    Description: Franz Rosenzweig ist bei uns - bedingt durch die nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung - immer noch ein weitgehend Unbekannter. Dabei hatte er allein schon mit seinem zweibändigen Werk "Hegel und der Staat" (1920) wesentlich zur Neubelebung der gesellschafts- und geschichtsphilosophischen Diskussion beigetragen. Umwälzender ist jedoch der existenzphilosophische Neuansatz, den Rosenzweig mit seinem Hauptwerk "Der Stern der Erlösung" (1921) vorlegte. Es ist dies nicht nur eines der bedeutenden theologischen Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Herausforderung - wenn auch verspätet - von den christlichen Kirchen heute mehr und mehr erkannt und aufgenommen wird, sondern das ihm zugrunde liegende Neue Denken ist auch in fundamentaltheologischer Hinsicht von einschneidender Bedeutung. An der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Deutschen Idealismus gereift, wirft Rosenzweig die grundlegenden Fragen nach der negativen Begrenztheit unseres Denkens, dem existentiellen Grund unseres Daseins, nach dessen Zeitlichkeit und Sprachlichkeit sowie nach dem Anderen und dem Wir der Gemeinschaft auf - Fragen, die auch heute noch die philosophische Gegenwartsdiskussion bestimmen. Den vorliegenden Studien geht es um eine einführende Vergegenwärtigung der Existenzphilosophie Rosenzweigs von unterschiedlichen Aspekten her. sie versuchen sich dem Neuen Denken Rosenzweigs vor allem vom Entstehungskontext aus den Gesprächen mit den Freunden - Hans Ehrenberg, Eugen Rosenstock, Martin Buber - zu nähern. ihr Ziel ist jedoch kein philosophiegeschichtliches, sondern die Vermittlung der existentiellen Fragen Rosenzweigs an uns.

Während erste Ansätze zu einer Aufbereitung der Entstehungsgeschichte bereits vorliegen (Höfflin-Grether 2021), veranschaulicht die vorliegende Ausgabe die Komplexität der Entstehung in vollem Umfang; faksimiliert die Handschriften, die sich großteils im Schnitzler-Nachlass an der Cambridge University Library befinden, versieht sie mit einer Umschrift und ediert die Typoskripte. Der Band zeichnet zudem die Druckgeschichte nach und bietet Lesetexte der Novelle und des Dramas nach dem Erstdruck bzw. der Erstausgabe. Versehen werden die Texte mit Kommentaren zu kulturhistorischen Kontexten, Austriazismen und veralteten, zum Teil fremdsprachlichen Ausdrücken.     Description: Das Buch bringt aus dem Nachlass Josef Königs die Texte dreier akademischer Vorträge von 1937, 1952 und 1958 sowie eine umfangreiche Vortragsgrundlage zur philosophischen Situation 1934 in Deutschland mit Blick auf Heidegger, Jaspers und Klages. Diese Arbeit zur Lage der Philosophie und insbesondere zur allgemeinen Bestimmung der Existenzphilosophie ergänzt und erweitert Königs Darlegungen zur „offenen Unbestimmtheit“ des Heideggerschen Existenzbegriffs, die aus dem Nachlass im Dilthey-Jahrbuch 1990/1991 erschienen sind. Intensive Beispieldiskussionen und Einzelanalysen gelten vor allem den Prinzipien der Existenzphilosophie und der Struktur ihrer leitenden Begriffe. Im Vortrag „Bemerkungen zur Metapher“ (1937) entfaltet König den Gedanken, dass diejenige metaphorische Rede, die nicht ein im Prinzip ersetzbares Additum zur nicht-metaphorischen ist, eine wesentliche Möglichkeit der menschlichen Sprache darstellt. Sie kommt zwar zur nicht-metaphorischen Rede hinzu, aber wesentlich hinzu und konstituiert dadurch das Einssein der Sprache. Der zweistündige Vortrag „Verantwortung in der Wissenschaft“ (1952) erörtert den Begriff von Wissenschaft in Verbindung mit dem eines wissenschaftlichen Gewissens, das „anschaffbar“ ist, und legt die Eigenart der sittlichen Natur des wissenschaftlichen Wissens dar. Im Vortrag „Probleme des Begriffs Entwicklung“ (1958) geht König der Frage nach, wie prinzipiell begriffen werden kann, dass ein Wesen, das abstammt von Wesen, denen lediglich äußere Wahrnehmung zugeschrieben werden kann, zu einem Wesen werden kann, das auch innere Wahrnehmung besitzt.

Antworten auf diese Fragen gibt die Briefsammlung des Amtsträgers Ludovico Foscarini (1409–1480). Seine Briefe entstanden als Reaktion auf ein Dilemma: Nur als Statthalter und Gesandter konnte Foscarini in der Konkurrenz mit anderen venezianischen Adeligen bestehen. In der Peripherie war er aber von den Verteilungswettkämpfen abgeschnitten, die in der Zentrale in geheimen Abstimmungen abliefen. Kunstvolle Briefe an andere Politiker und politisch einflussreiche Intellektuelle sollten das Problem lösen. Diese Briefe nutzten humanistische, juristische und theologische Metaphern, um Themen anzusprechen, die außerhalb der offiziellen Gremien tabu waren. Foscarini legte eine didaktisch aufgebaute Briefsammlung mit den wirksamsten seiner Briefe an –　ein Erfahrungsschatz, den er seinen Söhnen für ihre politischen Laufbahnen hinterließ. Die Publikation kontextualisiert in einer interdisziplinär angelegten Analyse die Einzelbriefe anhand von gelehrten Textvorlagen und Wissensbeständen sowie Archivmaterial.     Description: Der Band versammelt Untersuchungen zur Sprachwirklichkeit, die den bisherigen theoretischen Primat der Sprache als eines bloßen Zeichen-, und Repräsentations- und Bedeutungssystems aufsprengen. Um diesseits solcher Vorstellungsmetaphysik einen ursprünglicheren Manifestationsort des Sprechens als Ausdruck auszumachen, erscheinen neben Beiträgen aus der Philosophie Arbeiten aus Literatur- und Theaterwissenschaft und aus der Theologie und politischer Rhetorik. Die bisher kaum berücksichtigte Diskussion hinsichtlich einer Phänomenologie des Pathos will die Wurzeln der Sprachrealität in ihrer ursprünglichsten Selbstgebung von Affekt und Gefühl aufsuchen, worin die Grenzen rein linguistischer Beobachtungen und Theorien überschritten werden. Der Kern dieser Untersuchungen geht auf ein internationales Forschungsseminar am Institut für Philosophie der Universität Wien zurück.

Der Autor unternimmt im vorliegenden Werk eine kleistsche 'Reise um die Welt' entlang der Denkwege bedeutender Autoren der existenzphilosophischen Phänomenologie: Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre und Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Es gelingt ihm zu zeigen, dass die Problematik des Anderen in der Reflexion bei den besprochenen Autoren eine sich stetig vertiefende Umformung erfährt, die es ermöglicht, den Anderen und die Reflexion als Analogien einer tiefer liegenden Problematik zu begreifen. Die Reflexion erweist sich dabei letztlich nicht als Zerstörer einer alltäglich immer funktionierenden Unmittelbarkeit, sondern als Wegweiser in die Tiefen dessen, was wir Existenz nennen. Das Problem des Anderen wird hierbei nicht 'gelöst', es bedarf auch gar keiner Auflösung, wenn man begreift, dass die Unzugänglichkeit des Anderen nur die Kehrseite der Unzugänglichkeit des eigenen Selbst ist. Der Andere ist letztlich nicht mehr und nicht weniger rätselhaft als ich selbst es bin, und gerade in dieser Dunkelheit liegt das Wesen der Existenz.

    Description: Spätestens seit Aristoteles befaßt sich die Philosophie damit, wie praktisches Wissen beschaffen sein muß, damit Menschen unter der Bedingung je singulärer Weltzustände erfolgreich handeln können. In seinem Buch entwickelt Andreas Niederberger eine Antwort auf diese Frage, die an die Beschäftigung mit dem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Kontingenz und Vernunft in der Bedeutungs- und Handlungstheorie anschließt. Zunächst wird dazu kritisch der gegenwärtige Kontingenz-Diskurs gesichtet und im Anschluß an Gadamer und Derrida einerseits sowie Aristoteles andererseits ein vernunfttheoretischer Strukturbegriff der Kontingenz bestimmt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns von Habermas als Theorie einer Bewältigung der Kontingenz von Handlungsumständen mit Hilfe von sprachlicher Interaktion bzw. der Revision von Wissen rekonstruiert. Dabei zeigen sich jedoch Schwierigkeiten, die Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns als plausible Handlungstheorie zu begreifen. Niederberger weist nach, daß eine Behebung dieser Schwierigkeiten unter Rekurs auf die Schriften Maurice Merleau-Pontys möglich ist. Allerdings werfen auch diese Ansätze ihrerseits Rückfragen hinsichtlich der Vernünftigkeit erfolgreichen Handlungswissens auf. Als systematischer Ertrag des Buches ergibt sich eine revidierte Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns, in der das Vernunftproblem explizit adressiert wird. In einem Schlußkapitel wird dieser Ertrag hinsichtlich seiner Relevanz für weitere Fragestellungen der Handlungstheorie, der Gesellschaftstheorie und der politischen Philosophie erörtert.

    Description: Im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches steht sowohl die methodologische Grundlegung der Bewusstseinsforschung als auch die Untersuchung essentieller Bewusstseinsstrukturen. Nicht nur die zunehmende Erforschung und Interpretation des Bewusstseins in den Neurowissenschaften läßt die Frage nach einer gerechtfertigten Methodologie der Bewußtseinsforschung besonders virulent erscheinen, sondern auch die Entwicklungen in der Kognitionspsychologie, künstlichen Intelligenzforschung und der Philosophie des Geistes. So werden zunächst einige Formen des Physikalismus analysiert, die in der zeitgenössischen Philosophie des Geistes von Bedeutung sind. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit erfahren diese eher allgemeinen physikalistischen Bestimmungen des Bewusstseins aufgrund von Dennetts materialistisch-funktionalistischer Bewusstseinstheorie eine weitere Konkretisierung. Nach Dennett ist Bewusstseinsforschung nur aus der Dritten-Person-Perspektive durchführbar. Daran anschließend wird untersucht, ob Husserls Phänomenologie nicht zumindest im Prinzip zu leisten vermag, was Dennett für unmöglich hält, nämlich die Erforschung des Bewusstseins aus der Ersten-Person-Perspektive. So hat Husserl in vielfältigen Studien aufzuzeigen versucht, daß ein methodisch-reflexiv gerechtfertigter Zugang zum Bewusstsein konsistent durchführbar ist. Die Intentionalität und Zeitlichkeit des Bewusstseins spielen diesbezüglich ebenfalls eine wesentliche Rolle. Abschließend wird erläutert, welche Implikationen die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit für die Bewusstseinsforschung und ontologische Bestimmung des Bewußtseins haben.

Der Mensch ist damit stetige Stellungnahme in und zu einer weltlichen Struktur, die sich im Akt der Stellungnahme erst bestätigt findet und weiterwebt. Dadurch werden Selbst- sowie Weltverhältnis begründet. Den Menschen in diesem Sinne als 'in die Welt engagiert' zu verstehen, bedeutet, seine Existenz auf der Grundlage eines ontologisch fundierten Austauschgeschehens zu betrachten. Bewegung und Freiheit (Bergson), Intentionalität (Husserl), Existenz und Situation (Sartre) sowie Verhalten und Leiblichkeit bieten phänomenologische Ansatzpunkte, die auf eine letztlich ontologisch zu verstehende Verwobenheit menschlicher und weltlicher Strukturen schließen lassen (Merleau-Ponty). Dadurch zeigt sich das Engagement zunächst als Phänomen des Zur-Welt-seins und schließlich als Zur-Welt-sein selbst. Das Gesamtbild zeigt, dass das Konzept des Engagements sich ideengeschichtlich als roter Faden durch die behandelten Philosophien zieht.

Vielmehr steht sie in einer produktiven Beziehung zu zentralen geschichtsphilosophischen, politischen und medienästhetischen Fragen der Zeit. Die vorliegende Studie geht den Zusammenhängen zwischen Engelsfigur und Moderne-Diskurs entlang eines Spannungsbogens nach, der von Reflexionen eines metaphysischen Exils Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts über die Zuspitzung existentieller Bedrohung im Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zum Undarstellbarkeitstopos des Holocaust verläuft. Dabei wird deutlich, dass der Engel auf vielfache Weise als Verursacher und gleichzeitig als zukunftsgerichteter Überwinder moderner Formen des Exils auftritt – als Figur, die geschichtsphilosophische Brüche herbeiführt und individualbiographische Traumata sichtbar macht; die die moderne Deformation des Menschen illustriert und wahlweise zu heilen oder voranzutreiben versucht; und die schließlich neue politische Ordnungen entwirft und sie als ästhetische Metalepse bereits in der Exilgegenwart veranschaulicht.

Sie bot einen stabilen Rahmen für die Ost-West-Entspannung und entfaltete zugleich enorme gesellschaftliche Wirkungen, da sich zahlreiche Bürger Osteuropas auf die Bestimmungen von Helsinki beriefen, um insbesondere die Einhaltung der Menschenrechte einzufordern. Ohne den KSZE-Prozess wäre ein friedlicher Wandel in Europa schwer möglich gewesen. Die Autoren widmen sich gleichermaßen dem politisch-diplomatischen Entscheidungsprozess einzelner Teilnehmerstaaten wie den diversen Oppositionsbewegungen im Osten und zeichnen so ein differenziertes Bild dieser schleichenden, aber schließlich grundstürzenden Veränderungen.

    Description: Diese literaturgeschichtliche Arbeit führt erstmals auf breiter Quellenbasis den empirischen Nachweis, dass Leser/-innen beim außerwissenschaftlichen Umgang mit Literatur in Geschichte und Gegenwart Applikationen vornehmen. Es wird gezeigt, welche Formen eine solche Applikation annehmen kann, und dass es sich um eine relevante Praktik handelt. Unter ‚Applikation‘ ist eine Tätigkeit im Rahmen des Rezeptionsprozesses zu verstehen, bei welcher Leser/-innen das Gelesene auf ihre persönlichen oder lebensweltlichen Erfahrungen, Überzeugungen und Einstellungen beziehen. Das Ergebnis dieser Bezugnahme, welches ebenfalls ‚Applikation‘ heißt, kann sein, dass sie neue Überzeugungen und Einstellungen bilden, bestehende verändern oder verwerfen. Um Existenz, Beschaffenheit und Relevanz des Phänomens zu belegen, wurde eine Fülle an Rezeptionsdokumenten ausgewertet. Sie geben Auskunft über die Erstrezeption von neun Romanen aus vier Jahrhunderten, die das literarische Korpus der Arbeit bilden, darunter Goethes Werther, Manns Buddenbrooks und Schlinks Der Vorleser. Die Arbeit beleuchtet eine wichtige, in der bisherigen rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Forschung nicht hinreichend beachtete Praktik des außerwissenschaftlichen Umgangs mit Literatur.
