    Description: Russian-language edition: In Russia and America a perceived absence of literature gave rise to grandiose notions of literature's importance. This book examines how two traditions worked to refigure cultural lack, not by disputing it but by insisting on it, by representing the nation's (putative) cultural deficit as a moral and aesthetic advantage. Through a comparative study of Gogol and Hawthorne, this book examines parallels that seem particularly striking when we consider that these traditions had virtually no points of contact. Yet the unexpected parallels between these authors are the result of historical similarities: Russians and Americans felt obliged to develop a manifestly national literature ex nihilo, and to do so in an age when an unprecedented diversity of printed texts were circulating among an ever more heterogeneous reading public. Responding to these conditions, Gogol and Hawthorne articulated ideas that would prove influential for their nations' literary development: that is, despite the culture's thinness and deviation from European norms, it would soon produce works that would surpass European literature in significance.

    Description: Les conflits en France entre 1500 et 1800, qui résultent entre autres de bouleversements confessionnels (les guerres de Religion), politiques (la monarchie absolue) ou concernant l'histoire des idées (les Lumières), font naître un vaste panorama de poèmes épiques aux sujets mythiques, historiques, bibliques ou scientifiques. Depuis les premiers essais épiques au temps des guerres d'Italie jusqu'aux Colombiades au XVIIIe siècle, la dimension de la guerre, qui se veut une constante dans la tradition du genre depuis Homère, ainsi que celle de la paix, liée à la vision d'un âge d'or chez Virgile, sont représentées et évaluées de manière variée et polyvalente. Ces variations dépendent du modèle épique choisi, des considérations poétologiques ainsi que de l'arrière-plan socioculturel auquel les poètes appartiennent. Elles concernent tant la représentation de la violence sur les champs de bataille que la conception et la modélisation du héros épique. Au sein d'un genre fortement codifié émergent donc de multiples essais qui conçoivent de nouveaux regards sur la guerre et la paix tout en les intégrant dans le répertoire de la tradition épique.

    Description: Monique Saint-Hélier became quite successful during the 1930s in particular because of the violent controversy that surrounded her second novel, Bois-Mort. How is it that Saint-Hélier’s work provoked such passionate criticism, but encountered nothing but disinterest after the war? Studying unpublished sources as well as a vast corpus of book reviews, the author explores by this quite particular literary path, as well as the variations in how a work is received over time.
    Description: Monique Saint-Hélier (1895-1955) connaît le succès dans les années trente en France, grâce notamment à la violente polémique que suscite son deuxième roman, Bois-Mort (1934). Pourtant, dès les années cinquante, la romancière disparaît durablement de l’histoire littéraire française. Pourquoi les romans de Monique Saint-Hélier déchaînent-ils les passions critiques, puis ne rencontrent-ils plus que le désintérêt après la Seconde Guerre mondiale? Comment expliquer le silence éditorial de près de vingt ans qui sépare la publication des ouvrages des années trente de ceux des années cinquante, alors même que ces romans appartiennent à un même ensemble narratif? Fondée sur des sources inédites et un vaste corpus de comptes rendus, l’étude de la réception critique de l’œuvre de Monique Saint-Hélier en France apporte des réponses aux nombreuses questions soulevées par cette trajectoire particulière. Malgré toute sa singularité, ce parcours permet également une réflexion plus générale sur les variations de la réception d'une œuvre à des époques différentes.

    Description: Au XIXe siècle, la caricature connaît un essor sans précédent en France et les écrivains s’intéressent de près à ce phénomène médiatique qui est à mettre en lien avec l’émergence du réalisme littéraire.
