    Description: This book provides unique insights into how health professionals and people with Parkinson’s disease shape care together. It shows both the courage and vulnerabilities of those who have to face this disease. It consists of photos of people with Parkinson’s disease and their care professionals, both of their interaction and portrayed individually, interwoven with fragments of their dialogue about meaningful care. This book is an integral part of a research project at Radboud university medical center into person-centred care. With it, we hope to contribute to a positive, hopeful vision of ever-improving Parkinson’s care.

    Description: Contrairement à une idée répandue, l'école de Jules Ferry n'est pas une invention made in France qui se serait élaborée en vase clos. Comme pour la plupart des espaces pédagogiques qui se consolident durant le XIXe siècle, les structures scolaires mises en place sous la IIIe République résultent d'un jeu d'absorptions et de réinterprétations de références étrangères. En décloisonnant ces espaces pour reformuler des connexions oubliées, cet ouvrage propose une relecture des relations (pédagogiques) franco-suisses. Dans ce sens, il répond à la nécessité de réévaluer l'histoire des nations occidentales afin d'en éclairer les racines étrangères et les dettes culturelles. Accepter que notre histoire soit aussi celle des autres constitue assurément un défi de taille pour l'ego-citoyen du XXIe siècle.

    Description: This book discusses and analyses global policies and practices aimed at promoting equity in higher education participation and attainment. Although the massification of higher education systems has facilitated the participation of students from deprived backgrounds, socioeconomic inequalities persist in access to the most prestigious institutions and programmes. Privileged students benefit from a number of advantages in the competition for selective and scarce places: access to information, lower aversion to debt, higher expectations, better previous schooling and higher academic achievement. The chapters present a critical analysis of equity policies in different countries – with or without affirmative action policies, within a context of neoliberal policies or within a social democratic model – and the reasons why they have failed to promote equity and fairness, preventing students from achieving their full educational potential. This is an open access book.

    Description: This chapter analyses how writing and writing development has been and currently is prescribed and enacted in the curriculum for Danish as a subject (L1) in Years 1–9. Highlighting historical points of impact for writing in curricula from the early–nineteenth century through frequent reforms in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, we focus empirically on the 2014 ruling curricular document Common Standards and auxiliary documents framing writing assessment at the school-leaving exam, as well as empirical classroom studies. Analyses of steering documents indicate that there has been an unprecedented push towards outcome-based and competence-oriented writing curricula. Following Ivanič's Discourses of Writing (DoW) framework, process writing is found to be the most dominant discourse from Grades 1–7. The analysis of the enacted writing curriculum, which focuses on empirical studies from 2009 until now, reveals that the enacted curriculum is misaligned with the prescriptive curriculum and tends to position the student in ambiguous ways—from joyful writer to a writer tested in high-stakes exams. For discussion, we call for a more coherent writing curriculum. Methodologically, we argue that the DoW framework needs to be complemented with a Nordic Bildung tradition, which accentuates personal formation, and a multimodal framework informing the Danish curriculum.

Sans jamais sombrer dans le misérabilisme ni dans l’idéologie progressiste des intellectuels militants qu’il a fréquentés d’abord, il anticipe brillamment d'une génération sur l’explosion globale des littératures ‘dalit’ mais sans pour autant être intégré à celles-ci. Seul, ignoré ou admiré, il reste largement à découvrir. Son œuvre de fiction, ni réaliste ni populiste, est d’une précision clinique. Le talent de l’écrivain, très conscient mais rebelle à toute théorisation, consiste à peindre en l'éclairant de la lumière la plus crue, sous des angles variés mais toujours impitoyables, la société dans laquelle il situe une action exorcisée de toute métaphysique comme de tout misérabilisme, imperméable à toute sensiblerie, une vision du monde à travers ses soubassements. C’est par en-dessous qu’il en lait découvrir les mécanismes, intéressé par les manipulateurs de tous calibres, petits truqueurs ou ‘brokers’ parvenus, autant et plus que par leurs victimes, fasciné par la complexité des comportements humains et de leur enchaînement.

    Description: La loi du 28 mars 1882, celle-même qui établit l’obligation d’instruction et la laïcité des enseignements, prévoit l’introduction dans les programmes obligatoires de l’école primaire des sciences physiques et naturelles. Quel sens peut avoir pour l’école républicaine cette nouveauté ? N’est-ce que l’aboutissement normal d’une scolarisation primaire organisée depuis Guizot, ou bien est-ce un indice significatif du "nouveau régime" que Jules Ferry annonçait pour l’école ? Rupture ou continuité ? L’analyse fait apparaître une tension remarquable entre la réalité des prescriptions (textes officiels, programmes, etc.), qui maintiennent les sciences dans la tradition modeste et utilitaire de l’école du peuple, et les représentations idéales d’un projet éducatif et culturel qui se veut inédit et qui tend à enrôler l’enseignement scientifique primaire au service de l’humanisme moral, rationaliste, laïque et scientiste qui a marqué la IIIe République naissante.     Description: This book illustrates hitherto unexamined connections between the present state of teacher education in the UK and past models of practice. It locates contemporary debates within ongoing historical tensions over what constitutes a sound and proper start to a career in teaching. Questions as to the constituents of a professional training, the essential skills, knowledge and attitudes desired of an effective teacher, the most suitable locus of expertise, the relative roles of participants, and the balance of theory and practice lie at the heart of this book. The book reviews apprenticeship and teach-exemplar models of training, expert-novice relationships, model and demonstration teaching, school-based practice and the elaboration of core pedagogical principles in educational debate and research. These developments are assessed against recent initiatives in ITT, such as partnership models of ITT, school-based mentoring, advanced skills teaching, training schools, a standards-driven model of assessment for student teachers and models of effective teaching. Central to the book is the concept of the power to teach. By reclaiming this notion, the book offers challenging new perspectives on current policy and practice in teacher education today and adds to existing histories of teacher training of the past.

    Description: There is increasing evidence that the first few years after birth are particularly important in child development and present opportunities for enrichment but also vulnerabilities do to poverty and other social stressors. Elected officials have begun proposing potentially costly programs to intervene early in the lives of disadvantaged children. Have such interventions been demonstrated to yield substantial benefits? To what extent might they pay for themselves through lower welfare and criminal justice costs incurred by participating children as they grow into adults? This study synthesizes the results of a number of previous evaluations in an effort to answer those questions. Conclusions are that under carefully controlled conditions, early childhood interventions can yield substantial advantages to recipients in terms of emotional and cognitive development, education, economic well-being, and health. (The latter two benefits apply to the children's families as well.) If these interventions can be duplicated on a large scale, the costs of the programs could be exceeded by subsequent savings to the government. However, the more carefully the interventions are targeted to children most likely to benefit, the more likely it is that savings will exceed costs. Unfortunately, these conclusions rest on only a few methodologically sound studies. The authors argue for broader demonstrations accompanied by rigorous evaluations to resolve several important unknowns. These include the most efficient ways to design and target programs, the extent to which effectiveness is lost on scale-up, and the implications of welfare reform and other safety net changes.

    Description: La modernisation au Brésil se confond avec la constitution du pays. La forme qu'elle y assume se dessine de façon décisive au moment même de l'indépendance en 1822 et se reproduit en temps que modernisation conservatrice tout au long des deux siècles suivants. C'est ainsi qu'elle donne le sentiment d'osciller entre un changement qui ne respecte que peu de limites et la persistance du passé. Cette modernisation à la fois vertigineuse et toujours incomplète a souvent été dramatique, faisant parfois disparaître les marques qui auraient permis de l'évaluer. La conscience culturelle perd alors pied lorsque l'on envisage la portée et le sens des transformations qui l'affectent. La meilleure littérature brésilienne n'a jamais cessé de travailler ces formes contradictoires. C'est sous cet angle que les examinent deux équipes française et brésilienne, dans le cadre d'un accord Usp-Cofecub, en essayant de mettre en lumière les rapports qui s'établissent entre la forme littéraire et le processus social. Elles se sont concentrées sur certains moments où ce rythme particulier se donne à voir avec plus de netteté : le début de la République, l'immigration et l'industrialisation des années 20 puis les transformations post-1945. Trois axes thématiques ordonnent la quinzaine d'études contenues dans le présent volume : regards sur la ville, écriture et idéologie, lyrique et modernité.

    Description: Comment se dire dans son temps quand l'histoire invente l'individu en même temps qu'elle le malmène ? De Waterloo aux Mémoires d'outre-tombe, la publication de mémoires est un phénomène éditorial qui fait parler à l'époque de « fièvre » ou de « manie ». Parmi ces textes, seul le grand œuvre de Chateaubriand aurait eu la grâce, sanctionnée par une postérité toujours active, de transformer en or littéraire le modèle d'écriture pratiqué dans le tout-venant des mémoires. Les moins mal connus de ces derniers sont les mémoires de Fouché, de la duchesse d'Abrantès, de madame de Genlis et les Mémoires d'une Contemporaine. Le succès de ces textes en leur temps n'a d'égal que l'oubli dans lequel ils sont rapidement tombés, dès la seconde moitié du xixe siècle : victimes du divorce, consommé à ce moment-là, entre histoire et littérature. Occulté depuis plus d'un siècle, l'énorme corpus de la mémoire historique publiée entre 1815 et 1848 existe comme un continent englouti. Le mettre au jour, c'est non seulement ressusciter une bonne part du discours de l'époque, mais plus encore observer comment ont été amenés à se rencontrer et donc à se réinventer les modèles de l'expression de soi et de l'histoire. La prose des mémoires est comme un laboratoire où, dans les conditions d'existence nouvelles créées par la Révolution, l'écriture de soi, celle de l'histoire et aussi celle du roman se découvrent partie liée.

    Description: Quelles sont les relations entre les deux genres complexes, variés et changeants que constituent les romans grecs anciens et la poésie, épique, lyrique, dramatique, d’époque archaïque, classique, hellénistique ? Ce recueil de dix-sept articles, issus d’un colloque tenu à Nice en 2013, ouvre à nouveaux frais ce dossier. Au-delà des influences et intertextualités, quatre domaines sont étudiés : lien entre images et figures poétiques et romanesques ; jeux de références, lectures, réécritures ; effets de rythme et jeux de structure ; roman comme poésie et poésie comme roman. Chaque aspect fait l’objet d’approches à la fois théoriques et appliquées, présentant un état des lieux critique et proposant des perspectives renouvelées, voire des interrogations originales.     Description: Ni école, ni courant clairement identifié, le « nuevo teatro español » rassemble un groupe hétérogène d'auteurs dramatiques espagnols nés entre 1922 et 1942-1944 qu'anime la volonté d'écrire un théâtre en liberté, théâtre de résistance et de subversion esthétiques et politiques, dans le contexte « agonique » de la dernière décennie du franquisme. Les symboles, les valeurs, la langue et les rituels du franquisme sont particulièrement mis à mal dans des cérémonials sacrificiels et sadomasochistes, ludiques et parodiques, où la passion du pouvoir trouve à s'exprimer à travers les scénarios fantasmatiques les plus délirants et transgressifs. Au cours de véritables bacchanales théâtrales et linguistiques, ces auteurs mêlent les figures carnavalesques, christiques et dionysiaques comme conjuration du théâtre mortifère de la scène franquiste où les cérémonials se succèdent : cérémonials de l'auto-glorification de l'autocrate, défilés commémoratifs (18 juillet), cérémonials sacrificiels (répression, torture, exécutions), scénographies urbaines et monumentales grandioses. Défini tantôt comme théâtre underground, tantôt comme théâtre « symboliste », il est surtout un théâtre rituel grotesque néobaroque au ton blasphématoire et à l'esprit d'insolence et de désobéissance. Sont étudiés ici les univers dramaturgiques de quatre de ces auteurs qui participent à la fois de ces trois ordres esthético-politiques : Luis Riaza (1925), Francisco Nieva (1927), Antonio Martínez Ballesteros (1929) et Miguel Romero Esteo (1930).

    Description: This Open Access book analyses the interplay between governing, evaluation and knowledge with an empirical focus on Swedish higher education. It investigates the origins, logics, and mechanisms of evaluation and quality assurance reforms and their dynamic interactions with institutional, national and European policy contexts. The chapters report findings from extensive empirical studies that offer detailed insight into the work of governing in higher education, by giving voice to actors at various levels and positions including the ministry, national agency and University employees. Central themes include the influence of European policy, changing system designs, media relations and quality assurance enactments in University institutions. The book also explores the ways in which an emerging professional cadre, labelled qualocrats, enacts and mediates evaluation and quality assurance policy and practice. Taken together, the expanding evaluation machinery in Swedish higher education highlights the pivotal role of knowledge as a governing resource, and points to special features of evaluation as a particular form of practice that makes knowledge work for governing.

    Description: This open access book includes a series of relevant policy research articles, elaborared in the framework of the “Quality in higher education: internationalisation and databases to enhance the Romanian education system” project, implemented by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (UEFISCDI), together with the Ministry of Education. The project aims to develop and implement systemic measures at tertiary education level, leading to an increased quality of the overall higher education system and universities better prepared for labour market requirements and international standards. The book focuses on areas of interest for Romanian higher education, such as systemic measures to improve access, participation and completion for (vulnerable) students, better promotion of the Romanian higher education to attract students, as well as instruments for a more efficient use of data at higher education level. Each article includes evidence-based policy proposals that could support new strategic initiatives in higher education, including new legislation. Additionally, the collection of articles tells a comprehensive story about the audacity of a higher education system which went through significant challenges to align itself with both European and international trends, as well as respond to national imperatives. Over the last three decades, since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Romanian higher education has undergone significant transformations, aiming to align itself to the latest developments and trends at European and international level. The National Law on Education no. 1/2011 has set the stage for a full implementation of the Bologna Process action lines, taking into account that Romania was already a part of the largest European intergovernmental process – currently the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) – as a founding member. However, since the adoption of this normative framework, the law suffered numerous amendments, making it challenging to observe and achieve coherence in its implementation. Furthermore, Romania is also currently redesigning the strategy for the alocation of European structural funds 2021-2027, based on two strategic documents - the new Education and Employment Operational Programme and the National Recovery and Resilience Plan which highlight the reform and investment priorities at a national level. At the same time, 2021 is a good time to analyze the level of implementation for the objectives and measures included in the National Strategy for Tertiary Education 2015-2020, the Europe 2020 Strategy, and the Bologna Process action lines in the 2010 – 2020 timeframe. Therefore, the present moment may be an important time to assess the impact of strategic documents and actions in the last decade and, possibly, to draft a new National Education Law, better adapted to current realities, starting from the recent initiative by the President of Romania – the Educated Romania strategic vision which was also politically assumed by the Romanian Government.

    Description: For about two decades, say Johnson and Pace, the discussion of how to address prose style in teaching college writing has been stuck, with style standing in as a proxy for other stakes in the theory wars. The traditional argument is evidently still quite persuasive to some-that teaching style is mostly a matter of teaching generic conventions through repetition and practice. Such a position usually presumes the traditional view of composition as essentially a service course, one without content of its own. On the other side, the shortcomings of this argument have been much discussed-that it neglects invention, revision, context, meaning, even truth; that it is not congruent with research; that it ignores 100 years of scholarship establishing composition's intellectual territory beyond "service." The discussion is stuck there, and all sides have been giving it a rest in recent scholarship. Yet style remains of vital practical interest to the field, because everyone has to teach it one way or another. A consequence of the impasse is that a theory of style itself has not been well articulated. Johnson and Pace suggest that moving the field toward a better consensus will require establishing style as a clearer subject of inquiry. Accordingly, this collection takes up a comprehensive study of the subject. Part I explores the recent history of composition studies, the ways it has figured and all but effaced the whole question of prose style. Part II takes to heart Elbow's suggestion that composition and literature, particularly as conceptualized in the context of creative writing courses, have something to learn from each other. Part III sketches practical classroom procedures for heightening students' abilities to engage style, and part IV explores new theoretical frameworks for defining this vital and much neglected territory. The hope of the essays here-focusing as they do on historical, aesthetic, practical, and theoretical issues-is to awaken composition studies to the possibilities of style, and, in turn, to rejuvenate a great many classrooms.

    Description: The topic of embedded literacy, closely connected to embedded learning on one hand, and training in the workplace on the other, is a central theme for reflection on adult education in Europe and around the world. The Council of Europe indicates knowledge as a pivotal element for the economic and social development of the EU countries and the workplace is an important place for the learning and production of know-how and knowledge. The problem of achieving the competences needed for entering the current labour market concerns a large part of the adult population. And this is where embedded literacy comes in, a topic which the volume tries to deal with from a twofold viewpoint: through theoretical reflection outlining the theme against the development of the European labour market, and reflection on hands-on experiences resulting from a project financed by the European Community called CELiNE, Content Embedded Literacy Education for the New Economy, carried out between 2007-2009.

    Description: This open access report explores the nature and extent of students’ misconceptions and misunderstandings related to core concepts in physics and mathematics and physics across grades four, eight and 12. Twenty years of data from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and TIMSS Advanced assessments are analyzed, specifically for five countries (Italy, Norway, Russian Federation, Slovenia, and the United States) who participated in all or almost all TIMSS and TIMSS Advanced assessments between 1995 and 2015. The report focuses on students’ understandings related to gravitational force in physics and linear equations in mathematics. It identifies some specific misconceptions, errors, and misunderstandings demonstrated by the TIMSS Advanced grade 12 students for these core concepts, and shows how these can be traced back to poor foundational development of these concepts in earlier grades. Patterns in misconceptions and misunderstandings are reported by grade, country, and gender. In addition, specific misconceptions and misunderstandings are tracked over time, using trend items administered in multiple assessment cycles. The study and associated methodology may enable education systems to help identify specific needs in the curriculum, improve inform instruction across grades and also raise possibilities for future TIMSS assessment design and reporting that may provide more diagnostic outcomes.

    Description: This open access book offers both conceptual and empirical descriptions of how to “frame” sustainability challenges. It defines “framing” in the context of sustainability science as the process of identifying subjects, setting boundaries, and defining problems. The chapters are grouped into two sections: a conceptual section and a case section. The conceptual section introduces readers to theories and concepts that can be used to achieve multiple understandings of sustainability; in turn, the case section highlights different ways of comprehending sustainability for researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. The book offers diverse illustrations of what sustainability concepts entail, both conceptually and empirically, and will help readers become aware of the implicit framings in sustainability-related discourses. In the extant literature, sustainability challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and rapid urbanization have largely been treated as “pre-set,” fixed topics, while possible solutions have been discussed intensively. In contrast, this book examines the framings applied to the sustainability challenges themselves, and illustrates the road that led us to the current sustainability discourse.

    Description: This open access methodological book summarises existing analysing techniques using data from PIAAC, a study initiated by the OECD that assesses key cognitive and occupational skills of the adult population in more than 40 countries. The approximately 65 PIAAC datasets that has been published worldwide to date has been widely received and used by an interdisciplinary research community. Due to the complex structure of the data, analyses with PIAAC datasets are very challenging. To ensure the quality and significance of these data analyses, it is necessary to instruct users in the correct handling of the data. This methodological book provides a standardised approach to successfully implementing these data analyses. It contains examples of and tools for the analysis of the PIAAC data using different statistical approaches and software, and it offers perspectives from various disciplines. While Covid-19 demonstrated some of the benefits of online learning, the widespread, often uncritical adoption of online tools driven by necessity has left many with an experience of ‘emergency online learning’. This book aims to assist in the design of technology-enhanced capacity development by sharing evidence of practices that are principled rather than rushed; inclusive rather than creating new digital divides. We have worked to evidence how technology can be leveraged effectively to enhance or strengthen capacities of individuals, teams or systems. We make clear that there are no magic bullets, that online approaches are not simply quicker or cheaper substitutes, and that solutions need to be selected carefully, designed well, and significant time invested if it is to work well.     Description: Despite positive attitudes towards mathematics, it must be assumed that mathematics anxiety is a factor not to be underestimated in (pre-service) early childhood teachers. In the first part, this article reviews the current international state of research on early childhood teachers’ mathematics anxiety and shows the achievements and limitations of previous studies. The majority of the reviewed studies deals with pre-service early childhood teachers and their teacher education. Only a few studies tried to relate in-service early childhood teachers’ mathematics anxiety and children’s mathematical achievement. In the second part, this contribution examines empirically whether it can be assumed that the profession “early childhood teacher” can be characterized as “math-avoidant”. For this purpose, n = 774 German pre-service early childhood teachers were examined with regard to their mathematics anxiety and their choice of career. The results indicate effects of mathematics anxiety on the intentional choice to work as an early childhood teacher. The paper concludes with a general conclusion on the importance of mathematics anxiety for early childhood teachers’ professional competence and an outlook on future research.

    Description: A dominante modalidade de relações de produção, dos homens com a natureza, e entre eles próprios, se não estão esgotadas, encontram-se no limite intransponível do seu potencial. Forças de desenvolvimento social outrora, essas relações converteram-se em sua antítese, em problema social imenso que reclama sua superação histórica. Como os donos do poder se encontram inexoravelmente comprometidos com a ordem social, a empreitada cabe às classes trabalhadoras, que contam com uma teleologia secular de revolução social. Um fragmento dessa teleologia, protosocialista, foi com o que se deparou Laís Lima em seu estudo histórico-empírico realizado na Escola Milton Santos, em Maringá, PR. A pesquisadora constatou que nela se pratica uma pedagogia contraposta às antinomias supra referidas, e que suas principais ferramentas são o ensino da agroecologia e a gestão democrática. A agroecologia promove uma relação não agressiva da sociedade com a natureza, assim como o entendimento de que sua prática é incompatível com as relações de trabalho dominantes. Esse é um dos motivos pelo qual o seu incremento é indissociável do estabelecimento de novas relações de produção pedagógicas. Estas se expressam na gestão democrática da escola, cujo parentesco, no entanto, não é a democracia liberal, mas a democracia proletária aflorada na Comuna de Paris. O ótimo trabalho de Lima nos conduz com segurança pelos meandros dessa prática escolar, o que facilita a consulta dos leitores, dentre os quais, o movimento popular (MOP) é virtualmente o mais interessado. Isto porque, o fenômeno examinado é uma sugestiva exemplificação de como pode ser encaminhado, mutatis mutandis, o tão necessário reencontro do MOP com o clássico objetivo de reapropriação do trabalho pelos trabalhadores, o qual, no antropoceno, não pode prescindir da luta pela agroecologia.

Manifestes, entretiens, débats… ont peut-être plus fait pour imposer cette notion littéraire que les textes eux-mêmes, très novateurs certes, mais aussi très divers dans leurs enjeux et leurs pratiques. Bien que les « nouveaux romanciers » aient écrit des romans « nouveaux », ils ne sont en effet reconnus comme tels que par les commentaires que leurs œuvres suscitent, et par leurs propres prises de position. Aussi est-ce à ces textes décisifs et à leurs dispositifs énonciatifs que se consacre le présent ouvrage, plus particulièrement aux essais et interventions de Nathalie Sarraute et Alain Robbe-Grillet. Galia Yanoshevsky montre ainsi comment les discours s’emploient à fonder une esthétique et à lui donner corps au delà de la diversité des textes.

    Description: This publication is the result of a baseline study of the state of the higher education systems in the five Portuguese speaking countries in Africa (PALOP): Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe. The project was undertaken by an African international expert in the field of higher education studies and was fully sponsored and supported by the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA). The report offers a historical overview of the development of higher education in PALOP from colonial times to the present. The main objective of this baseline study is to map the landscape and dynamics of change in the higher education systems of PALOP countries. It focuses on describing the latest developments of trends of expansion, financing, governance and policy reforms closely linked to the development of higher education systems in these countries. Furthermore, the study will facilitate an informed debate and the dissemination of knowledge on the role of higher education for development in Africa.

    Description: In (First Person)2, Day and Eodice offer one of the few book-length studies of co-authoring in academic fields since Lunsford and Ede published theirs over a decade ago. The central research here involves in-depth interviews with ten successful academic collaborators from a range of disciplines and settings. The interviews explore the narratives of these informants' experience-what brought them to collaborate, what cognitive and logistical processes were involved as they worked together, what is the status of collaborated work in their field, and so on-and situate these informants within the broader discussion of collaboration theory and research as it has been articulated over the last ten years. As the study develops, Day and Eodice become most interested in the affective domain of co-authorship, and they find the most promising explorations of that domain in the work of feminist theorists in composition. Against a background of feminist theory, the reflections of these informants and authors not only provide a window into the processes of current scholarship in writing, but also come to stand as a critique of traditional practice in English departments. Throughout the book, the two co-authors interrupt themselves with reflections of their own, on the rejection long ago of their proposal to co-author a dissertation, on their presuppositions about their research, on their developing commitment to the framework of feminist theory to account for their findings, and on their own processes and challenges in writing this book. The result is a well-centered volume that is disciplined and restrained in its presentation of research, but which is layered and multivocal in presentation, and which ends with some provocative conclusions.

    Description: This book is the result of a longitudinal research project (2016–2018) funded by the National Research Foundation and the Fuchs Foundation, and it disseminates original research. The project researched the affordances of indigenous knowledge in the school science, technology and mathematics curricula. Short learning programmes (SLPs) were offered to STEM teachers, during which they engaged in creative and inquiry-based teaching and learning strategies. Research shows that strategies such as problem-based and cooperative learning have the potential to enhance self-directed learning. This design-based research was conducted in several provinces in South Africa (North-West Province, the Northern Cape, Limpopo Province, and in Gauteng). Based on the data obtained after each intervention, design principles were formulated for redesigning of SLPs. The qualitative research focussed on teachers’ lived experiences of the epistemological border-crossing between natural science and indigenous knowledge, their views on the nature of science and indigenous knowledge, and the reformed teaching and learning that took place after the intervention, in teachers’ classrooms.

    Description: "Desde o século XIX, com o célebre detetive Auguste Dupin, de Edgar Allan Poe, e a extensa cadeia de personagens e narrativas de mistério que em maior ou menor medida descenderam dali – passamos, nesse prolífico percurso, por Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandler, só para citar alguns autores –, o gênero policial foi se consolidando e, enquanto expandia progressivamente seu público, matizava-se e assumia novas formas. Este estudo, fruto de longa pesquisa a partir dos livros mais vendidos no Brasil no início do século XXI, debruça-se sobre o romance policial “místico-religioso”, subgênero definido por Fernanda Massi que se distancia um pouco das características tradicionais do romance policial: nessas tramas, o crime se conecta a um segredo ligado a um núcleo místico-religioso, em geral protegido por uma sociedade fechada e secreta às voltas com o que ela supõe ser um inimigo ameaçador. O repórter/investigador (que em tais obras nunca é chamado de detetive) busca uma verdade que supera a identificação do criminoso, tendo como alvo principal o segredo motivador dos crimes. Outra característica singular é a tentativa, quase frequente, de desmoralização da Igreja Católica. Isto ocorre através da oposição /ocultação/ vs. /revelação/ de um segredo, fazendo que esse subgênero tenha grande sucesso de público, uma vez que promete revelações surpreendentes sobre essa poderosa instituição."

    Description: Si Comenius (1592-1670) est peu connu en France, dans d’autres pays des centaines d’ouvrages ont été consacrés à l’étude de ses pensées. On sait qu’il a, entre autres choses, fondé la pédagogie comme science autonome. Il justifie la nécessité de l’éducation pour TOUS les hommes par la conception même qu’il se fait de la nature humaine qui ne peut parvenir à sa perfection que par une formation appropriée. L’éducation reçoit ainsi une orientation différente de celle que lui avait assignée l’humanisme du XVIe siècle, aussi bien dans sa finalité que dans les méthodes préconisées. Comenius présente ainsi tout un programme d’éducation préscolaire - innovation qui est généralement ignorée. Beaucoup plus tard, Rousseau emprunta à son prédécesseur ses idées les plus solides sur l’éducation de l’enfance. A une époque de profonds changements dans les structures sociales et dans la mentalité, l’étude de la pensée de Comenius est particulièrement stimulante et peut utilement inspirer ceux qui voudraient entreprendre une réforme du système éducatif et l’adapter à notre monde en devenir.

    Description: This chapter advances a novel theoretic-methodological approach to the analysis of qualitative data. The aim is to achieve a deeper understanding of the relationship between social inequality and educational outcomes in post-colonial rural Southern contexts. It operationalises the Habitus Listening Guide (Arnot & Naveed, 2014) derived from Bourdieu’s theory of cultural reproduction and contemporary narrative theory. The chapter describes the application of four listenings using a dialogic, multi-layered, analysis of interview transcripts. It uncovers the polyphonic voices of four members of Munawar Hussain’s family, describing the impact of the rural social structure on their educational and occupational biographies. Inter-narrativity is generated through repeated listenings of the social structure, of paired father-mother and son-daughter and then of father-son and mother-daughter narratives, and a final mythic-ritual listening which makes audible when religious beliefs are called into play. These beliefs either contribute to the maintenance of poverty and social inequality, and yet inspire strategies to disrupt power structures through education as a religious duty.     Description: In this chapter we consider why education systems have not yet achieved equitable access and learning for all girls, despite high-level government commitment. Taking Ethiopia as a case study, we refer to the ‘domains of power’ framework (Hickey & Hossain, 2019) to explore the influence of politics on progress in girls’ education, focusing on the interaction between the political settlement and the education policy domain. The analysis draws on data from the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) Ethiopia programme, including analysis of government documents, actor mapping and interviews with 150 key government stakeholders across seven regions and city administrations in Ethiopia. Adopting a gender lens, we take account of the influence and interaction of informal institutions within the education domain. We find that the education system cannot be considered to be a gender-neutral site given that women continue to be absent from positions of power. In addition, stakeholders’ ideas about the nature of gender roles influence their attitudes, behaviour and actions, holding back progress towards the high-level commitments.

    Description: This open access book explores the transformative experiences of participants in the University of Sydney’s National Centre for Cultural Competence (NCCC) programs. The establishment of the NCCC was viewed as a critical point of departure for developing an institution-wide agenda of cultural competence. The NCCC’s work since its inception reflects efforts to lay important foundations for cultural change at the University. With the ultimate aim of establishing cultural competence as an agent for transformational change and social justice education, the NCCC has steadily expanded its research and teaching work both within and beyond the University of Sydney. Further, it has developed foundational resources to support and encourage University staff to integrate cultural competence philosophy and pedagogy in their curricula, teaching and research.     Description: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

    Description: Ce livre étudie les représentations du Havre par plusieurs écrivains du XXe siècle et dessine les contours d'un « territoire littéraire » havrais. Après avoir proposé des outils de lecture, empruntés notamment à la géocritique, qui permettent d'enrichir notre connaissance à la fois des œuvres et du Havre, considérés dans une dynamique nouvelle, il entre dans le détail des représentations de la ville à travers les œuvres de six auteurs, dans la genèse desquelles la ville a un rôle essentiel : Louis-Ferdinand Céline, pour lequel Le Havre est associé à la figure du grand-père paternel, Georges Limbour et Armand Salacrou, auteurs havrais, Jean Dubuffet, Michel Leiris, Jean-Paul Sartre enfin, qui a enraciné l'existentialisme au Havre. Des documents complètent le volume, dont la réédition d'un texte de Raymond Queneau paru dans une revue en 1954, Portrait littéraire du Havre.

    Description: This Open Access book is about the development of a common understanding of environmental citizenship. It conceptualizes and frames environmental citizenship taking an educational perspective. Organized in four complementary parts, the book first explains the political, economic and societal dimensions of the concept. Next, it examines environmental citizenship as a psychological concept with a specific focus on knowledge, values, beliefs and attitudes. It then explores environmental citizenship within the context of environmental education and education for sustainability. It elaborates responsible environmental behaviour, youth activism and education for sustainability through the lens of environmental citizenship. Finally, it discusses the concept within the context of different educational levels, such as primary and secondary education in formal and non-formal settings. Environmental citizenship is a key factor in sustainability, green and cycle economy, and low-carbon society, and an important aspect in addressing global environmental problems. It has been an influential concept in many different arenas such as economy, policy, philosophy, and organizational marketing. In the field of education, the concept could be better exploited and established, however. Education and, especially, environmental discourses in science education have a great deal to contribute to the adoption and promotion of environmental citizenship.

    Description: This chapter deals with the sensorimotor predominance in connection with hindrances to the learning of reading and writing in a group of 120 left-handed pupils, aged 9 to 20, educated in ten schools located in the western and southern departments of Haiti. Manual, visual and auditory preference is studied in relation to linguistic performance in left-handed students, sometimes ignored but often forced to favor the side which hemispherical development has not made naturally dominant. Poor performance was certainly observed, but it is not directly linked to these students’ left-handedness. It is preponderantly the consequence of asymmetries contrary to the cerebral hemisphere, of a somewhat underhand attempt at 'dyslateralization', due to the failure of an educational system characterized by shortcomings and prejudices built around the phenomenon of laterality and problems emanating from unsuitable educational and linguistic practices. This creates constraints that prevent these students from thriving. Because the teaching strategies, methods and the school environment are designed and adapted to benefit right-handed students, left-handed people have a disability.

    Description: Si l'Histoire a souvent mis face à face la Russie et l'Allemagne, cela n'a pas empêché l'établissement d'échanges culturels étroits et féconds entre les deux cultures. C'est la littérature, et plus précisément les textes qui rapprochent et réunissent les auteurs étudiés dans ce volume et c'est au nom de ce patrimoine commun que l'on peut parler « d'affinités électives » entre les deux littératures. Jeu avec le texte (ses constituants, ses personnages, ses métaphores) ou jeu autour du texte (son statut ou le nom de son auteur), citation, référence, allusion, plagiat ou hommage, le présent volume offre une vaste palette de possibilités intertextuelles. Trois cas de figures se dégagent cependant avec plus de netteté : le premier consiste à reprendre dans leur ensemble un mythe ou un substrat de pensée qui, insérés dans leur contexte d'accueil, prennent une tout autre résonance ; le deuxième consiste à emprunter certains éléments ponctuels. Enfin, il existe aussi des affinités plus diffuses, des parallèles souvent très frappants, pour lesquelles il est toutefois difficile de décider si elles sont le fruit d'une influence directe.

    Description: L’influence grandissante du monde économique sur l’école occidentale a favorisé la création d’une multitude d’indicateurs et d’évaluations censés rendre compte de l’efficacité des systèmes éducatifs. Les résultats des épreuves internationales comme PISA ainsi que les classements internationaux qu’ils entraînent influencent les politiques éducatives et les pratiques enseignantes. En français, discipline scolaire particulièrement sensible politiquement, les pratiques d’évaluation sommative prennent ainsi souvent le pas sur les évaluations formatives, davantage centrées sur les apprentissages des élèves et sur les indices de leur progression. Les contributeurs de cet ouvrage mettent en tension ces différents volets de l’évaluation en français, étudiant à travers les tâches langagières spécifiques à cette discipline la façon dont les enseignants et les institutions interprètent leur mandat d’évaluation. Deux ensembles de travaux structurent cet ouvrage : ceux portant sur les pratiques d’évaluation en classe et ceux qui abordent les tests d’évaluation certificative, dans une perspective nationale ou internationale.
