Description: Nachhaltigkeit ist allgegenwärtig.

Description: How is the handling of contested “objects” from the German colonial era shaped in ethnological Museums in Germany and Cameroon? This ethnographic study connects, for the first time, approaches from ethnology, (international) law, (art) history and museology which constitute the multidisciplinary field of “return” to deal with this question. Two current return claims of things from Cameroon at ethnological museums in Munich and Berlin take centre stage: Tange/Schiffschnabel and Ngonnso’/Schalenträgerfigur. The reconstruction of the cultural biographies of the contested items documents their part as points of intersection in complex networks of relations and stakeholders from the 19th century to this day. These networks connect people and institutions in Cameroon and Germany and their diverse conceptions and claims on these things in a versatile manner. Return claims, according to the thesis, appear as a magnifying lens which discloses diverging conceptions of things and ontologies.

Description: In 1998, the Master’s programme Euroculture started with the aim to offer, amid the many existing programmes that focused on European institutional developments, a European studies curriculum that puts the interplay of culture, society and politics in Europe at the heart of the curriculum. Among other topics, the programme focused on how Europe and European integration could be contextualised and what these concepts meant to European citizens. In June 2018, Euroculture celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a conference to discuss not only the changes within the MA Euroculture itself, but also to reflect upon the changes in the field of European studies over the last two decades writ large. This volume brings together the main findings of this conference. Since its start, Euroculture has engaged with European studies by providing a space for cooperation between more mainstream-oriented research on the one hand and a variety of sociological, historiographical, post-structuralist, and post-colonial perspectives on Europe on the other. This has enabled Euroculture to contextualise the emergence and development of European institutions historically and in relation to broader socio-political and cultural processes. Its methodology, that treats theoretical and analytical work, classroom teaching and engaged practice as integral parts of critical inquiry, has significantly contributed to its ability to continuously enhance scholarly discussions. The volume is divided into two parts, which are intrinsically linked. The first part contains reflections on the field of European studies and on concepts, analytical perspectives and methodologies that have emerged through interdisciplinary dialogues in Euroculture/European studies. The second part contains contributions that reflect upon the Euroculture programme itself, discussing both changes and continuities in the curriculum and didactic methods, outlining possible venues for further developing the educational and research programme that is firmly embedded in a network of partners that have been closely cooperating over a span of no less than two decades.

Description: This research unravels the economic collapse of the Datoga pastoralists of central and northern Tanzania from the 1830s to the beginning of the 21st century. The research builds from the broader literature on continental African pastoralism during the past two centuries. Overall, the literature suggests that African pastoralism is collapsing due to changing political and environmental factors. My dissertation aims to provide a case study adding to the general trends of African pastoralism, while emphasizing the topic of competition as not only physical, but as something that is ethnically negotiated through historical and collective memories. There are two main questions that have guided this project: 1) How is ethnic space defined by the Datoga and their neighbours across different historical times? And 2) what are the origins of the conflicts and violence and how have they been narrated by the state throughout history? Examining archival sources and oral interviews it is clear that the Datoga have struggled through a competitive history of claims on territory against other neighbouring communities. The competitive encounters began with the Maasai entering the Serengeti in the 19th century, and intensified with the introduction of colonialism in Mbulu and Singida in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The fight for control of land and resources resulted in violent clashes with other groups. Often the Datoga were painted as murderers and impediments to development. Policies like the amalgamation measures of the British colonial administration in Mbulu or Ujamaa in post-colonial Tanzania aimed at confronting the “Datoga problem,” but were inadequate in neither addressing the Datoga issues of identity, nor providing a solution to their quest for land ownership and control.

Description: Collecting societies are central players in copyright law in Germany with an annual turnover of currently almost two billion euros. Hundreds of thousands of cultural workers are directly dependent on the exploitation of their rights by collecting societies. Critics are of the opinion that these rights owners have only insufficient influence on the supposedly intransparent distribution of funds by the collecting societies. The criticism culminated in accusations of "mafia-like structures". This paper examines the internal structure and corporate governance of collecting societies. While their activities and state supervision are partially harmonized throughout Europe and regulated in the German VGG, the internal structure of the societies as a hybrid between private and public law has hardly been investigated. With the help of interviews with stakeholders, it is possible to evaluate the status quo and to make suggestions for improvement that are suitable for raising the standard of co-determination.

Description: The collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of Christian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, religious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. These essays are representing the research results of the project “Practicing Love of God: Comparing Women’s and Men’s Practice in Medieval Saxony” guided by the art historian Galit Noga-Banai, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the historian Hedwig Röckelein, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. This project was running from 2013 to 2018 within the Niedersachsen-Israeli Program and financed by the State of Lower Saxony.

Description: Presenting the previously unpublished lecture notes of ‘Über das Leben Raffaels von Urbino’ by Carl Wilhelm Friedrich Oesterley, a lecture series given in spring 1841 at the University of Göttingen, this edition sheds light on a major step contribution to the research on Raphael and academic teaching in the 19th century. The manuscript draws on the seminal study of Johann David Passavant on Raphael and his father Giovanni Santi, published two years earlier in 1839. The volume presents a collection of studies on Oestlerley’s role within the reception of Raphael in the Romanticism and on his career as painter, arthistorian and as curator of the university art collection in Göttingen. Based on numerous original sources, the edition offers an insight into the academic teaching in the mid-19th century.
Jahrhunderts.

Description: The use of resources is the precondition of all life. This is foremost true for natural resources such as water, food and fuels but also for immaterial resources like information and efficient social networks. In this book authors from different disciplines try to understand the dealing with resources in a historical perspective. Thereby they analyse topics such as the supply of food in classical Greece, the forest management in the Austrian Alps provinces of the nineteenth century, libraries as stores of knowledge and the present landscape as resource for a better understanding of the past. Together, the papers which are the result of a 2019 workshop of the Göttingen based research project “Nachhaltigkeit als Argument / Sustainability as an Argument” show the diversity and potentials of historical research in the field of resources.

Description: The present work examines the execution of long youth penalties amongst juvenile and adolescent offenders convicted of violent and sexual crimes. To investigate the intention of the penal system, which lies in the social re-integration of prisoners to avoid further criminal behavior, different aspects like education, care, treatment, day-release and release preparation regarding young inmates were examined in detail. For this purpose, records obtained from Bundeszentralregister (Federal Central Criminal Register) as well as prison files of relevant offenders that were released from prison between 2002 and 2007 after completing a youth penalty of more than five years were evaluated. In addition, ministerial administrative provisions as well as a survey in penal institutions were used to analyze the current situation in prison.

Description: How does a cultural landscape come into being? And how is this process connected to the valorization of objects, sites and spaces as cultural heritage? Based on the example of the Czech-German Ore Mountains the ethnographic study investigates the relationship between practices of inheriting culture and the producton of space. With reference to anthropological heritage and policy studies, the research focuses on national and international heritage governances, particularly those of the UNESCO world heritage prorgram. How are they related to local memory discourses and practices? How do they assist in the promotion of regional tourism and other economic endeavors? What role do EU-policies on European integration play? The Czech-German Ore Mountains region is marked by post-war forced migration and resettlement. Against the background of this complex history, the study shows how collective claims on cultural property are formulated and how a shared, transboundary heritage is negotiated.

Description: This volume brings together the papers of the 15th Göttingen Workshop on Family Law, which was held on the 20th October 2017 in cooperation with the joint project "Power and Powerlessness of Maternity". All in all eight contributions shed light on the currently controversial discussion about the so-called shared residence model from different perspectives: In addition to the constitutional basics, comparative and interdisciplinary approaches, all follow-up questions in maintenance, social and tax law are also dealt with. It becomes very clear that the deficits in the relevant laws can only be partially compensated by judiciary law and that the existing incoherencies can only be remedied rudimentary. In addition, well-founded proposals for reform are also presented.
