Description: Dieser Sammelband widmet sich den römischen Epikern Lucan, Valerius Flaccus, Statius und Silius Italicus. The contributions examine the contrast between genre theory and practice, the interplay of genre interference and intertextuality, and the tension between convention and innovation. The focus is on the relationship of post-Augustan epic poetry to the earlier tradition, i.e. to authoritative predecessors such as Homer, Virgil and Ovid. The self-positioning of later poets in relation to the canon often goes hand in hand with an endeavour to reconfigure traditional elements: By omitting, varying or exaggerating aspects typical of the genre, their works enter into a dialogue with the earlier epics, permanently subverting the audience's horizons of expectation. The integration of non-genre discourses plays a central role here: modern literary concepts for analysing genre interference are critically evaluated in the anthology and incorporated into the interpretation in a reflective manner. The methodological range and innovative approaches in this volume make an important contribution to deepening and expanding the current state of research.

On the other hand, it uses mediality to draw out the central aesthetic tension between artistic creation and the socially oriented functions of mediation.

Description: Der Sonderforschungsbereich Andere Ästhetik untersucht, wie vormoderne Artefakte ihren ästhetischen Status reflektieren. The starting point is three differentiated forms of "Schein" in German: as a ray of light itself, as in "shine," or appearance as becoming visible or, finally, as an illusion – seeming to be so. Description: Oswald Egger’s extensive oeuvre has received only little reception in the field of literary studies. This might be due to the fact that, on account of their complex movements of language, these texts pose the question of whether and how they can be interpreted at all. For a long time, the role of a government spokesman was attributed to him and his claim that he praised the emperor as a philosopher was considered pure rhetoric. Based on the premise of the acceptance model, this work primarily examines the question of how Themistios' great success can be explained, given that he was the main speaker for four successive emperors. The textual examination of the speeches shows that Themistios, as a non-Christian philosopher, differs greatly from the Neoplatonic philosophers of his time and that they in particular denied Themistios the right to speak as a philosopher. One result of the study is that the group of non-Christian philosophers was less homogeneous than previously assumed, and that Themistios was closer to Christian ideas of domination than previously assumed. It turns out that Themistios' idea of a good ruler cannot be reconciled with that of the Neoplatonists and yet it was very popular with the majority of the elites. Themistios can therefore be regarded as one of the first political philosophers.

; The triumphal procession determined the thoughts and actions of the Romans to a great extent. This applies not only to the period of the late Republic, in which triumphal processions were fiercely contested, but also to the early imperial period, in which the ritual increasingly disappeared from everyday life. In addition to texts that refer back to the Roman triumph, this volume examines above all those that inscribe the triumph as a model performatively or metaphorically: While Caesar immortalises his own campaign in De bello Gallico, Pliny the Elder presents his Naturalis Historia as a triumph of science. Cicero and Vitruvius transfer the concept to the intellectual realms of rhetoric and architecture, and the early imperial Laus Pisonis makes the life of an imperial aristocrat appear as a single triumphal procession. The notion of conceptual metaphor makes it possible to understand the triumph as an intertextual and intermedial model and to examine its actualisation in different contexts. By systematising the heterogeneous texts, taking cultural studies concepts into account, this volume makes an important contribution to the study of ancient aesthetics and cultural identity.

Description: The life and miracles of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia are the subject of the 'Life of Elisabeth' by the Eisenach council scribe Johannes Rothe (ca. 1360-1434). Rothe, who had already written spiritual works and three extensive chronicles ('Eisenacher Stadtchronik', 'Thüringische Landeschronik' and 'Weltchronik'), offers a comprehensive rendition of the chronicle and legendary tradition in the rhyming verse legend of over 4,000 verses, whereby, in addition to the chronicles, he particularly exploits the Latin Vita of Dietrich von Apolda. In the formal connection to the legends of the saints and the orientation towards chronicles in terms of content, Rothe adopts a cross-genre standpoint. Elisabeth's life is integrated into the genealogy of the landgrave's dynasty and thus becomes part of the landgrave's memorial culture. In the history of the text's reception, with numerous copies up to the 18th century, there is evidence of corresponding emphases: the work was used partly as a devotional book and partly as part of the dynastic memoria of the Thuringian dynasty.

Description: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s.

Description: Literary description emerges as one of the central elements of late antique poetry. It serves a dual role in that it interacts both to represent multisensory perceptions and to break through the illusion it creates through metapoetic discourse. This self-referentiality makes the late antique descriptive a space of intense literary communication between poet and readership in different genres and contexts. This study systematically examines the textual strategies of description in selected works by the poets Claudian, Prudence and Ausonius, who were active between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The texts are analysed with regard to ancient conceptualisations of descriptio and with the help of modern models of literary and cultural studies. The texts show both a continuation and an intensification of already existing traditions, which are expressed in a productive use of intertexts, a complex mediality and a textual world that plays with distance and proximity.

Description: This first German-language portrayal of Spanish literature in the digital age offers interpretations that go "against the grain." It makes no claims to academic completeness but is about the transgressive potential of Iberian authors from Cervantes to the present. Special, especially consequential texts are placed within the context of social history (e.g., of the autonomous regions) and are also discussed from a feminist and queer perspective.

The process of elaboration is governed by the tension between the perfect and imperfect, polish and rawness, and by the realization of an ideal or departure from it. The book illustrates this process with regard to the history of graphic design and based on two case studies.

Description: At both the center and periphery of empire, patterns of access to imperial centers developed quite differently according to membership in different elite groups. The persistence of imperial systems may have depended on the successful maintenance of such options for access. This volume examines imperial orders from this perspective in Europe, the Middle East, India, and China, from late antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages.

Description: This study provides a fundamental new reading of numerous commonplace positions in Germanic medieval studies relating to the physical beauty of literary figures. It looks at both canonic and more marginal Middle High German poems (Erec, Parzival, Welscher Gast [The Romance Stranger]) as well as their Medieval Latin context (poetorhetorics) and their discursive matrix, which is based in theology.

Description: Digital media are transforming narratives and literary texts. They are also changing how we think about the present. It is against this backdrop that this volume inquires into the status of contemporary literature after digitalization: What role do new concepts of time play in writing? What forms of temporal reflection have shaped the novels of the last fifteen years? Which new modes of writing are being developed in digital media?

Description: Non-realistic narratives are currently immensely popular but have been frequently accused of political escapism. This study models counterfactuality using theories of fiction and shows the great affinity that this narrative technique shares with political writing. Analyses of works by Christian Kracht, Kathrin Röggla, Juli Zeh, and Leif Randt demonstrate the diversity and relevance of political variations on reality in contemporary literature.

Description: The 19th century was, in Walter Benjamin’s diagnosis, “addicted to dwelling.” That era’s sense of space – what August Schmarsow called its Raumgefühl – shaped the narratives of Thomas Mann. This study examines Mann’s literary concepts of space and interprets them less in terms of particular texts than as descriptions of material culture. It also explores the discourse, history, and ideology behind those concepts.

Description: In political and media debates, questions of societal homogeneity and heterogeneity are discussed using the keyword "parallel societies." Description: What is the relationship between literature and the sciences? What scientific insights has it adopted and which knowledge has it produced in the process? These are the kinds of research questions that this volume is the first to discuss in relation to the previously neglected field of GDR literature, which had a productive, critical relationship to the societally central "productive power of science," which was seen as "revolutionary."

Description: Hybrid narratives between fact and fiction are all the rage these days. Frequently, they are characterized as “docu-fiction,” though it is unclear which staged references to self and others are actually covered by the concept. The interdisciplinary volume analyses the forms and functions of docu-fictional narration in literature and media and works to define the contours of the term.

Description: To honor the 20th year of his reign, Emperor Constantine was given what may be the most precious gift of his lifetime: a codex of artistic panegyrics and odes dedicated to him by the poet Optatianus. Optatianus’ poems showcase the poetic talent of their creator and go beyond the classical confines of a panegyric: they form a literary invitation to an intellectual bond between laudator and laudandus.
