Description: As the worldwide remaining carbon budget decreases rapidly, countries across the globe are searching for solutions to limit greenhouse gas emissions. As the production and use of coal is among the most carbon-intensive processes, it is foreseeable that coal regions will be particularly affected by the consequences of a transformation towards a climate-neutral economy and energy system. Challenges arise in the area of energy production, environmental protection, but also for economic and social aspects in the transforming regions - often coined with the term "Just Transition". For the decision makers in coal regions, there is an urgent need for support tools that help to kick off measures to diversify the local economies while at the same time supporting the local workers and communities. The Wuppertal Institute aims to support coal regions worldwide by developing a Just Transition Toolbox, which illustrates the challenges and opportunities of a sustainable transition for a global audience. It comprises information about strategy development, sets recommendations for governance structures, fostering sustainable employment, highlights technology options and sheds light on the environmental rehabilitation and repurposing of coal-related sites and infrastructure. The toolbox builds on the work of the Wuppertal Institute for the EU Initiative for Coal Regions in Transition and takes into account country-specific findings from the SPIPA-partner countries India, Indonesia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Canada and the USA. The acronym SPIPA is short for "Strategic Partnerships for the Implementation of the Paris Agreement" an EU-BMU programme co-financed by the GIZ.

Description: Die nachhaltigkeitsorientierte Transformation von urbanen Räumen ist eine akute Herausforderung. In den letzten Jahren haben koproduktive, experimentelle, transdisziplinäre und häufig informelle Stadtwandelprojekte als Such- und Lösungsräume hohe Sichtbarkeit erlangt. Schlüsselakteure hierfür stellen - so die These - Verwaltungsvertreter:innen einer integrierten Stadtentwicklung und -planung, Wissenschaftler:innen einer transformativen Forschung sowie zivilgesellschaftliche Stadtmacher:innen dar. Die Autor:innen, verankert in diesen drei Gruppen, kritisieren die häufig nur situative Zusammenarbeit dieser drei Akteursgruppen. Ein Modell der Zusammenarbeit im Spannungsfeld zwischen Gemeinsamkeiten, jeweiligen Potentialen und herausfordernden Eigenlogiken der Akteurssysteme wird entwickelt. Darauf aufbauend wird vorgestellt, wie durch strategischen Trialog und reflexive Lernprozesse die Zusammenarbeit verbessert und die Wirksamkeit koproduktiven und experimentellen Stadtwandels erhöht werden kann.

Description: Die aktuellen Berichte des Weltklimarates (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC) und des International Resource Panel zeigen erneut die Dringlichkeit einer umfassenden sozial-ökologischen Transformation auf. Das bedeutet, dass die Umsetzung der "Agenda 2030", welche im Jahr 2015 durch die Vereinten Nationen beschlossen wurde, als ein international geltendes Maßnahmenprogramm zur Umsetzung einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung gesetzt und ihr ein zentraler politischer Stellenwert zugeordnet werden muss. Das SDG 12 "Nachhaltige Konsum- und Produktionsmuster sicherstellen" setzt die besondere Rolle nachhaltiger Produktions- und Konsummuster als Ausgangspunkt für eine Klima- und Ressourcenwende und Generationen- sowie soziale Gerechtigkeit. Der Zukunftsimpuls formuliert zehn Botschaften zur Umsetzung von SDG 12 "Nachhaltige Konsum- und Produktionsmuster sicherstellen" als Ausgangspunkt einer großen Transformation. Es beleuchtet kurz und knapp vielfältige Handlungsvoraussetzungen als auch Akteurinnen und Akteure, die relevant für die Verwirklichung einer nachhaltigen Zukunft sind. Der Zukunftsimpuls thematisiert unter anderem die Vorbildfunktion des Staates, die Chancen, die sich auf kommunaler Ebene bieten und die internationale Perspektive, welche sich durch globale Kooperationen und stetigen Wissens- und Erfahrungsaustausch auszeichnen sollte. Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf nachhaltiger Produktion und nachhaltigem Konsum. Dies lässt sich durch die Stärkung des Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstseins und der -kompetenz sowie der Schaffung von ausreichend Gelegenheiten erreichen, damit einer dynamisch wachsenden Gruppe nachhaltiges Produzieren und nachhaltiger Konsum ermöglicht wird. Ziel ist daher die Bildung eines politischen und gesetzlichen Rahmens, welcher nachhaltige Lebensstile als auch nachhaltige Produktions- und Dienstleistungssysteme begünstigt, fördert und als Daseinsvorsorge sieht. Um die Entwicklung und Fortschritte zu sichern, bedarf es neuer Indikatoren und regelmäßiger Monitorings, die Handlungslücken in Realzeit aufdecken und das Schließen der Lücken ermöglichen. Die Umsetzung des SDG 12 benötigt einen Rahmen, der von Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft getragen wird.

Description: Die global gesehen größte Gesundheitsbedrohung des 21. Jahrhunderts ist der Klimawandel. Krankenhäuser müssen sich zwangsläufig vermehrt mit den Folgen des Klimawandels auseinandersetzen, wenn neue Krankheitserreger aus fernen Ländern auftreten oder wenn ältere Menschen, chronisch Kranke, Kinder oder anderweitig besonders betroffene Menschen an heißen Tagen mit bislang unerreichten Hitzerekorden dehydrieren mit der Folge von Herzkreislaufproblemen. Eine Untersuchung des Robert Koch-Instituts kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass allein in den drei Sommern zwischen 2018 und 2020 in Deutschland über 19.000 Menschen aufgrund der Hitze gestorben sind. Der Gesundheitssektor trägt aber auch wesentlich zur Klimakrise bei, indem er selbst für einen erheblichen Teil der klimaschädlichen Emissionen verantwortlich ist. Dieser Wuppertal Report zeigt einen Weg, wie Krankenhäuser perspektivisch Teil der Lösung der derzeit größten Transformationsherausforderung werden können. Dabei sind Krankenhäuser ein Mikrokosmos der Gesellschaft. In ihnen spiegelt sich förmlich alles, was das Leben einer Gesellschaft hinsichtlich der Herausforderung des Klimaschutzes ausmacht: Strom- und Wärmeversorgung, Mobilität, Ernährung, Ressourcenverbrauch und Abfall. Der vorliegende Wuppertal Report macht deutlich, dass Krankenhäuser als Reallabore des bevorstehenden Transformationsprozesses, hin zu einer klimagerechten und ressourcenleichten Gesellschaft verstanden werden können. Das für die Krankenhausgesellschaft Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V. (KGNW) entwickelte Zielbild Klimaneutrales Krankenhaus gibt Krankenhäusern umsetzungsorientierte Hinweise darauf, wie sie sich auf den Weg zur Klimaneutralität begeben können: Es identifiziert klimaschutzrelevante Handlungsfelder im Betrieb. Es verdeutlicht, wie die KGNW die Krankenhäuser in NRW auf ihrem Weg in Richtung Klimaneutralität unterstützen kann. Es motiviert, Klimaschutz als wichtiges Unternehmensziel aktiv anzugehen.

Description: To limit global warming, the use of carbon capture and storage technologies (CCS) is considered to be of major importance. In addition to the technical-economic, ecological and political aspects, the question of social acceptance is a decisive factor for the implementation of such low-carbon technologies. This study is the first literature review addressing the acceptance of industrial CCS (iCCS). In contrast to electricity generation, the technical options for large-scale reduction of CO2 emissions in the energy-intensive industry sector are not sufficient to achieve the targeted GHG neutrality in the industrial sector without the use of CCS. Therefore, it will be crucial to determine which factors influence the acceptance of iCCS and how these findings can be used for policy and industry decision-making processes. The results show that there has been limited research on the acceptance of iCCS. In addition, the study highlights some important differences between the acceptance of iCCS and CCS. Due to the technical diversity of future iCCS applications, future acceptance research must be able to better address the complexity of the research subject.

Description: Sufficiency measures are potentially decisive for the decarbonisation of energy systems but rarely considered in energy policy and modelling. Just as efficiency and renewable energies, the diffusion of demand-side solutions to climate change also relies on policy-making. Our extensive literature review of European and national sufficiency policies fills a gap in existing databases. We present almost 300 policy instruments clustered into relevant categories and publish them as "Energy Sufficiency Policy Database". This paper provides a description of the data clustering, the set-up of the database and an analysis of the policy instruments. A key insight is that sufficiency policy includes much more than bans of products or information tools leaving the responsibility to individuals. It is a comprehensive instrument mix of all policy types, not only enabling sufficiency action, but also reducing currently existing barriers. A policy database can serve as a good starting point for policy recommendations and modelling, further research is needed on barriers and demand-reduction potentials of sufficiency policy instruments.

Sie arbeiten heute schon für ein gutes Leben in und mit der Natur, und sie erzählen von einem anderen Morgen. MORGEN werden Lebensmittel wertvoll sein, wenn ihre Herstellung die Bodenfruchtbarkeit erhöht und das Wasser schützt. Davon können auch kleine Initiativen und Betriebe gut leben. Sie werden von einer Verwaltung unterstützt, die sich in der ökologischen Landwirtschaft gut auskennt. All das wird möglich, weil die Politik sich etwas traut. MORGEN wird der Wald vielfältig sein und kann sich selbst verjüngen. Denn er muss nicht mehr liefern, was Handwerk und Industrie brauchen, weil diese nun nehmen wollen, was der Wald kann. Die Politik hat verstanden, dass Wald in Verbindung mit Boden und Wasser ein elementares Gut ist. MORGEN werden die kleinen Energiewenden einfach zu verwirklichen sein. Neben klugen Kopplungen und Netzen gibt es regionale Eigenversorgung, und die mit der Herstellung von Strom und Wärme verbundene Wertschöpfung kommt den Gemeinden und Kommunen zugute. Die vielen kleinen Transformationen brauchen eine große Transformation - für eine friedliche, nachhaltige west-östliche Zukunft.

Description: To address climate change, the decarbonisation of Germany's existing building stock urgently needs to be prioritised. However, the rate and depth of refurbishment has lagged behind official targets for years. This is a particular problem in the rental sector, where the costs and benefits of energy efficiency measures tend to be unevenly distributed between landlords and tenants (the so-called "landlord-tenant dilemma"). Within the context of the current policy landscape, investments in energy efficiency consequently make most sense for landlords if the upfront costs can be refinanced via increased rental income or reduced vacant periods. This paper seeks to investigate the validity of this statement at city level by using a large dataset from one of Germany’s main internet property platforms to examine how the willingness of tenants to pay for energy efficiency varies across residential locations in the city of Wuppertal. The small-scale spatial analysis highlights the existence of a price premium for energy efficiency in the rental market for apartments; however, this premium is generally small (especially in comparison to other property enhancements, especially visible improvements) or even non-existent in some residential areas. Consequently, investing in energy efficiency is rarely an attractive option for landlords. Therefore, strong policy action, aligned with social and urban development policy objectives, is necessary to establish an effective incentive structure in the market and make investing in energy efficiency more attractive for both landlords and tenants.

Description: A growing number of transformative research practices that redefine the role of science in engaging with local - mostly urban - transformation processes have emerged in recent decades. However, while education is considered a key driver for sustainability transformations, higher education has been slow to develop and implement dedicated, appropriate and effective transformative education programmes and learning modules. In this paper, we present a framework of design principles for transformative learning modules in higher education. These principles are derived from two growing discourses: higher education sustainability learning, and transdisciplinary and transformative research - both of which are centrally anchored in the field of sustainable development and sustainability science. The principles presented provide guidance for course leaders in higher education to create learning modules aimed at enabling students to become engaged in transdisciplinary and transformative research that fosters sustainability transitions in local and urban contexts. We use the Transformative Innovation Lab (TIL) - a learning course developed and tested at two German universities - as an example of how the design principles can be applied. The module, which runs over two semesters, supports Masters students in their process of developing real-world laboratories and exploring urban sustainability transitions through collaborative experimentation with local practice partners. We discuss the factors that enable and limit the implementation of transformative learning modules and outline aspects of the novel roles adopted by lecturers in transformative teaching environments. Moreover, we highlight the need for both institutional change and transformative teaching formats that go beyond transformative research as key for driving universities to take responsibility for collaboratively fostering sustainability transitions in their local contexts.

Description: Deutschland liegt bei Klimaschutz und der langfristigen Sicherung der Energie- und Rohstoffversorgung weit hinter seinen eigenen Zielen. Nur mit Tempo, Mut und Ehrlichkeit lässt sich der Rückstand jetzt aufholen. Dazu gehören ein beschleunigter Ausbau erneuerbarer Energien, ein sofortiger Aufbau eines umfassenden Netzes für grünen Wasserstoff, verbindliche Ziele für eine echte Kreislaufwirtschaft, klare Vorgaben für den Wohnungsbestand, eine ernsthafte Mobilitätswende und wirksame Anreize für eine nachhaltige Produktion. Bei all dem müssen sozial gerechte Lösungen gefunden werden, nur so lässt sich CO2-Vermeidung und Ressourcenschutz in der Breite durchsetzen. Das vorliegende Impulspapier des Wuppertals Instituts zeigt, wie sehr Deutschland auf dem Weg zur Nachhaltigkeit seinen eigenen Zielen hinterherhinkt.

Description: Urban transitions and transformations research fosters a dialogue between sustainability transitions theory an inter- and transdisciplinary research on urban change. As a field, urban transitions and transformations research encompasses plural analytical and conceptual perspectives. In doing so, this field opens up sustainability transitions research to new communities of practice in urban environments, including mayors, transnational municipal networks, and international organizations.

Description: The European Landscape Convention urges countries to involve stakeholders including citizens in the governance of ordinary (urban) landscapes. This paper studies conflicting stakeholder perspectives on urban landscape quality in the context of urban sustainability transitions in six European urban regions in the Netherlands, Italy, France, Croatia, Belarus and the Russian Federation. Repertory grid technique helped to identify the dimensions through which persons evaluate urban landscape quality. Ninety-three (93) interviewees elicited 1400 bipolar constructs, such as "Edible green - Concrete" or "Community, group - Loneliness". They then selected two constructs they consider most relevant in the context of urban sustainability transitions, and ranked all pictures on a 10-points scale. The rankings were analyzed using Multiple Correspondence Analysis. We find that, in spite of the many social and cultural differences between the regions, stakeholders largely agree on the preferred direction of urban transitions; more green and blue spots where people can meet and undertake joint (leisure) activities. The main conflict is between, on the one hand, a preference for organized development and beautification and, on the other hand, naturalness (permeability of soil) and organic development. The paper considers several challenges for transition governance.

Description: Energiesparen ist durch den Krieg in der Ukra­ine das Gebot der Stunde, um uns unabhängig von russischen Energieträgern zu machen; vor Kriegsbeginn spielte dieses Thema keine allzu große Rolle in der breiteren politischen Diskus­sion. In Szenarien und Strategien, wie mittel­- und langfristige Klimaziele erreicht werden könnten, gewann das Thema Energiesparen durch Ener­giesuffizienz in den vergangenen Jahren hinge­gen immer mehr an Bedeutung, wobei die tech­nischen Strategien Effizienz und Konsistenz, also die Umstellung auf erneuerbare Energien, noch immer maßgebend sind. In diesem Beitrag zeigen wir, welche Rol­le das Senken des Energieverbrauches spielt, um Klimaziele zu erreichen, und warum dies eine ge­eignete Möglichkeit ist, multiple Krisen gleich­zeitig zu lösen. In Hinblick darauf ist Energie­suffizienz unabdingbarer Bestandteil möglicher Lösungsstrategien. Außerdem skizzieren wir, welche kurz­, mittel­- und langfristigen Politikin­strumente derzeit diskutiert werden, und ergän­zen dies um weitere Ideen zu Einsparpotenzialen sowie um Umsetzungsbeispiele.

Neben der Herstellung von Versorgungssicherheit müssen die durch stark steigende Energie- und Lebensmittelpreise entstehenden sozialen Härten abgefedert werden. Um diese Aufgabe bestmöglich zu bewältigen, bedarf es eines politischen Instruments, das notwendige Veränderungen der Lebens- und Wirtschaftsweise ermöglicht und soziale Belastungen in den Krisen auffängt. Mit Blick auf diese Problemstellung werden in diesem Wuppertal Report bereits vorhandene politische Instrumente, deren Mittel nicht zweckgebunden verwendet werden müssen, einer SWOT-Analyse unterzogen und erste Ideen für ein sogenanntes Transformationsgeld vorgestellt, das die Mehrdimensionalität der derzeitigen Problemlage berücksichtigt. Das Transformationsgeld ist als zweckungebundene staatliche Transferleistung konzipiert, um die Freiheit der Konsument*innen nicht einzuschränken und Preiseffekte nicht zu nivellieren. Die Höhe der Transferleistung hängt von der ökonomischen Situation des Haushalts ab und soll nicht nur eine Kompensation der Mehrkosten darstellen, sondern gesellschaftliche Teilhabe ermöglichen. Abseits des Transformationsgelds liefert die Kurzstudie auch eine Einschätzung der Autor*innen, was aus ihrer Sicht kurzfristig gegen die bestehenden Probleme getan werden sollte.

Description: Since the middle of the 20th century, human society experiences a "Great Acceleration" manifesting in historically remarkable growth rates that create severe sustainability problems. The globally exploding potentials of information and knowledge exchange have been and are vital drivers for this acceleration. Society has now come to the point that it requires a "Great Transformation" towards sustainability to ensure the viability of the planet for a vital society. The energy transition plays a central role for this transformation. In this context, human society has developed a comparably good understanding of the necessary infrastructural changes of this transition. For transforming the patterns of energy production and use in an energy transition as part of the "Great Transformation", this process of change now needs to strengthen its focus on information, communication, and knowledge systems. Human society needs to establish a knowledge system that has the potential to create usable knowledge for sustainability solutions. This requires organizing a communication system that is sufficiently complex, interconnected, and, at the same time, efficient for integrating reflexive, open-ended, inter- and transdisciplinary learning, evaluation, and knowledge co-production processes across multiple levels. This challenge opens a wide field of research. This cumulative dissertation contributes to research in this direction by applying a systemic sustainability perspective on the content and organization of communication in the field of research on sustainable energy and the operational level of municipal climate action as part of the energy transition. Regarding sustainability, this thesis uses strong sustainability and its principles as a frame for evaluating the content of communication. Regarding the systemic perspective, the thesis particularly relies on the following theories: (i) the human-environment system model by R. Scholz as an overarching framework regarding interactions between humans and nature, (ii) social systems theory by N. Luhmann to reflect the complexity of society, (iii) knowledge management to consider the human character of knowledge and a practice-oriented perspective, and (iv) management cybernetics, in particular, the Viable System Model by S. Beer as a framework to analyze and assess organizational structures. Furthermore, the thesis leverages the potential of text mining as a method to identify and visualize patterns in texts that reflect prevalent paradigms in communication. The thesis applies the above conceptual and methodological basis in three case studies. Case Study 1 investigates the measures proposed in 16 municipal climate action plans of regional centers in Lower Saxony, Germany. It uses a text mining approach in the form of an Summary interpretation network analysis. It analyzes how different societal subsystems are connected at the semantic level and to what extent sustainability principles can be recognized. Case Study 2 analyzes and reflects paradigms and discursive network structures in international scientific publications on sustainable energy. The study investigates 26533 abstracts published from 1990 to 2016 using a text mining approach, in particular topic modeling via latent Dirichlet allocation. Case Study 3 turns again to the cases of municipal climate action in Lower Saxony examined in Case Study 1. It examines the involvement of climate action managers of these cities in multilevel knowledge processes. Using design principles for knowledge systems, it evaluates to what extent knowledge is managed in this field across levels for supporting the energy transition and to what extent local innovation potential is leveraged or supported. The three case studies show that international research on sustainable energy and municipal climate action in Germany provide promising contributions to achieve a transformation towards sustainability but do not fully reflect the complexity of society and still support a growth paradigm, in contrast to a holistic sustainability paradigm. Further, the case studies show that research and local action are actively engaging with the diversity of energy technologies but are lagging in dealing with the socio-epistemic (communication) system, especially with regard to achieving cohesion. Using the example of German municipalities, Case Studies 1 and 3 highlight the challenges of achieving coherent local action for sustainability and bottom-up organizational learning due to incomplete or uncoordinated multilevel knowledge exchange. At the same time, the studies also point out opportunities for supporting the required coherent multilevel learning processes based on local knowledge. This can be achieved, for instance, by strengthening the coordinating role of intermediary organizational units or establishing closer interactions between the local operational units and the national level. The thesis interprets and synthesizes the results of the three case studies from its systemic sustainability perspective. On this basis, it provides several generalized recommendations that should be followed for establishing viable communication systems, especially but not exclusively in policy-making: Systemic holism: Consider matter, energy, and information flows as an integrated triplet in the context of scales, structures, and time in the various subsystems. Knowledge society: Focus on the socio-epistemic (communication) system, e.g., using the perspective of knowledge systems and associated design principles considering, for instance, working environments across horizontal and vertical levels, knowledge forms and types, and knowledge processes. Sufficiency communication: Emphasize sufficiency approaches, make it attractive, and find differentiated ways for communicating them. Multilevel cohesion and innovation: Achieve cohesion between the local and higher levels and leverage local innovations while avoiding isolated local action. Organizational interface design: Define the role of organizational units by the interactions they create at the interfaces with and between societal subsystems. Local transdisciplinarity: Support local transdisciplinary approaches integrating various subsystems, especially industry, while coordinating these approaches from a higher level for leveraging local innovation. Digital public system: Exploit existing digital technologies or infrastructures in the public system and recognize the value of data in the public sphere for achieving cohesion. Beyond the above recommendations, this thesis suggests that potential for further research lies in: Advancing nature-inspired systemic frameworks. Understanding the structure and creation of human knowledge. Developing text mining methodologies towards solution-oriented approaches.

Description: The transdisciplinary research mode has gained prominence in the research on and for sustainability transformations. Yet, solution-oriented research addressing complex sustainability problems has become complex itself, with new transdisciplinary research formats being developed and tested for this purpose. Application of new formats offers learning potentials from experience. To this end, we accompanied fourteen research projects conceptualized as real-world labs (RwLs) from 2015 to 2018. RwLs were part of a funding program on "Science for Sustainability" in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Here, we combine conceptual and empirical work to a structured collection of experiences and provide a comprehensive account of RwLs. First, we outline characteristics of RwLs as transformation oriented, transdisciplinary research approach, using experiments, enabling learning and having a long-term orientation. Second, we outline eleven success factors and concrete design notes we gained through a survey of the 14 RwLs: (1) find the right balance between scientific and societal aims, (2) address the practitioners needs and restrictions, (3) make use of the experimentation concept, (4) actively communicate, (5) develop a "collaboration culture", (6) be attached to concrete sites, (7) create lasting impact and transferability, (8) plan for sufficient time and financial means, (9) adaptability, (10) research-based learning, and (11) recognize dependency on external actors. Characteristics and success factors are combined to illustrate practical challenges in RwLs. Third, we show which methods could be used to cope with challenges in RwLs. We conclude discussing the state of debate on RwLs and outline future avenues of research.

Description: Practices of urban experimentation are currently seen as a promising approach to making planning processes more collaborative and adaptive. The practices develop not only in the context of ideal-type concepts of urban experiments and urban labs but also organically in specific governance contexts. We present such an organic case in the city of Wuppertal, Germany, centred around a so-called change-maker initiative, "Utopiastadt." This initiative joined forces with the city administration and collaborated with a private property owner and the local economic development agency in an unusual planning process for the development of a central brownfield site. Ultimately, the consortium jointly published a framework concept that picked up the vision of the "Utopiastadt Campus" as an open-ended catalyst area for pilot projects and experiments on sustainability and city development. The concept was adopted by the city council and Utopiastadt purchased more than 50% of the land. In order to analyse the wider governance context and power struggles, we apply the social-constructivist theory of Strategic Action Fields (SAFs). We focused on the phases of contention and settlement, the shift in interaction forms, the role of an area development board as an internal governance unit and the influences of proximate fields, strategic action, and state facilitation on the development. We aim to demonstrate the potential of the theory of SAFs to understand a long-term urban development process and how an episode of experimentation evolved within this process. We discuss the theory's shortcomings and reflect critically on whether the process contributed to strengthening collaborative and experimental approaches in the governance of city development.

Description: Wissenschaft und Bildung sind zentrale Felder und ein Hebel für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung. Mit dem neu entwickelten studentischen Lehr- und Lernformat "Transformative Innovation Lab" - kurz TIL - sollen Studierende dazu befähigt werden, selbstständig transformativ zu forschen. Dazu entwickelten und testeten die Forschenden unter Leitung des Wuppertal Instituts im Projekt "Entwicklung, Erprobung und Verbreitung neuer Qualifizierungsangebote für "Change Agents" zu transformativem Lernen am Beispiel Reallabore" (EEVA) das neue Lernkonzept. Die detaillierten Ergebnisse und zahlreiche Tipps zur Umsetzung haben die Projektbeteiligten in dem vorliegenden Praxis-Handbuch zusammengefasst, das sich an Lehrpersonen sowie weitere Multiplikatorinnen und Multiplikatoren richtet.

Description: Die Transformation des Wirtschaftens, wie sie der Green New Deal vorsieht, steht vor einem vierfachen Risiko: Dies bezieht sich auf die Transformationstiefe, den wissenschaftlichen und politischen Androzentrismus, die Gender-Mainstreaming-Gebote und die nötige Effektivität und Akzeptabilität der Transformation. Die hier dargelegte These ist, dass es unverzichtbar ist, im Transformations-Konzept selbst die strukturellen Ursachen von Ungleichheiten geschlechtergerechtigkeitswirksam zu adressieren. Wie am Beispiel der Verkehrswende gezeigt wird, ist dies die Voraussetzung dafür, ökonomisch-sozial-ökologische Zusammenhänge zu erkennen und die Klima-, Ressourcen- und ökonomischen Krisen entsprechend politisieren zu können.

Etablierte Wirtschaftsförderung beschränkt sich meist auf klassische gewerbliche Unternehmen und strebt nach Wettbewerbsfähigkeit und Wachstum. Das Konzept der Wirtschaftsförderung 4.0 geht darüber hinaus und betrachtet die gesamte Wirtschaft einer Stadt oder Region. Es ergänzt die klassischen Strategien und zielt darauf ab, lokale und regionale Wirtschaftsstrukturen zu stärken. Auch private und öffentliche Haushalte, Vereine und soziale Initiativen werden dabei berücksichtigt. Wirtschaftsförderung 4.0 initiiert so neue Wertschöpfung vor Ort, eröffnet lokale Investitionsmöglichkeiten, bindet regionale Kaufkraft, entfaltet neue Wirtschaftsideen, fördert Kooperationen und stärkt lokale Vielfalt. Zudem fördert sie Ressourcengerechtigkeit und Klimaschutz. Description: Umweltschutz und Nachhaltigkeit bestimmen seit Jahren die öffentlichen Debatten sowie zunehmend das Handeln privater Haushalte. Eine Mehrheit geht davon aus, dass die Bedeutung nachhaltigen Handelns weiter wachsen wird. Allerdings fällt es vielen anscheinend schwer, nicht nur nachhaltig zu denken, sondern auch zu handeln. Eine Studie des Wuppertal Instituts in Zusammenarbeit mit eBay Kleinanzeigen zeigt diese Diskrepanz. Deutlich werden auch Unterschiede im Konsumverhalten jüngerer und älterer Menschen. Dennoch: Immer mehr Menschen tragen aktiv zum Klimaschutz bei und kaufen oder verkaufen beispielsweise gebrauchte Artikel. Nahezu jeder hat hierzulande bereits einmal etwas Gebrauchtes verkauft. Jeder Zweite hat bereits einmal Gebrauchtes gekauft. Ungeachtet dessen liegen in deutschen Haushalten durchschnittlich rund 1.300 Euro in Form ungenutzter Dinge und verborgener Schätze.

Description: 2011 trat der Nawis-Verbund mit dem Vorhaben an, transdisziplinäre Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaft institutionell zu etablieren und einen Wandel im Wissenschaftssystem anzustoßen. Damit verbunden ist die neu gedachte Wissenschaftspraxis der transformativen Forschung, die eine analytische Komponente und einen normativen Auftrag umfasst.

Description: Citizen science is a transdisciplinary approach that responds to the current science policy agenda: in terms of supporting open science, and by using a range of science communication instruments. In particular, it opens up scientific research processes by involving citizens at different phases; this also creates a range of opportunities for science communication to happen This article explores methodological and practical characteristics of citizen science as a form of science communication by examining three case studies that took different approaches to citizens' participation in science. Through these, it becomes clear that communication in citizen science is "always" science communication and an essential part of "doing science".

Description: Die großen Transformationsprozesse im 21. Jahrhundert werden sich insbesondere in den Städten entscheiden. Sie sind technologischer, ökonomischer, institutioneller und insbesondere kultureller Schmelztiegel für Veränderungsprozesse. Um sich aus bestehenden Pfadabhängigkeiten zu lösen, bedarf die urbane Transformation sowohl kraftvoller Zukunftserzählungen als auch Experimentierorte, an denen diese Zukünfte heute schon in einer Stadt erlebbar werden. Für beides kann die enge Kooperation mit der Wissenschaft in der Stadt ein zentraler Katalysator sein. "Urbane Reallabore" sind dabei ein geeignetes Format, um eine neue Kooperationskultur zwischen Wissenschaft und Stadt zu schaffen - mit einem gemeinsamen Blick auf die Gestaltung urbaner Zukünfte.

With the newly developed student teaching and learning format "Transformative Innovation Lab" - TIL for short - students are to be enabled to conduct independent transformative research. To this end, the researchers, under the direction of the Wuppertal Institute, developed and tested the new learning concept in the project "Development, testing and dissemination of new qualification offers for 'change agents' for transformative learning using the real-world laboratory approach" (EEVA). The detailed results and numerous implementation tips have been published in a practical handbook aimed at academic teaching staff and other multipliers.

Mittels eines mixed-Methods-Ansatz und auf Basis von Medien-, öffentlichen und selbst erhobenen Daten wird darin ein umfassendes Bild der Quartiersentwicklung von 2007 bis Anfang 2020 gezeichnet.

Description: Dieses von Mitgliedern des Arbeitskreises "Postwachstumsökonomien" (2016 - 2020) der ARL verfasste Positionspapier ordnet die internationale Postwachstumsdebatte ein und diskutiert ihre Relevanz für die Raumentwicklung und die raumwissenschaftliche Forschung. Neben sektoralen Zugängen und Befunden werden konkrete Vorschläge zur Postwachstumsorientierung in Planung, Forschung und Lehre gemacht. Dabei wird zwischen kurzfristig erreichbaren Veränderungen und mittel- bis langfristig auszulegenden Maßnahmen unterschieden.

Description: Wie können Menschen befähigt werden, ihr Lebensumfeld entsprechend den eigenen Bedürfnissen und Wertvorstellungen zu gestalten? Das war die zugrunde liegende Fragestellung des Dortmunder Projekts "Psychologisches und kommunales Empowerment durch Partizipation im nachhaltigen Stadtumbau" (DoNaPart). Im Zentrum des Projekts stand die Initiierung eines urbanen Reallabors in dem Soziale Stadt Programmgebiet Westerfilde/Bodelschwingh, innerhalb dessen ein nachhaltiger Transformationsprozess in den Bereichen Energie, Mobilität und Konsum entworfen und durchgeführt wurde.

Description: Wir stehen heute vor dem Klimaproblem. Das zu lösen ist seit mehr als 30 Jahren unsere Aufgabe. Dazu braucht es eine weltweite Energiewende. Politisch sind zwei global koordinierte Anläufe gemacht worden - und beide gescheitert. Gegenwärtig wird der dritte Versuch unternommen. Das zweimalige Scheitern ist nicht verwunderlich angesichts der Verfasstheit der globalen Politik. Gibt es eine Alternative? Die Antwort ist: ja, die technologische. Die vermag sich dank wirtschaftlicher Vorteilhaftigkeit von alleine durchzusetzen.

Description: Digitalisation is disrupting business practices worldwide and transforming consumption patterns. While a global increase in wealth is leading to higher consumption rates, consumption-related decisions are increasingly based on digital information and marketing; furthermore, shopping increasingly takes place online and products and services are more and more digitalised. The transformative character of digitalisation calls for political action in order to ensure sustainable consumption in a new and dynamically changing context. Focusing on consumption is imperative in combatting many global challenges. Take climate change: consumption-based emissions (i.e. emissions from domestic final consumption and emissions caused by the production of imported goods) are rising more rapidly than production-based emissions in high-income countries. Meanwhile most political measures target production-based emissions (i.e. territorial emissions). The German council for sustainable development (Rat für Nachhaltige Entwicklung) has called for the §principle of sustainable development [to] serve as the political framework for digital transformation" as "digitalisation has the potential to engender disruptive developments in the business world as well as society as a whole that carry both great opportunities and significant risks". Thus, to implement the 2030 Agenda, in particular SDG 12, and the National Program Sustainable Consumption, it is key to seize the opportunities that digitalisation presents for sustainable consumption and tackle the challenges. This assessment report thus examines the following key question: "What are the implications of the digital transformation of consumption patterns for the implementation of the German sustainability strategy in, by and with Germany?"

Description: For achieving a transition towards sustainable development, central importance is attached to science and education, and especially higher education. Suitable formats are needed for empowering students to perform transformative research. On the basis of transdisciplinary and transformative real-world laboratory research and futures studies, we develop encompassing learning and teaching module: the Transformative Innovation Lab (til). The lab builds on insights into five key competencies and three types of knowledge needed for developing socially robust sustainability innovations. In this paper, the main features of this experiential and reflexive format are presented and linked to a handbook for facilitating the lab. Central learnings for implementing the format in existing study programmes from two test runs at two German universities are shared and discussed.

Description: Dem humorvoll skeptischen Blick auf den Zeitgeist zeigt sich ein seltsames Bild: Es scheint eine Zeit der Wenden ohne wirkliche Wende zu sein. So lange schon wird von "Wende" geschrieben und gesprochen, dass inzwischen beispielsweise in Verbindung mit Energie von alter (1980er-Jahre) und von neuer (2010er-Jahre) Energiewende die Rede ist. Viele Wenden sind in deutscher Sprachmanier zusammengesetzte Substantive und beziehen sich - von der Mobilitäts- über die Konsum- und die Agrar- bis hin zur Waldwende - auf ökologische Probleme. Manchen Wenden ist ein Adjektiv beigefügt, das eine Strömung im politisch-ökonomischen Raum beschreibt, so etwa die neoliberale Wende in der Sozialpolitik. Meist wird im Kontext der Ökologie konstatiert, dass die Probleme zwar bekannt, die eingeleiteten Wendestrategien und Wendemaßnahmen aber völlig unzureichend seien. Daher schlägt Benedikt Schmid eine "kritische Wende" vor. Die wachstums- und fortschrittsgebundenen Denkmuster gelte es aufzubrechen. Sie seien beharrlich und würden sich immer wieder auch in den zeitlichen und räumlichen Vorstellungen alternativer Ansätze einnisten. (1) Das Forschungsprojekt VorAB ("Vorsorgend handeln - Avantgardistische Brückenansätze für nachhaltige Regionalentwicklung") fragt nach strukturellen Hindernissen für nachhaltige Regionalentwicklung und nach Potenzialen fortschrittlicher Ansätze zu fairer Land- und Ressourcennutzung. (2) Es untersucht die Transformationsfelder Wald-, Energie- und Landwirtschaft in der Region Lübeck. Erste Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei dem Terminus Wende mit Blick auf qualitative und grundlegende Veränderungen Vorsicht geboten ist.

Description: To which extent do happiness correlates contribute to the stability of life satisfaction? Which method is appropriate to provide a conclusive answer to this question? Based on life satisfaction data of the German SOEP, we show that by Negative Binomial quasi-maximum likelihood estimation statements can be made as to how far correlates of happiness contribute to the stabilisation of life satisfaction. The results show that happiness correlates which are generally associated with a positive change in life satisfaction, also stabilise life satisfaction and destabilise dissatisfaction with life. In such as they lower the probability of leaving positive states of life satisfaction and increase the probability of leaving dissatisfied states. This in particular applies to regular exercise, volunteering and living in a marriage. We further conclude that both patterns in response behaviour and the quality of the measurement instrument, the life satisfaction scale, have a significant effect on the variation and stability of reported life satisfaction.

Description: Die Grenzen des Verkehrswachstums sind erreicht. Klimaschutz und Lebensqualität sind wichtiger als hochgerüstete Autoflotten, die für Millionen Menschen ohne Auto Belastungen und Mobilitätsnachteile bedeuten. Notwendig ist eine radikale sozial-ökologische Transformation des Verkehrssystems: Ausbau und Förderung des Umweltverbundes aus ÖPNV, Schiene, Sharing-Systemen, Rad- und Fußverkehr - das sind bekannte Strategieelemente, die aber durch die herrschende Privilegierung des Autos ausgebremst werden. Dabei hat das Leitbild der autogerechten Stadt längst ausgedient. Entfesselte Automobilität frisst immer mehr Natur und Lebensqualität. Ziel muss es sein, nachhaltige Mobilität zu sichern, Verkehrsgerechtigkeit zu schaffen und die Hälfte der Autoflotte überflüssig zu machen. Und die Zukunft ist bereits unterwegs. Längst planen viele Städte eine menschengerechtere Mobilität: in Paris, Kopenhagen, Freiburg und anderswo. Unterstützt durch eine engagiertere Verkehrspolitik von Bund und EU, kann aus der kommunalen Verkehrsbewegung eine nachhaltige Mobilität für alle in Stadt und Land werden. Neue grüne Geschäftsfelder und gute Arbeit für moderne Mobilitätsdienstleistungen sind dabei Kernelemente. Mit den riesigen Maßnahmenprogrammen wegen der Corona-Pandemie und für den Klimaschutz kann ein gestaltender Staat die Chancen der Verkehrswende erschließen. Für dieses Gemeinschaftswerk können Wählermehrheiten gewonnen werden.

Description: Reallabore werden in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Kontexten eingerichtet, um Lösungen für Probleme der urbanen Transformationen zu erproben. Sie sind vornehmlich in der transformativen Nachhaltigkeitsforschung verankert und spiegeln einen experimental turn in den Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften wider: Traditionelle wissenschaftliche Forschungsmethoden stoßen demnach angesichts immer komplexerer Veränderungen und Anforderungen an die Gesellschaft beispielsweise beim Umgang mit dem Klimawandel an ihre Grenzen. Daher sollen in Reallaboren Akteure aus Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft gemäß dem transdisziplinären Paradigma, das dem Reallabor-Konzept zugrunde liegt, eng und "auf Augenhöhe" zusammenarbeiten. Reallabore sollen Evidenz über sozial robuste Lösungsstrategien für gesellschaftliche Probleme generieren. Zentrale methodische Grundlage sind (Real-)Experimente, welche eine Brücke vom "Wissen zum Handeln" schlagen. Verstanden als dauerhafte "Forschungsinfrastruktur" ist die Forschung in Reallaboren im Idealfall langfristig anzulegen und als beständiger Reflexions- und Lernprozess zu konzipieren. Reallabore reihen sich damit ein in internationale "Lab"-Debatten, wie z. B. um "Sustainable Living Labs", "Urban Transition Labs" oder "Niche Experiments".

Description: In current German debates on sustainable urbanisation and urbanism, new urban actors reviving buildings, brownfields or whole neighbourhoods are discussed as potential drivers of urban transformation towards sustainability as well as potential co-producers for conventional actors in urban development and planning. These actor's projects can be understood as spatially confined niches for experimentation with (built) urban space itself. Building upon the concepts of niche entrepreneurship (Pesch et al., 2017) and the framework of strategic action field theory (Fligstein & McAdam, 2011; 2015), we ask how these actors secure support for their projects and how these projects in turn are altered in this process. Based upon a case study from Wuppertal, Germany, we show that in struggling for support of powerful actors, these actors often have to significantly compromise, and that these compromises can be understood as contextualisation in the project's spatial and institutional environment.

Das gilt für die Wirtschaft ganz genauso wie für die Gesellschaft. Nichts scheint mehr so zu sein wie früher, Krisenprävention und gesellschaftlicher Zusammenhalt scheinen heute eine ganz andere Bedeutung zu haben.

Description: Consumption by private households in various areas of demand - housing, mobility, nutrition, services and products - contributes to around 10 % of total emissions in Germany. Of this, higher-income households are responsible for a disproportionate share. At the same time, many households often lack the knowledge, time, or motivation to deal with their own energy-relevant and climate-impacting behaviours. In this context, energy advice services play an important role for raising awareness, activating consumers and imparting knowledge about available options for action. However, conventional energy advice services are mostly limited to the topics of building and appliance energy efficiency - especially for middle- and high-income households - without considering private consumption behaviour and the related social practices as a whole. In practice, there has been little differentiation to date in addressing target groups in a way that takes into account different lifestyles and realities and the underlying values and motivations in a pluralistic society. The present paper presents a methodological approach to develop targeted energy advice approaches in urban environments that are oriented towards the motivations of different types of households with medium and high incomes. It proposes a three-step approach consisting of 1) a microdata-based population analysis to identify and categorize target subgroups, 2) an inventory of existing advice offers with regard to their coverage and approach and 3) a gap analysis based on the results of the preceding steps. Applied to a large city in Germany, the analysis finds that gaps are rarely found with regard to communicated facts but rather the way in which information is conveyed. Accordingly, recommendations relate to more effectively use windows of opportunity and framing of measures to match target group motivations.

Wirtschaftsförderung 4.0 wirkt sich damit positiv aus auf den Stadtwohlstand und erhöht die Attraktivität für eine Stadt der kurzen Wege, der Diversität und des guten Lebens. Zugleich erhöht eine Stabilisierung der regionalen und lokalen Wirtschaft die Widerstandsfähigkeit der lokalen Ebene gegen weltweite Krisen. Die "Wirtschaftsförderung 4.0" ergänzt die klassischen Strategien der etablierten Wirtschaftsförderung. Nach und nach hat sich das Handlungsspektrum um die Bereiche Bestandspflege, Clustermanagement und Kreativwirtschaft erweitert. Zahlreiche Maßnahmen der Wf4.0 sind hier bereits verankert. So etwa die Förderung von Nachhaltigen Unternehmen. In dem Projekt wurde untersucht, inwiefern sich der gegenwärtige Leistungskatalog der Wirtschaftsförderung sinnvoll erweitern lässt.

Description: In dem vorliegenden Beitrag analysieren Maike Venjakob und Oliver Wagner die Verteilungswirkungen steigender Energiekosten auf private Haushalte. Sie betrachten dafür die Kosten für Strom, Heizenergie und Kraftstoffe. Sie vergleichen auch die Auswirkungen des CO2-Preises und verschiedene Maßnahmen für eine soziale Ausgestaltung, wie beispielsweise eine Pro-Kopf-Pauschale (auch Klimadividende, Klimabonus oder Energiewendebonus genannt), die in gleicher Höhe an alle Bürger*innen ausgezahlt wird. Ganz wesentlich wird sich die tatsächliche Belastung daran bemessen, inwieweit in den nächsten Jahren klimafreundliche Alternativen, beispielsweise in der Mobilität oder bei der Wärmeversorgung, geschaffen werden. Im Rahmen einer Kurzanalyse wird deshalb beleuchtet, mit welchen zusätzlichen Belastungsfaktoren für private Haushalte durch die Einführung der CO2-Bepreisung von Heizenergie und Kraftstoffen in den kommenden Jahren zu rechnen sein wird und welche Ausgleichsmechanismen soziale Härten zielgenau verhindern können.

Description: The target of zero emissions sets a new standard for industry and industrial policy. Industrial policy in the twenty-first century must aim to achieve zero emissions in the energy and emissions intensive industries. Sectors such as steel, cement, and chemicals have so far largely been sheltered from the effects of climate policy. A major shift is needed, from contemporary industrial policy that mainly protects industry to policy strategies that transform the industry. For this purpose, we draw on a wide range of literatures including engineering, economics, policy, governance, and innovation studies to propose a comprehensive industrial policy framework. The policy framework relies on six pillars: directionality, knowledge creation and innovation, creating and reshaping markets, building capacity for governance and change, international coherence, and sensitivity to socio-economic implications of phase-outs. Complementary solutions relying on technological, organizational, and behavioural change must be pursued in parallel and throughout whole value chains. Current policy is limited to supporting mainly some options, e.g. energy efficiency and recycling, with some regions also adopting carbon pricing, although most often exempting the energy and emissions intensive industries. An extended range of options, such as demand management, materials efficiency, and electrification, must also be pursued to reach zero emissions. New policy research and evaluation approaches are needed to support and assess progress as these industries have hitherto largely been overlooked in domestic climate policy as well as international negotiations.

Description: Cities and municipalities have had to endure a great deal in recent years, including a global coronavirus pandemic, fire disasters in the US and devastating floods like those in Germany. These are also consequences of anthropogenic climate change, and cities have to be better prepared for such events in future. In particular, the cata-strophic flooding Germany experienced in July 2021 demonstrated how ill-equipped municipalities are for this type of incident. In this paper, we look at how cities can become more resilient, sustainable and ready for the future.

Description: Nutrition is one of the most important areas for the great transformation. So how can a shift towards a sustainable food system be achieved? This paper addresses this question - based on more than ten years of research on sustainable nutrition at the Wuppertal Institute. It focuses on public catering, because even small changes - for example in the choice of ingredients - have a huge impact here. With appropriate policy frameworks, public catering can serve as an easily accessible place for consumers to experience sustainable food and at the same time be a reliable buyer of biodiversity and climate-friendly food from farmers. However, other actors are also needed for a transformation of the food system: The "Zukunftsimpuls" addresses politics, (agricultural) industry, science and every individual - because the transformation of the food system is a task for the entire society.

Eine nachhaltige Entwicklung, die zugleich Umweltschonung, stabile wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung sowie soziale Gerechtigkeit berücksichtigt, beruht damit auf der Kompetenz oder auch der "Literacy" der Einzelnen, für sich und im Kollektiv nachhaltiges Handeln auszuüben und im gegenseitigen Miteinander fördern zu können. Doch welche Fähigkeiten sind notwendig, um nachhaltig Handeln zu können? Welche Fähigkeiten brauchen insbesondere Konsumentinnen und Konsumenten, um ihre Produktions- und Konsummuster nachhaltiger (mit-)gestalten zu können? Antworten darauf liefert die "Literacy für nachhaltigen Konsum", die in dem vorliegenden Diskussionspapier entwickelt und vorgestellt wird.

Description: Der hier vorliegende Zukunftsimpuls soll den Grundgedanken der Transformativen Innovationen und ihre Notwendigkeit beschreiben sowie erste Kandidaten für solche Transformativen Innovationen aus diversen Arbeitsbereichen des Wuppertal Instituts vorstellen. Er dient vor allem als Einladung, gemeinsam mit dem Wuppertal Institut über solche Innovationen zu diskutieren, die irgendwo zwischen den großen Utopien und kleinen Nischenaktivitäten liegen. Denn es braucht nicht immer den ganz großen Wurf, um Veränderungen in Gang zu setzen.

Der vorliegende Zukunftsimpuls setzt sich mit dieser Frage auseinander - basierend auf über zehn Jahren Forschung zu nachhaltiger Ernährung am Wuppertal Institut. Einen Schwerpunkt setzt das Papier auf die Außer-Haus-Gastronomie, denn bereits kleine Umstellungen - etwa in der Zutatenauswahl - haben hier große Wirkung. Mit geeigneten Rahmenbedingungen kann die Außer-Haus-Gastronomie den Konsumierenden als leicht zugänglicher Erlebnisort für nachhaltigere Ernährung dienen und gleichzeitig Landwirtinnen und Landwirten ein zuverlässiger Abnehmer für biodiversitätsschonende und klimafreundliche Lebensmittel sein. Doch für eine Transformation des Ernährungssystems sind auch andere Akteure gefragt: Der Zukunftsimpuls adressiert Politik, (Land-)Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und jeden und jede Einzelne - denn die Transformation des Ernährungssystems ist eine gesamtgesellschaftliche Aufgabe.

Description: Urban development faces numerous challenges in the 21st century and a central task is the sustainable and liveable design of the city. Can the concept of a Smart City be a tool to making cities more liveable and sustainable? To find out, we chose a biographical method to analyse the steps towards a successful Smart City and to better understand the structures behind it. We combine the innovation biography method with a process model from sustainability governance research, namely Steurer's sustainability governance model and apply them to Vienna's Smart City, especially the preparation of the Vienna Smart City framework strategy (Steurer & Trattnigg, 2010). On the one hand, this article shows that a transfer of the innovation biography method to urban research can generate deeper insights on urban development processes in general. On the other hand, the approach chosen can show that Vienna integrates the sustainable urban design into the process of Smart City design. So the smart and sustainable city design, often called for in theoretical contributions, is practised in Vienna. Due to its reconstructive character, the biographical method has revealed that it is possible to govern sustainability by using Smart City as an umbrella strategy, as long as one manages it in an integrated and holistic way, recognises trends and is able to acquire and use research funds effectively and efficiently. The knowledge gained from the new method for urban and Smart City research is twofold. Firstly, the transfer of the method previously developed in the human sciences and subsequently for organisations, institutions and products and services also works in urban research. Second, the innovation biography provides in-depth insights into the process towards the Smart City and the stakeholders involved. The use of the biographical method highlights the relevance of good governance in terms of interdisciplinary cooperation on the one hand and high political commitment on the other through the micro-level perspective and is also sensitive enough to highlight the importance of an appropriate narrative in and for the process towards the Smart City.

Description: Schools play an important role in achieving climate protection goals, because they lay the foundation of knowledge for a responsible next generation. Therefore, schools as institutions have a special role model function. Enabling schools to become aware of their own carbon footprint (CF) is an important prerequisite for being able to tap the substantial CO2 reduction potential. Aiming at the direct involvement of students in the assessment process, a new assessment tool was developed within the Schools4Future project that gives students the opportunity to determine their own school's CF. With this instrument the CO2 emissions caused by mobility, heating and electricity consumption as well as for food in the school canteen and for consumables (paper) can be recorded. It also takes into account existing renewable energy sources. Through the development of the tool, not only a monitoring instrument was established but also a concrete starting point from which students could take actions to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. This paper presents the tool and its methods used to calculate the CF and compares it with existing approaches. A comparative case study of four pilot schools in Germany demonstrates the practicability of the tool and reveals fundamental differences between the GHG emissions.

Wie verbessern wir die Balance zwischen den Marktgütern und den marktfreien Gütern, die heute so stark gefährdet erscheint? Marktfreie Güter wie menschliche Zuwendung, selbstbestimmte Lebensführung, gesellschaftliche Integration und soziale Verantwortlichkeit sind nicht zu kaufen. Sie werden in Familie und Gruppe, in Nachbarschaft und bürgerschaftlichem Engagement hervorgebracht. Und sie sind nötiger denn je - zumal in den städtischen Räumen. Ausgehend von empirischen Untersuchungen, zeichnen die Autoren die Ansätze und Perspektiven einer Tätigkeitsgesellschaft, in der sich Erwerbs- und Subsistenzwirtschaft produktiv ergänzen.

Das sind auch Folgen des menschen-gemachten Klimawandels, auf die Städte sich in Zukunft besser vorbereiten müssen. Denn gerade die Hochwasser-Katastrophe im Juli 2021 hat gezeigt, wie wenig Kommunen auf solche Ereignisse eingerichtet sind. Dieses Impulspapier zeigt, wie Städte resilienter, nachhaltiger und zukunftsfähiger werden können.

Description: Quantitative environmental assessments are crucial in working effectively towards sustainable production and consumption patterns. Over the last decades, life cycle assessments (LCA) have been established as a viable means of measuring the environmental impacts of products along the supply chain. In regard to user and consumption patterns, however, methodological weaknesses have been reported and, several attempts have been made to improve LCA accordingly, for example, by including higher order effects and behavioural science support. In a discussion of such approaches, we show that there has been no explicit attention to the concepts of consumption, often leading to product-centred assessments. We introduce social practice theories in order to make consumption patterns accessible to LCA. Social practices are routinised actions comprising interconnected elements (materials, competences, and meanings), which make them conceivable as one entity (e.g. cooking). Because most social practices include some sort of consumption (materials, energy, air), we were able to develop a framework which links social practices to the life cycle inventory of LCA. The proposed framework provides a new perspective of quantitative environmental assessments by switching the focus from products or users to social practices. Accordingly, we see the opportunity in overcoming the reductionist view that people are just users of products, and instead we see them as practitioners in social practises. This change could enable new methods of interdisciplinary research on consumption, integrating intend-oriented social sciences and impact-oriented assessments. However, the framework requires further revision and, especially, empirical validation.

Description: At the heart of transition research lies the question of how to "scale up" sustainable alternatives from a protected niche to the creation of mainstream practices. While upscaling processes are often seen as an essential element that contributes to societal transformation, upscaling itself remains a fuzzy concept. We argue that some fundamental dilemmas of upscaling can be identified, for example, the different understanding of the concept by researchers and practitioners. The dilemmas should be addressed in a more reflexive way by those from the worlds of science and practice who are involved in collaborative research settings.

Description: We conducted a random allocation experiment at fashion week in Berlin in 2017, testing how face-to-face (f2f) communication affects sales of a fashion start-up focusing on second-hand. The experiment revealed that 11% of guests of an f2f event afterwards turned paying customers with an average basket size 11.8% higher than the overall sales event average. We add insights to research on entrepreneurial practice as well as on offline operations in the context of circular consumption in fashion, exposing the leveraging effect of f2f communication for customer acquisition and revenue of start-ups in the field of sustainable fashion.

Description: Businesses like Airbnb have shown that a successful circular economy (CE) business can operate exclusively online. Although online communication and web appearance attributes have been subject to academic research given accelerated digitization, there is still a lack of knowledge about online attributes and their role in facilitating CE. We close the portrayed knowledge gap by conducting a discrete-choice experiment with best to worst scaling and focusing on the effect of CE experience on the perception of a CE website by ranking nine online attributes, grouped in three subsets. We therefore contribute by identifying online attributes that are perceived as favorable for CE businesses and detect how participation in CE activities affects the perception of these attributes. We find that third-party associated online attributes (e.g., user reviews or third-party guarantees) rank significantly higher throughout CE consumption patterns of the sample, being always amongst the top three attributes. This novel finding on online preferences opens a new direction for further research, as well as allows practitioners to optimize online operations accordingly. Furthermore, we find that users without prior touchpoints with CE have a higher need for information about the business model as compared to CE active users who are more interested in community related attributes.

Description: This research project approached the emergence of social business innovations from the periphery, working towards the core: the first article features the representation of the concept of Social Business City, which was newly implemented by Wiesbaden in 2010. Here, social businesses are to be founded with the help of a network based on both public and private institutions. At the time of conducting the research, three such Social Business Cities existed: Wiesbaden (Germany), Fukuoka (Japan) and Pistoia (Italy); in 2016 Barcelona joined the list of Social Business Cities. The second article analyses the ways in which microfinance organisations that are based on the concept of social business according to Yunus differ from one another. Included in this research was Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, Social Business Women in Germany and Grameen America in the United States. Subsequently, a third article investigates the similarities and differences to be found between social businesses and charities. The research focuses on advantages and disadvantages on both sides and aims at answering the questions: which approach is appropriate under what circumstances and which aspects could be adopted by the other? Finally, we investigated the various cooperation of the Grameen Group with global players such as Danone, Veolia and Intel in Bangladesh and the particular challenges which result therefrom.
