    Description: Music plays an important role in many religions and in a variety of religious contexts. Music and Religion: Texts on Music in Religion and Religion in Music takes a look at the intersections between music and religion. We experience religion in music, and in religion we encounter musical expression. Although music and religion are unquestionably mutually pervasive, we can also come across gaps between them: Is it possible to move beyond a musical experience toward a religious one without having to hop over this gap? And is there any direct route from religion into music as an acoustic phenomenon? Without a religious interpretation of the music remaining? There is a wealth of research about music and religion, but little on how they meet. That is what this anthology seeks to remedy. Music and Religion will be relevant for anyone with an interest in encounters between these two phenomena. It will be especially relevant for students in performing, composing and scientific music education, as well as theology and religious studies. The anthology has been edited by Henrik Holm (associate professor in education at Oslo Metropolitan University and professor in philosophy at Rudolf Steiner University College) and Øivind Varkøy (professor in music education and music sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Music and professor II in music at Oslo Metropolitan University).

Musikk og religion: Tekster om musikk i religion og religion i musikk setter søkelyset på møtepunkter mellom musikk og religion. Mennesker erfarer religion i musikken, og i religionen møter mennesket i musikalske uttrykk. Selv om musikk og religion utvilsomt gjennomtrenger hverandre, kan vi også støte på gap mellom dem: Er det mulig å overskride en musikalsk erfaring henimot det religiøse uten å måtte hoppe over dette gapet? Og finnes det en vei fra religionen direkte inn i musikken som klangfenomen? Forblir det ikke bare en religiøs fortolkning av musikk? Det finnes mye forskning på musikk og religion, men lite om hvordan de møtes. Denne antologien forsøker å gjøre noe med dette. Musikk og religion retter seg mot alle med interesse for møter mellom disse to livsfenomener. Den vil være særlig aktuell for studenter innenfor utøvende, skapende og vitenskapelige musikkutdanninger, teologi og religionsvitenskap. Boken er redigert av Henrik Holm (førsteamanuensis i pedagogikk, OsloMet, og professor i filosofi, Steinerhøyskolen), og Øivind Varkøy (professor i musikkpedagogikk og musikkvitenskap, Norges musikkhøgskole, og professor II i musikk, OsloMet).

    Description: Experimental Affinities in Music brings together diverse artistic, musicological, historical, and philosophical essays, enhancing a broad discourse on artistic experimentation, and exploring various experimental attitudes in music composed between the thirteenth and twentieth centuries. The golden thread running through the different chapters is the quest for inherently experimental musical practices, a quest pursued from interrogating, descriptive, or challenging perspectives, and always in relation to concrete music examples. Experimental is taken as an adventurous compositional, interpretive, or performative attitude that can cut across different ages and styles. Affinities suggest connectors and connections, convergences, contiguities, and adjacencies that are found in and through a diversity of approaches and topics. The texts share a common genesis: the lectures of the International Orpheus Academies for Music and Theory convened by Luk Vaes (2011) and Paulo de Assis (2012, 2013). The affinities found in this volume include essays by Lydia Goehr, Felix Diergarten, Mark Lindley, Martin Kirnbauer, Edward Wickham, Lawrence Kramer, Hermann Danuser, and Thomas Christensen, as well as interviews with pianist Leon Fleisher, with pianist-composer Frederic Rzewski, and with composer Helmut Lachenmann.     Description: This anthology deals with co-singing (Norwegian: samsang) in different life stages and various settings in a Scandinavian context. Co-singing forms an essential part of our shared cultural heritage. Co-singing involves all forms of singing-activities in which people coexist, and characterizes in various ways human companionship throughout the course of life, from cradle to grave. From a critical analytical perspective, the research in this anthology sheds light on several themes related to the importance and value of co-singing practice in terms of sensemaking and experiencing coherence in life. This involves musical, physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, ethical, cultural, and social factors. The research project examines for instance the position of singing activities in Norwegian kindergartens and schools, co-singing and health-related topics, co-singing from a gender perspective, co-singing from a multicultural perspective, co-singing activities in light of motivation and coping, and also low-threshold, flexible daily life singing activities for persons with dementia and their relatives. Choir singing in various life stages, from childhood to age of retirement, are also explored in several chapters. With its broadly arranged and pluralistic approach, this anthology provides a multi-faceted contribution to the development of knowledge in the research field of music associated with the power and legitimacy of co-singing at the individual, group, and societal levels. The contributing authors have their practical and scientific experience from higher music education within the fields of music pedagogy, music performance, music therapy, music and health, and also from other types of cultural and musical practices.
    Description: Denne antologien omhandler samsang i ulike livsfaser og sammenhenger i en skandinavisk kontekst. Samsang utgjør en vesentlig del av vår felles kulturarv. Samsang, som innebærer alle former for sang der mennesker synger sammen, karakteriserer på ulike måter menneskelig samvær gjennom hele livsløpet, fra vugge til grav. Med et kritisk analytisk blikk belyser forskningsarbeidene i antologien varierte tematikker omkring samsangpraksisens betydning og verdi for meningsskaping og opplevelse av sammenheng i livet knyttet til musikalske, fysiske, psykiske, emosjonelle, kognitive, etiske, kulturelle og sosiale faktorer. Undersøkelsene innbefatter blant annet sangens stilling i norske barnehager og skoler, samsang og helserelaterte temaer, samsang i et kjønnsperspektiv, samsang i et flerkulturelt perspektiv, samsangaktiviteter i lys av mestring og motivasjon, samt hverdagslige samsangaktiviteter for personer med demens og deres pårørende. Korsang i ulike livsfaser, fra oppvekstår til pensjonsalder, tematiseres også i flere kapitler. Med sin bredt anlagte og pluralistiske tilnærming, gir antologien et mangesidig bidrag til kunnskapsutviklingen på det musikkpedagogiske området knyttet til samsangens kraft og legitimitet både på individ-, gruppe- og samfunnsnivå. By connecting materially concrete positions in a way familiar to artists, this book shows how moves can be made between established positions and completely new ground.     Description: Beyond interpretation: a proposal for experimental performance practices Logic of Experimentation offers several innovative and ground-breaking perspectives on music performance, music ontology, research methodologies and ethics of performance. It proposes new modes of thinking and exposing past musical works to contemporary audiences, arguing for a new kind of performer, emancipated from authoritative texts and traditions, whose creativity is propelled by intensive research and inventive imagination.     Description: Early music performance in its broadest capacity presents a compelling case of being something in the present that is representing, presenting, enacting, re-enacting, living and re-living, concretising and fantasizing a historical past. It is both what it is and something entirely other. Inspiring countless efforts to come to terms with its nature, one way of approaching the act of conveying or “doing” history is through pedagogy. Pedagogy, here, is multifaceted, as it is placed and displaced in learning, acting, mediating, communicating, perceiving, conveying and persuading historically remote, cultural practices. As such, this anthology includes both explicitly pedagogical chapters and more implicit approaches situated within pedagogical settings. The driving force behind the project is: When maintaining and sustaining a certain European cultural heritage, how do we do so as artists and pedagogues and to what effect? To cast a fresh gaze on traditional Early music performance studies, the authors of this volume argue for the pedagogical potential of such a project. Not only as something functioning as an artefact used within an educational setting, but as something primarily pedagogical also in its formation and re-formation. The way Early music is construed and portrayed just to fulfil the official boundary of its terminology is also a pedagogical act performed in multiple ways. It is not a question of regarding Early music scholarship and artistry as binary presentism versus historicism, but rather as historicism in presentism and presentism in historicism – which is precisely what this volume is all about and to which it seeks to contribute. The anthology’s chapters highlight spectatorship, experience, theory, rhetoric, philosophy, representation, performance, performativity, literature, visual arts, pedagogy, education, pragmatism and also newmaterialism. They examine music that is readily categorised as Early music, as well as music that borders on, or is becoming, something else entirely, but with evident roots in the Early music repertoire.

    Description: Informed Play presents a conceptual understanding of tone production based on extensive historical research on primary sources, modern literature and handbook reviews, physical and psychological perspectives as well as on technology. As the first volume in English to discuss and contextualise the topic of tone production on Early Modern lute instruments from a broad, interdisciplinary approach, it represents a unique and significant contribution to research on Early Music performance, particularly performance on lute instruments.
