfare state's social foundation are analysed from the perspective of dependency on social security. Especially the Finns' attitudes and political divisions, policies, the length of customership of last-resort social security, the functionality of service and income transfer systems, social segmentation created by breadlines and coping on the last-resort social security are observed. The book is meant for all interested in the condition and future of the welfare state. It is suitable as a textbook in universities and universities of applied sciences. The editor of the book, Juho Saari, is Professor in social and health policy at the University of Tampere and part-time Professor in welfare sociology at the University of Eastern Finland.     Description: "Suurin osa hyvinvointivaltion tilasta käydystä yhteiskuntapoliittisesta keskustelusta on kohdentunut julkisen talouden vakauttamiseen.     Description: Social and the ecological welfare should be taken as the main aim of all politics. This is the message of this book titled The Enchantment of Social Policy. Basic social security system needs to be rebuilt and grounded on the universal basic income that everyone can top up by participating to the society in different ways. Universal basic income can be seen as a mean to recognize all valuable participation to for example voluntary work or care of elderly people. In conditions of high unemployment, this kind of universalistic social security would weaken the nexus between employment and welfare. It would promote a society and culture that is less dependent on the exploitation of natural resources. This book describes building blocks that are needed to reconstitute the enchantment of social policy – the utopian that we should collectively pursue.
    Description: Sosiaalipolitiikan Lumon kirjoittajilla on viesti. Mielestämme politiikan keskeiseksi tavoitteeksi tulisi asettaa sosiaalinen ja ekologinen hyvinvointi. Tätä tavoitetta kohti tulisi kulkea universalismin periaattein ja kansalaisten perusturva, oli sitten kyse työllisistä tai työttömistä, nuorista tai iäkkäistä, kantaväestöstä tai maahanmuuttajista, tulisi rakentaa kaikille yhtäläisen perustulon pohjalle. Tätä perusturvaa jokainen voisi täydentää ansiotuloilla ja omaehtoisella, sosiaaliturvassa kompensoitavalla osallistumisella yhteiskunnalliseen työhön kuten vapaaehtoistyöhön, harrastusryhmien ohjaamiseen, omaisen tai lasten hoivaan. Tämä antaisi arvon monenlaiselle hyödylliselle toimelle, joka nyt jää yhteiskunnassa tunnistamatta. Tällainen sosiaaliturva ottaisi lähtökohdakseen uuden ihmisarvon ja loisi luonnonvaroja säilyttävää ja niukkaan materian käyttöön perustuvaa kulttuuria ja taloutta. Sosiaalipolitiikalla olisi tällaisessa politiikassa aktiivinen ja yhteiskunnan taloudellista ja sosiaalista kehitystä vauhdittava rooli, ja kansalaiset olisi kutsuttu hyvinvoinnin aktiivisiksi tekijöiksi.

    Description: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II).

Jos yhteistä opetussuunnitelmaan perustuvaa toimintaa halutaan kehittää koko kasvatus- ja opetusyhteisön merkitysneuvotteluna, se niin ikään edellyttää keskinäistä vuorovaikutusta ja eri toimijoiden välistä yhteistyötä. Teoksen ensimmäisessä osassa, Opetussuunnitelma yhteisön työnä, tarkastellaan korkea-asteen ja perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelmatyön ajankohtaisia kysymyksiä. Opetussuunnitelmatyössä kohtaavat rakenteet ja yksilöt, poliittiset, taloudelliset ja pedagogiset intressit, oppijoiden, opettajien, johdon ja virkamiesten maailmat sekä erilaiset tavat nähdä tieto ja tietäminen, osaaminen ja yhteiskunnan muutokset. Toisessa osassa, Opiskelija yhteisön jäsenenä, keskitytään opintoihin kiinnittymisen, hyvinvoinnin ja mielekkäiden oppimiskokemusten arviointiin, tukemiseen ja kehittämiseen opetusyhteisöissä luoden samalla vaihtoehtoista tulkintaa ja viitekehystä nykyiselle tehokkuutta ja tuloksia korostavalle ajattelutavalle. Kolmannessa osassa, Lukeminen, kirjoittaminen ja monilukutaito koulutuksen yhteisöissä, katsotaan paitsi kirjoittamisen opetuksen historiaan suomalaisessa koulussa mutta pyritään myös ymmärtämään tulevaa ja sitä, mitä lukutaidolla oikeastaan nykyisin tarkoitetaan. Erilaisissa kasvatuksen ja opetuksen yhteisöissä on olennaista kehittää opetusta askel askeleelta eteenpäin kohti oppijoiden ja opettajien hyvinvoivia ja uutta luovia yhteisöjä. Teoksen nimessä oleva Kehittämisen palat kuvaa kehittämistyön vähittäistä, pienin askelin etenemistä ja yhteisöjen salat puolestaan yhteisöjen monilta osin tiedostamatonta potentiaalia kasvatuksen ja opetuksen kehittämisessä.
