    Description: Auch wenn im Zuge des Iconic-Turns Historiker vermehrt auf Bildquellen zurückgriffen, so blieben die verbreitetsten Bildmedien der poströmischen Zeit, nämlich Münzen und Siegel, in Handbüchern und Studien unterrepräsentiert. Zu europäischen Herrschersiegeln dieser Zeit existiert bis heute nicht einmal ein Corpus. Dieser Band greift ebendiese Lücke auf, um die politische Kommunikation mittels Herrscherbildern auf Massenmedien der Franken im ständigen Vergleich mit denen anderer poströmischen Kulturen (Oströmer, Angelsachsen, Langobarden, Westgoten etc.) zu untersuchen und die teils höchst unterschiedlichen Entwicklungen zu erklären. Dabei wird auch vor heißdiskutierten Themen wie dem „Monetarierwesen" oder der „arabo-byzantinischen" Münzprägung nicht haltgemacht.     Description: This volume concludes the edition of Heinrich von Mügeln's smaller poems. This is the first complete edition of the hymns of one of the most important poets of the 14th century. The volume also contains two of Mügeln's Latin texts: 'Artes liberales' and 'Libri tocius biblie', two summaries on the liberal arts and the books of the Old Testament. The centerpiece of the volume is 'Der meide kranz', an allegorical poem about the struggle between the liberal arts and between the virtues and nature, written in honor of Emperor Charles IV. An index of names and words makes the entire edition accessible and thus forms an essential key to the author's oeuvre.

Seine Briefe entstanden als Reaktion auf ein Dilemma: Nur als Statthalter und Gesandter konnte Foscarini in der Konkurrenz mit anderen venezianischen Adeligen bestehen. In der Peripherie war er aber von den Verteilungswettkämpfen abgeschnitten, die in der Zentrale in geheimen Abstimmungen abliefen. Kunstvolle Briefe an andere Politiker und politisch einflussreiche Intellektuelle sollten das Problem lösen. Diese Briefe nutzten humanistische, juristische und theologische Metaphern, um Themen anzusprechen, die außerhalb der offiziellen Gremien tabu waren. Foscarini legte eine didaktisch aufgebaute Briefsammlung mit den wirksamsten seiner Briefe an –　ein Erfahrungsschatz, den er seinen Söhnen für ihre politischen Laufbahnen hinterließ. Die Publikation kontextualisiert in einer interdisziplinär angelegten Analyse die Einzelbriefe anhand von gelehrten Textvorlagen und Wissensbeständen sowie Archivmaterial.     Description: Despite the opposition of two parties - first the Whigs and the Tories, then the Liberals and the Conservatives - 19th century Britain was characterized by a political culture of moderation. The bearers of this political culture were a group of politicians who always sought the middle way between the extremes and were known as Liberal Tories or Liberal Conservatives. This book fills a research gap by examining the development of this British Liberal Conservatism in the period from 1750 to 1850, first looking at Edmund Burke's political philosophy and then showing how the Liberal Tories and Liberal Conservatives who followed him drew on his thinking. It shows how politicians such as George Canning and Sir Robert Peel, based on Burke and the political philosophy of the "Old Whigs", pursued a centrist policy that was always oriented towards the virtues of moderation and prudence. The book thus sheds light on the conservative variant of liberalism that characterized Great Britain throughout the 19th century.

    Description: This book addresses the question of vigilance in the face of an epidemic at the beginning of the 18th century, based on the example of the fight against the plague in the French Mediterranean. Because of its trans-Mediterranean trade, this region was particularly exposed to the risk of plague so that it sought to protect itself with concrete measures such as quarantine. ; Cet ouvrage s’intéresse au risque et à la vigilance face à la peste sur la côte méditerranéenne française dans la première moitié du 18e siècle. Entre 1720 et 1722, une terrible épidémie de peste frappe Marseille, la Provence, le Comtat-Venaissin et une partie du Languedoc, causant environ 100'000 décès. Aussi dramatique soit-elle, cette épidémie constitue une exception durant la première moitié du 18e siècle. La première partie de ce travail analyse les rapports entre vigilance, espace et communication et met en évidence une prévention qui s’exerce tant de manière transméditerranéenne que de manière interne au royaume de France. Une véritable «bureaucratie sanitaire» se met en place. La deuxième partie étudie les normes et les pratiques de la vigilance sanitaire, tant sur un plan politico-sanitaire (quarantaines des navires, des passagers et des marchandises) que sur un plan religieux (processions et prières pour endiguer la maladie). Enfin, la dernière partie se limite à la peste de 1720-1722 et illustre le passage d’une vigilance préventive à une vigilance réactive en s’intéressant aux «acteurs de la peste» et aux attitudes et tactiques développées face au fléau épidémique.

Rothe, who had already written spiritual works and three extensive chronicles ('Eisenacher Stadtchronik', 'Thüringische Landeschronik' and 'Weltchronik'), offers a comprehensive rendition of the chronicle and legendary tradition in the rhyming verse legend of over 4,000 verses, whereby, in addition to the chronicles, he particularly exploits the Latin Vita of Dietrich von Apolda. In the formal connection to the legends of the saints and the orientation towards chronicles in terms of content, Rothe adopts a cross-genre standpoint. Elisabeth's life is integrated into the genealogy of the landgrave's dynasty and thus becomes part of the landgrave's memorial culture. In the history of the text's reception, with numerous copies up to the 18th century, there is evidence of corresponding emphases: the work was used partly as a devotional book and partly as part of the dynastic memoria of the Thuringian dynasty.

    Description: Au début du siècle dernier, le sultan du Maroc vient de signer un traité qui place désormais son pays sous le protectorat de la France (30 mars 1912). À l’ombre du maréchal Lyautey, un sultan de substitution, totalement soumis aux nouveaux maîtres français, a été proclamé. Cependant, nombreux sont ceux qui, au Maroc, refusent le fait accompli et se révoltent face à la mainmise étrangère sur le pays. Ainsi, dans le Sud marocain, Moulay Ahmed el Hiba, fils d’un marabout ouest-saharien (Ma el Aïnin), se fait proclamer sultan du Jihad en 1912 ; une première fois à Tiznit, la seconde à Marrakech. Ces événements ont donné naissance à un mouvement qui pendant plus de vingt ans (1912-1934) symbolisera pour ces populations berbères et ouest-sahariennes la résistance à l’avancée inéluctable des troupes coloniales françaises et espagnoles. Fondée sur une analyse croisée d’archives inédites, aussi bien françaises que marocaines, l’auteur fait la lumière sur un événement fondateur de la conquête coloniale du Maroc. Mythifiée, récupérée ou occultée, la figure fondatrice du mouvement hibiste est encore aujourd’hui le sujet d’un conflit mémoriel ayant pour objet l’Ouest saharien.

    Description: The history of Montbeliard began in the late 9th century with the construction of a castle on a rocky spur overlooking the Allan and the Lizaine rivers. The city developed as a result of contact with both Burgundian and Germanic culture and by the end of the 14th century had become a commercial and religious centre. The second defensive wall, built in the 15th century is a reflection of the city’s prosperity, encircling as it does the original castle, through as well as the two districts of La Halle and Saint-Martin. Excavation work undertaken in 1993-1994 prior to the construction of a shopping centre in the Velotte quarter of the Saint-Martin district has enabled archeologists to define seven build periods of architectural development covering both buildings and the urban defense system. This work has also shed light on various aspects of daily and social life as experienced by the inhabitants of this area within the city walls the bucolic character of which remained intact up to the final quarter of the 19th century.

Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle. S’appuyant sur de nombreuses archives des couvents et des institutions hospitalières, cette enquête questionne la vocation des sœurs soignantes dans leur quotidien auprès des pauvres de la capitale. Elle propose une histoire du care qui éclaire les enjeux profanes et spirituels de la relation de soin.

Le bocage n'est pas un milieu naturel : c'est un paysage construit ; il n'est pas là de toute éternité, mais il a été fabriqué et entretenu par des générations d'agriculteurs qui avaient besoin de haies pour pratiquer à la fois la culture et le pâturage. L'objet de l'ouvrage d'Annie Antoine est de porter un regard d'historien sur le paysage bocager de l'Ouest de la France : explorer les liens forts et durables tissés entre un paysage et ses habitants, lier la construction du bocage et ses transformations à l'évolution des sociétés rurales qui, de la fin du Moyen Âge aux mutations agricoles contemporaines, l'ont utilisé et transformé.

    Moines, saints et hérétiques dans l’Éthiopie médiévale (2023)

    Description: Ēwosṭātēwos (Eustathe sous forme francisée) fut à l’origine de la fondation de plusieurs monastères dans le premier tiers du xive siècle au nord du royaume chrétien d’Éthiopie. Outre le plaidoyer pour l’indépendance des moines à l’égard des laïcs, Ēwosṭātēwos prônait la stricte observance des deux sabbats, samedi et dimanche, une doctrine jugée hérétique par le souverain et le métropolite égyptien, qui dirigeait l’Église éthiopienne. Les disciples d’Ēwosṭātēwos, les eustathéens, furent mis alors au ban de la société chrétienne dès la seconde moitié du XIVe siècle. Malgré les persécutions, les eustathéens multiplièrent les fondations au nord du royaume, contribuant à la diffusion de leurs idées et fragilisant l’unité de l’Église éthiopienne. Au milieu du XVe siècle, à la faveur du succès rencontré par le respect des deux sabbats, les eustathéens parvinrent à faire triompher leurs positions auprès du roi Zarʾa Yāʿeqob, et devinrent dès lors les précieux alliés du pouvoir royal. Comment expliquer la trajectoire étonnante du mouvement fondé par Ēwosṭātēwos? Cet ouvrage cherche à la fois à comprendre l’expansion paradoxale des premières communautés eustathéennes et les significations de l’hétérodoxie dans la société de l’Éthiopie médiévale. En s’appuyant sur l’analyse des récits des origines et des archives croisée à des enquêtes de terrain, cette enquête démontre que les eustathéens ont su mobiliser de multiples stratégies pour s’implanter au nord du royaume. Ce livre s’attache à montrer comment ces moines ont fait de l’écrit un puissant instrument d’affirmation et de défense face aux différents pouvoirs.

    Description: Un temps oubliée, décriée, ridiculisée, la révolution est aujourd’hui à nouveau un problème politique clé. Outre le Printemps arabe, Occupy Wall Street, Nuit debout, ainsi que les commémorations d’Octobre 17 et de Mai 68 qui en ont réactivé l’imaginaire (voire le désir), un nombre croissant de romans, de récits, de pièces de théâtre et de recueils de poésie contemporains ont pour thème l’insurrection, le soulèvement et la révolte. Une bibliographie comprenant une cinquantaine de titres permet d’en mesurer l’importance. Cette présence de la révolution dans le champ culturel contemporain nous enjoint à reprendre une question posée il y a près d’un siècle par Léon Trotsky, à savoir : comment penser les rapports entre littérature et révolution ? De Jack London au Comité invisible, en passant entre autres par Alfred Döblin, Louis Aragon, Jean Genet et Pierre Michon, cet ouvrage interroge la manière dont les révolutions politiques (réelles ou imaginées, passées ou projetées) ont suscité des configurations et des questionnements esthétiques depuis le début du xxe siècle. Quelles relations entretiennent, dans ces textes, le poétique et le politique ? L’écrivain et le révolutionnaire ? La fiction et l’action ? Aux différentes contributions qui esquissent des réponses à ces interrogations s’ajoutent trois entretiens avec des écrivains (Arno Bertina, Leslie Kaplan, Nathalie Quintane) dont l’œuvre littéraire trame à nouveaux frais la question politique.

    Description: Literary description emerges as one of the central elements of late antique poetry. It serves a dual role in that it interacts both to represent multisensory perceptions and to break through the illusion it creates through metapoetic discourse. This self-referentiality makes the late antique descriptive a space of intense literary communication between poet and readership in different genres and contexts. This study systematically examines the textual strategies of description in selected works by the poets Claudian, Prudence and Ausonius, who were active between the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The texts are analysed with regard to ancient conceptualisations of descriptio and with the help of modern models of literary and cultural studies. The texts show both a continuation and an intensification of already existing traditions, which are expressed in a productive use of intertexts, a complex mediality and a textual world that plays with distance and proximity.

    Description: « Les douleurs d’hommes sont muettes » écrit le comité de rédaction de la revue Maintenir, revue de l’Amicale des anciens des Stalags XVIII, en évoquant le destin tragique des prisonniers de guerre français de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Gaston Duplat – PG matricule 2677 détenu du 23 juin 1940 au 7 mai 1945 au camp de Coëtquidan (Morbihan), puis au Fronstalag 183 de Vannes, enfin au Stalag XVIII C de Markt Pongau (Autriche) – resta lui aussi pudique sur son histoire : un long silence jamais rompu. Un silence, mais deux carnets de captivité, plus de trois cents lettres, deux albums photographiques et un herbier annoté retrouvés dans les archives familiales après son décès et celui de son épouse. Ces documents furent le point de départ d’une longue enquête sur la vie de cette famille brutalement et durablement touchée par la guerre et la captivité du père. Essayer de reconstituer la vie de cette famille et de la comprendre au travers de ses mots et des archives, s’intéresser à l’histoire de la Captivité, des Stalags et des Kommandos mais aussi se pencher sur une histoire singulière, évoquer le destin du prisonnier matricule 2677 mais aussi celui de son épouse et de ses enfants, voilà l’objet de cet ouvrage.

    Description: Au milieu du XIVe siècle, la commune de Florence, qui ne contrôlait jusqu'alors qu'un petit territoire au-delà des murs de la cité, le contado, réussit à assujettir les six principaux centres urbains voisins : Colle Valdelsa, San Gimignano, Prato, Pistoia, Volterra et San Miniato. Pour mener à bien cet assujettissement, le pouvoir florentin ne pouvait cependant se contenter d’une pure et simple conquête militaire : l’issue en aurait été non seulement incertaine mais surtout très difficile à consolider dans le temps. Car même s’ils n’avaient pas atteint l’importance démographique des grandes cités de la région, les centres convoités étaient parvenus à maintenir leur autonomie depuis plus d’un siècle. Ils avaient par conséquent développé une identité politique et culturelle propre, en vertu de laquelle ils auraient pu, une fois conquis, refuser la soumission et constituer partant des foyers permanents de révolte. D’où la nécessité pour les Florentins d’élaborer des instruments en mesure de légitimer leur domination et d’en assurer ainsi la pérennité. Quels furent les mécanismes explicites et implicites de cette entreprise de légitimation ? À partir d’une étude approfondie des actes juridiques qui formalisèrent la soumission et du discours produit sur celle-ci par les chroniques contemporaines, cet ouvrage en analyse les ressorts politiques et culturels. Il permet ainsi de comprendre comment et pourquoi cet assujettissement fut paradoxalement pensé comme la condition nécessaire au maintien de la libertas.

Dans cette étude historique majeure, Victoria de Grazia nous rappelle que le privé est toujours politique dans la quête fasciste de la virilité et du pouvoir.     Description: Quels sont les mécanismes qui ont conduit le rejeton d’une famille de financiers « moyens » du Languedoc à devenir, en 1726, le principal ministre du jeune Louis XV ? Les causes à l’origine de cette réussite sont de plusieurs ordres. D’abord, le mouvement d’ensemble de tout un lignage qui plonge ses racines dans la marchandise du Lodévois depuis au moins le xvie siècle. Puis, le passage à la finance – le maniement des deniers du roi – qui s’effectue avec le grand-père du cardinal dans les premières années du xviie et surtout son oncle Pierre-Moïse, trésorier de France au bureau des finances de Montpellier. Ce dernier favorise la montée à Paris du jeune André-Hercule qui embrasse dès lors la carrière ecclésiastique. Les moteurs de l’ascension sont ensuite individuels et reposent sur le jeu des clientèles, avec en particulier le cardinal de Bonsy puis le cardinal de Noailles qui obtient de Louis XIV l’évêché de Fréjus (1698) pour son protégé. Tirant profit de ses appuis à la cour et de son ferme soutien en faveur de la bulle Unigenitus, mais sans complaisance vis-à-vis des jésuites, Fleury est désigné par Louis XIV mourant précepteur du futur Louis XV. Sa proximité avec le petit roi le positionne dès lors en personnalité majeure. Les décès de Dubois puis de Philippe d’Orléans le laissent seul face au duc de Bourbon (1723). Trois ans seulement vont suffire à M. de Fréjus pour éliminer ce rival. Cette maestria curiale vient clore une ascension complexe, mélange de collectif et de structurel, d’individuel et de conjoncturel : historique, en somme.

    Description: À la différence des comptabilités contemporaines, quelles qu’elles soient, secs alignements de chiffres que l’on a pu aisément informatiser, les documents comptables de la fin du Moyen Âge se limitent rarement à de simples « écritures » d’opérations mathématiques : si celles-ci sont bien présentes, elles se trouvent en fait insérées dans un cadre narratif aux vastes implications techniques, juridiques et politiques. L’objet de ce livre est d’analyser ce discours en posant les premiers jalons d’une typologie des formes comptables sur la longue durée. De nombreuses études de cas sont ici présentées, entre péninsules Ibérique et Italienne, Flandres, Royaume de France, Provence, Dauphiné et terres germaniques, qui mettent à l’épreuve le postulat énoncé en introduction par lequel on propose de considérer les profonds bouleversements de la pratique comptable observables au tournant du xiiie et du xive siècle comme l’une des premières manifestations de la « rupture de l’épistémè occidentale » chère à Michel Foucault.

En faisant référence, par analogie, à la célèbre formule du xiiie siècle selon laquelle « le roi de France est empereur en son royaume », ce livre veut identifier les éléments de la présence royale en Bretagne durant la seconde partie de ce que l’historiographie appelle « l’âge d’or capétien ». Alors que le processus de construction de l’État royal est patiemment mis en œuvre par les souverains capétiens, le cas de la Bretagne constitue un formidable laboratoire où il est possible d’apprécier l’intégration du duché et de son aristocratie au sein du royaume de France. Les mécanismes identifiés par l’historiographie récente (dans les domaines judiciaire, juridictionnel, fiscal, monétaire et militaire) y trouvent une traduction territoriale, notamment par le biais de l’approche cartographique fondée sur l’exploitation de sources souvent inédites. La démarche de l’ouvrage passe par l’analyse du jeu des acteurs : les nobles et les ecclésiastiques, bretons et non bretons ; le duc de Bretagne ; le roi de France et ses officiers. Sur le plan territorial, la pesée de cette intégration au royaume permet d’établir une tripartition du duché éloignée des regards traditionnels qui opposent haute et basse Bretagne : un nord où les marqueurs de la présence du pouvoir royal sont particulièrement visibles ; une partie orientale qui profite de liens étroits noués avec d’importants lignages normands, angevins et poitevins ; enfin, un sud, cœur du domaine ducal plus éloigné du pouvoir royal.

    Description: Si l’on peine à trouver chez les historiens une définition de la dignité car elle semble relever du domaine de la morale, voire du droit, l’honneur n’est devenu un concept que récemment. Pourtant ce sont deux notions qui font agir a priori les mêmes ressorts psychologiques, l’estime de soi et une forme d’orgueil. Les sciences sociales se sont emparées de la notion d’honneur et l’ont analysée au prisme des « sociétés méditerranéennes », lui donnant une définition anthropologique dont la compétition, l’obsession de la pureté sexuelle féminine et la violence vengeresse sont les principaux aspects. En réponse à l’injure, à la violence, à la séduction et au viol de la femme, ce modèle exigeant un acte réparateur est-il applicable au monde antique gréco-romain ? Y retrouve-t-on cette obsession du sang et du sexe qui est au cœur du « modèle anthropologique » ? L’ouvrage vise à resituer dans leur contexte historique les deux notions d’honneur et de dignité depuis l’époque archaïque jusqu’à celle de l’Antiquité tardive. Il les envisage selon quatre points de vue : le rapport entre l’individu et sa communauté politique, la nature de l’honneur familial et féminin en particulier, la violence, enfin, les formes du déshonneur.

    Description: Au milieu du XIXe siècle, l’unification de l’Italie autour du royaume de Piémont-Sardaigne conduit à la disparition des États pontificaux. Cet événement a des répercussions dans toute l’Europe, et notamment en France. Le soutien apporté par Napoléon III à la cause italienne pousse en effet les catholiques, inquiets du sort du pape, à se détacher du régime impérial. Cet ouvrage met en lumière la mobilisation massive des catholiques français en faveur de la papauté au cours des années 1860 et montre comment le Saint-Siège a cherché à en tirer profit pour faire face aux difficultés causées par l’effondrement de son pouvoir temporel. À ce titre, une attention particulière est accordée aux aspects militaires (engagement au sein des zouaves pontificaux) et financiers (dons au denier de Saint-Pierre) du mouvement. L’ampleur de ce soutien et la diversité des formes qu’il prend montrent que, à rebours de certaines idées reçues, le XIXe siècle constitue pour la papauté et l’Église bien moins une période de déclin qu’un moment d’élaboration de nouveaux moyens d’action destinés à perpétuer leur influence.

    Description: Pendant près de vingt-deux ans (1543-1565), Jean de Bretagne, duc d’Étampes, est à la tête de la Bretagne en tant que gouverneur de la province. Héritier des comtes de Penthièvre, eux-mêmes issus des ducs de Bretagne, il devient un fidèle serviteur des Valois à qui il doit tous ses honneurs. Des sources renouvelées, tant épistolaires qu’administratives, permettent désormais de mieux cerner les contours du métier de gouverneur dans une province en voie d’intégration au royaume de France, soit entre le règne de François Ier et les premières guerres de Religion. Au quotidien, le gouverneur de Bretagne doit assurer une grande diversité de missions : défense armée d’une imposante frontière maritime en contact permanent avec l’Espagne et les Flandres des Habsbourg ou l’Angleterre des Tudors ; gestion des deniers royaux ; bon respect de la justice du souverain, etc. Avec l’émergence des troubles religieux, c’est aussi à la paix entre les confessions qu’il faut désormais veiller. Surtout, à la lecture des sources, il est frappant de constater que le gouverneur de Bretagne apparaît très souvent aussi bien comme un relais que comme un intercesseur entre sa province et le roi de France. Trait d’union entre le centre et la périphérie, entre la cour et la province, cet acteur politique de premier ordre a longtemps été mal compris et mal jugé par l’historiographie. L’analyse renouvelée de ses réseaux, de son influence et de son large pouvoir provincial permet de réévaluer le rôle tout à fait particulier de ce type de serviteur du roi dans la France de la Renaissance.

    Description: Entre la fin du XIXe siècle et la Première Guerre mondiale, le jeune État italien connaît un vaste mouvement migratoire qui porte plusieurs millions de ses citoyens à chercher fortune ailleurs. Si les pays américains et européens accueillent la majeure partie de cette population, d’importantes communautés s’installent également sur les côtes méridionales du bassin méditerranéen. C’est notamment le cas de la Tunisie, devenue protectorat français, qui compte près de 90 000 Italiens en 1905 pour seulement 35 000 Français. Cette majorité démographique des Italiens ainsi que leur implication active dans le développement économique du territoire ne sont pas sans créer des tensions entre la France et l’Italie, pour qui la Tunisie représente une sorte de « colonie manquée » qui vient raviver ses aspirations colonialistes en Afrique. Cette communauté est d’autant plus singulière que les ressortissants de la Péninsule, majoritairement ouvriers, se trouvent dans une situation inter­médiaire entre la classe dominante des colonisateurs français et celle des colonisés tunisiens, dont ils partagent pourtant les mêmes conditions de vie. Cet ouvrage, à travers l’exemple des Italiens de Tunisie, interroge ainsi la manière dont une identité nationale peut se construire en dehors de toute territorialité.

Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.

    Description: À mesure que le déclassement a été perçu comme un problème contemporain, il est devenu un objet de premier plan pour la sociologie des inégalités et, dans une moindre mesure, pour les études historiques qui ont privilégié les formes de mobilité ascendante, celles qui sont aussi les plus productrices de sources. En prenant en compte l’Ancien Régime tout en englobant le moment révolutionnaire, cet ouvrage collectif observe, à partir des terrains français et italiens, le phénomène du déclassement dans le cadre d’un ordre hiérarchique, rigide, pensé comme naturel donc immuable, mais qui n’était pas immobile, alternant des périodes de plus ou moins grande ouverture ou fermeture, mais aussi dans une phase de rupture, de transition et de redéfinition où la perte de statut et de fortune a pu s’accompagner d’opportunités de reclassement. Les études ici réunies ont été guidées par un questionnaire commun : montrer la difficulté d’appréhender des situations de déclassement où se mêlaient, selon des degrés variables, appauvrissement, déshonneur, déchéance morale ; restituer la parole – rare - des acteurs historiques sur leur expérience du déclassement ; montrer la difficulté de mesurer le déclassement à partir de marqueurs objectifs tant il s’agissait d’un phénomène relatif, parfois paradoxal, conditionné par un environnement social lui-même mouvant ; envisager le déclassement comme un processus en s’attachant à l’interprétation de trajectoires personnelles et collectives ; interroger, enfin, le rôle joué par l’État dans l’ordonnancement des frontières sociales.

    Description: Si l’histoire traditionnelle de l’hérésie au Moyen Âge s’est longtemps confondue avec celle des exclus de la société, l’approche récente se focalise davantage sur les diverses autorités qui, au coeur du pouvoir, élaborèrent la norme religieuse : l’hérésie n’existe que parce que l’orthodoxie en a d’abord décidé. Il reste que, loin de se présenter comme une essence immuable, elle s’impose tout au long du Moyen Âge comme un concept et une qualification d’une très grande plasticité. L’extension progressive du domaine de l’hérésie à de nombreuses formes de dissidence finit par lui assurer le statut d’un crime englobant. En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Ainsi peut-on mieux comprendre la surprenante transformation de l’épisode guerrier en symbole universel de paix et de liberté.

    Description: En 1626, une première compagnie par actions est formée à l’initiative de Richelieu pour mener la colonisation des Petites Antilles et organiser le trafic transatlantique. Elle repose sur les associés, des proches du cardinal, qui en possèdent le capital et en assurent la direction. En 1635, elle est réorganisée afin de pouvoir satisfaire d’une façon plus efficace les objectifs qui lui ont été fixés par la monarchie, à savoir, conquérir et peupler des terres et favoriser le commerce. Elle prend alors le nom de Compagnie des îles de l’Amérique. Sous sa conduite, les Français déjà établis à Saint-Christophe s’installent à la Guadeloupe et à la Martinique et affichent des prétentions sur la Grenade, Sainte-Croix, Saint- Martin et Saint-Barthélemy. Plusieurs milliers de colons tentent l’aventure en franchissant l’océan à la quête d’un meilleur avenir et de richesses. Les terres sont exploitées pour satisfaire les besoins de la métropole. Quelques grands domaines s’appuyant sur une main-d’œuvre constituée d’esclaves africains développent de nouvelles productions comme le sucre et l’indigo. Mais la Compagnie est bientôt confrontée à de multiples difficultés qui remettent en cause son fonctionnement et ses finalités. Les tensions dans les îles et les faibles retombées de sa politique économique conduisent les associés à cesser progressivement leurs activités à partir de 1649. Sa fin pourtant ne signifie pas l’échec de la colonisation française des Petites Antilles. L’héritage qu’elle lègue va fructifier durant les décennies suivantes et donner naissance au premier empire colonial français.

Fondées en 1929 par deux religieux dominicains dans le prolongement du succès de la revue La Vie Spirituelle, elles ont rapidement acquis, par leurs périodiques et par leurs livres, une réputation enviable dans l’aile marchante de l’Église de France : mouvement ecclésiologique (collection « Unam Sanctam » du père Congar) ; mouvement biblique (Bible dite de Jérusalem) ; mouvement patristique (collection « Sources chrétiennes ») ; mouvement liturgique (revue La Maison-Dieu) ; mouvement théologique (collection « Cogitatio Fidei »). Elles ont été ainsi un des vecteurs majeurs en France de l’aggiornamento conciliaire voulu par Jean XXIII. Mais leur histoire n’a pas été un long fleuve tranquille : les Éditions du Cerf ont traversé bien des orages du fait de leurs positions d’ouverture sur les grandes crises du xxe siècle : condamnation par Rome de l’Action française, guerre d’Espagne, Seconde Guerre mondiale, guerre froide ou guerre d’Algérie. C’est ce parcours mouvementé, conjuguant histoire générale et histoire religieuse, que retrace ce livre, rédigé de première main par un universitaire familier de tels événements, avec les archives des provinces dominicaines françaises. Il éclaire tout un pan de l’histoire du catholicisme en France au xxe siècle.

    Description: Ce livre est le résultat d’une enquête menée sur les archives les plus anciennes d’une institution originale et mal connue : la Pénitencerie apostolique. Né au tout début du XIIIe siècle dans le giron d’une papauté exerçant son pouvoir sur tout l’Occident latin, ce nouvel office fut d’abord chargé d’entendre en confession les pèlerins qui se rendaient à Rome pour demander l’absolution de leurs péchés. Puis il se vit mandaté pour répondre aux suppliques qui, chaque jour, étaient adressées au souverain pontife. L’enquête s’appuie donc sur les « formulaires » voués à recueillir, réordonner et abréger les milliers de lettres que la Pénitencerie expédiait en réponse aux suppliants. Véritables répertoires d’exemples, dans lesquels la forme et la norme étaient indissociables, ces manuels reflètent tous les cas de figure auxquels pouvait être confrontée la Pénitencerie : homicides, naissances illégitimes, mariages incestueux, faux et usage de faux, moines ayant fui leurs couvents, etc. À tous ces suppliants, le tribunal du pape avait la charge d’octroyer des dispenses, des licences ou des absolutions, parfois dans le secret du « for de la confession ». Situé au croisement d’une histoire des pratiques de l’écrit et de l’avènement des bureaucraties, du gouvernement pastoral et de la souveraineté pontificale, de la confession auriculaire et de l’espace public, ce livre entend dépasser le cadre classique de la monographie institutionnelle.

Cette interprétation longtemps vivace a eu pour effet de passer sous silence l’action décisive des populations, des habitants des villes eux-mêmes, face à ces aménagements urbains. À partir des embellissements qu’ont connus les villes d’Aix et de Marseille au milieu du xviie siècle, cet ouvrage permet de revenir sur ces événements qui ont profondément marqué l’organisation de nos villes. En reléguant au second plan les aspects architecturaux et monumentaux de ces accroissements d’ampleur, pour se concentrer sur les processus juridiques et sociaux qui encadrent et accompagnent ces opérations urbaines, ce livre éclaire sous un jour nouveau l’action des habitants les plus divers dans ces projets. À partir d’un éventail documentaire particulièrement varié, ce sont plus largement les modes de production de l’espace des sociétés anciennes qui se trouvent mis en lumière. Du marché des échanges de biens immobiliers et fonciers aux appareils de pouvoir en charge de l’administration des territoires urbains, en passant par l’économie et les chantiers de construction, cette étude permet de mieux cerner la manière dont s’articulaient les logiques individuelles et les pratiques collectives dans la gestion et l’administration de ces « villes en train de se faire ».

Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

Pourtant, au xixe siècle, la technologie revêt un autre sens, celui d’une science de la technique, c’est-à-dire d’une science des arts et des intentions fabricatrices. Le caméralisme a joué un rôle fondamental dans l’édification de cette discipline dont l’un des textes fondateurs est l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie de Johann Beckmann (1806). Dans cet essai, Beckmann propose une science nouvelle, la technologie générale, qui classe les activités humaines par opérations. Maintes fois cité et jamais traduit, il fallait rendre disponible en français ce texte essentiel, qui a ouvert la voie à une compréhension générale de l’action et à la philosophie des techniques. Tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux savoirs de l’action trouveront chez Beckmann la tentative la plus aboutie de formalisation du geste comme unité fondamentale de l’activité humaine. Pour la première fois, l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie a fait l’objet d’une traduction menée par le regretté Joost Mertens, avec la collaboration de Guillaume Carnino et de Jochen Hoock. À l’occasion de cette publication et afin d’approfondir la réflexion sur le creuset européen de la technologie, une analyse est proposée au fil d’articles qui accompagnent la traduction. L’enjeu est d’une part d’étudier un milieu savant à travers sa formation, ses activités, ses techniques intellectuelles et d’autre part, d’interroger les résonances de la technologie.

Le présent ouvrage envisage la place que tient la religion dans l’identité des minorités, à partir de trois axes : la spécificité de l’identité religieuse des minorités, puisque celles-ci se définissent selon d’autres critères (linguistiques, sociaux, politiques, etc.) que la religion ; la manière dont les minorités religieuses ont été observées et jugées par des personnes qui leur étaient extérieures (juristes, théologiens, voyageurs ou diplomates) ; les stratégies adoptées pour vivre sa différence. L’espace retenu est l’Europe et la Méditerranée, du ve siècle avant J.-C. à la fin du xviiie siècle. Cette zone, marquée par le développement des trois religions monothéistes, offre un cadre d’étude cohérent. Les historiens disposent de sources variées, qu’ils peuvent croiser, pour suivre l’évolution des relations entre des communautés qui s’y côtoient depuis des siècles.

Zum Preisträger: Sir Ian Kershaw wurde 1943 in Oldham, Lancashire, geboren. Er studierte in Liverpool und Oxford. Nach Tätigkeiten an den Universitäten Manchester, Bochum und Nottingham lehrte er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2008 als Professor für moderne Geschichte an der Universität Sheffield. Sir Ian Kershaw ist Träger des Bundesverdienstkreuzes.

Face à l’indétermination qui caractérise ces aires de marge, on identifie diverses tentatives technologiques et cartographiques, souvent convergentes, de réduire et traverser ces zones grises. En effet, en dépit de leur marginalité, ces espaces sont tissés de réseaux, maillés de ports insulaires ou caravaniers, dans ce qu’on a pu appeler, dans le cadre méditerranéen, la « connectivité » (Horden et Purcell). Enfin, l’actualité récente rappelle leur dimension stratégique sur le plan politique et économique. La problématique de la captation par les États des réseaux structurant ces espaces et des flux économiques qui leur sont propres va de pair avec les politiques de police des mers et des déserts, contre des populations présentées comme des pirates, mais qui n’en sont souvent que d’autres usagers. L’ouvrage vise à articuler des pratiques historiographiques aussi diverses que l’archéologie, l’histoire des migrations et de l’environnement, l’histoire des sciences, la géohistoire ou l’histoire des représentations, autour d’une approche inédite de la mer et du désert, en prise avec des problématiques contemporaines.

    Description: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

Mais au-delà du souvenir que ce matériel préservé peut susciter chez le public, ces collections techniques constituent un fonds de premier ordre pour approfondir notre connaissance de l’histoire des chemins de fer. Encore faut-il pouvoir localiser, identifier et interpréter ces objets et documents de natures variées. Dans cet ouvrage, Lionel Dufaux nous invite à découvrir le corpus ferroviaire de l’une des plus anciennes et importantes collections techniques du monde, au musée du Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. Créé pendant la Révolution française par la Convention, le Conservatoire devait réunir les objets, modèles, dessins, descriptions et livres utiles au perfectionnement de l’industrie nationale. Très vite, à l’aube du xixe siècle, l’institution s’est intéressée aux chemins de fer qui émergeaient alors outre-Manche. Les collections rassemblées depuis les années 1820 forment aujourd’hui un ensemble exceptionnel et sont de précieux témoignages de la naissance du chemin de fer en Europe, de son développement géographique et technique. Mais au-delà de l’histoire matérielle, c’est bien la question de la transmission des savoirs, gestes et pratiques techniques, et les mécanismes de diffusion de l’innovation qui transparaissent, offrant une nouvelle lecture de l’histoire des chemins de fer, éclairée de manière originale par des collections restées largement méconnues.
