Description: The use of abbreviated versions of literary works from all fields of knowledge, from botany to the whole work of a historian such as Livy, was extremely common in Antiquity. These digests had various forms, ranging from “summary” (periochae) to the selection of abstracts (epitome), and passing by paraphrase; the absence of any theoretical framework, in the Greco-Roman world, explains such diversity. The contributors to this volume have been interested in studying specific cases of ancient abstracts, by questioning the different practices at work in scientific and technical works (medicine, astronomy, history) and in the rhetorical and academic context (poetry, school commentaries). They notice how surprising could be the ancient use of summarizing for the modern scholars. Indeed, ancient Greek and Roman scholars, in the writing of a book, did not hesitate to draw from summaries and not from integral works; others allowed themselves to add elements to the sources they were shortening, or even to “reinvent” the work they were summarizing. In the school context, abstracts had a particularly important role, of which ancient epitomators were often perfectly aware: deletions and modifications show particular attention to the readership, and the summary has its own issues in the transmission of all forms of literature.

Description: Continuum: Writings on Poetry as Artistic Practice reunites the most part of the essays and articles produced between 2007 and 2015 by poet and artist Alessandro De Francesco. It shows what De Francesco himself affirms at a point in the last text of the book: that an artist can also be a theorist, and that artistic practice and theoretical practice are difficult to distinguish in his work. This book is multilingual: each text was left in the language in which it was written. Therefore, it is predominantly in French, but Italian, English and German are also represented. In spite of poetry being at the center of Alessandro De Francesco’s interests as a thinker, the texts contained in this book are very heterogeneous: poetic statements, essays, scientific articles, lectures, interviews; and yet they also show a deep continuity. Continuum stands for the author’s uninterrupted commitment for poetry, for the numerous connections among the approached themes, and especially for the innovatory theoretical and political positions expressed here, from which all these writings originated.

Description: Songs play a key role in 19th-century literary thinking: Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Stendhal, Hugo, Musset, Michelet, Flaubert, Rimbaud, Verlaine: every famous French author wrote about them. Expressions of daily life as well as political writings, be it familiar or hard to grasp, songs remain a fascinating yet understudied subject. This is partly due to their commonly acknowledged status as minor artistic productions. Yet, songs were an essential form of expression of both intimate and collective issues. This study, based on a large set of archival documents, focuses on 19th-century “popular” songs, mainly through social and political songs inspired by contemporary events. Apart from the prolific French songwriter Béranger – whose glory has progressively faded into simply a name –, who wrote those songs? Who sang them? What were their goals, forms, and themes? This book’s ambition is threefold. Firstly, it offers a first-ever detailed textual analysis of 19th-century French songs. Secondly, it explains how the now common idea of “popular song” was born in the first half of the century, and how it grew. Finally, this book strives to address a little-known though extremely rich corpus.

Description: In 1966, seven years after the advent of the Cuban revolution, a new poetic group was born around the magazine El caimán barbudo, affiliated to the Communist Party of Cuba. Their writing is turbulent, original, combining adherence to the regime and playful distance. The evolution of freedom of expression in Cuba and the national and international repercussions of their works, will push some of them on the path of exile and dissidence, others to find a singular way on the island. In 1996, a final attempt to reunite the group through the pages of the Madrid-based journal Encuentro de la cultura cubana redraws their ties. Combining literary studies and social sciences, this book traces the untold history of this group during the second half of the twentieth century and analyzes the way in which literature reinvents itself according to the political upheavals.

Description: The poetry of Ruan Ji has been previously translated several times, with one fully scholarly translation of both the poetry and the Fu (poetic expositions). The present translation not only provides a facing page critical Chinese text, it addresses two problems that have been ignored or not adequately treated in earlier works. First, it traces the history of the current text. The rather serious problems with this text will be, if not soluble, at least visible. Second, translations have been shaped by the anachronistic assumption that Ruan Ji was loyal to the declining Wei dynasty, when actual power had been taken by the Suma family, who founded the Jin dynasty after Ruan Ji's death. The introduction shows how and when that assumption took full shape five centuries after Ruan Ji lived and why it is not tenable. This leads to a different kind of translation, closer to what a contemporary reader might have understood and far less certain than referring it to some political event. The Poetry of Xi Kang presents a complete scholarly translation of his poetic works (including "Rhapsody on the Zither") alongside the original texts. Many of Xi Kang's poems are difficult and most are laden with allusions and quotations, adding another level of challenge to interpretation. Basic explanatory notes are provided. The translations are based on the critical modern edition of Xi Kang's work by Dai Mingyang, generally considered to be the best edition available. Important editions by Lu Xun and Lu Qinli are consulted on matters of variants, arrangement, and interpretation.

Description: People have interpreted the numeration of the years of their life since Antiquity (when, for example, the Emperor Augustus did so). Ancient medical theories thus maintained that matter is renewed every seven or nine years. The product of these two numbers is sixty-three, and the sixty-third year of a person’s life – the great climacteric – was believed to be very critical. Max Engammare presents the history of the anxiety surrounding this year that came back into force during the Renaissance, as early as Petrarch but especially with Marsilio Ficino. This book touches on most of the great names of the age, from Philipp Melanchthon and Theodore de Bèze to Rabelais. The question of the sixty-third king of France, Henri III or Henri IV, was also discussed by members of the League. The goal is to achieve an understanding of the arithmetic of these ancient fears that were reborn at the end of the 1400s and which have not in fact completely disappeared today—a proof of this is Sigmund Freud and the curse of 27 listing all the famous artists dead at the age of 27 (three times nine).

Description: Anne Hébert - literature - materialism - poetry - novel - theatre
