Dabei verknüpft sie nicht nur rassismuskritische, postkoloniale und sozioökonomische Dimensionen des Unbehagens, sondern nimmt auch Bezug auf die spezifisch-historischen Lebenserfahrungen in der DDR und der (Nach-)Wendezeit.

In ihrer rassismustheoretischen Analyse entwickelt Veronika Kourabas die heuristischen Konzepte Ge-Brauch und Ver-Brauch, um Rassismus als paradoxes Ungleichheitsverhältnis zu erfassen. ›Gastarbeit‹ wird dadurch als Ge-Brauchsverhältnis greifbar, das Migrationsandere ökonomisch einbezieht, aber über rassistisch vermittelte Diskurse zugleich ausschließt. Mit diesen Ansätzen sowie der Rekonstruktion widerständiger Praktiken wird nicht nur die Analyse und Kritik vergangener, sondern auch gegenwärtig dominanter Diskurse über Flucht und Migration eröffnet.

Bisherige Analysen öffentlicher Debatten zum Islam in Europa haben gezeigt, dass Fragen der Geschlechtergleichstellung im Vordergrund stehen und muslimische Frauen häufig Bilder kollektiver Differenz markieren. Mirjam Aeschbach legt anhand einer detaillierten Analyse aktiver Medienbeiträge muslimischer Diskursakteurinnen von 2016 bis 2019 dar, wie diese in der Öffentlichkeit Bilder nationaler Zugehörigkeit aufgreifen und sich aneignen - und wie diese Bilder so potentiell in Frage gestellt werden.

    Description: Perhaps unexpectedly, English travel writing during the long eighteenth century reveals a discourse of global civility. By bringing together representations of the then already familiar Ottoman Empire and the largely unknown South Pacific, Sascha Klement adopts a uniquely global perspective and demonstrates how cross-cultural encounters were framed by Enlightenment philosophy, global interconnections, and even-handed exchanges across cultural divides. In so doing, this book shows that both travel and travel-writing from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries were much more complex and multi-layered than reductive Eurocentric histories often suggest.

Der rassifizierte Feind erscheint hier als Gefahr für das deutsche Volk und die deutsche Frau. Es wird deutlich: Ziel dieses Narrativs ist nicht die Rettung eines - selbst in den Augen der Neurechten rein illusionären - deutschen Volkes, sondern die Zementierung von Grenzen und Verachtung.

Nele Austermann deckt auf, wie fehlende Jurisdiktion, mangelnde völkerrechtliche Verantwortlichkeit internationaler Organisationen und eine eingeschränkte Menschenrechtsbindung hierbei zu einer Entsubjektivierung von Migrant*innen führen. Mit dem Konzept der internationalen öffentlichen Gewalt zeigt sie einen Weg auf, wie eine Rückführung in komplexitätsadäquate rechtliche Strukturen möglich ist.

Lorenz Narku Laing analysiert die posthomogene Gesellschaft und zeigt, dass rassistische Politiken zum Kerngeschäft der Verfechter*innen der Homogenität gehören. Seine postkoloniale Kritik untersucht die tieferliegenden Gründe hierfür und liefert zugleich eine kritische Intervention in die (politik-)wissenschaftliche Forschung. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Rassismus weit mehr ist als Diskriminierung und Benachteiligung: Rassismus ist eine politische Ideologie.

    Description: Die Aufnahme Tausender »Fremder« im Sommer 2015 wurde medial euphorisiert als »deutsches Wunder« beschrieben. Die Geflüchteten selbst tauchten in dieser Perspektive kaum auf. Dem Narrativ der »Willkommenskultur« folgte ein Wechselbad der Diskurse hin zum drohenden Staatsversagen, der Belastungsgrenze oder sexueller Übergriffe. Dabei ging es primär um die Befindlichkeit der Nation und der »Flüchtling« wurde zum Verursacher nationaler Bedrängnisse. Uwe Becker analysiert diese Diskurse und zeichnet nach, welche Narrative sich im »langen Sommer der Flucht« aufgebaut haben. Dabei zeigt er auf, wie sie im kollektiven Gedächtnis ruhen, jederzeit aktivierbar sind und bis heute eine restriktive Flüchtlingspolitik legitimieren.

    Description: Fugitive Borders explores a new archive of 19th-century autobiographical writing by black authors in North America. For that purpose, Nele Sawallisch examines four different texts written by formerly enslaved men in the 1850s that emerged in or around the historical region of Canada West (now known as Ontario) and that defy the genre conventions of the classic slave narrative. Instead, these texts demonstrate originality in expressing complex, often ambivalent attitudes towards the so-called Canadian Promised Land and contribute to a form of textual community-building across national borders. In the context of emerging national discourses before Canada's Confederation in 1867, they offer alternatives to the hegemonic narrative of the white settler nation.

Diese Betrachtungen nehmen sie im Anschluss an raumtheoretische Überlegungen vor, die Raum als relationalen Vollzugsort von Teilhabe entfalten. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass Teilhabe je situativ in der Auseinandersetzung mit vielfältig bestehenden Barrieren ausgehandelt wird - und es vielfältiges Potenzial gibt, bislang ausgeschlossenen Personen Teilhabemöglichkeiten zu eröffnen.

Auf der Spurensuche nach kulturellen Bedeutungszusammenhängen ebenso wie nach alltäglichen Lebensstrategien wird eine kreative Verschränkung von kleinen und großen Erzählungen und ethnologischen Interpretationen und Analysen hergestellt. Im Ergebnis wird mit zahlreichen Klischees über Heiratsmigrantinnen aufgeräumt.

Das feine Geflecht der hier erzählten und sensibel interpretierten Lebensgeschichten gibt Raum für die Reflexionen der Befragten über ihr Verhältnis zu den eigenen Eltern, zur Ehefrau, zu den Kindern und zu ihrem Leben in »zwei Heimaten«. Damit liefert die Arbeit einen Schlüssel zu einem besseren Verständnis der Männer dieser Migrantengeneration, die vor fast einem halben Jahrhundert das Wagnis auf sich genommen haben, sich und ihren Familien in einem fremden Land eine Zukunft aufzubauen.

Das Eigene nicht.« Diese Auffassung resümiert die Erfahrungen einer Gruppe junger Erwachsener aus einem deutsch-chilenischen Raum in Chile. Es handelt sich dabei um Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund, also Angehörige einer kulturellen Minderheit, die aber im lateinamerikanischen Kontext aufgrund ihrer Beziehung zu Europa nicht marginalisiert werden, sondern vielmehr eine positive Diskriminierung erfahren. Dies verändert die Diskussion über hybride Identitäten und kulturelle Zwischenräume und ermöglicht einen erweiterten Blick auf Migration, Kultur und Identität.

    Description: This volume puts an emphasis on the question how children themselves experience and manage migration and by means of which they construct an identity for themselves which takes into account their experiences from both their places of origin and their host societies. What role does the cultural background of the society of origin on the one hand and the strategies of integration found in the host society on the other play in the creation of identity and of a concept of home, origin and belonging? How do children express processes of cultural orientation and integration (music, media, fashion, style) and what role do peer groups and social milieus play in this regard? How do migrant children experience xenophobia and a lack of acceptance on the side of the host society and how do they counter-balance such experiences? The approach taken is both comparative and interdisciplinary, the contributors having different theoretical and methodological backgrounds, the contributions dealing with different social and cultural settings both with regard to place of origin and host society.
