    Description: Auch wenn im Zuge des Iconic-Turns Historiker vermehrt auf Bildquellen zurückgriffen, so blieben die verbreitetsten Bildmedien der poströmischen Zeit, nämlich Münzen und Siegel, in Handbüchern und Studien unterrepräsentiert. Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht. Kennzeichnend für seinen Ansatz sind die ästhetischen Verfahrensweisen, durch die er einen originären Beitrag in der langen Tradition der Auseinandersetzung zwischen wissenschaftlicher und künstlerischer Aneignung von Geschichte leistet. Andre Bartoniczek arbeitet die Signaturen dieser Tradition auf, zeichnet die Entwicklung des Dokumentarfilms nach und liefert als erste umfangreiche Untersuchung Veiels geschichtlicher Filme eine Werkanalyse, die letztlich der Frage nachgeht: Was ist und wie gelingt historische Erinnerung? Dabei kommt auch der Filmemacher selbst zu Wort.

Andreas Becker fokussiert auf die von den zentralen Akteuren verwendeten Vergleichspraktiken und stellt deren Produktivität als zentralen Mechanismus von Herrschaftsorganisation heraus. Dabei fasst er die dort entstehenden Beziehungen weder als einseitig-übermächtigend, noch zeichnet er Schweden als einen »guten Kolonisator«. Stattdessen hebt er die Notwendigkeit von Aushandlung in einer innereuropäischen kolonialen Kontaktzone hervor, die bisher nicht auf diese Art untersucht wurde.

    Description: This volume concludes the edition of Heinrich von Mügeln's smaller poems. This is the first complete edition of the hymns of one of the most important poets of the 14th century. The volume also contains two of Mügeln's Latin texts: 'Artes liberales' and 'Libri tocius biblie', two summaries on the liberal arts and the books of the Old Testament. The centerpiece of the volume is 'Der meide kranz', an allegorical poem about the struggle between the liberal arts and between the virtues and nature, written in honor of Emperor Charles IV. An index of names and words makes the entire edition accessible and thus forms an essential key to the author's oeuvre.

Seine Briefe entstanden als Reaktion auf ein Dilemma: Nur als Statthalter und Gesandter konnte Foscarini in der Konkurrenz mit anderen venezianischen Adeligen bestehen. In der Peripherie war er aber von den Verteilungswettkämpfen abgeschnitten, die in der Zentrale in geheimen Abstimmungen abliefen. Kunstvolle Briefe an andere Politiker und politisch einflussreiche Intellektuelle sollten das Problem lösen. Diese Briefe nutzten humanistische, juristische und theologische Metaphern, um Themen anzusprechen, die außerhalb der offiziellen Gremien tabu waren. Foscarini legte eine didaktisch aufgebaute Briefsammlung mit den wirksamsten seiner Briefe an –　ein Erfahrungsschatz, den er seinen Söhnen für ihre politischen Laufbahnen hinterließ. Die Publikation kontextualisiert in einer interdisziplinär angelegten Analyse die Einzelbriefe anhand von gelehrten Textvorlagen und Wissensbeständen sowie Archivmaterial. Er fiel in eine Phase, als die »Entdeckung« des Unbewussten und die Begründung der Sexualwissenschaft als interdisziplinäres Fach erst wenige Jahre zurücklagen. Richard Kühl untersucht, wie die neuen Expert*innen im Kriegsraum ein regelrechtes Laboratorium der Triebe vorfanden und sich noch bis in die 1920er Jahre hinein mit den sozialen und kulturellen Kriegsfolgen kontrovers auseinandersetzten. Seine Analysen reichen bis in die Zeit um 1930, in der Sexolog*innen wie Magnus Hirschfeld in der »umkämpften Erinnerung« an die Materialschlachten auf eine Weise mitmischten, die das gesamte politische Spektrum beschäftigte.

    Description: Despite the opposition of two parties - first the Whigs and the Tories, then the Liberals and the Conservatives - 19th century Britain was characterized by a political culture of moderation. The bearers of this political culture were a group of politicians who always sought the middle way between the extremes and were known as Liberal Tories or Liberal Conservatives. This book fills a research gap by examining the development of this British Liberal Conservatism in the period from 1750 to 1850, first looking at Edmund Burke's political philosophy and then showing how the Liberal Tories and Liberal Conservatives who followed him drew on his thinking. It shows how politicians such as George Canning and Sir Robert Peel, based on Burke and the political philosophy of the "Old Whigs", pursued a centrist policy that was always oriented towards the virtues of moderation and prudence. The book thus sheds light on the conservative variant of liberalism that characterized Great Britain throughout the 19th century.

    Description: The life and miracles of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia are the subject of the 'Life of Elisabeth' by the Eisenach council scribe Johannes Rothe (ca. 1360-1434). Rothe, who had already written spiritual works and three extensive chronicles ('Eisenacher Stadtchronik', 'Thüringische Landeschronik' and 'Weltchronik'), offers a comprehensive rendition of the chronicle and legendary tradition in the rhyming verse legend of over 4,000 verses, whereby, in addition to the chronicles, he particularly exploits the Latin Vita of Dietrich von Apolda. In the formal connection to the legends of the saints and the orientation towards chronicles in terms of content, Rothe adopts a cross-genre standpoint. Elisabeth's life is integrated into the genealogy of the landgrave's dynasty and thus becomes part of the landgrave's memorial culture.     Description: The book focuses on the “Tractatus contra Graecos” (1252) by an anonymous Dominican from the convent of Constantinople, a theological dossier outstanding with regard to its various interaction with contemporary Latin-Greek discourses. Polemical theology is, to a certain extent, always making of: Notions of the other church are conveyed, which - if they did not meet their own expectations of the question of church unity - turned from the partner to the enemy. The analysis of these notions shows that under an often polemical text surface there is sometimes a much more original theology than one would expect this genre of text to be, and this theology is the central leitmotif of this book, drawing out and working into the sketch of medieval ecclesiology.

Doch dieses Datum war nicht Ausgangs-, sondern vielmehr Kulminationspunkt politischen und sozialen Wandels. Denn vieles von dem, was sich mit der Chiffre "68" verbindet, begann schon vorher. 1964 verdichteten sich zahlreiche Ereignisse zu einer Zäsur, die den gesellschaftlichen Umbruch schon vor 1968 einläutete. Mit dem Blick auf unterschiedliche Episoden aus Gesellschaft und Politik hinterfragt dieser Band den bisherigen Stellenwert von "68" und weist nach, dass ein erheblicher Teil der mentalen Modernisierung schon viel früher stattfand.
