    Description: This study investigates the pictorial world of the medieval Vadstena Abbey church. The interior of the church was filled with altars and images that had the three separated groups of viewers in mind: the 60 nuns, the 25 conventual brothers and the numerous pilgrims coming to visit the shrine of Saint Birgitta. The pilgrims faced a pictorial message where the role of saint Birgitta was emphasized, but still one among all the other saints. The images directed to the nuns and the brothers accentuated the role of the Virgin Mary as the exemplarily follower of Christ. Furthermore, all the church interior was furnished to enhance the position of the nuns, i.e. that this monastic foundation was made primarily for women.

Management, faculty, assistants and counselors, pupils, parents and carers are all seen as important partners in education and upbringing. The basis of this partnership is mutual trust and belief in a common goal – the development of the educational potential and personality of each student. The school, which manages to build a positive climate, thus provides a pleasant environment in which all actors feel good and are themselves interested in participating in the life of the school. The publication is based on the best practice of schools in the Czech Republic. We convey their experiences, the challenges they faced and the ways in which they dealt with them. The Summary contains interesting ideas, tips for specific activities and proven measures.

In dit essay onderzoeken José van Dijck en Wim van Saarloos, president en vicepresident van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, hoe ons kleine land in de wetenschap groot kon worden.     Description: Title in English: 3A Procedure: Instrument for Reflection and Evaluation of Instruction 3A procedure – designation for the methodological procedure of reflection and qualitative analysis of teaching, which is associated with the evaluation of the quality of teaching and the proposal of improving changes. The concept of 3A methodology follows the tradition of didactic analysis focused on the content of education as developed in the didactic approach of W. Klafki (1967). The idea here is that the teacher first reflects on the question “what will I teach / what will the pupils learn” and derives the choice of teaching practices, i.e. “how will I teach / how will the pupils go about learning”, from the answer to this question. The method of research on teaching presented here is intended to meet the needs of teachers first and foremost by addressing the questions that teachers actually have to address when they prepare lessons, when they work with pupils in them, and when they reflect on ways to improve them. The book will offer teachers the opportunity to engage with research findings and to put them into practice.

    Description: Title in English: Towards the Inclusive School: Interaction and Norm Inclusion is not deepening integration. It is a comprehensive response to the transformation of the contemporary world, which takes seriously the fact that diversity is its defining essence. The monograph presents the results of three years of research, from which it follows that well-implemented inclusion positively transforms the atmosphere, teaching methods, and academic outcomes of mainstream schools. Thanks to its principles of inclusion, it frees the educational system from the ideology of the middle class, which, contrary to its own rhetoric, is based on a hierarchical system and favors sameness over the difference. Valuing diversity opens up space for the essential value of a democratic society – the development of the educational potential of each of its members according to their possibilities, needs, and interests while building strong social cohesion and resilience.

    Description: Narratives about northern Sweden are often narratives about nature. This has been true throughout history and is still true today. Different ways of understanding nature have become intertwined with the place and the people who live there. The nature in northern Sweden can be magnificent and impressive, but it can also be desolate, threatening and dangerous. A dominant image of nature in northern Sweden - then as now - is the image of resources, assets. The overall aim of the study is to shed light on the role of nature in linguistic place-making in northern Sweden with a particular focus on the settler colonization during the 18th and 19th centuries. Through a selection of text sources, nature’s central place in the story of the colonization, of the place, its history, change and future is highlighted. The texts that are analyzed are the two journals in which Petrus Læstadius described his work as a missionary in Lapland, as well as Olov Petter Pettersson's detailed description of the settler colonization in the work Gamla byar i Vilhelmina. The settler colonization took place in areas with Sami presence and history and this study connects to the research field of Settler Colonial Studies in a critical discussion of the linguistic place-making in the texts. One of the aims of the study is to also shed light on the connections that exist between the settler colonization depicted in the texts, and the linguistic place-making with nature at the center that is ongoing in northern Sweden today.

    Description: During the 1920s and 1930s the wordless novel – stories told in black-and-white wordless woodcuts – was established as a narrative genre. The genre was most popular in Germany, but was as well known in other parts of Europé and in the US. The wordless novel was characterized by the absence of words, the use of woodcut and other relief printing techniques, as well as themes of social critique and serious existential issues. The purpose of the book is to - through the wordless novels of the 1920s and 30s - explain the uniqueness of the wordless narrative and thus the autonomous narrative possibilities of the image. The method of the examination is a close reading of the German artist Otto Nückel's wordless novel Schicksal (Destiny 1926). A comparative material consists of the Czech artist Helena Bochořáková-Dittrichova's wordless novel Z Mého Dětství (From My Childhood, 1929). Wordlessness is studied through the image's characteristics as an intermediary of messages and narratives and through comparisons with other expressions - the silent film, cirkus, expressionist dance and visual art, as well as medieval woodcuts. Narratives – which are usually put together by verbal communication – are in this project a tool for seeing: the image sequences or the image groups that ""replace"" the words - not as a lack or implied meaning of words, but as a personal visual story.

    Description: Among the literature aimed at students of art science and other image-interpreting sciences are a number of texts that deal with theories and theoretical concepts. However, what is largely missing, and which students often call for, are texts in Swedish that show how theories and concepts can be applied in concrete interpretation situations. The series Theoretical applications in art science aims to fill that gap, with the book Materiality being the fourth in the series. The book introduces and activates a concept that in recent decades has come to take an increasingly important place in humanistic research. Art scholars - but also archaeologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, ethnologists and other humanistic researchers - are increasingly interested in the material conditions for, and the manifestations of, people's social and cultural life and exchange. But despite its topicality in today's scientific conversation, the concept of materiality can seem elusive and elusive. It moves all the way from the most tangible analyzes of the material components of a cultural artefact, to the somewhat impenetrable theorizations of objectivity, agents and networks that are usually sorted under the label ""new materialism"". However, the book Materialitet gives concrete examples of how the concept of materiality can open up interpretations of important layers of meaning in works of art and other cultural artifacts. After the initial introduction where different perspectives and conceptualisations of materiality are discussed, six researchers each do their own analysis based on their subject area. The chapters are based on new research and are written specifically for this book. The different chapters together show the multifaceted nature of the concept of materiality, but do not lock it down to a definition, but open the eyes to a number of different interpretive paths.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

    Description: This anthology is a conclusion of the research results from a four-year VR project called Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland - a holistic study of a World Heritage (2014–2017). Decorative painted interiors and furniture as well as patterned interior textiles during 1700–1870 have been investigated with a combination of methods from both the humanities and the natural sciences. The purpose has been to obtain new and in-depth knowledge of paint, dyes and other raw materials and techniques used in the manufacture of artefacts and interiors in the farmhouses in this region. Through the study, an increased understanding of the local availability of paint material and the trade at that time has been obtained. In addition, detailed knowledge of the originators of the interiors has been generated. The project thus adds new knowledge for further investigation of cultural, social and economic contexts and conditions for the interior design culture that emerged and was formed in Hälsingland farms during the 18th and 19th centuries.

    Description: "Historical research into disasters and disaster processing has expanded enormously in recent years. The threat of climate disasters and pandemics is raising awareness that disasters have a major impact on community development. The period 1755-1918 also saw numerous disasters that affected Dutch society, such as the Leiden gunpowder disaster of 1807, several cholera outbreaks and large-scale river floods. Volcanic eruptions and flooding were recurring phenomena in the colonies. And then there were major international disasters, such as the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 and the Spanish flu in 1918. Crisis and Catastrophe examines the influence of these catastrophes on belief in God, solidarity and charity, and local and national identity formation. Attention is also paid to the cultural representation of disasters in literature, paintings and memorial books."

    Description: This report examines how education can contribute to the prevention of radicalization and polarization of young people. The starting point was to link up with identity development in adolescence and developing social competences in education. By better to match the identity needs of young people, possible radical thoughts are steered towards positive political or social involvement. This approach has been underexposed to date in research and also insufficiently present in existing policy strategies for education
    Description: In dit rapport is nagegaan hoe het onderwijs kan bijdragen aan het voorkomen van radicalisering en polarisatie van jongeren. Het uitgangspunt was om daarbij aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsontwikkeling in de adolescentie en het ontwikkelen van sociale competenties binnen het onderwijs. Door beter aan te sluiten bij de identiteitsbehoeften van jongeren kunnen eventuele radicale gedachten worden bijgestuurd naar positieve politieke of maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Deze benadering is tot op heden onderbelicht gebleven in onderzoek en ook onvoldoende aanwezig in bestaande beleidsstrategieën voor het onderwijs

    Description: In the spring of 2019, 3355 Dutch students in group 6 of primary education from 112 schools participated in eTIMSS-2019. TIMSS stands for Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study and measures worldwide developments in knowledge and skills in science and in attitudes of students who have completed four or eight years of formal education. The 'e' of eTIMSS refers to the digital administration of the test. In the Netherlands, group 6 students took the 2019 TIMSS test on a tablet. The students have been tested in mathematics and science (biology, physics and chemistry and physical geography). The present report reports on the outcomes of TIMSS-2019 in the Netherlands. The remainder of this chapter describes the structure of TIMSS-2019.

De ‘e’ van eTIMSS verwijst naar de digitale afname van de toets. In Nederland hebben groep 6 leerlingen de TIMSS-toets van 2019 op een tablet gemaakt. De leerlingen zijn getoetst in rekenen-wiskunde en natuuronderwijs (biologie, natuur- en scheikunde en fysische aardrijkskunde). In het voorliggende rapport wordt verslag gedaan van de uitkomsten van TIMSS-2019 in Nederland. Het resterende deel van dit hoofdstuk beschrijft de opzet van TIMSS-2019.

    Description: The research reported in this publication concerns the second sub-study of the project Administrative Power and the Effect of Professionalisation Incentives in Secondary Education. This sub-study focuses on the various incentives that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and organisations affiliated with OCW (for instance NRO, the Inspectorate and DUO, VO-raad, the Education Council and collective agreements) give to various actor groups in education. The aim is to maintain and improve the professional competencies of those actor groups. Incentives' is another word for professionalisation policy instruments (PBIs) and these can be categorised as PBIs arising from legislation or regulations, PBIs of a financial nature and PBIs intended to entice professionalisation activities through communication. For each PBI aimed at secondary education, the actor(s) targeted and the nature of the incentive were identified. For comparison with secondary education, this has also been done for PBIs in PO and MBO. To gain more insight into the familiarity, use, effectiveness and possible side effects, experts were interviewed and asked to fill in a digital questionnaire. Finally, a focus group meeting was held to discuss our findings in more detail on the basis of various propositions.
    Description: Het onderzoek brengt de stand van zaken met betrekking tot bestuurlijk vermogen en professionalisering in het voortgezet onderwijs in kaart. We doen dat door verschillende opeenvolgende deelstudies. We gaan door secundaire analyses na in hoeverre besturen voor voortgezet onderwijs van elkaar verschillen in gerealiseerde onderwijskwaliteit. Door literatuurstudie en interviews met deskundigen schetsen we vervolgens welke professionaliseringprikkels in het voortgezet onderwijs voorkomen en waar ze toe leiden. De kern van ons onderzoek bestaat uit een combinatie van een surveyonderzoek met (verkennende en verdiepende) casestudies. We onderzoeken in hoeverre besturen beschikken over bestuurlijk vermogen, hoe ze reageren op externe professionaliseringsprikkels en hoe ze interne professionalisering vormgeven. We analyseren de relaties tussen bestuurlijk vermogen, professionalisering en onderwijskwaliteit en gaan de invloed na van bestuurlijke kenmerken. Door expertmeetings met vertegenwoordigers van beleid, praktijk en wetenschap komen we uiteindelijk tot breed gedragen aanbevelingen voor het verbeteren van het voortgezet onderwijs.

    Description: Sociale gelijkheid is goed voor iedereen. Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik, criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch) en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van onszelf te verbeteren. Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven, is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én het voorkomen van ongelijkheid. De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien. De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook nieuwe kennisvragen. In de verschillende bijdragen staan grootstedelijke vraagstukken centraal: over wonen, mobiliteit, duurzaamheid, onderwijs, radicalisering en arbeidsparticipatie. De casussen komen vaak uit Amsterdam, maar zijn mondiaal relevant, ze spelen in alle wereldsteden. Hoe stimuleren we een bloeiende creatieve economie en houden we tegelijkertijd de middenklasse en de laaggeschoolden in de stad? Hoe ontwikkelen we de stad met oog voor ongelijkheid tussen bevolkingsgroepen in zowel (woon) ruimte als inkomen? Hoe doen we dat op een duurzame manier?     Description: Title in English: Why education and its actors fail : Cognitive landscapes and nationalism. Why education reforms are often unsuccessful? Why is the school environment essentially toxic and systemically hindering the education process? Why, despite the sincere efforts of enlightened headmasters and teachers to change the face of the school, is it not actually transforming it? The book shows that reforms only affect the surface of schools. The core of the school institution is governed by rationality, which is associated with the industrial nationalist era. This rationality, at many levels – from state, to regional, to the level of everyday action of all actors – contradicts the structure of the globalizing world, its networking and non-hierarchical nature. In this new world, the institution of the school is still an institution that systematically norms and homogenizes the population and excludes all “inadaptable”. We are on the threshold of a whole new era, but schools sound with the rhythm of the 19th century.
