    Description: This book reprints articles from the Special Issue "Advances in Computer-Aided Technology" published online in the open-access journal Machines (ISSN 2075-1702). This book consists of thirteen published articles. This Special Issue belongs to the "Mechatronic and Intelligent Machines" section. Industry 4.0 is characterized by the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and cloud computing, into traditional manufacturing and production processes. CAx (Computer-Aided Systems) systems are a set of computer software tools used in engineering and product design, covering various stages of the product development cycle. Advanced CAx tools combine many different aspects of product lifecycle management (PLM), including design, finite element analysis (FEA), manufacturing, production planning and product. In connection with the transition to Industry 4.0 concepts, the concept of the digital twin comes to the fore, and existing CAx systems must adapt to this trend.     Description: “Information Theory and Language” is a collection of 12 articles that appeared recently in Entropy as part of a Special Issue of the same title. These contributions represent state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research at the interface of information theory and language studies. They concern in particular: • Applications of information theoretic concepts such as Shannon and Rényi entropies, mutual information, and rate–distortion curves to the research of natural languages; • Mathematical work in information theory inspired by natural language phenomena, such as deriving moments of subword complexity or proving continuity of mutual information; • Empirical and theoretical investigation of quantitative laws of natural language such as Zipf’s law, Herdan’s law, and Menzerath–Altmann’s law; • Empirical and theoretical investigations of statistical language models, including recently developed neural language models, their entropies, and other parameters; • Standardizing language resources for statistical investigation of natural language; • Other topics concerning semantics, syntax, and critical phenomena. Whereas the traditional divide between probabilistic and formal approaches to human language, cultivated in the disjoint scholarships of natural sciences and humanities, has been blurred in recent years, this book can contribute to pointing out potential areas of future research cross-fertilization.

    Description: Studies in the fields of bilingualism and second language acquisition have shown that both cognitive and affective psychological factors can influence individuals’ bilingual speech production. More recently, both experimental and variationist studies of bilingual communities have examined the role of social factors on bilinguals’ speech, particularly in cases of long-term language contact and minority-language bilingualism. The Special Issue brings together work on the psychological and/or social factors that influence bilingual speech production as well as work that uses different methodological frameworks. We examine the role of such factors on bilingual speech production in diverse contexts, in order to provide a more holistic account of the ways in which extra-linguistic influences may affect bilinguals’ speech in one or both of their languages.

    Description: 〈P〉Vasilij Kirillovič Trediakovskij: dieser Name allein schreckt die meisten Leser ab. Daß dieser Gelehrte neben Lomonosov zu den Gründern der neueren russischen Literatur gehört, wird selten gebührend erwähnt. Diese Arbeit soll von ihm handeln, und besonders von einem Werk, das beinahe nicht zur Kenntnis genommen wird. Es soll eine gänzlich in Vergessenheit geratene Begegnung wieder ans Licht kommen: die Begegnung zwischen dem Autor Trediakovskij, dessen Rolle in der Literaturgeschichte unterschätzt wird, und einem Roman John Barclays, der "Argenis", dem in ganz Europa populärsten Roman des 17. Jahrhunderts. Hier wird eine Übersetzung Gegenstand sein; dennoch handelt es sich hier keineswegs um eine übersetzungskritische Arbeit. 〈/P〉

    Description: This synchronic study presents a new onomasiological, frame-theoretical model for the description, classification and theoretical analysis of the cross-linguistic content category aspectuality. It deals specifically with those pieces of information, which, in their interplay, constitute the aspectual value of states of affairs. The focus is on Romance Languages, although the model can be applied just as well to other languages, in that it is underpinned by a principle grounded in a fundamental cognitive ability: the delimitation principle. Unlike traditional approaches, which generally have a semasiological orientation and strictly adhere to a semantic differentiation between grammatical aspect and lexical aspect (Aktionsart), this study makes no such differentiation and understands these as merely different formal realisations of one and the same content category: aspectuality.

    Description: The inclusion of works in a canonical list creates a large body of exclusions. But among these neglected works there are not a few that nevertheless are worth reading. Literary worth is not necessarily aesthetic impeccability. A literary work recommends itself by a high degree of artistic achievement with elbowroom for historical importance. The present study focuses on Leo Rosten’s immigration novel The Education of Hyman Kaplan (1937) and Archibald MacLeish’s radio play Air Raid (1938). The first is more than the apparent compendium of language-based jokes. Read in the context of immigration policy from Presidents Theodore Roosevelt to F. D. Roosevelt and of Jewish-American humor, it displays Kaplan’s moral and intellectual growth, which extant commentary denies, and exhibits the “interior internationality” of an immigration country. Air Raid is one of the few achieved American radio plays to take a stand on foreign affairs in a context that does not only consist of broadcasting and Picasso’s collage-painting Guernica – the “screaming picture” which MacLeish transposed into the acoustic medium – but also of the historical saturation bombing of the Basque town.

    Description: This open access book is based on selected presentations from Topic Study Group 21: Mathematical Applications and Modelling in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at the 13th International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME 13), held in Hamburg, Germany on July 24–31, 2016. It contributes to the theory, research and teaching practice concerning this key topic by taking into account the importance of relations between mathematics and the real world. Further, the book addresses the “balancing act” between developing students’ modelling skills on the one hand, and using modelling to help them learn mathematics on the other, which arises from the integration of modelling into classrooms. The contributions, prepared by authors from 9 countries, reflect the spectrum of international debates on the topic, and the examples presented span schooling from years 1 to 12, teacher education, and teaching modelling at the tertiary level. In addition the book highlights professional learning and development for in-service teachers, particularly in systems where the introduction of modelling into curricula means reassessing how mathematics is taught. Sprache fungiert dabei als Differenzkategorie, durch die Gruppen gebildet, Anerkennungen und Zugehörigkeiten verhandelt sowie Subjektpositionen als Identitätsschablonen angeboten werden. Anhand der Interpretativen Subjektivierungsanalyse untersucht die Autorin, welches Wissen im Bildungsdiskurs über Sprache(n) und Sprecher*innen vermittelt wird und wie sich Schüler*innen mit diesem Wissen auseinandersetzen.; More than any other institution, school has an influence on the subjectivation of children and young people. Language functions here as a category of difference, through which groups are formed, recognitions and affiliations are negotiated, and subject positions are offered as identity templates. Using Interpretative Analysis of Subjectivation, the author examines what knowledge is conveyed in the educational discourse about language(s) and speakers and how students deal with this knowledge.

    Description: This open access report explores the nature and extent of students’ misconceptions and misunderstandings related to core concepts in physics and mathematics and physics across grades four, eight and 12. Twenty years of data from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and TIMSS Advanced assessments are analyzed, specifically for five countries (Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovenia, and the United States) who participated in all or almost all TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced assessments between 1995 and 2015. The report focuses on students’ understandings related to gravitational force in physics and linear equations in mathematics. It identifies some specific misconceptions, errors, and misunderstandings demonstrated by the TIMSS Advanced grade 12 students for these core concepts, and shows how these can be traced back to poor foundational development of these concepts in earlier grades. Patterns in misconceptions and misunderstandings are reported by grade, country, and gender. In addition, specific misconceptions and misunderstandings are tracked over time, using trend items administered in multiple assessment cycles. The study and associated methodology may enable education systems to help identify specific needs in the curriculum, improve inform instruction across grades and also raise possibilities for future TIMSS assessment design and reporting that may provide more diagnostic outcomes.

    Description: Im naturwissenschaftlichen Unterricht zielt das Lernen in Kontexten primär darauf ab, die Lernenden näher an ihre Lebenswelt heranzuführen und so ihr Interesse zu steigern. Die vorliegende Studie fokussiert die Wahrnehmung und Wirksamkeit authentischer Kontexte mit physikalisch-technischem Bezug im Lehr-Lern-Labor und nimmt dabei sowohl die Lernenden als auch zukünftige Lehrende in den Blick. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Forschungsarbeit wurde das Potenzial von authentischen Kontexten im Bereich von Physik und Technik zur Förderung affektiver Merkmale wie Interesse, Einstellungen und Fähigkeitsselbstkonzept sowohl bei Lehramtsstudierenden wie bei Schüler:innen der Sekundarstufe I untersucht. In zwei Interventionsstudien wurden Themen aktueller Forschung als authentische Lernkontexte im Setting eines Lehr-Lern-Labors eingesetzt. Die empirische Prüfung der Interventionswirkung erfolgte anhand eines quantitativen, quasi-experimentellen Designs mit insgesamt N=176 Lehramtsstudierenden und N=1.156 Schüler:innen. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit zeigen, dass die stark fachlich geprägten Forschungsprojekte didaktisch aufbereitet als Lehr-Lern-Material von den Proband:innen authentisch eingeschätzt werden. Das Lernen mit solchen Kontexten ermöglicht eine positive Entwicklung affektiver Merkmale sowohl bei den Lehramtsstudierenden als auch bei den Schüler:innen.

    Description: Despite the current need for reliable and valid test instruments to monitor the sign language acquisition of Deaf children in different countries, very few tests offering strong evidence for their psychometric properties are commercially available. A German Sign Language (DGS) test that focuses on linguistic structures acquired in preschool- and school-aged children (4-8 years old) is urgently needed. The present study uses as a template a test which has sound psychometric properties and has been standardized on another sign language as a starting point for tests of sign languages that are less documented, such as DGS.This book makes a novel contribution to the field by examining linguistic, cultural, methodological, and theoretical issues in the process of the adaptation from the source language test to the target language test, and by providing a model for future test adaptations. It also includes concrete steps for the test development and adaptation process.Adaptation and Evaluation of a German Sign Language Test addresses students and researchers alike who are involved in sign language test development and adaptation.     Description: This book deals with two research fields and brings them together: contrastive linguistics and third language acquisition. The book describes the following linguistic structures in Dutch and Swedish from a contrastive perspective: spatial adverbs, copula, impersonal passives, impersonal constructions and finally the posture verbs stand, zit and lie. Dutch and Swedish are usually acquired as a third language and not as a second language, which implies that learners already comprehend various other languages. When learning a language these multilingual learners have developed certain strategies which draw on their competence in earlier studied languages. In the process of learning a third language, metalinguistic and cross-linguistic awareness play an important role. Comparing linguistic structures in two closely related languages as Dutch and Swedish can enhance cross-linguistic awareness and therefore be used as a didactic tool.

    Description: The uses and practices of sign languages are strongly related to scientific research on sign languages and vice versa. Conversely, sign linguistics cannot be separated from Deaf community practices, including practices in education and interpretation. Therefore, the current volume brings together work on sign language interpreting, the use of spoken and sign language with deaf children with cochlear implants and early language development in children exposed to both a spoken and sign language, and reports on recent research on aspects of sign language structure. It also includes papers addressing methodological issues in sign language research. The book presents papers by more seasoned researchers and new kids on the block, as well as papers in which the two collaborate.     Description: This Open-Access-book explores diversity in its ambivalence. On the one side, we love to describe diversity as a resource for personal, social, economic, and cultural growth. On the other side, categories of differences often lead to discrimination or serve as justifications for privileges. They can cause exclusion and, conversely, promote the self-constitution of discriminated subjects and groups. The book moves within this tension of exclusion and belonging. Case studies of young ethnicized people vividly depict the interwovenness of identity-building and diversity. Theoretically, the book examines the psychosocial and anthropological conditions for constructing the Other. Sharp divisions between We and the Other, between social and national groups, and between humans and nature have devastating, life-threatening consequences. Dichotomous split-offs divide people, nations and the whole world. So, how do we deal with diversity? The author does not provide simple recipes but engages in a phenomenology of diversity that does not press life and its manifestations into categories but keeps them in a limbo of attention by affirming and doubting differences.

    Description: "More and more people have to write in their jobs, and some need to write for publication. Students must learn to write in new genres, and their teachers not only need to write but also help others develop their own writing. Even though writing is often essential for learning a discipline and developing a professional identity, these aspects are often overlooked in academic settings. A surprising number of us struggle with writing, and often do so alone. Writing touches upon deeply personal processes concerning who we are in the eyes of others and how we view ourselves. This book elucidates the creative and subjective sides of professional and academic writing, which are in fact quite similar to those of literary writing. In the interview material, students and researchers share their experiences of the difficulties and the joys of writing, as well as personal decisions they have made in the course of becoming creative writers in their fields. In the discussion, a conceptual repertoire is developed from the philosophy of education, theories of identity development and recognition, to transcend the common belief that writing is something we either can or cannot master. The book will be of use to those who help others to write, and a source of inspiration for those who struggle with their own writing. The author is director of the Academic Writing Centre at the University of Oslo Library and editorial director of the website Søk & Skriv (Search & Write). She holds a doctoral degree in the philosophy of education and has many years’ experience as a university lecturer, supervisor and professional academic writer."

Studenter må lære seg å skrive i nye sjangre, og lærerne deres må ikke bare skrive selv, men også hjelpe andre med å gjøre det. Selv om det å skrive ofte er vesentlig for å tilegne seg et fag og en faglig identitet, er disse sidene ved arbeidet som regel lite belyst innenfor den faglige virksomheten. Overraskende mange sliter med å skrive, og de gjør det ofte alene. Skriving berører dypt personlige prosesser som angår hvem vi er for andre og hvordan vi ser på oss selv. Boka retter søkelys mot de kreative og subjektive sidene ved skriveprosessen i faglitterær skriving, som viser seg å ikke være så forskjellige fra den skjønnlitterære skrivingen. Her intervjues studenter og forskere som setter ord på det vanskelige ved skriveprosessen, gledene ved skriving og beslutningene underveis i utviklingen mot å bli en faglig, kreativ skriver.     Description: The Bologna Process, whose objective is the creation of an „European Higher Education Area“, should be concluded in 2010. In the last years the reactions ranged from total rejection over a more temporising attitude to clear and unambiguous affirmation. Hence, the „Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (FaDaF – association for German as a foreign language) has accepted the challenge to enter on the level of science policy the discussion about the higher education structural reforms as far as the subject of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) is concerned. With the help of reports on the current situation and the future of the DaF degree programmes in various European countries, contributions regarding the crucial problems of the higher education structural reforms and a position paper about the curricular basis of the BA/MA degree programmes in the field of German as a foreign language, the basic parameters of the ongoing restructuring in this subject are discussed here.

Reaktionen der absoluten Ablehnung, des Abwartens oder der klaren und eindeutigen Zustimmung prägten das Bild in den letzten Jahren. Der Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache (FaDaF) hat sich deshalb die Aufgabe gestellt, die Diskussion zur Studienstrukturreform im Fach Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) aufzunehmen und wissenschaftspolitisch zu begleiten. Mit Länderberichten zur aktuellen Lage und Zukunft der DaF-Studiengänge Europas, Beiträgen zu den Kernproblemen der Studienstrukturreform sowie einem Grundsatzpapier zur curricularen Basis der BA/MA-Studiengänge im Fach DaF werden die Grundparameter beleuchtet, die für die fortschreitende Umstrukturierung im Fach bedeutsam sind.

    Description: This empirical study examines the importance of dialect and dialect use in Switzerland. Based on interdisciplinary approaches, it explores the extent to which linguistic perception and assessment on the part of laypersons is connected to actual language use. It shows that dialects are constructed by means of discursive processes and reproduced in language use. In this way, it illuminates how speakers create dialects.

    Description: St Martin of Tours is one of Christianity’s major saints and his significance reaches far beyond the powerful radiance of his iconic act of charity. While the saint and his cult have been researched comprehensively in Germany and France, his cult in the British Isles proves to be fairly unexplored. Andre Mertens closes this gap for Anglo-Saxon England by editing all the age’s surviving texts on the saint, including a commentary and translations. Moreover, Mertens looks beyond the horizon of the surviving body of literary relics and dedicates an introductory study to an analysis of the saint’s cult in Anglo-Saxon England and his significance for Anglo-Saxon culture.
    Description: Der Heilige Martin von Tours ist eine der zentralen Heiligenfiguren des Christentums, dessen Bedeutung weit über die Strahlkraft der berühmten Mantelteilungsszene hinausgeht. Während der Heilige und sein Kult besonders im deutschen und französischen Sprachraum umfassend erforscht sind, ist der Kult des Heiligen auf den Britischen Inseln nahezu unerforscht. Andre Mertens schließt in der vorliegenden Arbeit diese Lücke für das angelsächsische England, indem er sämtliche Texte über den Heiligen aus dieser Literaturepoche ediert und sie mit einem Kommentar und einer Übersetzung versehen präsentiert. Über den literaturhistorischen Horizont hinaus widmet sich Mertens in seiner einleitenden Studie dem Kult des Heiligen und seiner Bedeutung für das angelsächsische England.

    Description: This Open Access book is about the development of a common understanding of environmental citizenship. It conceptualizes and frames environmental citizenship taking an educational perspective. Organized in four complementary parts, the book first explains the political, economic and societal dimensions of the concept. Next, it examines environmental citizenship as a psychological concept with a specific focus on knowledge, values, beliefs and attitudes. It then explores environmental citizenship within the context of environmental education and education for sustainability. It elaborates responsible environmental behaviour, youth activism and education for sustainability through the lens of environmental citizenship. Finally, it discusses the concept within the context of different educational levels, such as primary and secondary education in formal and non-formal settings. Environmental citizenship is a key factor in sustainability, green and cycle economy, and low-carbon society, and an important aspect in addressing global environmental problems. It has been an influential concept in many different arenas such as economy, policy, philosophy, and organizational marketing. In the field of education, the concept could be better exploited and established, however. Education and, especially, environmental discourses in science education have a great deal to contribute to the adoption and promotion of environmental citizenship.

    Description: Since the “scuola urbinate” (e. g. B. Gentili) applied the oral theory to the Greek lyricists, orality is seen to have influenced thought and language not only of rhapsodists, but of archaic authors in general. Against this background, I investigate how the interaction between orality and literacy, which I suggest to call “aurality”, influences the semantics and the linguistic reasoning chiefly of Heraclitus among the early presocratic thinkers. On the one hand Heraclitus is an oral “image-thinker” (Havelock) and his prose is poetically constructed; on the other hand only by writing he can figure out the discourse (λόγος) as a ὀνόματα-composed unity, as I mean he does, rather than holistic or as a continuum, what is common in oral societies. Such a λόγος is able to serve as a cosmological model, for the physical world consisting of a multiplicity of phenomena closely jointed to each other into an invisible unity.
    Description: Im allgemeinen Verständnis begründen die Vorsokratiker das philosophische Fachwissen und die philosophische Fachsprache. Diese Annahme wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit mittels einer semantischen Analyse revidiert: die Sprache der Vorsokratiker meidet nicht, sondern zielt geradezu auf mehrdeutige und redundante Ausdrucksweisen. Hier ist der nicht-terminologische Gebrauch von logos bei Heraklit besonders aufschlussreich. In der Bedeutung dieses Lexems, die an den bis zur Zeit des Ephesiers belegten Verwendungskontexten untersucht wird, zeigt sich die noch wirkende Kontinuität mit der legein- Grundbedeutung „sammeln“: die „Rede“ besteht nämlich aus einer Sammlung einzelner epea bzw. onomata. Aufgrund ihrer synthetischen Struktur ist sie geeignet, eine heuristische Funktion für das menschliche Verstehen der latenten Einheit scheinbar loser Erscheinungen zu erfüllen. Sowohl formal, in der Art, wie das Lexem semantisch aufgeladen wird, als auch inhaltlich, in der spezifi sch herakliteischen Interdependenz zwischen Realität und Sprache, lassen sich in dem logos des Heraklit Charakteristika erkennen, die auf den Übergang von der Mündlichkeit zur Schriftlichkeit zurückgeführt werden können.Secondo la communis opinio, i Presocratici segnano l’inizio della filosofi a come disciplina e del relativo linguaggio specialistico. L’esame si concentra sull’uso non terminologico di logos in Eraclito. Il signifi cato del lessema, stabilito in base ai contesti d’uso attestati fi no all’epoca dell’Efesio ed affrancato dalla successiva Wirkungsgeschichte, è ancora contraddistinto dall’idea del ‘raccogliere insieme’ (legein): il ‘discorso’, infatti, consiste nella sintesi di singoli epea (detti) ed onomata (nomi). Mostrando il farsi uno dei molti, il logos assume dunque una funzione euristica per la comprensione dell’unità di fenomeni apparentemente irrelati o contraddittori.     Description: Die vorliegende Arbeit ist eine Beschreibung des Nominalsystems im Uspenskij Sbornik, einer russisch-kirchenslavischen Sammelhandschrift aus dem 12.-13. Jahrhundert. Es handelt sich dabei um den ältesten erhaltenen ostslavischen Sammelband, der neben Werken der Übersetzungsliteratur auch Werke ostslavischer Herkunft, das Skazanie von Boris und Gleb, das Skazanie von den Wundern der beiden Heiligen Roman und David und die Vita des Feodosij Pečerskij enthält. Dazu kommen aus der ältesten Zeit des slavischen Schrifttums die Vita des Slavenapostels Method und die Laudatio für Kyrill und Method, ferner eine Homilie über Christi Himmelfahrt, die seit Kalajdovič als Originalwerk des Exarchen Johannes gilt.

    Description: Education in Asia Pacific countries is being transformed by globalisation and the market economy. Most economies within the region have flourished due to increased regional capital flow, trade and other forms of economic and political interaction. The Asia Pacific also has rich and unique traditions, which create cultural diversity as well as common challenges, including obstacles of language and geographical separation. Additionally, there is a growing reaction to the predominance of Western social theories that is fuelling recognition of and movement towards theories that reference the wide range of contextual and cultural perspectives available in the East. Contributors offer Eastern-oriented perspectives on teacher education, parent participation, government withdrawal, textbook content, uses of modern technology, the challenges of migrating families and tertiary students who travel from overseas for study. Their commentaries highlight issues of equity, identity and social justice.

    Description: This chapter provides an overview of state-of-the-art research revolving around China’s use of economic and financial means to serve foreign policy objectives with normative implications, defined here as normative economic statecraft. The chapter’s overview of China’s use of economic statecraft reveals its breadth and diversity. China also indirectly challenges existing international norms of economic governance by its alternative modus operandi. As China does not always proclaim its challenge to existing norms, this paper suggests an analytical distinction between stated and concealed normative objectives. Much of China’s challenge to global economic governance norms is concealed. Research on China has revitalized old debates on economic statecraft and geoeconomics, and reoriented their focus from economic coercion (e.g., sanctions) to economic inducements, and alternative institutions and norms. This subfield of China studies thus has a scholarly impact beyond the area studies specialization

    Description: Latin America and the German-speaking countries of Central Europe have for a long time maintained multifaceted and dynamic relations. This close interaction has also had a significant impact on the history and present of institutional Germanic studies in Latin America. There are, however, country-specific differences: while in the case of some locations there is only a rudimentary area of Germanic Studies, in others it is quite broadly established. The main purpose of this volume is to trace the existing diversity. The idea for the publication emerged during the 16th Congress of the Latin American Association of Germanists (ALEG) in Buenos Aires in December 2017. Within the framework of the section "History of Germanic Studies", the need for an anthology with contributions in German became evident, in which the developments and perspectives of Germanic studies in the various Latin American countries and regions are reviewed and discussed. Academics from across Latin America agreed to share insights and findings on the aims and foci of Germanic studies for the book project to be realized. Since the institutional framework of the discipline varies widely in Latin America, the initiators assume a broad concept of Germanic studies that encompasses the teaching and research of literary and cultural studies, as well as linguistic and translation studies, teacher training and the teaching of the German language itself. The anthology combines a total of 22 articles from eleven countries, written by 39 authors, and thus provides a broad and diverse view of the situation of Germanistic studies in Latin America. It includes overviews and analyses from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

    Description: This Special Issue features a collection of state-of-the art articles on the intonational patterns of different types of bilinguals (e.g., second language learners; heritage speakers; simultaneous bilinguals), with a particular focus on understudied language pairings and encompassing a wide variety of languages (e.g. Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, German, English, French, Inuktitut, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, and Spanish). The papers in this Special Issue address a number of questions that have so far remained unanswered: Can we determine a hierarchy of difficulty or transferability? How does prosody interact with other components of the grammar, such as morphology or syntax, in a contact situation? Which aspects are more prone to bidirectional interference? Which changes in intonation make speakers sound foreign in their second (or first) language? The papers in this Special Issue offer answers to these questions and open up multiple avenues for future research. We hope that this Special Issue will inspire future studies on intonation and bilingualism.

    Description: *THIS BOOK WILL SOON BECOME AVAILABLE AS OPEN ACCESS BOOK* This book is an excellent synthesis of the initial and continuing preparation for Mathematics Teaching in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Venezuela, from which comparative analyses can be made that show similarities and differences, and highlight various perspectives. In August 2012, a workshop of the Capacity and Networking Project (CANP) of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) was held in Costa Rica. This CANP brought together for two weeks a group of 66 Mathematics educators, mathematicians, university administrators, and elementary and secondary teachers from Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panamá and Costa Rica. The goal was to promote progress in Mathematics Education in the region; as such it was a unique experience in the region. One of the most important results of this event was the creation of the Mathematics Education Network of Central America and the Caribbean (REDUMATE). It was organized by persons associated with the Mathematics Education Reform Project in Costa Rica (responsible for the most outstanding and innovative curriculum reform in Latin America) and the Inter-American Committee on Mathematics Education (IACME), which is an official regional multinational organization affiliate of ICMI. This book brings to the international Educational Community an important collection of experiences and ideas in the Mathematics Education of four countries of a region within the heart of the American continent, a region that has been many times forgotten. The dissemination of these results can promote the search for international collaborative actions in a wider scale.

    Description: This is the fifth and final volume of lectures on textual criticism and classical philology - broadly understood - given within the framework of the Ars edendi research programme (2008-2015). ;Two of the six papers in this volume stem from a 2015 workshop on editorial theory and method, the theme of which dealt with fragments and the writing of commentaries. As regards the former, S. Douglas Olson problematizes the creation and continuation of scholarly knowledge concerning texts that have only come down to us in a fragmentary state, emphazising the challenges and pitfalls that lay in wait for the editor. Benjamin Millis offers a nuanced homage and apology for the traditional text edition with a scholarly commentary, especially underscoring its importance as a connective pathway between text and reader as well as the impetus it can give to scholarly research. ;The other four lectures were given at the concluding conference of the Ars edendi programme, held in August 2016. In a case study Cynthia Damon shares her reflections on how to digitally edit Pliny’s Natural History in a form that will provide this work’s rich reception history and at the same time its extensive use of sources, many of which are now lost. The digital component is also prominent in Odd Einar Haugen’s contribution in which he shows that digital mark-up is also an editorial enterprise and how it can be useful for the textual scholar. Dorothea Weber gives an insider’s view of the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, an editorial project on-going since 1864, and especially how improved cataloguing has led to numerous discoveries of texts by St. Augustine. As a conclusion to the volume, David Greetham, one of the founders of the Society for Textual Scholarship, reflects on three different methods for editing texts that have undergone various degrees of rescription, namely the oeuvres of Eriugena, Coleridge, and Eliot.

    Description: The author of this thesis is aware that the above-mentioned contrastive studies deal extensively with the aspect and action type issues from their respective perspectives. Nevertheless, she has decided to take a stand on this topic herself. 1. The essay is a Germanic work that represents certain areas of the German language in contrast to Polish. 2. The aim of the work is a linguistic text analysis and not the description of the language systems. For the purposes of the essay, various texts have been selected and analyzed and described according to certain principles. Therefore, the results of the study are text corpus related. 3. The broad definition of aspectuality enables the comparison of different phenomena that are not only related to the verbal level but also take into account the contextual sentence and text levels. 4. Both translation directions Polish-German and German-Polish will be considered in the paper. Not only Polish, but also German original texts provide pertinent signals that need to be described and that can usually be found again in the translation.
    Description: Die Verfasserin dieser Arbeit ist sich dessen bewusst, dass die oben erwähnten kontrastiven Untersuchungen die Aspekt- und Aktionsartproblematik aus ihrer jeweiligen Sicht ausführlich behandeln. Trotzdem hat sie sich entschieden, selbst Stellung zu diesem Thema zu nehmen. 1. Die Abhandlung ist eine germanistische Arbeit, die bestimmte Bereiche der deutschen Sprache im Kontrast zum Polnischen darstellt. 2. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist eine linguistische Textanalyse und nicht die Beschreibung der Sprachsysteme. Für die Zwecke der Abhandlung wurden verschiedene Texte ausgewählt und nach bestimmten Prinzipien analysiert und beschrieben. Von daher sind die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung textkorpusbezogen. 3. Die breite Definition der Aspektualität ermöglicht den Vergleich verschiedener Phänomene, die sich nicht nur auf die verbale Ebene beziehen, sondern auch die kontextuelle Satz- und Textebene berücksichtigen. 4. Beide Übersetzungsrichtungen Polnisch-Deutsch und Deutsch-Polnisch werden in der Abhandlung berücksichtigt. Nicht nur polnische, sondern auch deutsche Originaltexte liefern nämlich aspektuelle Signale, die es zu beschreiben gilt und die in der Regel auch in der Übersetzung wieder zu finden sind.

Vychází z detailního popisu jazyků a dialektů současného Španělska a snaží se načrtnout jazykovou dimenzi konfliktů, ke kterým dochází v tomto mnohojazyčném státě. Popisuje historii a současnost složitého vztahu mezi jazykem oficiálním (španělština) a jazyky kooficiálními (katalánština, baskičtina, galicijština). Ukazuje, že jazykový rozměr je jen jedním z aspektů, byť důležitým, daleko složitějšího konfliktu a že vztah mezi tímto jazykovým rozměrem a dimenzí politickou, kulturní a sociální je daleko komplikovanější, než jak se obvykle prezentuje. Vychází z analýzy aktuálních statistických dat a kromě detailního popisu stavu na jednotlivých dvojjazyčných územích (Baskicko, Galicie, Katalánsko, Valencie, Baleáry) obsahuje též zobecňující komentář, z kterého vyplývá, jak rozdílná je povaha jazykových konfliktů na jednotlivých územích a jak obtížné je hledat řešení na centrální, celošpanělské úrovni.

    Description: Tid for lesing! handler om leseferdighetene til elever i tiårsalderen slik de er målt i den internasjonale undersøkelsen PIRLS i 2021. PIRLS 2021 ble gjennomført under covid-19-pandemien. Undersøkelsen inkluderer både en leseprøve og spørreskjemaer til elever, foresatte, norsklærere og rektorer. Som leseprøve måler PIRLS resultatet av flere års leseopplæring, ikke bare den opplæringa som har funnet sted i femte klasse. Når elevene er blitt ti år gamle, skal den grunnleggende leseferdigheten være nok utviklet til at de skal kunne lese og forstå tekster i mange ulike fag og sammenhenger. Samtidig er elevene fortsatt så unge at leseferdigheten kan forbedres i de tilfellene der ferdigheten er lav. Denne antologien utdyper resultatene fra kortrapporten (mai 2023) gjennom analyser av flere faktorer som kan ha betydning for barns leseutvikling. Kapitlene spenner over en rekke temaer, som betydningen av hjemmemiljø, skole og lærere for elevenes leseprestasjoner, elevenes lesevaner, elever med svake leseprestasjoner, hvordan elevene liker og presterer på tekstene i PIRLS, samt forskjeller mellom elever som tok PIRLS-prøven på papir og digitalt. Vi undersøker også mulige drivkrefter bak nedgangen i norske tiåringers leseforståelse.

The volume encompasses a wide range of contents: 1) The L1 and L2 acquisition of syntax, semantics, phonetics, and the syntax-discourse interface; 2) Data comparisons across different learner groups: L1 Chinese children, L2 Chinese learners, and Chinese heritage speakers; 3) Acquisition of language skills: speaking, listening, and writing; and last but not least, 4) Instructional interventions including consciousness-raising and metacognitive strategy training. The volume is intended to bridge the gap between research and instruction by helping teachers understand their students and their learning. Informed by research, teachers can opt for appropriate pedagogical approaches and instructional conditions for their students. The volume is guest-edited by Xiaohong Wen, Professor in Applied Linguistics and Chinese language Acquisition at the University of Houston.

Podem dir que la variació lingüística resulta de captar una imatge estàtica de la llengua però projectada en el contínuum tetradimensional espai-temps. Per la seva pròpia naturalesa, la variació, doncs, només pot ser estudiada des d’un punt de vista integracional i tenint en compte la dimensió temporal. Boka inneholder artikler innenfor språkdidaktikk, litteraturdidaktikk og skrivedidaktikk og har empiri fra alle nivå i utdanningssystemet i Norge, Sverige, Danmark og Finland. Antologien speiler også at morsmålsfaget er i stadig bevegelse, og nye disipliner kommer til. Derfor har vi for eksempel med bidrag som digital skriving i sosiolingvistisk perspektiv, sanglyrikk som multimodalt uttrykk og pedagogisk transspråking. Antologien har blitt til i etterkant av en nordisk konferanse om morsmålsdidaktikk ved NTNU, Trondheim, i 2019. Konferansekomiteen var den samme som redaksjonen for denne antologien.     Description: Die Methoden zum Auffinden linguistischer Einheiten sind in den letzten Jahren so wesentlich verfeinert und ergänzt worden, daß Untersuchungen ihrer im Kommunikationsakt fungierenden, distinktiven Eigenschaften auch schon auf dem dornigen Felde der prosodischen ('suprasegmentalen') Phänomene beachtenswerte Erfolge erbracht haben. Es scheint daher an der Zeit zu sein, diese Methoden auch für die sog. Akzente der serbokroatischen Schriftsprache fruchtbar zu machen und weiterzuentwickeln, um die substantielle und linguistische Struktur dieser Akzente abgesicherter beschreiben zu können.

Ziel der Analyse des terminologischen Inventars in den russischen Übertragungen der Latein-Grammatiken Bröders ist eine Charakterisierung des Entwicklungsstandes der russischen grammatischen Terminologie in der 1. Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.

    Description: This is a study in contrastive typology with reference to German and Chinese nouns and noun constructions. The comparison proceeds from the differences displayed by the two languages in connection with numeralization (combination of noun and numeral). In the framework of the apprehension dimension of the UNITYP approach, an attempt is first made to characterize the two languages as two different types, i.e. with numeral classification on the one hand as opposed to agreement in gender and number on the other. On this basis the numeratives and numerative constructions of the two languages are then described and compared from various perspectives. The numeratives are listed in relatively exhaustive catalogues and compared and contrasted in terms of word explanations and areas of use. The study is of interest for research into language typology and universals, as well as for practical language acquisition.

    Description: Why is the Isle of Dogs in the Thames called Isle of Dogs? Did King Canute’s men bring English usage back to Jutland? How can we find out where English speakers suck their breath in to give a short response? And what did the Brontës do about dialect and think about foreign languages? The answers are in this collection of empirical work on English past and present in honour of Nils-Lennart Johannesson, Professor of English Language at Stockholm University. The first five chapters report individual studies forming an overview of current issues in the study of Old and Middle English phonology, lexis and syntax. The next six look at Early Modern and Modern English from a historical point of view, using data from corpora, manuscript archives, and fiction. Two more look at the Old English scholar JRR Tolkien and his work. The remaining chapters discuss aspects of Modern English. Several use corpora to look at English usage in itself or in relation to Swedish, French, or Norwegian. The last three look at grammatical models, the pragmatics of second language use, and modern English semantics.

    Description: The monograph deals with the musical practice of bell chiming, which is part of folk music tradition in Slovenia, as well as in some other European countries. Bell chiming is the rhythmic chiming of church bells, which is nowadays a fairly popular musical practice among the older and younger generations alike. The book is based on modern research and, where appropriate, comparatively approaches the material from a historical and geographical point of view. Apart from its musical analyses, which present structural and formational elements of bell-chiming tunes in detail, the book also discusses sociological questions, such as the role of bell chiming in the clerical and also in the secular context, the manner of musical transfer, the performativity of musical practice and the roles of the sexes in bell chiming. Bell chiming is placed within the broader context of European chiming. The detailed discussion of bell chiming in both Germany and Croatia refutes the old myth of bell chiming as a Slovenian national speciality.
    Description: Knjiga obravnava glasbeno prakso pritrkavanja, ki je del ljudske glasbene tradicije v Sloveniji in nekaterih evropskih državah. Gre za ritmično izvajanje na cerkvene zvonove, ki je danes izredno razširjena glasbena praksa tako med starejšimi kot mlajšimi generacijami. Knjiga je zasnovana na sodobnih raziskavah in je na primernih mestih komparativno obravnavana z zgodovinskega in geografskega stališča. Poleg glasbenoanalitičnega dela, v katerem so podrobno predstavljeni strukturni in oblikovni elementi pritrkovalskih viž, knjiga obravnava sociološka vprašanja kot so: vloga pritrkavanja v cerkvenem in posvetnem kontekstu, načini glasbenega prenosa, performativnost glasbene prakse in vloga spola pri pritrkavanju. Pritrkavanje je umeščeno v širši kontekst evropske igre na zvonove, s podrobnejšo obravnavo pritrkavanja v Nemčiji in na Hrvaškem pa je ovržen v Sloveniji že zelo dobro »zasidran« mit o pritrkavanju kot slovenski nacionalni posebnosti.

    Description: This chapter highlights the relevance of text categorisation for research in legal translation by focusing on institutional translation settings, namely: the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), and their corresponding adjudicative bodies.1 After briefly reviewing recurrent issues and models of legal text classification (section 2), a multidimensional approach is applied to the multilingual text production of the three representative institutional translation settings during three years over the span of a decade (2005, 2010 and 2015), as part of the project “Legal Translation in International Institutional Settings: Scope, Strategies and Quality Markers” (LETRINT) (section 3). The resulting subdivisions are integrated into a categorisation matrix and discussed as a way of illustrating the relative nature and implications of text classifications. The fine-grained description of corpus design and representativeness, technical aspects of corpus compilation and full taxonomies of genres are not addressed in this chapter.

    Description: N.M. Karamzin's "Pis'ma russkogo putešestvennika" (hereinafter PRP) occupy a special place in the history of Russian language and literature. Since their publication as a continuation novel in "Moskovskiy Žurnal" from 1791-1792 (in the following MŽ 1) they are considered both the first realization of the "novyj slog" (new language / new style) as well as the beginning of Russian sentimentalism. Both assumptions are controversial. The present work should contribute to the clarification of contentious questions by providing a detailed description of the syntactic facts in the main work of Karamzin for the first time.

    Description: The present study is a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the system of long and short adjectives in Old Russian, a profound language change to which very little previous research has been devoted. It is generally assumed that in prehistoric Slavic, the system was purely grammatical with the long form denoting definiteness and the short form denoting indefiniteness. The present study finds, on the basis of evidence collected from Old Russian chronicle texts, that even the earliest of these sources display a substantially transformed system no longer reflecting the opposition between definiteness and indefiniteness, but governed by parameters of information structure.

    Description: Simplified Signs presents a system of manual sign communication intended for special populations who have had limited success mastering spoken or full sign languages. It is the culmination of over twenty years of research and development by the authors. The Simplified Sign System has been developed and tested for ease of sign comprehension, memorization, and formation by limiting the complexity of the motor skills required to form each sign, and by ensuring that each sign visually resembles the meaning it conveys.Volume 1 outlines the research underpinning and informing the project, and places the Simplified Sign System in a wider context of sign usage, historically and by different populations. Volume 2 presents the lexicon of signs, totalling approximately 1000 signs, each with a clear illustration and a written description of how the sign is formed, as well as a memory aid that connects the sign visually to the meaning that it conveys. While the Simplified Sign System originally was developed to meet the needs of persons with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, or aphasia, it may also assist the communication needs of a wider audience – such as healthcare professionals, aid workers, military personnel , travellers or parents, and children who have not yet mastered spoken language. The system also has been shown to enhance learning for individuals studying a foreign language. Lucid and comprehensive, this work constitutes a valuable resource that will enhance the communicative interactions of many different people, and will be of great interest to researchers and educators alike.

    Description: The monograph examines the Spanish conditional (cantaría) with respect to the English conditional (would) and the Czech conditional (zpíval bych). The text presents a classification of all the uses of this verb form based on cognitive grammar and Langacker’s notion of ground. The classification is based on extensive authentic material obtained from parallel and monolingual corpora. The analysis takes into account the modal, temporal and evidential characteristics of the conditional. The conditional meaning is dependent on the existence of a secondary ground, which is defined as the default feature.
