Description: The book sheds new light on a much debated issue in the field of ancient history: the spread of Christianity in the Roman Empire and its relationship with Judaism in the 2nd century. The contributions collected in this volume illustrate from a multidisciplinary perspective (including archaeology, cultural, religious, and political history) how Christianity found a peculiar way of integrating into the transforming empire under Emperor Hadrian. In this way, Christianity gained an increasing place within Roman society, which ultimately opened the door to its affirmation in subsequent centuries.

Description: Like ancient Rome, the medieval metropolis on the Tiber is also a landscape of transmission due to the diversity of its epigraphic legacy. This legacy had a lasting impact on the municipal area of the urbs and provides contemporary researchers with information about the practices of communication that developed in the city. This volume examines this multifaceted medieval epigraphic culture with help from new methodological impulses.

Description: Gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. This book analyzes the mapping of gods through a specific lens: their naming. By proposing this new perspective, it sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Names and spaces enable to better define, differentiate, and connect gods.

Description: This book deals with the historical development of a group of four Spanish adjectives and adverbs: preciso / precisamente, justo / justamente, exacto / exactamente and cabal / cabalmente. Based on large historical corpus data-samples, this study combines quantitative and qualitative analysis with semasiological and onomasiological approaches and its focus lies on the diachronic development of three discourse functions (focussing, affirmation and reformulation). The results are discussed with reference to current theories of language change (grammaticalization, pragmaticalization, thetical grammar and cooptation) and explanatory factors such as analogy and changes in frequency.

Description: Livio Odescalchi (1652–1713), nephew of Innocent XI, paid the price in his youth for the pope’s anti-nepotism policy, who chose to deny him any official position. During the same period, Livio had to submit to the oppressive control of his uncle, his testamentary guardian – an unhappy situation that, at the time, caused him to be considered a symbol of misfortune. In spite of this, the young man was able to lay the foundations for a strategy of economic and social ascent that would later bear fruit. After the death of Innocent XI, a period of compensation began, built on the accumulation of honours and possessions, financial investments, commissions and art trades, patronage, social celebrations, and international networks. This book, based on Roberto Fiorentini’s doctoral thesis (Aprilia 1987 – Washington 2019), examines both phases of Livio Odescalchi’s life, analysing them in the light of a considerable quantity of archival documents, some of which are completely unpublished.
