    Description: Tell city of Abu al-Kharaz is situated in the central Transjordanian Jordan Valley and excavated by the author from 1989 to 2012. The town flourished in the Early Bronze Age, and after an occupational lacuna of more than thousand years the site was re-occupied in the second half of the Middle Bronze Age and remained permanently occupied until the end of the Iron Age. The new volume is No. III in a series of three (The Early Bronze Age Vol. I, published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences Press in 2008, and the Middle and Late Bronze Ages Vol. II, in 2006).
    Description: Tell Abu al-Kharaz, ein Siedlungshügel im mittleren Jordantal, wurde zwischen 1989 und 2012 unter der Leitung des Autors erforscht. Die Stadt erlebte ihre Blütezeit in der Frühbronzezeit und – nach einer längeren Besiedlungslücke – in der späten Mittelbronze- und der Spätbronzezeit. Als letzter Band in einer Serie von drei Bänden über Tell Abu al-Kharaz (Band I: Frühbronzezeit, 2008; Band II: Mittel- und Spätbronzezeit, 2006) ist das vorliegende Buch der erste abgeschlossene Bericht über eine eisenzeitliche Siedlung im Jordantal.

    Description: This volume contains sixteen contributions devoted to historical monuments and materials relating to Western Tibet primarily between the late 9th and the 12th century. In one way or another, the thematic focus of all contributions is related to the establishment and spread of monastic Buddhism in the West Tibet kingdom, in particular the foundation of Buddhist monasteries and the role played by the state, the royal lineage and allied aristocratic clans. Studies of the sites of Nyarma and Tabo (both dating from 996), stelae, historiographical texts, including a genealogy of the royal lineage and the biography of one its most prominent representatives (the Royal Lama Yeshe ö, 947-1019), illustrated MSS and a fully decorated cave temple reflect the Buddhist rulers' and their aristocratic allies' vision of the West Tibetan kingdom.

    Description: This volume presents results of bilateral research project BeSyMPHONic (ÖAW/Univ. Toulouse) funded by ANR & FWF. Differences between the two languages with respect to the processing of morphonotactic (MPH) vs. phonotactic (PH) consonant clusters are shown for the first time, the linguistically challenging claim that differences between MPH and PH are also realized phonetically is refuted, and the importance of the relative morphological richness of a language is illustrated.

    Description: During 1999 and 2001 re-excavations in Križna jama were carried out, which brought crucial results concerning the taxonomical and stratigraphical position of the fossil taphocoenosis, especially of cave bears, and on their ethology. Moreover new data on the hydrological structure of the cave as well as on its sedimentology were published. A substantial part of this volume is dedicated to the extant fauna of this cave, which is extraordinary rich in species.
    Description: Nachgrabungen in den Jahren 1999 und 2001 brachten nicht nur wesentliche Erkenntnisse über die taxonomische und chronologische Stellung der fossilen Höhlenfauna und ihrer Lebensweise der Höhlenbären sondern auch neue Daten für die Entstehungsgeschichte der Höhle (Speläogenese), vom Verlauf der ober- und unterirdischen Gewässer (Hydrogeologie) sowie von der Sedimentologie der fossilführenden Sedimente.     Description: This book contains a critical Sanskrit edition of the first five chapters of the Madhyamakāvatārabhāṣya, a work that presents the steps of the path to full Awakening according to the “Great Vehicle” of Buddhism. The author of the work, the Indian scholar Candrakīrti (circa A.D. 570–650), is one of the most important representatives of the Madhyamaka, the “Middle Way,” school—one of the two main schools of the Great Vehicle—which was founded by Nāgārjuna in the second or third century.

    Description: The publication gives a complete documentation of the old rescue excavations by Josef Bayer and Viktor Lebzelter in 1931 as well as of the systematic investigations of the Neolithic cemetery under the direction of Johannes-Wolfgang Neugebauer and Christine Neugebauer-Maresch between 1987–1991. The burial customs of this early farming population are analyzed together with the grave goods, which comprise an exceptionally large number of grinding stones, as well as ceramics, bone tools, shell ornaments, chert and traces of red ochre. The results of analyses of anthropological remains pertaining to 57 inhumations − more than half of the bodies were oriented SE-NW and the majority buried in a crouched position on the left side − are complemented by 14C-dates and isotope-analyses.

    Description: Religions of foreign origin have shaped Chinese cultural history much stronger than generally assumed and continue to have impact on Chinese society in varying regional degrees. The essays collected in the present volume put a special emphasis on these “foreign” and less familiar aspects of Chinese religion. Apart from an introductory article on Daoism (the prototypical autochthonous religion of China), the volume reflects China’s encounter with religions of the so-called Western Regions, starting from the adoption of Indian Buddhism to early settlements of religious minorities from the Near East (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism) and the early modern debates between Confucians and Christian missionaries. Dabei sind die gesundheitlichen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels nicht gleichmäßig auf die Bevölkerungsgruppen verteilt. Ältere Menschen sind beispielsweise physiologisch anfälliger für extreme Hitze, während Migranten mit geringeren sozioökonomische Ressourcen über eine geringere Anpassungsfähigkeit verfügen. Es gibt zahlreiche Handlungsoptionen, um die Gesundheitsfolgen des Klimawandels abzuschwächen und die Vulnerabilität zu reduzieren. Diese reichen von besserer Information schwer erreichbarer Personen und städteplanerischen Maßnahmen gegen Hitze bis hin zur Bekämpfung stark allergener Pflanzen sowie einer integralen Ereignisdokumentation von Extremwetterereignissen für gezieltere Maßnahmen bei gestärkter Eigenvorsorge. Die Früherkennung von Infektionserkrankungen erfordert eine Verbesserung der Kompetenzen von Bevölkerung und Gesundheitspersonal. Ebenso kann einer klimabedingt wachsenden gesundheitlichen Ungleichheit durch gesteigerte Gesundheitskompetenz vorgebeugt werden. Gleichzeitig können aber Chancen für Klima und Gesundheit genutzt werden. So kann bei der Ernährung insbesondere die Reduktion des überhöhten Fleischkonsums die Gesundheit verbessern und Treibhausgas-Emissionen (THG) reduzieren. In der Mobilität reduziert eine Verlagerung zu mehr aktiver Mobilität (zu Fuß gehen sowie Rad fahren) und öffentlichem Verkehr insbesondere in Städten gesundheitsrelevante Schadstoff- und Lärmbelastung; sie führt beiderseits zu gesundheitsförderlicher Bewegung und vermindert THG-Emissionen. Die Reduktion des klimarelevanten Flugverkehrs vermindert auch nachteilige Gesundheitsfolgen. Beim Wohnen ist der große Anteil der Ein- und Zweifamilienhäuser im Neubau wegen des hohen Flächen-, Material- und Energieaufwands zu hinterfragen, und attraktives Mehrfamilienwohnen kann durch gesundheitsfördernde und klimafreundliche Stadtplanung forciert werden; thermische Sanierung reduziert zudem den Hitzestress im Sommerhalbjahr. Der Gesundheitssektor selbst ist ebenfalls klimarelevant und begründet die Notwendigkeit einer eigenen Klimastrategie; pharmazeutische Produkte haben einen wesentlichen Anteil am Carbon- Footprint; die Vermeidung unnötiger Diagnostik und Therapien senkt THGEmissionen, PatientInnenrisiken und Gesundheitskosten. Eine Transformation im Schnittfeld von Klima und Gesundheit zu initiieren, erfordert eine übergreifende Zusammenarbeit von Klima- und Gesundheitspolitik und ist eine attraktive Chance zur gleichzeitigen Umsetzung der österreichischen Gesundheitsziele, des Pariser Klimaabkommens und der Nachhaltigkeitsziele der Vereinten Nationen. Die Wissenschaft kann mit Transformationsforschung und forschungsgeleiteter Lehre transformative Entwicklungspfade beschleunigen und neue interdisziplinäre Problemlösungen begünstigen.

The inscription deals with religious and political events in the history of Western Tibet up to the beginning of the 17th century. The introductory part of the study includes a description of the inscription’s general characteristics, a summary of its contents, an enquiry into its date and a discussion of the magistrate Mgon po skyabs, whom the inscription identifies as the “founder” of Dgung ’phur.

    Description: The encounter of Occident and Orient is one of the major topics of our time. This encounter is the theme of the present volume in regards to the Palestinian realm from 1799 to 1948. The contributions of twelve authors from Germany, France, Israel, Italy, Austria, Russia, and Switzerland are concerned with a period in which the ordinary interest for the land of the Bible and Christian history was connected to a much greater cultural and political discourse, which was not only carried out by the western churches, but also by European societies in general. In nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Palestine, many forces were at work; from 1516/17 Palestine belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Beginning in the nineteenth century, especially after 1840, this small territory became an issue for world politics. The maintenance of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire constituted one of the guidelines of the European powers.

    Description: Concessions were strictly delimited enclaves within key trading cities in China, ceded to and governed by foreign powers after ‘unequal treaties’ resulting from military campaigns. Within the international concession of Tientsin (today’s Tianjin), a city to the south-east of Beijing, nine nations were present (1860-1946), but the Austro-Hungarian concession (1901-17) fell into oblivion. Filling this scientific gap is the overall goal of this book: its urban and architectural history will be contextualised here for the first time, making use of hitherto unknown archival material.
    Description: Konzessionen waren genau abgesteckte Handelsenklaven in Chinesischen Handelsstädten, die in Folge aufgezwungener Verträge nach kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen an fremde Besatzungsmächte übergeben und von jenen verwaltet wurden. Innerhalb der Internationalen Konzession von Tientsin (heute Tianjin), einer Stadt südöstlich von Peking, waren zwischen 1860 und 1946 insgesamt neun Nationen präsent, jedoch ist die Österreichisch-Ungarische Konzession (sie bestand zwischen 1901 und 1917) heute komplett in Vergessenheit geraten. Ziel der vorliegenden Publikation ist es, diese wissenschaftliche Fehlstelle zu schließen: ihre städtebauliche und architektonische Entwicklungsgeschichte wird hier das erste Mal kontextualisiert, und dies mit bisher unbekanntem Archivmaterial untermauert.

    Description: This volume is the result of a conference, which was held from June 14–15, 2012 at the Event Centre Schüttkasten in Klement-Oberleis, Lower Austria. The thematic focus of the contributions was the nature of contacts and relations between the settlement areas of the La Tène culture, which are associated with the Celtic tribes of the Boii and Taurisci on the basis of numismatic and written sources. The paradigm shifts in Iron Age archaeology and the veritable explosion of new archaeological materials and find contexts (coins, fibulae, Knotenringe, architecture and settlement features) have found their expression in this volume.

    Description: In these conference proceedings particular attention is paid to the performance of burials and burial rites between 1300 and 750 BC. A change in burial customs took place in large parts of central Europe during the 13th century BC. The dead were no longer buried in inhumation graves – as was customary until then – but were burned and laid to rest in urns. This transformation of burial customs is probably connected to far reaching changes in society and religious beliefs.
    Description: In dem vorliegenden Kongressband werden Bestattung und Ritual in der Region zwischen Mitteleuropa und Griechenland zwischen 1300 und 750 v. Chr. besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Im 13. Jahrhundert v. Chr. fand in weiten Teilen Mitteleuropas eine radikale Veränderung der Grabsitten statt. Die Toten wurden nicht mehr, wie bis dahin üblich, in Körpergräbern bestattet, sondern verbrannt und in Urnen beigesetzt. Es ist wahrscheinlich, dass sich hinter dem Wandel des Begräbnisrituals weitreichende Veränderungen der Gesellschaft und der religiösen Vorstellungen verbergen.

Anschließend werden drei ausgewählte Fallstudien ausführlich beschrieben, um den Reichtum und die Heterogenität der Palimpsestbücher vom Sinai zu zeigen.

    Description: This monograph, based on newly declassified sources from Western and Russian archives as well as on communist texts about international law and neutrality, is the first English-language account of Soviet policy towards neutral yet capitalist Austria during the Cold War. In order to make neutrality a model for the West, the Kremlin presented the unique Soviet-Austrian relationship as "a good example of peaceful coexistence" and a showcase for the benefits a Western state might reap by declaring neutrality. This honor, however, had strings attached: The communist doctrine of neutrality contained obligations that were expected to make it possible to exploit neutral states as instruments of Soviet policy and bring them nearer the socialist bloc.

    Description: The nature of structures comprising part-whole relations belongs to the oldest, most fundamental and still discussed questions of philosophical ontology. Unlike many former approaches, which either give priority to the parts or to the whole of such structures, the present project is an ontological investigation that suggests an alternative to a hierarchical conception of parts and whole with a one-sided dependence relationship. In considering the dynamic ‘in-between’ or interplay of parts and whole, I develop and determine an ontological category called ‘part-whole oscillations’ (pwo).
    Description: Die Beschaffenheit von Strukturen mit Verhältnissen zwischen Ganzen und Teilen gehört zu den ältesten, grundlegendsten und immer noch besprochenen Fragen der philosophischen Ontologie. Im Gegensatz zu vielen früheren Ansätzen, welche entweder die Teile oder das Ganze solcher Strukturen priorisieren, stellt das vorliegende Projekt eine ontologische Untersuchung dar, die eine Alternative zu einem hierarchischen Verständnis von Teilen und Ganzen mit einseitigem Abhängigkeitsverhältnis anbietet.     Description: Since the 1970s, climate change has dominated the international scientific and political agenda. In particular, the foundation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the end of the 1980s played a major role for the further enhancement of efforts in the field of climate change sciences. However, to understand the interaction of the worldwide coordination of climate change sciences as well as the role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and its consequences, it is worthwhile to take a look at the self-conception of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's tasks and work. This paper gives an idea of the history of international climate change science, its representation in public discourse and the role of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change by comprehensively illustrating its tasks, organization and self-image. Furthermore, the article tries to argue that the hitherto accepted concept of science followed within this body fails to integrate the idea of scientific ethics. It can be concluded that the conception of science represented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has heavily influenced worldwide attention to climate change, its becoming part of the political agenda as well as the ethical consequences.

    Description: This contribution presents the state of the art of economy-wide material flow accounting. Starting from a brief recollection of the intellectual and policy history of this approach, we outline system definition, key methodological assumptions, and derived indicators. The next section makes an effort to establish data reliability and uncertainty for a number of existing multinational (European and global) material flow accounting (MFA) data compilations and discusses sources of inconsistencies and variations for some indicators and trends. The results show that the methodology has reached a certain maturity: Coefficients of variation between databases lie in the range of 10% to 20%, and correlations between databases across countries amount to an average R2 of 0.95. After discussing some of the research frontiers for further methodological development, we conclude that the material flow accounting framework and the data generated have reached a maturity that warrants material flow indicators to complement traditional economic and demographic information in providing a sound basis for discussing national and international policies for sustainable resource use.

    Description: Managing solid waste is one of the biggest challenges in urban areas around the world. Technologically advanced economies generate vast amounts of organic waste materials, many of which are disposed to landfills. In the future, efficient use of carbon containing waste and all other waste materials has to be increased to reduce the need for virgin raw materials acquisition, including biomass, and reduce carbon being emitted to the atmosphere therefore mitigating climate change. At end-of-life, carbon-containing waste should not only be treated for energy recovery (e.g. via incineration) but technologies should be applied to recycle the carbon for use as material feedstocks. Thermochemical and biochemical conversion technologies offer the option to utilize organic waste for the production of chemical feedstock and subsequent polymers. The routes towards synthetic materials allow a more closed cycle of materials and can help to reduce dependence on either fossil or biobased raw materials. This chapter summarizes carbon-recycling routes available and investigates how in the long-term they could be applied to enhance waste management in both industrial countries as well as developing and emerging economies. We conclude with a case study looking at the system-wide global warming potential (GWP) and cumulative energy demand (CED) of producing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from organic waste feedstock via gasification followed by Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Results of the analysis indicate that the use of organic waste feedstock is beneficial if greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with landfill diversion are considered.
