    Beschreibung: Cinéma et télévision, que l’on opposa longtemps par leur mode de production et de réception, leur public ou même leur portée artistique, sont fortement liés par leur exploitation de la sérialité. Si la télévision est devenue la reine des séries, les récits audiovisuels sériels sont d’abord apparus dans les premières décennies du cinéma pour fidéliser un public, dans la droite ligne de ce que la littérature avait initié au XIXe siècle. Avec l’essor de la télévision dans les années 1950, les séries télévisées exploitent certaines stratégies des séries cinématographiques, tout en créant de nouvelles. Aujourd’hui, les grandes franchises hollywoodiennes, comme les séries télévisées anglophones, dominent les marchés et les imaginaires du monde entier. Alors que l’essor du phénomène sériel, aussi bien qualitatif que quantitatif, semble inexorable, quelles implications esthétiques, culturelles, industrielles et économiques sont à l’œuvre ? Quels sont les liens entre le récit audiovisuel et la sérialité au sens large ? Quelle est la spécificité de la sérialité dans les arts narratifs audiovisuels ? À travers l’histoire du cinéma et de la télévision, et de leur évolution inter-médiatique avec l’arrivée d’internet notamment, et au fil d’analyses approfondies d’œuvres comme The Hunger Games, Hannibal, Scream ou encore Crazy Ex Girlfriend, cet ouvrage éclaire les mécanismes et les contraintes de la sérialité audiovisuelle du monde anglophone.

    Beschreibung: Aux États-Unis, la notion de race est utilisée de manière routinière par les médecins en tant que variable biologique, culturelle ou sociale, selon les situations de soins. Croisant les notions de citoyenneté, de responsabilité et de droits civiques, ainsi que les questionnements autour de la politisation de la science, cet ouvrage retrace l’histoire de la médicalisation du corps noir par la profession psychiatrique aux États-Unis, du xxe siècle jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. Conjuguant l’histoire et la sociologie, il est ainsi question de retracer les différents régimes par lesquels la notion de race a été jugée pertinente par les psychiatres pour naturaliser les différences corporelles des années 1920 jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine. En s’appuyant sur un corpus d’archives personnelles de médecins, d’institutions de soins et de centres de recherche en psychiatrie, ainsi que sur une enquête qualitative réalisée auprès de psychiatres en Californie, ce livre démontre que la catégorie de race irrigue encore et toujours les pratiques et les discours institutionnels, aussi bien dans les représentations que les médecins véhiculent des corps soignés, que dans les stratégies de naturalisation du social employées pour prendre en charge leurs patients.

    Beschreibung: Dès la deuxième moitié du xixe siècle, dans un contexte d’intense ségrégation raciale aux États-Unis, des Africains-Américains écrivent l’histoire occultée de leur communauté pour l’inscrire au cœur du récit national et, au-delà, pour révéler la contribution de la diaspora noire à l’histoire mondiale. Cette histoire en marge questionne la discipline historique elle-même et affirme la nécessité d’écrire une histoire-monde. Mais comment écrire une véritable histoire globale? Ce livre entend démontrer qu’il faut non seulement donner droit de cité à celles et ceux qui ont trop souvent été exclus du récit historique ou ont été relégués à ses marges, mais aussi concevoir la marge (géographique, sociale, économique) comme un centre d’innovation épistémologique et politique, un lieu paradoxalement privilégié pour (re)penser et (ré)écrire l’histoire. Depuis plus d’un siècle à travers le monde, des historiens et des historiennes placent la périphérie au centre et, par là même, déprovincialisent l’histoire. Ce sont ces travaux qui, faisant l’histoire des marges (sexuelles-genrées, impériales-coloniales, scientifiques-disciplinaires...), participent à l’écriture d’une histoire globale.

    Beschreibung: L'exaltation des richesses gastronomiques des terroirs précède la venue des touristes. C'est un fait acquis et connu. Mais, la solution de continuité entre alimentation quotidienne (ou populaire) des espaces investis et gastronomies touristiques n'est pas linéaire, pas plus qu'elle n'est figée dans le temps. Les goûts changent autant que les lieux gourmands ou leurs vecteurs. Étrangers aux pays (fonctionnaires notamment), voyageurs, villégiateurs, touristes enfin, n'ont ni les mêmes saisonnalités, ni les mêmes besoins ou aspirations : les uns cultivent un art consommé de l'économie - ou de l'identique -, les autres s'adonnent aux plaisirs recherchés de la table. Les guides enregistrent ces besoins de bonnes (et parfois moins bonnes) surprises. Mais, si dans l'invitation au voyage, butinage et cabotage alimentaires prennent une place croissante, le « terroir gourmand » peut-il, à lui seul, faire tourisme ? Outre que la nationalisation des cuisines régionales est plus ou moins constante, l'artisanat gustatif est souvent devenu vitrine d'industries alimentaires. S'il existe donc bien une carte des saveurs - décor préalable au ravissement des papilles qui contribue à la construction des envies d'ailleurs -, la question est alors de savoir ce qu'il reste d'authentique dans une alimentation « des vacances », traversée de métissages et de bricolages. Au carrefour du local et du global, les frontières culturelles et culinaires, ont-elles en définitive vocation à prévenir les situations de conflit au sein des identités régionales ? Voilà quelques-unes des questions auxquelles répond ce livre, en explorant les nombreux critères de jugement qui lient territoires touristiques et imaginaires gustatifs.

    Beschreibung: Comment les pensées créatives émergent-elles dans le champ de notre conscience ? Qu’est-ce qui pousse un individu à s’engager dans une activité ou à changer de comportement ? Notre style de vie peut-il ralentir les effets délétères du vieillissement cérébral ? Une vingtaine de cognitivistes français, belges et allemands tentent de répondre à ces questions et apportent ainsi un nouvel éclairage sur la créativité, la motivation et le vieillissement cognitif. La première partie de l’ouvrage est consacrée à l’étude des idées créatives, des facteurs qui peuvent faciliter leur émergence, et de la façon dont elles sont générées par l’esprit et le cerveau humain. La deuxième partie de l’ouvrage s’intéresse davantage aux processus motivationnels qui sont à l’origine de la production des comportements humains et déterminent leur intensité et leur direction. Les auteurs illustrent leurs propos dans différents domaines de la vie sociale tels que le choix des formations et des professions ou la pratique des activités physiques et sportives. Enfin, la troisième partie de l’ouvrage fait le point sur l’état actuel des connaissances sur le vieillissement cognitif. Il est notamment démontré que les habitudes de vie sont des facteurs déterminants du bien vieillir qui peuvent prolonger la préservation de l’autonomie des seniors et améliorer leur qualité de vie. L’approche qui a été choisie pour avancer sur ces trois questions sociétales est résolument pluridisciplinaire puisqu’elle s’appuie sur différentes sciences telles que la philosophie, les neurosciences cognitives, la psychologie cognitive et la psychologie sociale.

    Beschreibung: Longtemps perçue avec méfiance, la bande dessinée a depuis gagné sa place dans les bibliothèques, les écoles, les musées, les galeries... Si elle a obtenu de haute lutte le statut de « neuvième art » en France et en Belgique, c’est notamment grâce à une nouvelle génération d’auteurs, aux cercles bédéphiles et même, en France, grâce à l’État. Toutefois, son entrée au panthéon des arts est aussi le fruit d’une mutation décisive dans les circuits de diffusion. Pendant des décennies, la bande dessinée est restée un produit de presse et l’album, quant à lui, était tout au plus un produit de luxe. Mais dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, le marché de l’édition se transforme en profondeur, et bascule de l’univers de l’illustré vers celui du livre. Cet ouvrage explore ce passage de la presse à l’album, et montre comment ce processus affecte les manières de créer, de transmettre et de lire la bande dessinée. L’album transforme les métiers du dessin, bouleverse les manières de raconter en images, et contribue au sacre de l’auteur. Il confère à la bande dessinée une respectabilité ; il la dote, également, d’une mémoire, forgeant peu à peu un canon des littératures dessinées. L’identité de la bande dessinée franco-belge ne tient-elle pas au rôle central de l’album ?     Beschreibung: Le sang est une substance à laquelle on prête de nombreux pouvoirs. Fluide biologique, réalité concrète de la vie qui palpite ou s’enfuit, plus ou moins épais, visqueux ou translucide, il est porteur de tout un imaginaire que les Anciens ont interrogé durant l’Antiquité gréco-romaine. Du sang du crime à celui du combat, du sacrifice à la mort du martyr, de la magie à la cuisine, un univers rouge semble ressortir de cette Antiquité fantasmée. Marqué du sceau de l’ambivalence, il a quelque chose de magique : porteur de vie et de mort, le sang signe les saisons du corps féminin et annonce la mort quand il sourd de la blessure du guerrier : il est le baromètre de la vie qui dit aussi la parenté. Clé de compréhension des cultures antiques, considéré au travers d’un large cadre géographique et chronologique, le sang offre une lecture tant historique qu’anthropologique des corps. Plusieurs dimensions ont été retenues : les pouvoirs du sang réels ou supposés, le sang vecteur de communication, le sang communautaire qui dit la filiation et l’appartenance du groupe et enfin la violence qui le fait couler. C’est une histoire du sensible qui est menée ici par le liquide biologique vital, par la couleur, celle du sang rouge ou noir, de la pourpre. C’est aussi une histoire sociale car, par le sang c’est la transmission, la descendance et la filiation, la souillure, la pureté, les rites que l’on observe ; c’est encore une histoire de la guerre, du crime et de la justice.

    Beschreibung: La technologie désigne bien souvent les « nouvelles technologies » et les « technosciences » qui réduisent la technique aux applications de la science. Pourtant, au xixe siècle, la technologie revêt un autre sens, celui d’une science de la technique, c’est-à-dire d’une science des arts et des intentions fabricatrices. Le caméralisme a joué un rôle fondamental dans l’édification de cette discipline dont l’un des textes fondateurs est l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie de Johann Beckmann (1806). Dans cet essai, Beckmann propose une science nouvelle, la technologie générale, qui classe les activités humaines par opérations. Maintes fois cité et jamais traduit, il fallait rendre disponible en français ce texte essentiel, qui a ouvert la voie à une compréhension générale de l’action et à la philosophie des techniques. Tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux savoirs de l’action trouveront chez Beckmann la tentative la plus aboutie de formalisation du geste comme unité fondamentale de l’activité humaine. Pour la première fois, l’Entwurf der algemeinen Technologie a fait l’objet d’une traduction menée par le regretté Joost Mertens, avec la collaboration de Guillaume Carnino et de Jochen Hoock. À l’occasion de cette publication et afin d’approfondir la réflexion sur le creuset européen de la technologie, une analyse est proposée au fil d’articles qui accompagnent la traduction. L’enjeu est d’une part d’étudier un milieu savant à travers sa formation, ses activités, ses techniques intellectuelles et d’autre part, d’interroger les résonances de la technologie.

    Beschreibung: Depuis un demi-siècle, la sociologie politique a mis l’accent sur la notion de « minorité » qu’ignoraient aussi bien l’Antiquité grecque que la France des Bourbons. Si les minorités religieuses sont donc une construction des sciences sociales, elles constituent cependant depuis des siècles des communautés dont on retrouve des caractéristiques à différentes époques. Le présent ouvrage envisage la place que tient la religion dans l’identité des minorités, à partir de trois axes : la spécificité de l’identité religieuse des minorités, puisque celles-ci se définissent selon d’autres critères (linguistiques, sociaux, politiques, etc.) que la religion ; la manière dont les minorités religieuses ont été observées et jugées par des personnes qui leur étaient extérieures (juristes, théologiens, voyageurs ou diplomates) ; les stratégies adoptées pour vivre sa différence. L’espace retenu est l’Europe et la Méditerranée, du ve siècle avant J.-C. à la fin du xviiie siècle. Cette zone, marquée par le développement des trois religions monothéistes, offre un cadre d’étude cohérent. Les historiens disposent de sources variées, qu’ils peuvent croiser, pour suivre l’évolution des relations entre des communautés qui s’y côtoient depuis des siècles.

    Beschreibung: L'apprentissage instrumental est un loisir culturel qui touche différemment les filles et les garçons, tant d'un point de vue quantitatif que qualitatif : les filles sont plus nombreuses et se rencontrent majoritairement en classes de piano et de cordes, alors que les garçons se retrouvent davantage aux instruments à vent et aux percussions. Par la suite, les deux sexes divergent du point de vue des formations d'orchestre fréquentées, des activités musicales pratiquées en dehors des cours, ainsi que des débouchés professionnels envisagés puis réellement investis. Mais comment devient-on la jeune fille modèle au piano ou l'adolescent viril à la batterie, et quel est l'impact de telles pratiques dans l'assimilation des normes de genre au sein des sociétés industrialisées contemporaines ? Existe-t-il des transgressions possibles, sous quelles formes et avec quelles conséquences pour l'apprentissage des rôles et des rapports sociaux de sexes ? Tiré d'une thèse de doctorat en anthropologie dirigée par Agnès Fine (EHESS), cet ouvrage analyse de façon ethnographique les parcours et les pratiques d'une trentaine d'apprentis musiciens des deux sexes, âgés entre 7 et 21 ans, dans deux établissements publics d'enseignement musical de profils sociologiques différents, ainsi qu'au sein de leurs formations et de leurs représentations amateurs et semi-professionnels.

    Beschreibung: La question de la censure, de ses modalités et de ses effets, semble inépuisable, et toutes les formes d’expression, que ce soit des textes (poésie, théâtre, roman, presse…) ou des images (peinture, photographie, cinéma…) sont susceptibles d’être à un moment ou à un autre les victimes de mesures censoriales plus ou moins sévères. Ce livre envisage les cas de l’Espagne, du Portugal et de divers pays d’Amérique Latine (Argentine et Uruguay) autour de trois thématiques : les pouvoirs et les censures de l’Ancien Régime au xxe siècle ; les dictatures face aux productions littéraires et cinématographiques : franquisme, salazarisme, dictatures latino-américaines ; langue et littérature : autocensures, oublis, manipulations. La question des stratégies à adopter face à la censure est au cœur de ce volume. Comment contourner la censure, s’y adapter et faire avec, comment pouvoir donc communiquer avec son public plus ou moins « librement » ? Les pratiques peuvent être variées et dépendre des situations concrètes, qu’il s’agisse de déplacement physique, de choix d’une autre langue ou d’effacement de repères concrets pouvant permettre de remonter jusqu’aux imprimeurs et auteurs de publications dont le contenu « hétérodoxe » peut faire l’objet de répression, en passant par l’autocensure, le jeu du possible qui peut permettre de faire naître des espaces de transgression. Brutale, souvent arbitraire, aveugle et polymorphe, la censure et ses agents sont rarement intelligents. La ruse, et donc la métaphore ou l’ellipse, devient alors une pratique obligatoire pour tenter de tromper les censeurs.

It’s HBO »), ce qui lui a permis d’asseoir le « troisième âge d’or » des séries américaines. Face à une concurrence de plus en plus aguerrie et protéiforme, elle continue aujourd’hui d’avancer et de donner naissance à des séries qui créent l’événement. Quelle est la profession de foi qui a permis à la chaîne de produire tant d’œuvres majeures de l’ère « post-network » ? Que nous révèle l’autre versant de ses propositions toujours plus hétéroclites, entre succès d’estime et échecs retentissants ? Comment propage-t-elle son image de marque à l’étranger depuis le début des années 1990 ? Quel regard porter sur la concurrence d’un genre nouveau qu’incarne Netflix, le géant américain du streaming qui s’est positionné dès janvier 2013 comme le « nouvel HBO » ? Autant de questions complexes qui nécessitent de se plonger dans les arcanes d’une chaîne qui a changé à jamais le visage de la série télévisée – et pas seulement aux États-Unis. Cet ouvrage est la première étude scientifique de grande ampleur consacrée à HBO en langue française. Combinant une réflexion d’ensemble et des micro-analyses de nombreuses séries de la chaîne, il nourrit plus largement une réflexion à la fois historique et esthétique sur la télévision américaine. Thierry Groensteen retrace l’histoire de cette idée depuis Lessing et décrit son apogée avec « l’idéologie de la pureté » consubstantielle au modernisme. Il montre comment le dépassement ou l’abandon de cette idéologie ne l’empêche pas de revenir nous hanter. À l’horizon de nos pratiques culturelles, en filigrane de nos jugements, persiste l’idée que chaque art a une puissance propre, un domaine d’excellence, et procure une qualité de plaisir qui n’appartient qu’à lui. Musique, littérature, arts plastiques, cinéma et bande dessinée sont convoqués tour à tour au long de cette méditation esthétique.

    Beschreibung: La mer et le désert, l’île et l’oasis, des objets qui entrent a priori assez rarement en relation mutuelle. Pourtant, depuis Hérodote, qui décrit les oasis du désert Libyque comme des « îles des Bienheureux », une connivence a souvent été entrevue entre ces deux entités, et le parallèle s’est prolongé jusqu’aux époques contemporaines. Ce volume rassemble les contributions de spécialistes de toutes les périodes historiques et de disciplines diverses, autour d’un rapprochement à la fois stimulant et porteur d’interrogations. Dans la continuité de l’ouvrage Mer et montagne dans la culture européenne, dirigé par A. Cabantous, J.-L. Chappey, N. Richard et F. Walter et paru aux PUR en 2011, les auteurs mettent en regard mer et désert en s’interrogeant tout d’abord sur le vécu de ces espaces : écrivains et voyageurs ont souvent comparé traversées au long cours et méharées, s’essayant parfois à une théorisation de ce rapprochement. Mais quelle est la portée heuristique d’une telle démarche ? Que peut-elle nous enseigner sur les espaces comparés ? Face à l’indétermination qui caractérise ces aires de marge, on identifie diverses tentatives technologiques et cartographiques, souvent convergentes, de réduire et traverser ces zones grises. En effet, en dépit de leur marginalité, ces espaces sont tissés de réseaux, maillés de ports insulaires ou caravaniers, dans ce qu’on a pu appeler, dans le cadre méditerranéen, la « connectivité » (Horden et Purcell). Enfin, l’actualité récente rappelle leur dimension stratégique sur le plan politique et économique. La problématique de la captation par les États des réseaux structurant ces espaces et des flux économiques qui leur sont propres va de pair avec les politiques de police des mers et des déserts, contre des populations présentées comme des pirates, mais qui n’en sont souvent que d’autres usagers. L’ouvrage vise à articuler des pratiques historiographiques aussi diverses que l’archéologie, l’histoire des migrations et de l’environnement, l’histoire des sciences, la géohistoire ou l’histoire des représentations, autour d’une approche inédite de la mer et du désert, en prise avec des problématiques contemporaines.

Mais au-delà du souvenir que ce matériel préservé peut susciter chez le public, ces collections techniques constituent un fonds de premier ordre pour approfondir notre connaissance de l’histoire des chemins de fer. Encore faut-il pouvoir localiser, identifier et interpréter ces objets et documents de natures variées. Dans cet ouvrage, Lionel Dufaux nous invite à découvrir le corpus ferroviaire de l’une des plus anciennes et importantes collections techniques du monde, au musée du Conservatoire national des arts et métiers. Créé pendant la Révolution française par la Convention, le Conservatoire devait réunir les objets, modèles, dessins, descriptions et livres utiles au perfectionnement de l’industrie nationale. Très vite, à l’aube du xixe siècle, l’institution s’est intéressée aux chemins de fer qui émergeaient alors outre-Manche. Les collections rassemblées depuis les années 1820 forment aujourd’hui un ensemble exceptionnel et sont de précieux témoignages de la naissance du chemin de fer en Europe, de son développement géographique et technique. Mais au-delà de l’histoire matérielle, c’est bien la question de la transmission des savoirs, gestes et pratiques techniques, et les mécanismes de diffusion de l’innovation qui transparaissent, offrant une nouvelle lecture de l’histoire des chemins de fer, éclairée de manière originale par des collections restées largement méconnues.

    Beschreibung: À la fin du XIXe siècle, les mines du Nord de la France se sont imposées comme une polarité nouvelle, attirant et agrégeant une main-d’œuvre tant locale que transfrontalière. Mais si ce maelström satisfait les puissantes compagnies, il n’en va pas de même pour les mineurs, dont l’engagement dans la lutte syndicale peine à se départir de ses récents échecs. Entre rancœur et lassitude, la base ouvrière décide de dépasser les cadres politiques, en se tournant non pas vers les chefs, cible attendue, mais vers l’Étranger : du 15 août au 20 septembre 1892, plus d’un millier d’ouvriers belges sont violemment traqués, attaqués puis chassés du bassin minier du Pas-de-Calais, sans autre issue que le retour vers la terre d’où ils étaient partis, quelques mois ou décennies plus tôt. Si cette expulsion collective épouse des formes anciennes de la contestation, toute explication semble se dérober à l’enquête, réduite au seul rôle répressif. La parole des mineurs ressemble à ce réel qui résiste, face aux mises en récits développées « par le haut » : est-ce la faute au nationalisme ? au protectionnisme ? au socialisme ? La concordance des temps de l’émeute, de la presse et du politique semble vaine. Pour l’historien, la vérité de ces obscures semaines erre dans le même ban que celui de ces ouvriers : conduits au silence, pour des raisons de paix sociale, suite à l’acquittement des inculpés français ; ou bien, condition de survie de toute nation selon Renan, à l’oubli suite à la naturalisation massive des Belges. Peu connus, ces événements mettent pourtant en avant une ambiguïté fondamentale de la gauche : la distorsion entre les actes des ouvriers et les espoirs qu’elle plaçait en eux. Cette gêne qui ne cesse de ressurgir est au cœur de cet ouvrage.

    Beschreibung: Depuis la « Découverte » de l’Amérique, une multiplicité de références européennes, américaines et africaines sont mises diversement à contribution dans la construction et reconstruction des imaginaires de l’identité collective en Amérique latine. Cette perpétuelle reconstruction des symboliques de l’auto-identification prend, pour l’essentiel, la forme d’un incessant va-et-vient d’images du même et de l’autre, qui, d’un continent à l’autre, sont sans cesse reprises, refusées, adaptées ou resignifiées à partir de contextes sociaux, culturels et politiques très variés. Dans la production littéraire ou historiographique comme dans les discours politiques ou la création artistique, ces constructions identitaires configurent diversement les rapports entre la diversité et l’unité, depuis l’opposition post-coloniale entre la « barbarie » et la « civilisation » jusqu’à la configuration moderne de la nation qui, identifiant l’unité à l’homogénéité, tend à effacer la diversité ou à la dégrader. En faisant jouer les ressources de l’interdisciplinarité, les diverses études qui composent cet ouvrage interrogent les concepts d’« identité » et de « nation », décrivent la genèse des imaginaires de l’identité dans les anciennes colonies espagnoles d’Amérique, examinent la fonction de ces imaginaires dans le cadre des interactions sociales à partir du XIXe siècle, analysent leurs modes de circulation et de réception, identifient des filiations, déplacements, ruptures, continuités et discontinuités tant au niveau des formes que des contenus. Elles entendent ainsi contribuer à l’élaboration d’une compréhension renouvelée de l’architecture complexe de l’imaginaire de la nation en Amérique latine, et, plus généralement, des processus de construction de l’imaginaire national.

    Beschreibung: La situation des juifs, partagés entre différentes identités nationales en formation en Europe centrale de la fin du xviiie siècle à la seconde guerre mondiale, est révélatrice des enjeux identitaires et politiques auxquels doivent faire face les minorités. La question de l’appartenance nationale se pose pour eux avec une acuité particulière, et ils apparaissent dès lors comme des individus au parcours à la fois singulier et paradigmatique. Les auteurs mettent en évidence à travers des chapitres consacrés à des personnalités emblématiques les mécanismes de la construction d’une identité personnelle dans un environnement complexe, qu’elle s’effectue dans la sphère privée ou publique, en passant par l’adhésion volontaire à une communauté, qu’elle soit culturelle ou politique. Les étapes de la construction d’identités apparaissent à travers des biographies qui s’inscrivent dans un vaste espace, depuis l’Europe centrale (Vienne, Prague, Budapest, Zagreb et Varsovie) jusqu’à Jérusalem et la Chine. Une masse exceptionnelle d'acteurs, de moyens de transports, d'intermédiaires, de capitaux, de produits alimentaires, de publications, et de bien d'autres choses encore ont dû être mobilisés pour garantir l’alimentation des dizaines de millions de visiteurs. Ce livre explore, par le biais d'une étude de la consommation alimentaire, la richesse des textures qui composent la profondeur sociale d'un grand événement d'envergure internationale. Cette plongée au cœur de la vie quotidienne des Expositions universelles ouvre un immense horizon d'analyse pour rendre compte de la complexité d'un monde social en ébullition. L'auteur y aborde notamment les pique-niques sur les pelouses des sites, les grands banquets, les réglementations sanitaires et administratives, les menus des restaurants gastronomiques, l'alimentation des colonisés aux exhibitions humaines, et les comptoirs d'exposition ou de dégustations de produits.     Beschreibung: Le mezcal est la boisson identitaire des Mexicains. Issu de la distillation de l’agave, ce spiritueux est encore très mal connu en dehors de son pays d’origine. Ignoré du grand public, le véritable mezcal exerce une fascination transculturelle auprès des connaisseurs du monde entier. Cette eau-de-vie est aujourd’hui l’un des spiritueux les plus en vogue. L’histoire du mezcal c’est aussi celle du Mexique. Cette boisson symbolise la quintessence de la culture mexicaine. La fabrication artisanale, la large palette aromatique et la production biologique font la spécificité de cet « enfant terrible du Mexique ». Le renouveau du mezcal prend sa source au Mexique et aux États-Unis. Son passage par les circuits culturels internationaux participe à sa découverte et sa légitimation. Distillé et consommé principalement par les populations indigènes d’origine rurale, il a longtemps été ignoré, voire méprisé par les élites qui aujourd’hui en sont particulièrement friandes. Ce livre analyse le processus de réhabilitation du mezcal. Il donne à voir la manière dont se construit son nouveau statut symbolique, révèle les contradictions liées au développement économique du Mexique. Par là même, il mesure l’évolution des rapports économiques et sociaux qui sous-tendent ce processus. La première partie de l'ouvrage se présente comme un essai théorique qui s'intéresse aux catégories particulières de techniques d'interprétations de sujets d'emblée engagés dans une histoire de vie. Le reste de l'ouvrage doit se lire comme une mise à l'épreuve empirique de ce projet théorique. Chaque chapitre compose le « roman vrai » d'une trajectoire biographique au cours de laquelle sont analysés les mises en intrigue de soi et les imaginaires sociaux, culturels et politiques. Les récits de vie portent plus précisément sur l'héritage de la guerre d'Algérie et de la migration algérienne en France. La thèse de l'ouvrage consiste à montrer que cet héritage ne cesse d'être transformé et reconfiguré au cours de l'existence, à la faveur de dispositifs actifs de réappropriation par les nouvelles générations. Les technologies de soi relèvent de cette part active de recomposition qui témoigne de la créativité et de l'inventivité de subjectivations ordinaires confrontées à des injonctions familiales et sociales parfois contradictoires, au « problème » de la « double culture », aux discriminations et aux stigmatisations sociales, au poids d'une guerre qui peine parfois à dire son nom.

    Beschreibung: Le métier de céramiste d’art, exercé par des créateurs travaillant en leur nom propre, s’est constitué en France au milieu du xxe siècle et encore davantage dans l’après-1968. Aujourd’hui, les céramistes forment un groupe bien défini car ils s’accordent sur ce qu’est un « bon professionnel » sur le plan technique et esthétique, mais aussi moral. En effet, le travail est envisagé d’une manière extensive, comme un style de vie, voire une « alternative » (à la ville, au travail salarié, aux mondes de l’art dans ses formes les plus élitistes…). Il met ainsi à l’épreuve les possibilités de vivre différemment, hors des sentiers battus et de ce que certains enquêtés associent à une forme d’emprise des institutions étatiques. Ce livre interroge les conditions d’une réalisation – individuelle et collective – par le travail indépendant : comment relier des visions du monde, des styles de vie et des modes de régulation du travail ? À partir d’une enquête principalement ethnographique, cet ouvrage restitue les voies empruntées par différentes générations de céramistes pour créer un groupe social et professionnel à l’image du sens qu’ils donnent au travail et à leurs modes de vie.

    Beschreibung: Le sacre du roquefort est l'histoire d'un produit emblématique et d'une aventure entrepreneuriale hors du commun au xixe siècle. Ce fromage, fabriqué dans le sud du département de l'Aveyron et affiné dans les caves du village dont il porte le nom depuis le xviie siècle est à certains égards une énigme. De Tokyo à Millau, il ne laisse personne indifférent et symbolise un certain art de vivre alimentaire, opposé aux dégâts de la « mal bouffe ». Adoré ou décrié, il s'identifie à la France. Certes, il n'est pas seul dans ce cas : le camembert, comme nombre de fromages, le vin, avec le champagne en particulier, sont fréquemment associés au pays de la gastronomie. Cependant, si le succès d'un fromage se mesure à l'aune de sa réputation, force est de constater que le roquefort a parfaitement réussi. Il le doit pour une grande part à Roquefort Société. Comment cette entreprise, née au xixe siècle, a-t-elle réussi à imposer dans l'imaginaire collectif un fromage moisi, veiné de ridules bleu-vert, à l’odeur et au goût très marqués et ce, sur presque tous les continents, alors que le roquefort est toujours affiné dans le sud du département de l'Aveyron ? Une telle interrogation est à l’origine de ce livre, qui s'ouvre avec les premiers succès du fromage à la fin du xviiie siècle et s'achève en 1925 avec l'AOC.

Au prix d’un patient travail de contextualisation, les auteurs apportent des éléments nouveaux sur ses usages par les réguliers comme par leurs bienfaiteurs.     Beschreibung: Nos sociétés modernes n’ont cessé de se questionner sur la place et le sens du travail. Cette très ancienne question est récemment encore réapparue dans le débat public : ce débat concerne la place du travail dans nos vies, le manque de travail pour les uns, la surcharge de travail pour les autres, les formes que revêt celui-ci, plus récemment la nature des transformations de la relation d’emploi et du rapport salarial. Une mise à distance par l’histoire des faits et des idées peut permettre de décentrer notre regard du vécu immédiat pour resituer le débat sur le travail dans l’univers riche et complexe des possibles. Revisiter à ce sujet les auteurs classiques ou plus contemporains, analyser leurs interrogations relatives à l’action, au faire, à l’effort, à l’oeuvre et au travail, est une voie privilégiée pour interroger le devenir de nos sociétés. C’est l’hypothèse que veut valider le présent ouvrage, recueil de contributions d’universitaires et de chercheurs spécialistes de l’histoire de la pensée et des faits économiques et sociaux. La première partie consacrée à l’invention du travail illustre divers aspects de la réalité du travail avant la révolution industrielle, puis réinterprète la pensée de Locke, de Rousseau et des physiocrates. La deuxième partie aborde le double problème de l’aliénation et de l’exploitation, au coeur des réflexions des philosophes et des économistes du xviiie et du xixe siècle. La troisième partie aborde plus largement la question sociale et en particulier les aspects du droit au repos et de l’organisation du marché du travail.

    Beschreibung: Véritable essai d’histoire transnationale du handicap, cet ouvrage reconstitue la genèse et le développement des politiques internationales du handicap au cours du xxe siècle. Il met au jour les premières actions développées au cours de l’entre-deux-guerres par les institutions intergouvernementales (OIT, SDN, OH) en faveur de certaines catégories d’infirmes (mutilés de guerre, accidentés du travail, aveugles), puis l’unification des politiques de réadaptation des « handicapés » sous l’égide de l’ONU après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dégageant les enjeux géopolitiques liés à la guerre froide, il montre comment l’ONU, l’OIT et l’OMS promeuvent au début des années 1950 un projet de modernisation de la réadaptation qui s’inspire des expériences des pays anglo-saxons et nordiques, légitimant l’insertion professionnelle des personnes handicapées selon des principes libéraux. L’ouvrage cerne les mécanismes et les limites de l’internationalisation de ce projet de modernisation de la réadaptation, à travers trois pays (Argentine, Brésil, Espagne) ayant bénéficié de l’assistance technique de l’ONU, de l’OIT et de l’OMS dans le domaine de la réadaptation entre 1956 et 1959. Des experts internationaux sont alors missionnés dans ces trois pays pour promouvoir des politiques de réadaptation inspirées des expériences des pays anglo-saxons et nordiques.

    Beschreibung: Ce livre prend pour objet les représentations d’un massacre colonial, la répression sanglante de tirailleurs sénégalais, ces soldats ouest-africains de l’Empire français, survenue au camp de Thiaroye, à proximité de Dakar, le 1er décembre 1944. Plus de soixante-dix ans après les faits, cet événement reste un sujet de controverse historiographique. Ce qui a longtemps été considéré par l’armée française comme une mutinerie apparaît plutôt comme une tuerie organisée par les officiers coloniaux présents à Dakar. Fruit d’un long et patient travail sur les archives de ce drame, cet ouvrage retrace les réappropriations passées et actuelles de cet événement au Sénégal, à travers diverses temporalités permettant de lire la trajectoire de la nation sénégalaise postcoloniale en suivant la mobilisation d’imaginaires historiques. Aujourd’hui, au Sénégal, les représentations attachées à l’événement du 1er décembre 1944 apparaissent comme un des paradigmes de la mémoire coloniale. Décrire ces usages du passé sur plusieurs décennies permet alors d’envisager l’articulation entre des mémoires dominantes – officielles ou non –, des formes particulières de rappel du passé et le rôle de ce passé dans certaines dynamiques identitaires.

    Beschreibung: Durant la Renaissance, le dialogue est partout, dans tous les champs du savoir et de l'expression « littéraire » comme dans tous les pays d'Europe. Ses formes sont d'une déconcertante diversité, s'adaptant et se déployant selon des temporalités elles-mêmes très variables. L'on pourrait s'amuser à dire, en partant du constat qu'il faut attendre le dernier tiers du XVIe siècle pour voir apparaître ses premières théorisations (Carlo Sigonio, Sperone Speroni, Torquato Tasso), que, pendant longtemps, s'il est partout, le dialogue n'est à proprement parler nulle part : il reste sans territoire défini, ni même sans doute définissable, dans l'univers des genres de l'écrit et a fortiori dans ses relevés cartographiques. Sans territoire circonscrit au sens propre non plus, puisque né dans sa forme « moderne » en Italie (avec Pétrarque comme initiateur), mais en un âge que caractérisent la densité et la continuité des échanges entre lettrés de différentes « nations », il semble étendre inexorablement et durablement son aire d'extension. Absolument et définitivement sans territoire ? L'observateur attentif pourra cependant distinguer des « couleurs locales » : outre le cas, italien, le mieux connu sans doute, le plus logiquement marqué par des studia humanitatis, y aurait-il un filon espagnol, marqué par un esprit de sérieux couplé à la promotion résolue des langues vulgaires, castillan au premier chef, et volontiers tourné vers les horizons géographiques nouveaux ? Une veine française, très sensible à l'hybridation, voire à la déconstruction ? Et qu'en est-il des aires laissées de côté, l'anglophone notamment ?

    Beschreibung: Fin 1989-début 1990, l’impensable se produit : l’effondrement de l’Union soviétique signe l’arrêt de mort de la République Populaire de Mongolie. La nouvelle constitution adoptée 1992 instaure une démocratie parlementaire et une économie de marché en lieu et place de l’idéologie marxiste-léniniste. Ce mouvement voit naître une revitalisation sans précédent d’un sentiment nationaliste étroitement corrélé à une quête des racines. La recherche des traditions occupe dès lors une place centrale dans la définition d’une identité mongole ; Gengis Khan devient la figure de référence. Un immense enthousiasme conduit les intellectuels à jouer un rôle majeur dans ce mouvement de l’histoire : Sendenjav Dulam est de ceux-là. Fils d’éleveurs, ethnographe, spécialiste de mythologie, de chamanisme et de symboles, poète, ce grand chercheur occupe des fonctions politiques et des responsabilités au sein du Comité d’organisation des grandes célébrations « traditionnelles » nationales. Son exceptionnel témoignage rend compte d’une culture en mouvement tiraillée entre des modèles contradictoires et fait entrer le lecteur dans la vie quotidienne des nomades et des Mongols contemporains. S. Dulam retrace ici le sens d’une vie consacrée à la recherche et au service de l’Etat. Il démonte les mécanismes de sa contribution à la mise en forme des symboles nécessaires à la construction de la nation, mais il livre aussi ses doutes et ses positions face aux profondes mutations contemporaines.

Telle a été la question complexe étudiée lors du colloque dont le présent volume recueille une sélection de communications. Délibérément attachés à l’étude des sources religieuses de la liberté de conscience, les textes ici réunis constituent autant de contributions à l’étude de la part du fait religieux dans l’émergence de la liberté de et des consciences, c’est-à-dire, aussi bien dans l’acception subjective que dans l’acception objective de cette liberté. Dans une perspective résolument orientée en diachronie longue, l’ouvrage met au jour les questions récurrentes et leur évolution; les courants religieux favorisant l’individualisme et le contact personnel avec le monde divin ; les médiateurs (prédication, images religieuses, imprimé…) ; les points d’application dans la société sur les plans religieux et politique ; les discours et modalités énonciatives selon lesquels se développe le for intérieur, de manière à moduler l’affirmation d’une subjectivité spirituelle autonome. Sont ainsi mises au jour des étapes significatives aussi bien de la réflexion sur cette liberté que des manifestations qui contribuent à l’éclairer.

    Beschreibung: Un temps oubliée, décriée, ridiculisée, la révolution est aujourd’hui à nouveau un problème politique clé. Outre le Printemps arabe, Occupy Wall Street, Nuit debout, ainsi que les commémorations d’Octobre 17 et de Mai 68 qui en ont réactivé l’imaginaire (voire le désir), un nombre croissant de romans, de récits, de pièces de théâtre et de recueils de poésie contemporains ont pour thème l’insurrection, le soulèvement et la révolte. Une bibliographie comprenant une cinquantaine de titres permet d’en mesurer l’importance. Cette présence de la révolution dans le champ culturel contemporain nous enjoint à reprendre une question posée il y a près d’un siècle par Léon Trotsky, à savoir : comment penser les rapports entre littérature et révolution ? De Jack London au Comité invisible, en passant entre autres par Alfred Döblin, Louis Aragon, Jean Genet et Pierre Michon, cet ouvrage interroge la manière dont les révolutions politiques (réelles ou imaginées, passées ou projetées) ont suscité des configurations et des questionnements esthétiques depuis le début du xxe siècle. Quelles relations entretiennent, dans ces textes, le poétique et le politique ? L’écrivain et le révolutionnaire ? La fiction et l’action ? Aux différentes contributions qui esquissent des réponses à ces interrogations s’ajoutent trois entretiens avec des écrivains (Arno Bertina, Leslie Kaplan, Nathalie Quintane) dont l’œuvre littéraire trame à nouveaux frais la question politique.

    Beschreibung: Cette étude porte sur la culture chansonnière des mouvements de compagnonnages, du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Elle se présente sous la forme d'une vaste enquête inédite, de nature à la fois historique, musicologique et ethnologique ; aboutissement de plusieurs années de recherches sur un riche matériau issu d'archives publiques et privées, de collections bibliographiques et muséographiques, d'entretiens ethnographiques. En opérant une plongée dans la pratique chansonnière des compagnons du Tour de France, ce livre examine ce que « chanter » signifie pour des collectifs de travailleurs manuels, constitués d'individus autodidactes de la musique. La chanson compagnonnique, finement inscrite dans des pratiques sociales propres, y est un art de la profération, un art incarné dont l'identité ne se définit pas tant en fonction de l'ancienneté, des paroles ou du corpus musical de référence. Ce qui compte avant tout, c'est la participation de cet art au « commun idéal » compagnon. Restituer le visage authentique du chansonnier compagnonnique au sens large, c'est étudier l'extériorisation chantée d'une société discrète et mettre au jour un répertoire et des pratiques qui apportent un éclairage inédit sur l'histoire du compagnonnage français. Ces chants, adoptés et transmis de manière privilégiée sur le temps long, ont en effet nourri un imaginaire collectif très dynamique qui constitue, comme le montre la recherche actuelle, un acteur essentiel de l'histoire sociale.

The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences.

    Beschreibung: Tandis que depuis un demi-siècle la « mondialisation culturelle » ne cesse d’être louée pour ses supposées vertus démocratiques ou contestée pour ses présumées logiques impérialistes, ses rouages sociaux restent étonnamment méconnus. Si son économie politique est régulièrement discutée, les professionnels de l’internationalisation des biens culturels et médiatiques ont, eux, fait l’objet de peu d’attention. Qui sont ces femmes et ces hommes au cœur de l’import-export des biens symboliques ? Comment en viennent-ils à (s’)investir à l’international, avec quelles ressources, en poursuivant quels enjeux et en tenant compte de quelles contraintes ? Quels intérêts inséparablement sociaux et nationaux engagent-ils dans leurs métiers ? La partie visible des échanges symboliques à l’international, souvent teintée d’économisme et de technologisme, dissimule en fait une compétition sociale entre différentes fractions des champs du pouvoir. À rebours des approches culturalistes, cet ouvrage éclaire les hiérarchies sociales au principe de l’inégale circulation internationale des biens culturels. Tout le monde n’a pas les moyens de jouer le jeu de la « mondialisation », de se mobiliser par-delà les frontières ou de faire un usage distinctif des livres et films étrangers. Si concurrence il y a, elle met sans doute moins à partie des pays que des catégories sociales. Le montrer empiriquement c’est aussi lutter contre les clichés différencialistes qui, en essentialisant et en figeant les cultures, font le lit des visions xénophobes. Les différentes contributions étayent donc cette perspective. Elles expliquent comment il est possible et pourquoi il est important, de saisir les dynamiques structurelles et les rapports de domination qui orientent les processus d’internationalisation médiatique. Ainsi, ce livre collectif espère être utile aux étudiants et chercheurs analysant la construction sociale et historique des échanges internationaux de biens symboliques. Mais au-delà, l’ouvrage s’adresse à l’ensemble des agents concernés par ces questions et entend leur suggérer des clefs pour interpréter autrement ce qui est en jeu lorsqu’ils sont confrontés « à l’international ».
