    Les maisons gallo-romaines d’Ambrussum (Villetelle-Hérault) (2022)

    Description: Relay-point on a roman road, the oppidum of Ambrussum is a major site concerning conditions and aspects of the romanisation in the region of Nîmes. Two houses with internal courtyards were already known and dated from the first century AD and form an insula of secteur I. Research conducted from 1976 to 1980 in secteur IV revealed a house of the same type with its dependancies. Following an analysis based on the conditions of implantation, occupation and abandonment, their architecture and distribution of the finds, these constructions appear to be an original expression of gallo-roman habitations. Situated in their local and regional contexts, they reflect the process of urbanisation and social differenciation, and of the village type exploitation existence.

    Description: La publication en 2013 d'une version reconstruite du texte de Kracauer Die totalitäre Propaganda (1937-1938) a renouvelé la perception que l’on pouvait avoir de cette dimension de son œuvre et de son apport à une « théorie critique de la propagande ». La réflexion sur la propagande s’inscrit dans le contexte plus vaste de l’élaboration par les exilés allemands, au tournant des années 1930-1940, d’une grille de lecture du national-socialisme, vu comme une pathologie de la modernité, ainsi que dans celui des grands projets de recherches américains sur la propagande nazie (auxquels Adorno et Kracauer ont été associés). Au sein de la nébuleuse de la « Théorie critique » Kracauer exprime, comme Benjamin, un point de vue à certains égards dissonant. À rebours d’une approche qui insiste surtout sur la continuité entre capitalisme et nazisme, il se montre particulièrement sensible à la séduction esthétique du fascisme, et à sa mise en scène d’une réalité de substitution, qui est selon lui l’expression d’une fuite en avant nihiliste : ses analyses concrètes ne portent pas tant sur les contenus du message que sur le langage même de la propagande, et la vision de la société et de l’histoire qu’elle véhicule, dans sa forme même. Le débat complexe qui se développe à cette époque entre Adorno, Benjamin et Kracauer met notamment en œuvre les catégories de « fétichisme » (Adorno), de « fantasmagorie » et d’« esthétisation du politique » (Benjamin), d’« apparence » et de « pseudo-réalité » (Kracauer). Il présente en premier lieu un intérêt historique, en tant que l’analyse du nazisme constitue pour le projet d’une théorie critique une mise à l’épreuve, qui suscite de vifs débats internes et aboutit chez Adorno et Horkheimer, dans la Dialectique de la raison (1944-1947), à une reformulation de ce projet. Mais dans un contexte aujourd’hui bien différent, les thèmes qui sont débattus entre ces protagonistes, comme celui de la dérive autoritaire du libéralisme, des manipulations de masse, de la construction médiatique du réel n’ont rien perdu de leur actualité.

    Description: The Seine-Yonne sector occupies a special place in our knowledge of Neolithic societies. Although an interface between the southern and north-eastem branches, it is also the exclusive preserve of chalk flint. Applying the "technological system" concept, the author seeks to identify the skills levels of the flint knappers, asks whether expert knappers existed, and explores the spatial breakdown of the operational chain and the methods of acquiring and distributing raw materials in order to address the question of the socio-economic organization of flint tool production. Her exploration is based on the study of twelve reference series comprising over 100.000 flint artifacts in a multivariate analysis making use, among other approaches, of cladistics, the first time this technique has ever been applied to this field. By systematically referring to anthropological and historical questions, this book constitutes an important contri­bution to the study of the development of Neolithic communities across Europe.

    Description: In 1985-86, rescue excavations around the gallo-roman baths city of Aquae Bormonis brought to the surface exceptional ceramic material: hundreds of figurines, archetypes and casts, mostly original, prove the existence of a large workshop still to be precisely localized. This book is a synthetic study of these finds as well as of the structures and other types of material such as: common and glazed ceramic, terra sigillata, lamps (probably manufactured on the site); amphorae, coins, metallic and faunal material. Through the new chronological, typological and trading data exposed this volume is essential for people studying ceramic and any archaeologist working on the gallo-roman period.

    Description: The publication of excavations at Castellu throws an entirely new light upon late-Roman and early-medieval Corsica. The study includes an examination of the finds, most of which are of 6th century date, and an analysis of the faunal remains. The latter shows not only that domesticated species differed from those of the Iron-Age but also that eating habits had changed. The resulting picture is one of significant and long-lasting Romanisation of innerCorsica, and of ongoing trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean region, even after the Van­dal invasion. The publication marks a major step towards a new understanding of this period of Corsican history.

Il est le plus significatif des phénomènes de notre temps dans la mesure où sa dynamique a envahi le sens de toute théorie et de toute pratique. » La Philosophie de l’argent de Georg Simmel, dont la première édition parut en 1900, suivie d’une édition augmentée en 1907, a donné à la sociologie, au moment même où elle naissait en Allemagne, un tour très particulier. Comme le marxisme Simmel traite du capital et du travail ; comme Max Weber il traite des formations sociales et des forces morales qui les portent. Mais il le fait en des termes qui, tout à la fois, sont profondément marqués par le contexte spirituel de l’époque – en particulier la « philosophie de la Vie » – et qui ont révélé toutes leurs potentialités critiques en ce qui concerne l’interprétation de la « vie moderne ». Les cinq textes de ce recueil portent précisément sur le rapport entre l’argent et « l’économie de la vie ». Il ne s’agit nullement de parega mais, dans l’optique de la sociologie de la culture dont Simmel est le fondateur, d’études qui permettent d’appréhender l’ensemble de sa pensée et qu’il a d’ailleurs en partie intégrées à certaines de ses publications majeures, et notamment à son ouvrage-testament Lebensanschauung.

    Description: Dire qu'un animal se comporte à l'égard de ce qui l'entoure qu'est-ce à dire ? Le comportement est constitué par un type de manifestations qui n'appartient qu'à certains vivants ; il forme un flux continu et spontané qu'une étude segmentée détruit nécessairement. Pourtant, ce sont de brèves séquences comportementales isolées au laboratoire que l'on choisit d'étudier. Mais a-t-on encore affaire à un comportement ? Ne l'a-t-on pas ainsi réduit à l'un des éléments qui le composent : les mécanismes physiologiques, le programme génétique, les opérations cognitives, etc. ? Qu'est-ce qu'un animal empêché de se comporter, qui est-il ? On doit alors s'interroger sur les raisons de la prédominance des études de laboratoire et sur les bénéfices qui peuvent être tirés d'une telle production de connaissances. Car ces méthodes décident notamment des conditions de vie de millions de mammifères et d'oiseaux destinés à la consommation. À l'opposé de cette perspective réductionniste, le comportement est compris par les approches phénoménologiques comme l'expression d'une liberté, une relation dialectique avec le milieu. Celles-ci imposent du même coup des conditions d'observation en milieu naturel. Comment, dès lors, élaborer une éthologie plus juste, tant du point de vue de la compréhension du comportement que de celui des besoins, au sens large, des animaux placés sous la domination de l'homme ?

    Description: This volume presents important results not only for archaeology in Provence but also increases our knowledge of the Mediterranean world at the very begining of the Middle Ages. The recent excavations of Saint-Blaise oppidum, near the Rhône delta, have brought to light the different stages of the reoccupation, from the 5th to the 7th century, of this protohistoric site. The ceramic assemblage testifies the importance of trade: red slip wares, amphorae, grey coarse wares from North Africa, the eastern Mediterranean and Liguria, regional slip wares (DS.P.), etc. The discovery of glass-ware with christian motifs and of vitrified crucibles indicates the existence of glass-working; stone, bone and metal objects, the coins, the fauna, especially the abundant remains of shellfish consumed, enrich the image of the life on this oppidum, one of the most important in Provence during this period of crisis and of change.

    Description: For about ten years numerous studies have been carried out in France about roman lamps. This one, for the first time and for a masters’ degree research, is oriented toward the systematic study of productions from several potters’ workshops in Montans (Tarn), ail from welldated archaeological context. More than a simple descriptive inventory, the author gives us a chronology of the Ist and IInd centuries. Her analysis of three associated criteria (decoration/type/sig nature, mark), based upon the study of 900 pieces, reveals some original aspects of the potters’ practice and leads to interesting interpretations about the technique used most of the time in Montans which consists in making moulds from lamps already in use.

Faut-il être averti de son bonheur pour le vivre ? Comment régler le dilemme entre affects et cognition ? Le bonheur est, pour le moins, un concept dont la principale caractéristique est de ne pas donner prise à une interprétation unique. Or, si le malheur a été abondamment étudié par les sciences humaines et sociales, le bonheur jusqu’ici ne semble pas avoir été un objet bon à penser par et pour l’anthropologie, au contraire de la psychologie ou de l’économie. Initié afin de réduire cet écart, cet ouvrage collectif s’attache à montrer de quelles façons, au-delà du constat de la variabilité culturelle et individuelle de ses manifestations, le bonheur peut être saisi dans ses formes élémentaires. Les auteurs rassemblés dans Ethnologie des gens heureux proposent ainsi des pistes de réflexion à la fois méthodologiques et théoriques qui, tout en se réclamant d’orientations de recherche personnelles, offrent au lecteur un ensemble de matériaux ethnographiques attachés à rendre plus compréhensible ce qui fait le bonheur des êtres humains.

    Description: Comment penser et exercer l'autorité ? Longtemps, la notion fut dénoncée et remise en cause tant sur le plan social que culturel. Aujourd'hui, elle fait l'objet d'une forme de réhabilitation dans le débat public au risque de servir de slogan et de remède à tous les problèmes actuels de la société française. Dans ce contexte, il semble utile de poser à nouveaux frais la question formulée par Hannah Arendt à la fin des années 1950 : « Qu’est-ce que l’autorité ? ». C’est l’objectif que se donne cet ouvrage collectif franco-allemand dans une approche pluridisciplinaire. Au croisement de l’histoire, de la philosophie et de la science politique, il vise à interroger les notions gravitant autour de celle d’autorité comme le pouvoir et la domination pour mieux réfléchir à partir de cas concrets aux conditions pratiques de l’exercice de l’autorité en France et en Allemagne au xixe et au xxe siècle. En cernant au plus près ces pratiques d’autorité, on est mieux à même de dégager les stratégies d’accommodement, de résistance ou de contournement qui permettent de rendre compte de la complexité du social.

    Description: This study gives an account of the results of the archaeological excavations of the Gallo-Roman village at Roanne (Rodumna). The research is based mainly on 22 assemblages of material dating from the 1st century B.C. to the 3rd century A.D., including glassware, iron and bronze objects, and above all an exceptional corpus of pottery. Detailed analysis of the pottery and its relationship with the rest of the material enabled a chronology to be established. Using criteria such as frequency, use, variety of pottery production, datation, origins, etc., this chronology was found to be in continuity with previously studied Gaulish horizons. A series of illustrations places the material within the context of its discovery. The results of this study lead to an outline of the economic development of Rodumna - a small, rural town, built of clay and wood, very much in keeping with Gaulish tradition. This new volume in the dAf collection continues the study of the Gaulish occupations of Roanne begun in the recently published dAf 62. These two volumes, along with the publication on Feurs (dAf 14), constitute an exceptional documentation about the antique Segusiavi region.

    Description: Au cours de cette dernière décennie du siècle, les cultures nationales sont appelées à chercher et à trouver, dans le commun horizon de l'Europe, des formes toujours plus hautes de dialogue et de collaboration créatrice. La construction d'un avenir européen unitaire, qui a tant d'importance dans les domaines politique, social et économique, dépend en premier lieu de la vie intellectuelle. Impossible, lorsqu'on analyse l'histoire de notre continent, de ne pas être frappé par la crise récurrente de la conscience civile européenne, marquée par une vénalité omniprésente, par les haines religieuses, par une soif brutale de conquête. Mais cette expérience elle-même s'est traduite, suivant un processus qui va s' accélérant, par une meilleure connaissance des contours moraux de l'Europe, à mesure qu'en divers temps et divers lieux les plus brillants hommes de culture opposaient à la barbarie avide et intolérante des conquérants la sagesse et la dignité des peuples conquis ; et l'idée a fait son chemin, selon laquelle on ne peut remédier plus efficacement à la dégénérescence des esprits qu'en faisant siens les sentiments et les idéaux sur quoi, depuis des siècles, l'Europe fonde sa vocation unitaire. Dans ce patrimoine de formes et de traditions distinctes, mais que des liens idéaux nous ont rendues communes, on peut même désigner la condition première de toute unification politique et la base la plus solide d'une intégration des diverses collectivités nationales dans une nouvelle citoyenneté européenne. Étudier et éclairer quelques moments significatifs de ce complexe mouvement spirituel, sans cesse menacé par les forces qui nient la raison et l'universalisme de la dignité et de la liberté humaines : tel est le propos de la «Biblioteca Europea», qui accueillera des contributions historiques, philologiques et philosophiques de spécialistes tant étrangers qu'italiens, de formation et d'orientation fort différentes. Pour assurer une large ouverture et la fécondité des rencontres, la double décision a été prise de publier des textes dans les principales langues de la culture européenne, et de traduire en italien des oeuvres peu connues dans la Péninsule ou difficilement accessibles. En donnant son appui à une entreprise éditoriale que caractérise cette rigueur intellectuelle, l'Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici entend nourrir le dialogue - si ancien et si neuf - de la grande tradition européenne.

    Description: This work, which summarises the author’s doctoral dissertation, presents an original approach to the study of lamps from the Early Roman Empire. Using a method more often applied to the study of samian pottery, the author has carried out a systematic analysis of the associations of signature, form and decoration. The purpose of the study was to verify a hypothesis, that characteristic types could be associated with a spécifie potter’s signature, and, at the same time, to identify actual workshops. The research is successful not only in demonstrating the existence of significant connections between several potters, but also in questioning the uncritical use, still frequently made, of chronoiogical typologies. The author argues for setting up reference corpora of makers stamps and decorative marks and for cataloguing characteristic forms, thus enabling the lamp to play a significant rôle in the archaeological evidence, as well as bringing to light a new craft.

Blanchet at the beginning of the century, about fifty french and foreigners archaeologists have reviewed research on gallo-roman pipe-day figurines, produced in moulds and commercialised from the 1st to IIIrd centuries AD. Are studied here successively: the workshops, production techniques, coroplathes, iconographical inventories, chronology, the origins and use of the figurines, their distribution in and outside France. The results of physico-chemical analysis of clays which should in the future help in the identification of the principal workshops and an expert system applied to the identification of figurine fragments are finally presented. This considerable mass of informations will for many years be a reference base.

    Description: L’archéologie préhistorique, inventée il y a à peine deux siècles, est une science récente ; c’est également une science en constante évolution dont les frontières restent indéterminées. Ce qu’elle est aujourd’hui devenue n’a plus guère à voir avec ce qu’elle a pu être : progressant vite, cette discipline rassemble autour d’elle des compétences exception­nellement nombreuses (géologiques, zoologiques, paléoanthropologiques, etc.). L’ambition de cet ouvrage est donc multiple. Interrogeant la provenance de cette discipline et l’évolution de ses rapports avec d’autres sciences, il propose tout d’abord une ­cartographie des avancées en cours. Et, pour cela, quelques-uns des meilleurs spécialistes de la discipline ont été sollicités. Mais il s’agit tout autant, d’une part, de porter un regard critique sur l’épistémologie qu’elle déploie et, d’autre part, de mener une réflexion sur les défis qu’il lui faut relever afin de se rendre pleinement visible. C’est pourquoi quatre axes de questionnement ont ici été privilégiés : le rapport au temps (et à l’histoire plus récente), l’évocation de récentes percées scientifiques, la confrontation aux autres sciences humaines, le partage du savoir au-delà des cercles ­savants. En cela cet ouvrage, à l’instar de ce qu’a finalement toujours été la préhistoire, se veut ­résolument interdisciplinaire. Aussi mobilise-t-il, en plus d’archéologues aux compétences multiples, des anthropologues, des historiens, des philosophes. Seule une telle interdisciplinarité peut nous permettre d’esquisser à petites touches les nouvelles frontières, dynamiques, mouvantes et toujours prometteuses, de la préhistoire.

    Description: Two exceptionally well preserved sites were discovered in 2000 on the backshore of Baie Orientale on the island of Saint Martin, Lesser Antilles: Mesoindian camps (800 BC — 100 AD), where subsistence activities were associated with stone, shell and coral tool manufacturing, which was previously unknown for the Preceramic period, and a Early Neoindian site (740-960 AD) interpreted as a specialized satellite camp of the village of Pointe du Canonnier, thus corresponding to a territorial settlement pattern that is characteristic of this period. The innovative and original study proposed by Dominique Bonnissent sheds light on the complex lifestyle of the nomadic Preceramic populations that moved about the Caribbean Ocean. This work henceforth provides an indispensible resource for Caribbean Pre-Columbian archaeology. At the beginning of each chapter, a substantial summary with bibliographic references and figure citations allow English and Spanish speaking readers to consult the essential data and arguments.

    Description: This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excava­tions on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author’s study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar’s conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of funda­mental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age.

    Description: Before 1988 and the road construction that led to the archaeological operation presented in this book, the site of Paule was considered as just one earthen enclosure among others in Brittany. Then, from the first excavations, its unique nature was revealed: sculptures, monumental enclosures, and numerous potsherds quickly enabled its identification as an aristocratic residence. Twenty years of research have since uncovered six centuries of continuous occupation across nearly 10 hectares. From the farm’s original founding, circa 550 BC, until the site was abandoned circa 15 BC (soon after the Conquest), the reader is invited to follow—in a simple and lively and manner at the scale of human lives—the adaptations of a landed aristocratic family to their environment. Agricultural, defensive and storage needs, along with budding artisanal activities, modeled the buildings and spatial distribution of the site through time. The central family unit gradually detached from its dependents, who were relegated to a peripheral enclosure, as it attracted a population from surrounding areas that it would encompass within a vast fortification. The research methods employed in this work are those of Classical Archaeology, whose quality here lies in their coherence. Yves Menez, whose research at Paul was corroborated by a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University, chose to venture beyond an interrogation based on complete and objective documentation of the site. Drawing from his double education in archaeology and engineering, he chose to embark on a broader historical and anthropological endeavor, integrating the phenomena involved in the transformations of a broader region. At each stage, he asked “why,” thus delving into the social structure, significance of the family and lineage, and the development of institutions. Abundant color illustrations enhance the written presentation of the archaeological remains, including reconstructions based on a digital field model. Finally, the English translation of the figure legends and detailed summaries of each chapter enable international readers clear access to the descriptions, arguments, and interpretations.

    Description: In this publication, Jacques Thiriot, a research worker with the CNRS, presents the results of the fieldwork carried out between 1972 and 1979 on the mediaeval grey pottery workshops of the Uzege and the Lower Rhone, in particular at Saint-Victor-des-Oules in the Gard (XIIth and XIIIth cent.) and Bollene in the Vaucluse (XIIIth cent.). During this work, a methodology adapted to the excavation and interpretation of the remains (ovens and buildings) was perfected, thanks to a rigorous technical analysis. It provided an exceptional insight into production methods in one of the largest mediaeval potter’s workshops in south-east France. It has also completed typological data based on pottery found during excavations in user centres, not only in Provence but also in Languedoc. Apart from the subject, rarely dealt with for the mediaeval period, the originality of the work lies in the systematic use of geophysical prospection and scientific methods of dating and in the application of an ethno-archaeological approach which gives a better understanding of mediaeval pottery activities in the region.

    Description: In 1991, construction work in the north-east neighbourhood of Marseilles was the opportunity of studying the quarter Sainte-Barbe (5th-17th century). These excavations revealed the remains of an extra muros quarter specialized in the production of pottery during the 13th century. For the first time in France, the production of urban polyvalent workshops over a hundred years could be analyzed (common unglazed ware, glazed cooking ware, painted tin-glazed ware...). The presence of a kiln of Islamic tradition as well as the types of shapes suggest a transfer of the know-how, moving-abouts of the craftsmen and of their productions, and offers a newer view upon the history of techniques and the origins of majolica in Southern France. This book presents a study about kilns with clay rods supporting the vessels around the Mediterranean basin an in the Near-East. It sheds light upon a firing technique which has disappeared in the West. An exceptional documentary source concerning ceramic techniques as well as the history of the City of Marseilles.

Today, Ivan Jahier revises this question based on the Protohistoric site of Courseulles-sur-Mer, in this case located inland from the Normandy coast. This site possesses all the classic elements of an indigenous farm: houses, fences, outbuildings, storage facilities, an agricultural and pasture area, domestic remains, traces of craft activities, and even a few graves, but distributed inside and around an enclosure wall three to four times larger than most such walls of the Iron Age of this region What was the purpose of this grouping of a number of storage facilities within an enclosure wall whose function was clearly more ostentatious than defensive and which included no more than two or three houses? Ivan Jahier attempts to answer this question through a solid analytical approach. The conclusions he draws and interpretations he proposes shed new light on the organization of society during the 5th century BC and enable the formulation of new hypotheses concerning the origins of the cultural transition of the beginning of the second Iron Age in Normandy.

    Description: Le choix de textes de Georg Simmel, réunis dans ce livre, procède de la même curiosité éclectique qui a présidé à la réception de son œuvre en France, en mêlant des études de psychologie sociale, qui prolongent celles déjà traduites sur l'argent, la mode, le conflit ou la femme, et des essais portant sur des questions d'esthétique. Douze des treize études ici réunies ont en commun d'avoir été écrites entre 1906 et 1908, c'est-à-dire à une période où Simmel s'est déjà éloigné du néo-kantisme et développe, en dehors de toute visée systématique, les analyses sociologiques qui formeront, en 1908, la matière de son œuvre maîtresse : Sociologie. Études sur les formes de la socialisation. Dans ces essais, Simmel s'intéresse à des objets concrets, à des réalités de la vie quotidienne, telles que la vie de couple, la décoration de la maison, le désir qu’a tout individu de briller et de se parer. Cependant l’originalité et la profondeur des idées qu’exposent ces courts textes les tiennent à mille lieues de la littérature de circonstance. Qu’elles abordent le jeu d’une grande comédienne, comme la Duse, la théâtralité mensongère des ruelles vénitiennes ou les efforts de la peinture pour suggérer la troisième dimension, les réflexions de Simmel font toujours écho à la théorie philosophique : les concepts du néo-kantisme s’y retrouvent, sous une forme diffuse et adaptée aux besoins d’une conversation avec un lecteur cultivé mais pas nécessairement spécialisé. Dans l’essai plus tardif sur "La caricature", le changement des références philosophiques est patent : ce sont désormais les reflets d’une philosophie de la vie bergsonienne qui colorent l’analyse.

    Description: Entre 1927 et 1930 à Berlin, puis de 1934 à 1940 à Paris, Walter Benjamin travaille à accumuler des matériaux pour un projet de vaste envergure : retracer, à partir de l’étude des passages parisiens, une « préhistoire du XIXe siècle ». La rédaction du texte est sans cesse différée, tandis que l’immense corpus préparatoire semble voué à croître indéfiniment, devenant une somme composite de citations que double parfois, à la manière d’une note de régie, une réflexion ou une remarque énigmatique. Au fil de ses recherches, Benjamin se rend à l’évidence : il faudra que son Livre des passages soit enrichi par des images. Une « documentation visuelle » se constitue bientôt, écrit-il, glanée pour l’essentiel dans les recueils du Cabinet des estampes de la Bibliothèque nationale où il travaille pendant son exil parisien. Une centaine de notes témoignent de cette collecte et conservent, enfermée dans leurs plis, la mention d’une ou de plusieurs images qui sont restées pour la plupart inconnues jusqu’ici. Steffen Haug a voulu retrouver cette réserve enfouie. Gravures et dessins de presse, tracts, réclames, affiches et photographies, de Meryon et Grandville à Daumier, en passant par la cohorte anonyme et le tout-venant de la production visuelle à grand tirage du XIXe siècle : la moisson rapportée ici est surprenante. Elle invite à lire ou relire les Passages en faisant à l’image toute la place qu’elle occupe dans la pensée du dernier Benjamin, à l’heure où s’élaborent, sous la menace de temps assombris, son essai « L’œuvre d’art à l’époque de sa reproductibilité technique », le projet de livre sur Baudelaire ou ses Thèses sur le concept d’histoire.

It includes the study of the natural and cultural surrounding of the site, and the study of the achieved excavation of the West area and its three habitations. The architecture of the buildings, the organization of the domestic space and the settlement in its natural and economical context are the three major orientations. Thanks to a versatile research team, the conclusions drawn are a fundamental contribution to the understanding of the Neolithic cultures from Southern France.

    Description: This book provides a synthesis of the archeological research carried out in the town of Roanne (Loire) It was the site of a small Roman town whose name on the Peutinger Table and in Ptolomey is recorded as Rodumna and whose Gallic origin has been recognised since the 1950s. The small agglomeration of the late Iron Age became a maior centre of population in the Gallo roman civitas ot the SegusiaviThe work includes a detailed catalogue of the finds which can act as a basis for comparisons with other sites in central Gaul. The evolution of the settlement area from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC is described in detail. The study of the linds shows an important analysis of then evolution and the different stages of development in what was a crucial period for the history of Gaul culminating in the « romanization ». The discoveries also allow an interpretation of several aspects of daily life : the domestic architecture, diet industries, trade… Based on the material culture, these studies allow us to deal with certain aspects of the economy and to describe the material culture of theSegusiavi within the regional context.This volume is followed by another monograph in the Daf series on the Gallo-Raman occupation.

Il est peut-être le fruit d’une erreur d’analyse ou d’une illusion ; mais que signifie-t-il exactement et que nous révèle-t-il d’une portée politique possible de la philosophie ? La Déclaration des droits de l’homme et du citoyen ou le moment robespierriste, généralement privilégiés, sont loin d’épuiser une matière si riche : au contraire, la période qui suit la Thermidor et sur laquelle se penche cet ouvrage se révèle comme une intense période de réflexion sur l’efficace politique qui peut encore être attribuée à la philosophie. Confrontant entre eux des textes d’auteurs français et allemands, cet ouvrage prend à rebours un second lieu commun, hérité du xixe siècle, et selon lequel à une pratique sans théorie du côté de la France ferait écho une théorie sans pratique du côté allemand : en réalité, à cette époque, tous essaient de penser la philosophie comme alliance de la théorie philosophique et de la pratique, selon des modalités il est vrai très hétérogènes. Le « philosophique » ne doit plus nécessairement être considéré comme extérieur au « politique ».

    Description: Recent archaeological operations have greatly increased om knowledge of the original Marseilles town centre and of neighbourhoods gradually incorporated into the city The excavations presented here carried out in 1992-1993 close to the Vieux Port and Canebière districts, have revealed abundant hitherto unknown information relating to shoreline occupation layers (dating from the 4th cent or,- HC to the setting up of salt-works m the early Middle Ages) as well as to developments on the town’s periphery beyond the Plan fourmiguier fortifications In a previously rural area the suburb of Sainte-Catherine began to take shape, composed of several city blocks developed in conjunction with such construction protects as the Saint-Sépulcre hospital. The areawascompletely demolished in 1360 In the 18th century new construction began in the suburb which had become an integral part of the town m 1670 The new buildings were tom down at the beginning of the 19th century in order to make way for the Place du General- de-Gaulle, a major structural feature In the modern town of Marseilles

    Description: The site at Canneville (Oise) has been known since the XIXth century, mainly through surface finds until the rescue excavation in 1974-75. It supplied the material which is studied here by D. Hamard. The few badly damaged sherds allow nevertheless Canneville to be placed between Phase II and III of the Chasseen of northern France. On the other hand more than 3 000 lithic artefacts make up an homogeneous flint assemblage. Statistical studies lead toa suitable descriptive method and throw light on the raw material management System. This book opens up the way to a definition of the lithic assemblage of the Chasseen of northern France and fits into a field of research which is presently proceeding towards a periodisation of this culture.

This last point has Unifications concerning the dynamics of spatial occupation which will have to be taken into account from now onwards.

    Description: La philosophie du langage, l’esthétique et la philosophie de l’histoire de Walter Benjamin ont fait l’objet de travaux conséquents, qui ont assuré la reconnaissance et balisé l’interprétation de textes essentiels. La pensée anthropologique, en revanche, reste un champ insuffisamment exploré, bien que central dans l’œuvre de Benjamin. Elle trouve sa source dans une réflexion approfondie sur la question du corps, qui captive le philosophe du milieu des années 1910 jusqu’à la fin de sa vie et ouvre des perspectives inédites sur la théorie de la connaissance, l’éthique et la théorie politique. Ce livre tisse ensemble les différents fils qui constituent cette pensée du corps et relève l’ampleur des enjeux que ce questionnement soulève. Les textes de Benjamin rendent remarquablement compte du défi que doit relever la philosophie européenne à l’aube du xxe siècle : prendre en considération le caractère corporel de l’expérience et, ce faisant, l’historicité de la connaissance, la relation constitutive à l’altérité, l’expérience de la vulnérabilité, l’engagement matériel et affectif dans le monde social. Suivre l’évolution du questionnement sur le corps met en lumière la cohésion de l’œuvre de Benjamin, tout en en éclairant la position singulière qu’elle occupe au sein de son contexte théorique d’émergence. Si la réflexion de Benjamin sur la corporéité ouvre des perspectives sur le paysage philosophique de l’Europe du tournant du siècle, elle entre aussi en résonance avec des questionnements qui animent la philosophie contemporaine.

    Description: Discovered during the construction of a four- lane trunk road (N 176) near Dinan, the Iron Age farm at Le Boisanne is but a modest rural settlement ; it constituted however an ideal subject of study. One can follow without interruption its evolution during a very long period, from the 4th century BC up to the 3rd century AD. The stratigraphy, the structures and the artefacts are presented in detail. The farm is placed in its context, both geographical (the Rance estuary) and historic (Armorican Iron Age). This study is concluded by a broad reflection, extending outside the purely regional framework: on the function and evolution of “native farms” or aedificia (archaeological myth or reality ?) of the Iron Age and gallo-roman periods.

    Description: Walter Benjamin est resté célèbre grâce à ses travaux en tant que philosophe, historien de l’art ou encore critique littéraire. Cet ouvrage présente un aspect méconnu de ses activités : entre 1927 et 1933, Benjamin a enregistré une centaine d’interventions au microphone sur les antennes de Berlin et Francfort et s’est efforcé de dépasser les formes journalistiques de pur divertissement. À travers ses chroniques littéraires ou ses contes radiophoniques pour enfants, le philosophe berlinois a souhaité repenser le matériau sonore diffusé sur les ondes. Ce livre original propose d’aller à la rencontre de Walter Benjamin par le prisme de sa voix. Les recherches de Philippe Baudouin à l’origine du présent ouvrage tendent à faire entendre l’écho du philosophe, en proposant de redécouvrir l’intérêt à la fois théorique et pratique dont il témoigna pour la radio. L’ouvrage comprend également des annexes sonores, avec d’une part les deux seuls témoignages sonores du philosophe connus à ce jour, extraits de la pièce radiophonique pour enfants Chahut autour de Kasperl, diffusée à la radio de Cologne le 9 septembre 1932, et d’autre part une interview de Stéphane Hessel réalisée par Philippe Baudouin pour France Culture, dans laquelle ce premier témoigne reconnaître la voix de Benjamin dans le personnage de Kasperl. Ce livre est une réédition augmentée du livre de Philippe Baudouin paru en 2009 aux Éditions de la Maison des sciences de l’homme. Il a reçu le prix Inathèque décerné par l’Institut national de l’audioviosuel.
