Description: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful interpretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolution. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne department. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been virtually non-existent.

Description: An exhaustive inventory of fortified residences is compared here to written evidence, figurative representations and fieldwork. It retraces the evolution of seigneurial residences of the Xth to XVth centuries. These elements are reinsered into the domaine and social context thanks to the drawing up of unpublished genealogies. In this imposing work a continual contact is maintained between past and present outlining the progress of archaeological research. Actual problems such as the protection of this threatened heritage are also evoked here.

Description: Who were the inhabitants of the castle, the main center of power during the Middle-Ages? What um their life style? These are some of the many questions to which this Collective study hopes to reply. Confronted by archaeological and written evidence, unusually treated here as sciences auxiliary to archaeology we are offered here an unusual lieu of a sparsly inhabited castle. This study is centred on the region of the Rhône-Alpes with several incursions for comparison in Alsace, Spain and in Poland, their objective goes far outside the regional limits and should provoke the interest of all archaeologists and medieval historians.

Description: Earth and wood constructions of the Roman era were, until several years ago, very little known. Recent excavations have provided us with considerable information. This work attempts to answer primary questions such as : are these protohistorical survivals ? what construction techniques were used ? what socio-economic conditions do they correspond to ? The textual and archaeological approach go along with informationobtained by contemporary experiments.

Description: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the “grange du Mont” was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the “grange”, as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy.

Description: The Orlac boat (Charente-Maritime), dated to the first-half of the XIth century and excavated in 1987 and 1988, comprises the major part of this publication. 15,50 metres in length and 2,10 in width, this vessel, with its own particular caracteristics, is representative of assembled monoxyle boat architecture. The study of this wreck was at the same time combined with a study of river and riverbank improvements at Orlac, and with other medieval wrecks (essentially dug outs) excavated elsewhere in the Charente. This archaeological approach to medieval water transport of the Charente has been continued by an analysis of written sources, the progression of river improvements (Middle-Ages to XIXth century), of navigation and their consequences on the regional economy.

Description: A research project carried out between 1984 et 1989 permitted a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of the history of medieval pottery production centres in Brittany to be studied by a dialogue between history, archeology and archaeometry. Diachronic studies of the written sources (XIVth-XXth centuries), fieldwork and studies of the geological and archeological environment were systematically carried out, the excavation of two Carolingian production sites (Meudon near Vannes and Plangueuoual, Côtes-d’Armor) or from XIth-XIIth centuries (Fontenay in Chartres-de-Bretagne); these being axed on sise totality of the workshop structures and not only on the kilns, the analysis of the products (morphological analysis, petrographical characterisation and archaeomagnetic dating). This research, feed by methodological techniques, comprises ten contributions each reflecting the diverse approaches and the renewal of interest in the history of pottery workshops and centres rti Brittany.

Description: In this publication, Jacques Thiriot, a research worker with the CNRS, presents the results of the fieldwork carried out between 1972 and 1979 on the mediaeval grey pottery workshops of the Uzege and the Lower Rhone, in particular at Saint-Victor-des-Oules in the Gard (XIIth and XIIIth cent.) and Bollene in the Vaucluse (XIIIth cent.). During this work, a methodology adapted to the excavation and interpretation of the remains (ovens and buildings) was perfected, thanks to a rigorous technical analysis. It provided an exceptional insight into production methods in one of the largest mediaeval potter’s workshops in south-east France. It has also completed typological data based on pottery found during excavations in user centres, not only in Provence but also in Languedoc. Apart from the subject, rarely dealt with for the mediaeval period, the originality of the work lies in the systematic use of geophysical prospection and scientific methods of dating and in the application of an ethno-archaeological approach which gives a better understanding of mediaeval pottery activities in the region.

Description: This volume comprises the published proceedings of a conference organized by the Société d’archéologie médiévale and the Groupement de recherche 94 of the CNRS which was held at Aix-en-Provence between September 1989 28th and 30th. The papers were grouped according to three themes which play a leading part in the study of medieval rural settlement. The first deals with the influence of late Antiquity on the religious topography of the medieval countryside and the problem of continuity of the ecclesiastical and funerary use of sites. The second adresses the role of churches as foci for the organisation of settlement; this phenomenon, which was promoted by the interests of the Peace of God movement, formed the basis of units of population which appear sometimes to have been in competition with the emergent system of castellanies. The last theme concerns the organisation of ecclesiastical estates.

Description: Two decades of research on Motte-and-Bailey castles in Provence have contributed new elements to our knowledge of the castle phenomenon that developed at the end of the 10th century. More than sixty sites have been recorded and our prospection continues to reveal new ones. The excavation of several of them allowed us to identify the evolution of construction methods and the organization of these small castles. In the beginning, they were very modest edifices consisting of simple perched houses that required relatively few resources and employed techniques that were easy to put into operation. In the second phase, beginning around 1000 AD, we observe the construction of true fortresses. The study of these first fortifications focuses on the occupation of terroirs organized around a castrum, often noted in texts. The construction of these fortifications seems to have been most intensive around 1000 AD and during the 11th century, but some were erected at the beginning of the 13th century. This ongoing research shows that the early stages of private fortification was integrated in a vast trend of the occupation of terroirs surrounding complex fortifications.

Description: The work presents the results of two preventive excavations undertaken prior to the extension and reorganisation of the Palais de Justice at Épinal (Vosges), carried out in the late 1990s. These archaeological investigations covered a surface area of 3 000 m2, and were correlated with other documentary sources to provide new information on the origins of the town and the development of a quarter located at the heart of the urban space, between the château and the basilica of Saint-Maurice. The oldest traces of occupation of the sector date to the 8th-9th century, but it is only from the 10th century that the first redevelopments are attested, on the edges of a wet area on the site of a former watercourse. The space became gradually more structured between the 13th and early 17th centuries with the development of habitations opening onto rear courtyards and connected with artisanal and commercial activities. In the 1620s, the built environment was taken over by the Congrégation Notre-Dame. This religious order constructed a new convent in the 18th century. Following the Revolution, the religious buildings were employed for administrative functions before the construction in around 1820 of a prison, destroyed in the late 20th century. In addition to the information relating to the origins and transformation of the urban space, this publication offers an illuminating insight into the material and spiritual life of a district over a period of nearly a millennium. Finally, it provides an original view of the daily life of a religious community in the Modern period.

Description: Carpalogical research combined with careful field methodology provides an exemplary illustration of the potential for an approach only recently applied to historical periods In France. The stocks from the Durfort granary, destroyed by tire in the 14th century, have provided an opportunity to study almost 400,000 seeds from the same occupation layer. The corpus of 157 taxa, composed of 26 cultivated and 131 wild plants, has provided a large number of research opportunities. Carpological analysis, earned out in conjunction with archival research, has produced remarkable information in areas ranging from spatial distribution of grain species in the storage structure to hypotheses on farming practices on medieval community lands in a medium mountain context. The results demonstrate the importance of this contribution to our knowledge at agrarian history and material culture.
