Description: Feedback from teachers is of great importance for the learning development of pupils. For optimal support of learning processes, it is important how students perceive and utilise feedback. Based on theoretical supply-utilisation models, this book addresses the question of the extent to which students in upper secondary school perceive feedback from teachers in German lessons differently and how this perception affects students' motivation development. The findings from latent change models provide information on the stability and change in feedback perception over the course of a school term as well as on differences in feedback perception between students. In addition, the longitudinal analyses highlight the interplay between different dimensions of feedback quality and the development of learning motivation. The findings expand the state of research on the perception of feedback and the development of differentiated effects on motivation and also open up a wide range of suggestions for educational practice.

Description: The expansion of all-day schools should lead, among other things, to a changed teaching and learning culture that promotes motivational-affective competencies in students. But even after 20 years, all-day elementary schools do not seem to fulfill this. Scientific quality criteria are too rarely implemented in elementary schools. The aim of this dissertation was to investigate the effect of an (interlocked) extracurricular science program on elementary school students regarding their motivational-affective characteristics. For this purpose, an (interlocked) offer was implemented in the intervention study, whereby this was linked to physical education in half of the schools. The analysis of the questionnaires of 236 pupils showed that participation in a science offer can be profitable, but that the interlocking is not as highly effective as expected. The study suggests changing the intra-school structure and revising the understanding of interlocking.

Description: What does the discipline of educational science ‚know‘ about ‚education‘ - the term that stands unchallenged at the core of educational knowledge? The present study asks, on the one hand, about the bodies of knowledge on education that has been handed down in disciplinary lexicons from almost a hundred years and, on the other hand, about the discipline that becomes visible in this stored knowledge. The knowledge stocks contouring educational knowledge are examined serially on three levels. (1.) that of the framing lexicon, (2.) that of the lemma titles associated with ‚education‘, and (3.) that of the explications‘ texts which specifically are devoted to the object of ‚education‘. In addition, (4.) the personal, textual and thematic reference spaces spanned in the explications are analyzed. The quantifying evaluation of the bodies of knowledge - such as lexical data and metadata, data in front of editors and authors, words, references, names, citations, and bibliographical references - is combined with a qualitative content-analytical reconstruction of knowledge configurations as they appear in prefaces and epilogues as well as in the explications of the educational lemmas. The project will elaborate the conjunctures, (dis)continuities, appropriations, and boundary markings of disciplinary knowledge on ‚education‘ from 1895 to 1989 - a period in which German-language educational science institutionalized, established, specialized, and diversified itself as a university-based, researching discipline.

Description: In 2020, the Institute for Educational Science celebrated its 100-year anniversary – in 1920 Herman Nohl became the first professor for Pedagogy and subsequently founded the Pedagogic Seminar in July 1920. In celebration of this jubilee, the contributions to this edition bring forward various aspects of the history of educational science at the University of Göttingen. The book includes two lectures, which were given during the ceremonial act on 29 January 2020 and discuss the development of pedagogy as a discipline before its institutionalization. Additionally, it sheds light onto names, places and programs, which played an important part in the Institute’s history. Finally, the research methods are discussed from a reflexive point of view, including questions regarding data collection and the presentation of results.

Description: Classes with a special emphasis (so-called profile classes) represent a central element of current school development processes and are considered as one of the most prominent ways of practical implementation of school autonomy. At the secondary level, profile classes in music and science (music and STEM classes) are becoming increasingly popular. Specific features of profile classes (including additional lessons, innovative and practice-based teaching and learning formats, and the involvement of student labs) are associated with various pedagogical potentials – especially in terms of fostering students’ interest and their self-concept. However, there is a research gap regarding the development of students’ subject-related interests and their self-concept in profile classes at the secondary level. The findings of the present study indicate differences in the development of the interests in music and science as well as the domain-specific self-concept between music classes, STEM classes and classes without a specific profile. Using cross-lagged-panel-models, the longitudinal relations among interest and self-concept are estimated in addition to the correlations of the constructs within each wave and the autoregressive effects within each construct over time. In this regard, differences in the cross-lagged panel models between profile classes and classes without a specific profile are examined. The results allow an evaluation of the potential of profile classes in order to promote students’ interest and self-concept and offer a variety of implications for pedagogical practice.

Description: What relations (of difference) between students develop in such practices of ‘Planarbeit’ in individualized secondary school teaching in which students relate to instructional tasks and to each other? In this study, a (video-)ethnographic approach is chosen to explore the contribution of students to the formation of social order in the classroom. The findings show that the ‘Selbstständigkeit’ (independence) of students in individualized plan-teaching, which relies on students not only showing themselves responsible for their own progression, but also as ‘mit-zuständig’ (co-responsible) for the progression of the work processes of their classmates, is relational: The continuation, the resuming and the appropriateness of individual progressions is socially accounted for and practiced in task-related references between students – which is associated not only with specific practices, but also with relations of difference between those involved.

Description: Inclusive teaching and school development is currently a central topic of educational research on schools, teaching, and professionalization. However, the German school type of Gymnasium (grammar school) is rarely taken into account. Nevertheless, changes in the general conditions and the associated reform expectations of the last decades are also reflected in studies on Gymnasium. With the three exploratory studies contained in this volume, we ask how inclusion at respectively for the Gymnasium is addressed by teachers at that type of school and by students in a Gymnasium teacher training program. The state of research on the perspectives of teachers as well as students in teacher training programs on inclusion is presented in a separate article. The discussion will be introduced with a contribution on the position of Gymnasium in the structured school system in Germany and the resulting challenges for an inclusive school development that includes the Gymnasium.

Description: Although the school class is highly relevant for the school organization of instruction, it is predominantly addressed in empirical school research as an explanandum. The sociality of the school class, on the other hand, has hardly been focused on as an empirical object of research. The aim of this paper is to address this desideratum by considering the school class as an object that is constituted in a variety of ways in different discourses. It also asks how classroom teachers construct the school class in everyday-based discourse and relate themselves to it. Different types of data are used to examine how which normative conceptions of school classes are produced in educational, programmatic, and everyday-based discourse. Contributions in scholarly and contemporary practice-instructional literature, as well as specially collected interviews with classroom teachers in secondary schools, serve as data materials. The interviews, as well as the idea for this study, were developed within the framework of the project on making school classes at the Department of Empirical Research on Teaching and School Development at the Institute of Educational Science at the University of Göttingen.
