    Description: Autor v německy psané studii klade otázku, co se odehrálo v kruhu Ježíšových přívrženců po Ježíšově ukřižování. Víme, že učedníci Ježíše po jeho zatčení opustili, s největší pravděpodobností odešli zpět do Galileje. Je obecně známou skutečností, že v Jeruzalémě vznikl záhy okruh Ježíšových přívrženců, v němž získal přední postavení Ježíšův rodný bratr Jakub. K tomuto kruhu se posléze připojila z Galileje se navrátivší skupina apokalyptického radikalismu nejbližších Ježíšových učedníků. Odlišného zaměření byla v Jeruzalémě skupina kolem Štěpána. Samostatnou kapitolu tvoří Pavlovo pochopení Ježíšova kříže a vzkříšení, zachycené v Pavlově formuli víry, I. Korintským 15,1-3. Mezi Jakubem a Pavlem došlo posléze k tvrdému sporu o otázku, zda křesťané nežidovského původu jsou povinni dodržovat ustanovení židovského zákona. Kardinální otázka ovšem zní, co se odehrálo v prvních dnech, týdnech, bezprostředně po Ježíšově ukřižování? Autor vyslovuje argumentovanou hypotézu, že zvolání „maranata“ v galilejském kruhu apokalyptických radikálů z Ježíšova nejbližšího okruhu, bylo onou první jiskrou, která dala do pohybu proces vznikání křesťanské víry. Tuto hypotézu argumentuje řadou odkazů, že zvolání bylo známo již v Kumránu, odkud je doloženo v Didaché. To znamená, že nikoli víra ve vzkříšení dala vzniknout očekávání Ježíšova příchodu, návratu, parusie, nýbrž vizionářské očekávání parusie, provázené zvoláním maranata, dalo vzniknout víře ve vzkříšení. V této nejstarší vrstvě nelze ještě označit očekávání parusie jako očekávání druhého Kristova příchodu. Tam očekávání posouvá až Pavel, pro kterého již Ježíšův kříž byl vykupitelským dějstvím poslaného božího Syna. Mottem Fundovy knihy Ježíš a mýtus o Kristu (Praha, Karolinum 2007, 366 stran) je Popperova věta, že i velmi smělé hypotézy, které se nepotvrdily, poponášejí dopředu naše poznání.

    Description: This book traces the dynamics of military-technological innovation in Russia over the last hundred and fifty years, particularly focusing on three distinct periods: the introduction of rifled breech-loading weapons in Imperial Russia in the nineteenth century, the invention of nuclear weapons in the Soviet Union in the twentieth century, and the development of precision-guided weapons in post-Soviet Russia in the twenty-first century. The analysis relies extensively on primary data obtained from Russian archives, complemented by a series of expert interviews, and deciphers Russia’s distinct strategic cultural approach to military-technological innovation. Anzhelika Solovyeva is an assistant professor at the Department of Security Studies, Institute of Political Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University. Besides Karolinum Press, her publications have appeared in Oxford University Press, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Rowman & Littlefield, as well as Scopus Q1-ranked journals and journals with an impact factor (IF).

    Description: The technique known as contemporary stylometry uses different methods, including machine learning, to discover a poem’s author based on features like the frequencies of words and character n-grams. However, there is one potential textual fingerprint stylometry tends to ignore: versification, or the very making of language into verse. Using poetic texts in three different languages (Czech, German, and Spanish), Petr Plecháč asks whether versification features like rhythm patterns and types of rhyme can help determine authorship. He then tests its findings on two unsolved literary mysteries. In the first, Plecháč distinguishes the parts of the Elizabethan verse play The Two Noble Kinsmen written by William Shakespeare from those written by his coauthor, John Fletcher. In the second, he seeks to solve a case of suspected forgery: how authentic was a group of poems first published as the work of the nineteenth-century Russian author Gavriil Stepanovich Batenkov? This book of poetic investigation should appeal to literary sleuths the world over.

    Description: Kniha Mezi Markem Marci a Löwem z Erlsfeldu je prvním monografickým pojednáním o obsahu výuky na pražské lékařské fakultě v době barokní; titul odkazuje ke dvěma významným českým profesorům medicíny té doby. Výklad je chronologicky rámován obnovením lékařské fakulty po bitvě na Bílé hoře a počátkem vlády císařovny Marie Terezie (1740). Čtenář se nejprve dozví, co a z jakých učebnic se v pobělohorské době v Praze studovalo, včetně širšího kontextu dobové medicíny ve srovnání s fakultami v cizině. Dále se studie detailněji zaměřila na některé aspekty lékařských teorií v díle Jana Marka Marci z Kronlandu, např. na historii počátků středoevropského očkování proti neštovicím. Součástí pojednání je i podrobný rozbor prolínání lékařských teorií s dobovou filozofií. Nechybí ani popis postupného šíření objevu krevního oběhu ve středoevropské lékařské literatuře, na němž lze dobře pozorovat, jak se v baroku medicína postupně modernizovala. Práce rehabilituje baroko tradičně vykládané jako doba „temna“, neboť ukazuje, jak se lékařská učenost onoho období v Praze originálně rozvíjela a jak vzkvétala.

    Description: This book presents an original historical source, entitled “An erudite and true narration of some changes that recently took place in the Grand Duchy of Moscow,” written by the Swedish ambassador to the court in Moscow and first printed in Stockholm in 1608. In his diplomatic report, the author vividly describes the political crisis in the Moscow empire, the tragic events of the Time of Troubles and the plots surrounding the successorship to the tsarist throne which he witnessed. He also depicts events that preceded these events, interpreting them in accordance with the territorial and confessional integrity of the Swedish Kingdom. In addition to the translation of the Swedish original into Czech, the book also contains a philological and historiographical essay, which sets the author’s work into the context of Swedish literature and political context at the turn of the 16th century. Thanks to its wide range of interpretive possibilities, the text is suitable material for students of philological and historical disciplines.

    Description: Kniha českému čtenáři zprostředkovává původní historický pramen „Učené a pravdivé vyprávění o některých změnách, jež se v nedávných letech udály v Moskevském velkoknížectví“, napsaný švédským vyslancem na moskevském dvoře a poprvé vydaný tiskem ve Stockholmu roku 1608. Autor ve své diplomatické zprávě barvitě líčí politickou krizi v moskevské říši, tragické události smuty a intriky kolem následnictví na carském trůnu, jejichž očitým svědkem se stal. Popisuje také předcházející události, jež interpretuje v souladu s územní i konfesní politikou Švédského království. Kniha vedle překladu švédského originálu do češtiny obsahuje též doprovodnou filologickou a historiografickou studii, zasazující autorovo dílo do kontextu švédské literatury i politických souvislostí na přelomu 16. a 17. století. Díky širokým interpretačním možnostem představuje vhodný materiál pro studium filologických i historických oborů.

However, if we are to grow, we should relax the relationship to ourselves. Hence the notion of resignation. A resigned will is not weak, it is able to resist itself and others. Such resignation is a man’s defense against becoming a mere element in a sequence of events. Art, philosophy, and mainly freedom all lie in the ability to create distance. Máme-li ale skutečně růst, je naopak třeba rozvolnit vztah k sobě samému. Sem vstupuje pojem rezignace. Rezignovaná vůle není slabá, umí sama sobě – a potažmo i druhým – odolávat. Taková rezignace je obranou před tím, že se člověk stane pouhým článkem v řadě událostí či dějů. Umění, filosofie, ale především svoboda tkví ve schopnosti vytvářet distanci. Tereza Matějčková ve své nejnovější knize nabízí víc než dějiny pojmu nebo tematické čtení odkazu známých myslitelů – svěží pohled na nově položenou otázku po sebepřijetí a růstu.

And it may be the reason postwar philosophical texts are so difficult to understand, since they confront incomprehensibly traumatic experiences. In this first English-language translation of any of his books, Miroslav Petříček—one of the most influential and erudite Czech philosophers, and a student of Jan Patočka—argues that to exist in the second half of the twentieth century and beyond, Western philosophy has had to rewrite its tradition and its discourse, radically transforming itself. Should philosophy be capable of bearing witness to the time, Petříček contends, this metamorphosis in philosophy is necessary. Přestože počet univerzit, studentů a učitelů za posledních třicet let obrovsky vzrostl, panuje zde strach a nejistota a je na tyto instituce vyvíjen tlak. Univerzity jsou odděleny od svého společenského a politického okolí, což vytváří atmosféru vzájemné nedůvěry. Zároveň to vede k zavádění nevhodných kontrolních opatření, jako je metrické hodnocení. Publikace se zabývá otázkami týkajícími se těchto problémů, tematizuje sebeutvářející se charakter univerzity (tzv. autopoiesis) a zahrnuje několik podrobných případových studií.

    Description: The last thirty years have seen a significant increase in the number of universities, instructors, and students alike, yet institutions of higher education currently face a number of problems and are plagued with uncertainty, pressure, and fear. Their status as ivory towers detached from the social and political environments of contemporary democracies creates an atmosphere of mutual distrust. This then leads to the imposition of regulatory measures incongruent with the workings of universities, which only deepens the prevailing issues. The essays in this publication explore these issues, focus on the self-constituting character of the university (the so-called autopoiesis) and present several detailed case studies.
