    Description: Fritz Bauer ist als der Staatsanwalt in die Geschichte der Bundesrepublik eingegangen, der den Auschwitz- Prozess initiiert und in einer Vielzahl weiterer Fälle die Verfolgung von NS-Verbrechen in die Wege geleitet hat. In Büchern, Aufsätzen, Zeitungsartikeln, Interviews und Reden in Hörfunk und Fernsehen reflektierte er die gesellschaftliche und politische Lage der Bundesrepublik in der Nachkriegszeit. Daneben formulierte er ein kriminalpolitisches Programm, in dem er Ziel und Zweck des Strafrechts grundlegend infrage stellte. Bauer hat in diesen Schriften oft Positionen bezogen, die für seine Zeit ungewöhnlich waren; zugleich zeigen sie, wie eng er dem Denken seiner Zeit verbunden war. Sie gewähren Einsicht in Diskussionen der frühen Bundesrepublik und führen eindrucksvoll vor Augen, wie sich Bauer als Jurist, Remigrant, jüdischer Intellektueller und Sozialdemokrat einmischte und Gehör verschaffte. So eröffnen seine »Kleinen Schriften« aus heute meist unzugänglichen Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, den Blick auf die Brüche in Bauers Biografie, auf Exil und Remigration als Schlüsselerfahrungen. Fritz Bauer (1903–1968) war eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten im Kampf für die juristische Ahndung der NS-Verbrechen in den 1950er- und 1960er-Jahren in der Bundesrepublik. Von den Nationalsozialisten ins Exil getrieben, kehrte Bauer 1949 nach West-Deutschland zurück und setzte sich als hessischer Generalstaatsanwalt für die Demokratisierung des Landes ein. Kaum etwas weiß man von seinem ungewöhnlichen Werdegang. Aus einer assimilierten jüdischen Danziger Kaufmannsfamilie stammend, war er als junger Mann als Journalist und Zeitungsunternehmer in Berlin erfolgreich. In der Peripherie war er aber von den Verteilungswettkämpfen abgeschnitten, die in der Zentrale in geheimen Abstimmungen abliefen. Kunstvolle Briefe an andere Politiker und politisch einflussreiche Intellektuelle sollten das Problem lösen. Diese Briefe nutzten humanistische, juristische und theologische Metaphern, um Themen anzusprechen, die außerhalb der offiziellen Gremien tabu waren. Foscarini legte eine didaktisch aufgebaute Briefsammlung mit den wirksamsten seiner Briefe an –　ein Erfahrungsschatz, den er seinen Söhnen für ihre politischen Laufbahnen hinterließ.     Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

    Description: L’histoire de l’intendance hispano-américaine ne peut se faire sans l’histoire des hommes qui la gouvernent. Au-delà des données biographiques classiques, cet ouvrage se penche sur leur environnement familial, social et professionnel. Son originalité réside dans la composition du groupe étudié. Il recense l’ensemble des intendants de la vice-royauté de la Nouvelle-Espagne entre 1764 et 1821 quel que soit leur mode de nomination, qu’ils soient entrés ou non en charge. Il est le seul à étudier les intendants de cette aire géographique dans toute son intégralité territoriale (Nouvelle-Espagne, Guatemala, Louisiane, Cuba, Porto Rico, Philippines).

So hat sich um die sogenannte Histotainmentmusik ein Gesellschaftskreis gebildet, der den Gegenstand der mittelalterlichen Liedkunst neu verhandelt. Der Zugang zum Mittelalter scheint hier vor allem von emotionalen und identitätsstiftenden Aspekten geprägt zu sein. Wie aber wird das Mittelalter im populärkulturellen Gedächtnis bewahrt? Und was sagt diese Art der Mittelalterrezeption über unsere Gesellschaft aus? Diesen Fragen wird anhand Walthers von der Vogelweide "Palästinalied", einem Marktklassiker der Histotainmentmusik, nachgegangen.

    Description: Between the 16th and 19th centuries, France offered us a multifaceted mirror of marginality. Whether the approach is economic, religious, political or cultural, we are brought back to the difficult relationship with otherness constructed by a univocal model of power, an absolute monarchy or empires that married the throne and the altar, around a king or a war emperor. The aim of the contributions in this collection is to reflect on the way in which these banishments have constructed the figure of the other, the foreigner, within his own country of origin or host country, or have defined civil and civic rights that are indissolubly linked to a community of destinies, thoughts and interests. However, none of the marginalisation and suffering imposed is without resistance, without stubborn and protracted struggles for recognition, for individual and collective freedoms, for equal rights, as current events never deny.

    Description: Considéré d’habitude comme le « père » de l’anarchisme français, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon entretient un rapport ambivalent avec la création littéraire. Cet essai retrace tout d’abord la relation de Proudhon à la littérature, telle qu’elle apparaît à travers ses ouvrages. Il analyse ensuite les discours tenus dans ses quatre journaux sur les triomphes du roman-feuilleton, visant la conception d’un feuilleton révolutionnaire capable de diffuser auprès du lectorat populaire, par le biais de la fiction, les idées et les théories qui aideront à son affranchissement. Une présentation des romans-feuilletons parus dans les diverses incarnations du journal Le Peuple est suivie par une étude plus approfondie de l’un d’entre eux, le roman Le Mont Saint-Michel, qui narre les aventures d’un groupe de républicains lors du célèbre épisode de la barricade du cloître Saint-Merry, clou tragique de l’insurrection avortée de 1832. Convoquant de nombreux auteurs connus (Michelet, Stendhal, Victor Hugo et Alexandre Dumas père) et oubliés, cette analyse veut offrir une réflexion sur la nature du roman historique et de l’écriture historiographique pendant une période clef pour leur développement.

    Description: This book looks at the Hispanic monarchy in America through its ability to territorialize the spaces theoretically under its control. While the analysis confirms the central role played by the city, its novelty lies in the effort made to spatialize and contextualize the notions of territorialization and circulation. The Spanish Empire appears as an atomized urban archipelago, favoring the affirmation of original idiosyncratic poles captured through the polysemy of the term “caste”, often reduced to the global concept of “race” by historiography. On the contrary, this book demonstrates the importance of specific forms of experience in defining belonging, while highlighting the social construction of spaces revealed by the circulation of the idea of “caste”.

    Description: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du xixe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s’affirmer hors de la famille, dans l’espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d’hôpitaux et d’hospices, ou gardes-malades à domicile, ce sont les « bonnes » sœurs du xixe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des sœurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin.

Les différents textes sont extraits des communications présentées à Bordeaux du 29 au 31 octobre 2018 à l’occasion d’une manifestation commune organisée par le Comité Européen d’Histoire du Sport (CESH) et la Société Française d’Histoire du Sport (SFHS).

Du Maine à l'Anjou et à la Bretagne, si l'on peut voir beaucoup d'arbres, il n'est pas sûr que l'on puisse encore observer un vrai bocage ! Le bocage a perdu le lien qu'il avait depuis son origine avec l'activité agricole : il reste une composante du paysage rural mais il n'est plus le cadre nécessaire du travail des agriculteurs. C'est la modification la plus importante qu'il ait connu depuis sa création. Le bocage n'est pas un milieu naturel : c'est un paysage construit ; il n'est pas là de toute éternité, mais il a été fabriqué et entretenu par des générations d'agriculteurs qui avaient besoin de haies pour pratiquer à la fois la culture et le pâturage. L'objet de l'ouvrage d'Annie Antoine est de porter un regard d'historien sur le paysage bocager de l'Ouest de la France : explorer les liens forts et durables tissés entre un paysage et ses habitants, lier la construction du bocage et ses transformations à l'évolution des sociétés rurales qui, de la fin du Moyen Âge aux mutations agricoles contemporaines, l'ont utilisé et transformé.

    Description: In den deutschen Landen wurde noch das ganze 18. Jahrhundert hindurch die Wirkungsmacht von Teufel und Dämonen heftig diskutiert. Gegner der Hexenverfolgungen und Kritiker einiger Aufsehen erregender Fälle von Exorzismus führten philosophische, namentlich cartesianische, und theologische Argumente ins Feld; bei der Exegese der einschlägigen Bibelstellen wandten sie das Akkomodationsprinzip und neue kritisch-filologische Methoden an. Sie beriefen sich fast allesamt auf den niederländischen Pastor Balthasar Bekker (1634–1698), der mit seiner Betoverde Weereld (1691–1693) dem Aberglauben ein Ende setzen und die Aufklärung im Protestantismus als eine „zweite Reformation“ vorantreiben wollte. Die zahlreichen deutschen Reaktionen auf Bekker in den Jahren zwischen der ersten (1693) und der zweiten (1781–82) Verdeutschung seiner Schrift werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit erstmals detailliert analysiert, um so seinen Einfluss auf das deutsche Geistesleben sowie seine gesellschaftliche Wirkung dort zu rekonstruieren. An Bekker lässt sich zudem aufzeigen, wie nachhaltig die Niederlande im Einzelnen auf die deutsche Aufklärung einwirkten.

    Description: Dans le domaine du sport comme dans celui de l’éducation physique, la IVe République est souvent perçue comme un temps mort, sorte de parenthèse durant laquelle impuissance et immobilisme sont la règle à l’œuvre. L’historiographie qui lui est consacrée montre que les pouvoirs publics, à la fois en rupture ou héritiers des décennies précédentes, n’ont pas les moyens de concrétiser leurs ambitions et, malgré quelques avancées, les objectifs annoncés en restent bien souvent à l’état d’intention. Cette vision de l’histoire est-elle discutable ? Peut-on et doit-on continuer à penser que, sur le plan du sport comme sur celui de l’éducation physique, les années 1946-1958 ne témoignent que de progrès mineurs ? En faisant le choix d’orienter l’analyse selon l’angle de la reconstruction, cet ouvrage ambitionne de s’attaquer à cette représentation quelque peu restrictive de la période. Si la reconstruction est l’action de rebâtir quelque chose ou une nouvelle façon de se la représenter, les contributions tentent alors de situer les degrés du changement qui s’opère et montrent dans quelle mesure cette période construit en partie les fondations de l’éducation physique scolaire et du sport sur lesquelles s’appuient l’élan et l’euphorie des années 1960. Fruit des journées d’étude qui se sont déroulées à la Maison de la recherche en sciences humaines de Caen, les 16 et 17 mars 2016, cet ouvrage propose un éclairage neuf sur les idées développées et les réformes engagées en matière d’éducation physique scolaire, de sport et de loisirs. Dans le contexte délicat de reconstruction matérielle et financière au sortir de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la IVe République érige les fondations des politiques sportives et de jeunesse à venir.

    Description: Dieu au Collège de France, volume 6 of the « Passage des disciplines » series, includes texts that were presented during the symposium “Dieu at the Collège de France”, which was held in June 2021, after the delays caused by the pandemic, as part of “Passage des disciplines. Global history of the Collège de France, 19th-20th century”. This research program and the series associated with it examines the genesis of scientific and literary fields of knowledge, their mapping and their evolution during the 19th and 20th centuries, on both national and international levels, from the standpoint afforded by the history of the renewal of academic chairs at the Collège de France. “Dieu” is, to be sure, not a new 19th discipline, or a “founder of discursivity”, as Foucault called the scholars who had invented not only new discourses, but, more broadly, discursive continents, new “épistemes”. God is certainly an ancient “inventor of discursivity” and the discursive continent that he has launched is considerably more diffuse than those which come from Freud, Darwin, Einstein or Durkheim, which were the object of preceding symposia, and, for the first three ones, of the first three volumes of the series. Yet, it seemed to us possible to examine, in collaboration with Thomas Römer, holder of the chair The Hebrew Bible and its Contexts, the science of God and how the Collège de France, at different times of its history, and through this institution, the university, higher education in general, the life of ideas, made way for the sciences of religion.

Halt an einem Menschen gefunden, der ihn über sieben Jahre in allen innen- und außenpolitischen Fragen beriet und lenkte: Carl Wilhelm Saegert, Leiter der Taubstummenanstalt in Berlin und seit 1853 Inspektor des preußischen Taubstummenwesens. Als sich die Verhältnisse in Berlin nach der Revolution konsolidierten, war es für Saegert unmöglich, wegen seiner fehlenden Ausbildung und seiner bürgerlichen Herkunft in der Führungshierarchie anerkannt zu werden. Der König verließ sich aber weiterhin auf ihn nahezu blindlings, und Saegert mußte die undankbare Rolle des geheimen Beraters spielen, der nur durch die Bediententür Zugang zum König fand. – Die Edition bringt eine Auswahl der politisch relevanten Teile der Korrespondenz für die Jahre 1848–1856. Die Korrespondenz wird ergänzt durch das ungekürzte Tagebuch Saegerts für die Revolutionsmonate März bis November 1848.

    Description: L’œuvre écrite de ʿAbd al-Raʾūf al-Munāwī (m. 1622) est l’une des plus riches et des plus importantes du xie/xviie siècle en langue arabe. Il s’intéressa à toutes les sciences islamiques de son époque. À ce titre, il incarne parfaitement l’idéal d’encyclopédisme et de polygraphie que l’Égypte ottomane a hérité de son époque mamelouke. Tout en étant l’héritier de nombreux savants marqués par le soufisme, al-Munāwī a su proposer des vues en nette rupture avec le consensus. Ce faisant, il est amené à tenter une réhabilitation d’Ibn Sīnā et d’Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Būnī. Les écrits d’al-Munāwī constituent une excellente illustration de la convergence du soufisme et du Hadith qui fut amorcée durant la période mamelouke et s’amplifia au début de l’époque ottomane. Reprenant la tradition de l’herméneutique soufie du Hadith, al-Munāwī l’enrichit d’apports importants comme ceux d’al-Ġazālī et d’Ibn ʿArabī. Il donne ainsi à cette tradition une ampleur rarement égalée.

Breckling lehnte sich gegen festgefahrene gesellschaftliche Strukturen auf und wollte seine Ansichten über ein neues Menschen- und Weltbild nach Deutschland transferieren. Er wollte durch eine Reform des Menschen nicht weniger als ein ‚Paradies auf Erden‘ verbreiten. Es sollte seiner Meinung nach jedem möglich sein, seine Auffassungen auf einem offenen religiösen Marktplatz darzubieten. Dadurch half er den „Halleschen Pietismus“ mit vorzubereiten. Sein Leben und Wirken, seine Motivation und Ideen werden in einem niederländischen und einem deutschen Kontext eingeordnet. Außerdem werden die symbolischen „Netze der Bedeutung“, in denen er eingebunden war, einer näheren Untersuchung unterzogen. Die Arbeit versucht zu zeigen, dass es eine Verbindung zwischen Breckling und der niederländischen Frühaufklärung gegeben hat.

Alors que l’échec des révolutions de 1848 est général, Arnold Ruge, hégélien de gauche et député au Parlement de Francfort, exprime l’espoir d’une « seconde révolution » plus radicale que la première, celle de mars 1848, et qui fonderait une république sociale et démocratique. La formule est du socialiste français Louis Blanc, avec qui Ruge, avant sa rupture avec Marx, fut en contact à Paris en 1843-1844. Opposé au despotisme ancien, au libéralisme bourgeois et au communisme et anticipant, en citant Proudhon, sur les projets autogestionnaires du xxe siècle, Ruge propose la suppression du salariat et un coopératisme généralisé avec maintien d’un État régulateur.

Was machte ihn unsterblich? Wie und wieso erreichte der Name Egmont ein durch die Jahrhunderte hindurch vom Mittelmeerraum bis in die DDR nachhallendes Echo? In diesem Buch werden unter Einbeziehung mannigfaltiger historischer und literarischer Quellen die verschiedenen Stationen und Schattierungen des Egmont-Mythos vom Kopf an in ihrem jeweiligen Kontext beleuchtet. Auf diese Weise entwickelt der Autor ein Modell, das an ähnlich mythischen Figuren wie Masaniello, Wilhelm Tell und Jeanne d’Arc erprobt werden kann. Dieses Buch wurde 2012 im Rahmen des Programms Geisteswissenschaften International vom Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet.

Diese Studie richtet daher den Blick auf die Vielzahl der Französinnen und Franzosen, die für kurze oder längere Zeit in die sächsische Hauptstadt kamen. Anhand von zahlreichen Quellen aus deutschen und französischen Archiven werden die in Frankreich liegenden Voraussetzungen dieser Reisen, die sozialen Modalitäten und schließlich das französische Wirken am Hof und in der Stadt betrachtet. Dadurch entsteht ein facettenreiches, akteurszentriertes Bild des französisch-sächsischen Kulturtransfers.
    Description: À l’époque augustéenne (1694–1763), la ville de Dresde, résidence saxonne, devient un centre culturel du Saint-Empire. De nouveaux réseaux de personnes et de nouvelles voies commerciales mettent en place des transferts de connaissances, parmi lesquels les liens avec la France jouent un rôle prépondérant. Cette étude se penche donc sur le grand nombre de Françaises et de Français qui, à cette époque, séjournent dans la capitale saxonne pour des périodes plus ou moins longues. Les conditions préalables en France, les modalités sociales et enfin l’action française à la cour et dans la ville sont examinées à l’aide de nombreuses sources issues d’archives françaises et allemandes. Il en résulte un portrait centré sur les acteurs et à multiples facettes du transfert culturel franco-saxon.
    Description: In the Augustan era (1694–1763), the Saxon residence city of Dresden developed into a cultural centre of the Holy Roman Empire. New networks and trade routes set knowledge transfers in motion, with connections to France taking on a prominent role. This study therefore focuses on the large number of French people who came to the Saxon capital for short or long periods of time. The study includes an examination of the French prerequisites of these journeys, the social modalities and finally the French activities at court and in the city based on numerous sources from German and French archives. In this way, Christian Gründig draws a multifaceted, actor-centred picture of Franco-Saxon cultural transfer.

    Description: The Château de Gréoux-les-Bains was built in the heart of Provence on a site which had been used from early Roman times for its hot springs. The castle’s powerful outline dominates the village whose organisation and architecture has preserved evidence of its development from the Middle Ages to the modern period. In the present work, Sandrine Claude combines analysis of archival sources, selected excavation data and standing remains - making particular use of building archeology - to determine the origins and ambitions that presided over the building of a castle whose size is disproportionate to its geographical and human context. The castle’s little known history and its architectural development are thus retraced and the monument placed in its human environment, that of its commissioners and successive owners.

    Description: Cet ouvrage décrit la constitution et l’évolution du secteur de l’énergie au Cameroun. Il vise à épaissir la connaissance de ce pan de l’histoire économique et à contribuer à la recherche, dense ces dernières décennies, sur l’histoire de l’énergie et l’histoire des entreprises à travers le monde. Ce travail s’appuie sur une diversité de sources d’archives pour explorer les activités des entreprises de production et de distribution d’hydrocarbures ainsi que d’énergie électrique au Cameroun. Il suit à cet effet la trame des choix ainsi que des remises en cause de politiques économiques et énergétiques dans ce pays. L’approche diachronique privilégiée éclaire trois séquences de cette histoire. La première correspond à la période sous administration coloniale, marquée par la formation d’une économie mixte. La deuxième fait référence aux trois décennies qui suivent l’accession de ce pays à l’indépendance et qui voient s’affirmer l’étatisme. La troisième séquence couvre les débuts de la déréglementation au cours des années　1990. En suivant ces évolutions, l’ouvrage permet de souligner les déterminants, les modalités ainsi que les effets des rapports entre la puissance publique et les entreprises privées dans un secteur de l’économie nationale décrit comme névralgique. Il pose ainsi un jalon de l’histoire de l’énergie dans ce pays d’Afrique en croisant l’histoire des entreprises, l’économie de l’énergie et l’action publique.

    Description: La sociologie de l’alimentation, sans doute parce qu’elle a été longtemps structurée autour des questions de goût, de territoire, de patrimoine et qu’elle explore la question de la commensalité, a privilégié dans sa problématisation de l’acte alimentaire la ligne directrice de la continuité. Aussi, en proposant dans cet ouvrage collectif de soumettre l’alimentation au cadre d’analyse de la promesse, nous souhaitions opérer un pas de côté problématique susceptible de mieux rendre compte de l’articulation entre le temps long de l’histoire de l’alimentation, sa dimension anthropologique et les effets de rupture engendrés par certaines promesses. L’objectif était double : d’une part interroger le caractère novateur des promesses alimentaires et donc de saisir leurs conditions d’émergence, de circulation et de transformation ; d’autre part, comprendre ce que les mangeurs en font concrètement au quotidien : les adoptent-ils ? les rejettent-ils ? les bricolent-ils ? Ont ainsi été rassemblées neuf contributions issues d’enquêtes de sciences sociales et d’histoire, à dominante ethnographique, richement illustrées et réalisées sur trois continents. Les promesses décryptées ici s’arriment à des produits (pain, probiotiques, compléments alimentaires), à des pratiques (les régimes « sans », le mouvement « zéro déchet ») et à des enjeux (l’autonomie alimentaire des villes, l’alimentation en fin de vie, la malnutrition infantile et l’aide alimentaire). En cela, l’ouvrage s’adresse aux étudiants, enseignants, chercheurs et autres professionnels intéressés par l’alimentation contemporaine et ses dimensions sociale, politique, nutritionnelle et écologique.

    Description: When writers document the life of a saint, they describe past events, they put them into a narrative context that serves to further their story and, at the same time, fit within a larger plan of salvation. Hagiography is therefore a form of historical writing, but it differs from that of chroniclers. The hagiographers of Late Antiquity sought to distinguish themselves from secular historians. However, their successors in the early Middle Ages were concerned with chronology and source comparison, leading to the development of scholarly techniques and ethical practices that closely align with those expected of historians. Consequently, their works shed new light on what the Middle Ages defined as history, while also revealing the historical culture and the way the Latin West shaped its understanding of the past through stories about saints.

    Description: L’IRHiS-UMR 8529 (Univ. Lille, CNRS) a organisé à l’université de Lille le 25 novembre 2016 une première journée d’étude consacrée aux collections extra-européennes dans les musées d’Europe du Nord-Ouest. Cette rencontre, au cours de laquelle sont intervenus des conservateurs de musées, des chercheurs et des doctorants de France et de Belgique, a donné lieu à une publication en ligne : https://books.openedition.org/irhis/3279. À travers les différentes contributions proposées, il a été possible de saisir l’histoire de la constitution et de la présentation de collections ethnographiques muséales en Europe du Nord-Ouest ainsi que les problématiques et les enjeux divers qui en découlent. Il s’agissait de faire prendre conscience à la fois aux chercheurs et aux pouvoirs publics de la nécessité de mieux considérer ces collections, de les valoriser aux yeux du plus grand nombre et de permettre un accès facilité aux chercheurs. Lors de cette deuxième édition, une place plus large a été donnée à l’histoire d’objets extraeuropéens issus de collections muséales européennes. À l’heure où les demandes de restitutions se font toujours plus pressantes, il devient indispensable de mieux connaître l’origine des collections et de re-contextualiser les objets. Le principe de cette publication a été de demander aux intervenants de choisir un objet extra-européen ou une collection d’objets extraeuropéens en particulier, peu importe l’origine géographique, et d’en raconter l’histoire : quels sont les propriétaires, quelles sont les conditions de sa collecte (instructions, cadre normatif, activité prédatrice, hasard, simple acquisition monnayée, etc) ; quel est l’usage et quelle est la signification de l’objet dans son contexte ethnographique ; comment a lieu le passage du statut de spécimen ethnographique à celui d’œuvre d’art. Il a également été demandé de préciser la situation de médiation dans laquelle les objets choisis sont placés et les améliorations possibles pour mieux valoriser les artefacts, au moment où la volonté de « décoloniser » les musées est toujours plus palpable.

    Description: La Ḥāfiẓiyya est une confrérie soufie de taille modeste, installée dans le sud du gouvernorat de Giza depuis le xixe siècle. Cette petite confrérie, affiliée à la Ḫalwatiyya, confrérie plus ancienne et aujourd’hui l’une des plus importantes d’Égypte, contribue à l’organisation de la vie religieuse locale par ses pèlerinages et ses rassemblements. La famille de son cheikh fondateur, ʿAbd al-Ḥāfiẓ (m. 1303/1886), dirige toujours la confrérie et a acquis une notabilité locale, au point d’exercer des fonctions politiques et d’arbitrage importantes. Une étude de terrain a permis de montrer l’ancrage d’une mémoire collective dans des pratiques confrériques héritées de l’enseignement du cheikh et ses descendants, se réclamant elles-mêmes de la tradition de la Ḫalwatiyya. Un manuel de soufisme, la Hidāyat al-rāġibīn fī al-sayr wa-l-sulūk ilā malik al-mulūk rabb al-ʿālamīn [La Bonne direction pour ceux qui désirent cheminer vers le Roi des rois Seigneur des mondes], assume ce rôle de transmission écrite ; l’étude de la tradition orale révèle quant à elle le travail de la mémoire et la formation d’une identité confrérique locale et originale. Faire l’histoire de la Ḥāfiẓiyya conduit à évoquer l’histoire sociale des campagnes égyptiennes et à comprendre comment s’articule l’identité locale d’une modeste confrérie de Moyenne-Égypte avec une tradition confrérique plus large et pluriséculaire.

    Description: Cultural exchanges between France and Greece peaked during the three decades that spanned from 1945 to 1975, despite, or perhaps because of, the successive crises Greece had to contend with during this period, from the Civil War (1944–1949) to the military junta (1967–1974). Greek intellectual and artistic elites were still very much drawn to post-war Paris, where they found both refuge from the chaos that reigned in their native land and an opening on modernity. So, Greece came to Paris, a place where a new generation of artists got a chance to show their work, where Greek architects made a name for themselves, often starting off with a job in Le Corbusier’s studio, and where Greek literature was translated into French like never before. However, this was a journey in both directions, and France also went to Greece, where French ideas flourished, in art, literature and philosophy. The names of the people who undertook this journey back and forth, from one shore of the Mediterranean to the other, include Candilis, Dubuisson, Xenakis, Restany, Kessanlis, Aragon, Ritsos, Éluard, Kazantzakis, Sartre, Vassilikos, Milliex and many others.

Loin d’être seulement « faite pour dormir », la nuit possède cependant ses coutumes et ses rythmes, assortis en Europe à la multitude des régions et des milieux sociaux. Jouant du ressort de la peur du crime, les pouvoirs régaliens ont tenté depuis longtemps — mais pas toujours avec succès — de contrôler la vie nocturne, notamment par le moyen de la police urbaine et de l’éclairage public. Ces intrusions sécuritaires sont à leur tour à l’origine d’une transformation de la vie nocturne.

    Description: Au milieu du XIXe siècle, l’unification de l’Italie autour du royaume de Piémont-Sardaigne conduit à la disparition des États pontificaux. Cet événement a des répercussions dans toute l’Europe, et notamment en France. Le soutien apporté par Napoléon III à la cause italienne pousse en effet les catholiques, inquiets du sort du pape, à se détacher du régime impérial. Cet ouvrage met en lumière la mobilisation massive des catholiques français en faveur de la papauté au cours des années 1860 et montre comment le Saint-Siège a cherché à en tirer profit pour faire face aux difficultés causées par l’effondrement de son pouvoir temporel. À ce titre, une attention particulière est accordée aux aspects militaires (engagement au sein des zouaves pontificaux) et financiers (dons au denier de Saint-Pierre) du mouvement. L’ampleur de ce soutien et la diversité des formes qu’il prend montrent que, à rebours de certaines idées reçues, le XIXe siècle constitue pour la papauté et l’Église bien moins une période de déclin qu’un moment d’élaboration de nouveaux moyens d’action destinés à perpétuer leur influence.

    Description: Dem niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag kam durch die weit ausgreifende Politik der Republik zwischen den westfälischen Friedensschlüssen und den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten des 18. Jahrhunderts eine Schlüsselstellung im europäischen Gesandtschaftswesen zu. In den Kriegen, die auf die Epochenwende 1648 und 1659/60 folgten, wurde nicht mehr wie in den vorhergehenden Religionskriegen um die Existenz gerungen, sondern um die Aufrechterhaltung oder Wiederherstellung einer gedachten Machtbalance. Daraus erwuchs den Gesandten eine neue Aufgabenfülle und politische Rolle. Das blieb nicht ohne Wirkung auf die Gesandten, die Veränderungen nicht nur ertrugen, sondern zunehmend selbst gestaltend eingriffen. Diese dynamischen Prozesse in der Arbeitsweise von Gesandten dreier Höfe am niederländischen Regierungssitz Den Haag stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit. Indem aufgearbeitet wird, wie Den Haag von einem Treffpunkt von Gesandten zum Brennpunkt europäischer Diplomatie wurde, möchte die vorliegende Studie einen Beitrag zur Geschichte des Gesandtschaftswesens im frühneuzeitlichen Europa leisten.

    Description: « Il ne suffit pas d'avoir des lois, il faut encore veiller à leur exécution […]. Que seraient les meilleures lois si elles n'étaient pas exécutées ? De pures abstractions. » Cette mise en garde du député Vienot-Vaublanc témoigne du problème aussi crucial que récurrent qu'a constitué, tout au long de la période révolutionnaire, l'exécution des lois. Comment s'assurer que tous les décrets votés par les assemblées ont bel et bien été exécutés alors même que leur « mise en actes » incombe constitutionnellement au pouvoir exécutif ? Comment faire en sorte que ces décrets soient bel et bien respectés « à la lettre » par ceux qui sont chargés de les faire exécuter (les ministres) et de les faire appliquer (les administrateurs locaux), ces agents se permettant trop souvent d'en détourner la « lettre » ou d'en dévoyer l'« esprit » ? Comment, enfin, parvenir à ce que les lois soient comprises et admises des citoyens qui sont tenus de s'y conformer, mais qui ne manquent jamais d'en contester la teneur ? Si déterminantes qu'elles soient dans le cadre de la construction et de la stabilisation d'un État de droit, ces questions n'ont jusqu’ici fait l’objet d'aucune étude systématique. Cet ouvrage se propose d'esquisser les premières lignes d'une histoire encore trop largement méconnue pour la période révolutionnaire. Réunissant les contributions d'un ensemble de jeunes chercheurs, il interroge les mécanismes complexes de l'exécution de la loi en termes d'échelles, d'acteurs et de pratiques afin de questionner l'efficience du pouvoir exécutif en regard de l'effectivité des lois révolutionnaires.

    Description: As we commemorate the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, this study by Pascal Kitromilidès of the reception of the French Revolution and the influence it had on the birth of nationalism in the Balkans is timely. The 1990 Greek edition was very much in tune with the events of the day, from the 1989 commemorations to mark the Bicentennial of the French Revolution to the upheaval in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe in the late eighties and early nineties. This revised edition in Frenchw invites us to take another look at this period of our recent European past by examining the links between revolutionary ideas and the construction of nationalisms, as the work of any historian as a rule tends to converse with the issues of their own era. This re-examination of the politics of the Enlightenment brings a new perspective, in the light of other contexts and shifts the focus by using the Balkans as a starting point. It reveals a new vision of how French revolutionary ideas were received in Europe and how that reception was criticised by liberal thinkers, as well as providing a more thorough perspective on the specific role Hellenism played in the new landscape that emerged between the end of the 18th century and the middle of the 19th century. The eminently revolutionary ideas of nationhood and freedom had a particular resonance in the Balkans and in South-Eastern Europe.

The author explores the regional characteristics of the ›Gymnasien‹ as well as the development of the ›Realanstalten‹ and the higher education of girls. Among the eight schools included, the ›Königliches Friedrichs-Kollegium‹ occupies a prominent position because of its model character for all of Prussia. Wilhelm von Humboldt‘s activities in Königsberg, which were fundamental for the school reform from 1809 onwards, and the Königsberg school plan he developed there are dealt with in detail by the author. In accordance with Humboldt‘s goal of equal status for the subjects Latin and Greek, mathematics and history, these and the corresponding teaching subjects as well as research at Königsberg University are considered in detail. A separate chapter is devoted to the reception of Humboldt‘s school concept in the Baltic provinces.

Die Autorin erforscht die regionalen Besonderheiten der Gymnasien sowie die Entwicklung der Realanstalten und der höheren Mädchenbildung. Unter den acht einbezogenen Schulen nimmt das Königliche Friedrichs-Kollegium wegen seines Modellcharakters für ganz Preußen eine hervorgehobene Stellung ein. Auf die für die Schulreform ab 1809 grundlegende Tätigkeit Wilhelm von Humboldts in Königsberg und seinen dort entwickelten Königsberger Schulplan geht die Autorin umfassend ein. Gemäß der von Humboldt angestrebten Gleichrangigkeit der Fächer Latein und Griechisch, Mathematik und Geschichte werden diese und die entsprechenden Lehrfächer sowie die Forschung an der Königsberger Universität detailliert betrachtet. Der Rezeption von Humboldts Schulkonzept in den baltischen Ostseeprovinzen ist ein eigenes Kapitel gewidmet. Die Arbeit wurde ausgezeichnet mit dem Gierschke-Dornburg-Preis 2021.

    Description: Pendant près de vingt-deux ans (1543-1565), Jean de Bretagne, duc d’Étampes, est à la tête de la Bretagne en tant que gouverneur de la province. Héritier des comtes de Penthièvre, eux-mêmes issus des ducs de Bretagne, il devient un fidèle serviteur des Valois à qui il doit tous ses honneurs. Des sources renouvelées, tant épistolaires qu’administratives, permettent désormais de mieux cerner les contours du métier de gouverneur dans une province en voie d’intégration au royaume de France, soit entre le règne de François Ier et les premières guerres de Religion. Au quotidien, le gouverneur de Bretagne doit assurer une grande diversité de missions : défense armée d’une imposante frontière maritime en contact permanent avec l’Espagne et les Flandres des Habsbourg ou l’Angleterre des Tudors ; gestion des deniers royaux ; bon respect de la justice du souverain, etc. Avec l’émergence des troubles religieux, c’est aussi à la paix entre les confessions qu’il faut désormais veiller. Surtout, à la lecture des sources, il est frappant de constater que le gouverneur de Bretagne apparaît très souvent aussi bien comme un relais que comme un intercesseur entre sa province et le roi de France. Trait d’union entre le centre et la périphérie, entre la cour et la province, cet acteur politique de premier ordre a longtemps été mal compris et mal jugé par l’historiographie. L’analyse renouvelée de ses réseaux, de son influence et de son large pouvoir provincial permet de réévaluer le rôle tout à fait particulier de ce type de serviteur du roi dans la France de la Renaissance.

    Description: L’irrédentisme est une doctrine politique qui, à partir des années 1870 en Italie, revendique l’annexion de l’ensemble des territoires considérés comme italiens et demeurés en la possession de nations étrangères, en premier lieu l’Autriche-Hongrie. Cet ouvrage analyse ce concept et courant idéologique et politique souvent cité, mais mal connu en France. Il a également le mérite de considérer non seulement le point de vue italien, mais aussi celui austro-hongrois. Sont examinés le ressenti des populations irrédentes, c’est-à-dire les Italiens d’Autriche-Hongrie, les répercussions du phénomène irrédentiste sur les relations internationales de toute l’Europe, ainsi que son rôle dans la montée des tensions qui menèrent à la Première Guerre mondiale. Cet ouvrage, bien documenté, s’articule autour de trois parties : la situation des Italiens dans l’empire des Habsbourg après le Risorgimento ; la présentation des terres irrédentes, dans leur diversité, du Trentin à la Dalmatie en passant par Trieste ; l’irrédentisme comme pierre d’achoppement des relations entre l’Empire austro-hongrois et l’Italie, pourtant alliés.

    Description: Entre la fin du XIXe siècle et la Première Guerre mondiale, le jeune État italien connaît un vaste mouvement migratoire qui porte plusieurs millions de ses citoyens à chercher fortune ailleurs. Si les pays américains et européens accueillent la majeure partie de cette population, d’importantes communautés s’installent également sur les côtes méridionales du bassin méditerranéen. C’est notamment le cas de la Tunisie, devenue protectorat français, qui compte près de 90 000 Italiens en 1905 pour seulement 35 000 Français. Cette majorité démographique des Italiens ainsi que leur implication active dans le développement économique du territoire ne sont pas sans créer des tensions entre la France et l’Italie, pour qui la Tunisie représente une sorte de « colonie manquée » qui vient raviver ses aspirations colonialistes en Afrique. Cette communauté est d’autant plus singulière que les ressortissants de la Péninsule, majoritairement ouvriers, se trouvent dans une situation inter­médiaire entre la classe dominante des colonisateurs français et celle des colonisés tunisiens, dont ils partagent pourtant les mêmes conditions de vie. Cet ouvrage, à travers l’exemple des Italiens de Tunisie, interroge ainsi la manière dont une identité nationale peut se construire en dehors de toute territorialité.

    Description: La littérature dite « populaire » a longtemps été considérée comme une littérature uchronique et apolitique, tournée seulement vers le divertissement. Il faut attendre le début des années 1990 pour qu’elle soit pleinement intégrée aux études littéraires. Les travaux pionniers de Lise Queffélec-Dumasy ont contribué de manière essentielle à cette réévaluation, fécondant ceux de nombreux universitaires et doctorants, en France et bien au-delà. Dans le présent ouvrage, ce sont quinze chercheurs d’envergure internationale qui portent de nouveaux regards sur les caractéristiques et enjeux de la littérature populaire des XIXe et XXe siècles, du feuilleton à la BD, rendant un hommage aussi original quʼamical à leur collègue « Lise ». Consacrée d’abord à Dumas, la réflexion sʼattache ensuite aux spécificités et aux pouvoirs de réinvention de la fiction populaire, pour situer enfin écritures et discours dans leur contexte éditorial et médiatique. Tout au long de ces analyses se croisent les questions que la notion de « populaire » fait inévitablement surgir : celles des personnages et procédés mis en œuvre, celles des publics et des mutations engendrées par la démocratisation politique et culturelle.
