    Description: 〈P〉In the history of Czech linguistic theory and thought there is hardly a book more controversial than the grammar of Václav J. Rosa (1620-1689), Čechořečnost seu Grammatica Linguae Bohemicae. It appeared in 1672, two years after Comenius's death, at the beginning of the dark age (temno) which came to symbolize for the revivalist tradition, haunted as it was by the past, the decadence of Czech literature, culture and national spirit. Given this, Rosa's grammar (henceforth RG) was inevitably destined to acquire the stigma of the same degenerate qualities which corrupted the nation's very soul, ist language.     Learning Ontology Relations by Combining Corpus-Based Techniques and Reasoning on Data from Semantic Web Sources (2021)

    Description: The manual construction of formal domain conceptualizations (ontologies) is labor-intensive. Ontology learning, by contrast, provides (semi-)automatic ontology generation from input data such as domain text. This thesis proposes a novel approach for learning labels of non-taxonomic ontology relations. It combines corpus-based techniques with reasoning on Semantic Web data. Corpus-based methods apply vector space similarity of verbs co-occurring with labeled and unlabeled relations to calculate relation label suggestions from a set of candidates. A meta ontology in combination with Semantic Web sources such as DBpedia and OpenCyc allows reasoning to improve the suggested labels. An extensive formal evaluation demonstrates the superior accuracy of the presented hybrid approach.

The study reacts to low attainment levels in English as a foreign language among socioeconomically disadvantaged youth.     Description: Ludwig Wittgensteins «Bemerkungen über die Farben» gelten als äußerst schwieriger Text. Das vorliegende Buch führt Schritt für Schritt an die Themen und Problemstellungen der Farbbemerkungen Wittgensteins heran und liefert umfangreiche Erläuterungen zu den wichtigsten Textpassagen. Dies ist bemerkenswert, weil das bruchstückhafte Textmaterial aus den beiden letzten Lebensjahren Wittgensteins eine klare Struktur vermissen lässt, die darin aufgeworfenen Fragen häufig befremdlich anmuten und größtenteils ohne Antwort bleiben. So ist es wenig verwunderlich, dass bis jetzt keine umfassende philosophische Studie zu den «Bemerkungen über die Farben» zur Verfügung steht. Das Buch von Frederik A. Gierlinger füllt erstmalig diese Lücke in der Rezeptionsgeschichte.

    Description: Edmond Jabès was one of the most intriguing Jewish thinkers of the 20th century – a poet for the public and a Kabbalist for those who read his work more closely. This book turns his writings into a ground-breaking philosophical achievement: thinking which is manifestly indebted to the Kabbalah, but in the post-religious and post-Shoah world. Loss, exile, negativity, God’s absence, writing and Jewishness are the main signposts of the negative ontology which this book offers as an interpretation of Jabès’ work. On the basis of it, the book examines the nature of the miraculous encounter between Judaism and philosophy which occurred in the 20th century. Karl Christian Friedrich Krause has bequeathed to us a system of philosophy which is little recognised in contemporary philosophy. This is both surprising and unfortunate, because Krause’s philosophical system has much to offer: Through transcendental reflection on the nature of the human, Krause understands God as the one infinite and unconditioned reality, and the ultimate necessary condition of knowledge. God makes humanity, nature, and reason ultimately comprehensible as the essential categories of the divine Essence. God is thus the single, primary, object of science that is already logically presupposed even before His discovery. Science presupposes theology, and theology is best read as panentheism.

However, it is rarely noted that their contemporary understanding has been shaped by the works of Jacques Derrida, who has employed all these concepts since the mid-1960s. The aim of this book is to present the lesser discussed topics of Derrida’s thought – not only as the creator of a specific mode of interpretation called "deconstruction" but also as an initiator of recent ethical and political reflection, a pioneer of performatics, and a precursor of current research on experience.     Description: Do technologies advance our self-identities, as they do our bodies, cognitive skills, and the next developmental stage called postpersonal? Did we already manage to be fully human, before becoming posthuman? Are we doomed to disintegration and episodic selfhood? This book examines the impact of radical technopoiesis on our selves from a multidisciplinary perspective, including the health humanities, phenomenology, the life sciences and humanoid AI (artificial intelligence) ethics. Surprisingly, our body representations show more plasticity than scholarly concepts and sociocultural narratives. Our embodied selves can withstand transplants, bionic prostheses and radical somatechnics, but to remain autonomous and authentic, our agential potentials must be strengthened – and this is not through ‘psychosurgery’ and the brain–computer interface.

    Description: The book deals with manifestations and relics of magical thinking in the narrative folklore of Cieszyn Silesia (Teschen Silesia, Těšín Silesia). The point of departure is a phenomenological and social constructivist approach to human cognition. The author follows the cognitive dimensions of pre-modern folklore and popular texts in general. They are conventional in the sense that they are repeated in many variants inside one communicative group. Habituation based on more or less accurate reproduction of stereotypes (and corresponding experiences), motives, action scenarios, rationalizations, and motivations, is the source of relatively stable world image. The key concept developed in the book is redefined categorization understood as the simplification and stabilization of too complex and changing reality through shared narratives.

    Description: Considerable socio-political change has re-configured the discursive space once occupied by ‘utopia’. Within the cultures of late capitalism and the organisational matrices of bio-political administration, that space is no longer animated by images of idealised states that are yet to come, or by a sense of simple failure in the production of those same states. Rather, it is overdetermined by a condition of differentiation in the representation of reality. The origins of that differentiation of representation appear to lie deep within the modernist project. In the Place of Utopia explores how that condition of representation might be animated anew by the discursive circuits through which modernity has come to operate, so as to enliven the ability of transformative ideas to lever change from within a range of organic crises current to the world system: the financialisation of global capitalism; the subsumption of worker subjectivities to the logic of capital; the broadening of the metabolic rift through industrial-capitalism. Central to this animation of transformative ideas is the relationship between language andthe body.

    Description: The concept of subordination plays a prominent role in the paranesis of 1 Peter, and it appears too in the context of Christ’s victory over the cosmic powers. It seems to presuppose some kind of given natural and social order in which people must live in their allotted place. But the author also sees his readers’ subordination as conditioned by their status as free people, which he expounds in several passages. This investigation aims to clarify the meaning and relationship of the concepts of subordination and freedom in 1 Peter, with reference to the related idea of order. After an introduction that sets out the issues in detail, the first main section examines the three themes in the wider thought of the first century CE, and the second provides detailed exegesis of the key Petrine texts. A final chapter synthesizes this evidence and draws conclusions regarding the conceptuality of subordination and freedom expressed in the letter. The study presents the idea of "restored order" as a new interpretive key to the teaching and paranesis of 1 Peter and the significant New Testament tradition to which it belongs. It clarifies the important Petrine concepts of subordination and freedom, with that of order, within the letter as a whole and its constituent parts, and it illuminates the exegesis of various disputed texts and passages. Scholars and research students of 1 Peter and the wider New Testament will find here a compelling proposal to stimulate and inform their own engagement with the text.

Ohne etwa eine Synthese beider Disziplinen zu fordern, wird in dieser Arbeit aufgezeigt, inwieweit eine stärkere Einbeziehung ethischer Überlegungen die ökonomische Analyse bereichern kann. Anhand einer Untersuchung des von 〈I〉Bergson〈/I〉 in den 30er Jahren eingeführten und von 〈I〉Samuelson〈/I〉 und 〈I〉Arrow〈/I〉 aufgegriffenen Konzepts einer gesellschaftlichen Wohlfahrtsfunktion werden nicht nur die Grundlagen bisheriger wohlfahrtsökonomischer Standardkonzeptionen dargelegt, sondern diese auch mit der jüngsten Diskussion verknüpft.

    Description: In dieser Arbeit wird der Nachweis erbracht, dass es im Rahmen der neoklassischen Theorie nicht möglich ist, grundlegende Probleme der Transformation realsozialistischer Wirtschafssysteme im Hinblick auf Unternehmen zu erkennen. Um diesen Defiziten begegnen zu können, wird der Versuch eines theoretischen Gegenentwurfs unternommen, der vor allem auf dem methodischen Ansatz der Österreichischen Schule fußt. Das Erklärungspotential dieses praxeologisch-eigentumsrechtlichen Theorieansatzes wird am Beispiel der Transformation des Wirtschaftssystems in Russland demonstriert. Es zeigt sich, dass nicht die sogenannte Privatisierung bestehender Unternehmensstrukturen, sondern die ungehinderte Schaffung neuer Unternehmen eine Lösung der Transformationskrise verspricht.

    Description: The emerging development of genetic enhancement technologies has recently become the focus of a public and philosophical debate between proponents and opponents of a liberal eugenics – that is, the use of these technologies without any overall direction or governmental control. Inspired by Foucault’s, Agamben’s and Esposito’s writings about biopower and biopolitics, the author sees both positions as equally problematic, as both presuppose the existence of a stable, autonomous subject capable of making decisions concerning the future of human nature, while in the age of genetic technology the nature of this subjectivity shall be less an origin than an effect of such decisions. Bringing together a biopolitical critique of the way this controversial issue has been dealt with in liberal moral and political philosophy with a philosophical analysis of the nature of and the relation between life, politics, and technology, the author sets out to outline the contours of a more responsible engagement with genetic technologies based on the idea that technology is an intrinsic condition of humanity.

Die Medizin führt Menschen in Grenzsituationen, in denen «ihr Wille» in vielerlei Hinsichten problematisch wird: Kinder sollen in die Durchführung medizinischer Maßnahmen einwilligen; Menschen mit Demenz können sich zu Therapien manchmal nicht mehr klar äußern; potentielle Teilnehmende einer klinischen Studie sind durch deren Komplexität überfordert, sollen aber zustimmen. Der Band fokussiert bewusst Randzonen, in denen nicht klar ist, was ein Wille ist und ob eine Willensäußerung vorliegt. An diesen Randbereichen wird besser als in thematischen Kernzonen sichtbar, was Idee und Praxis des Willens leisten und was sie verdecken. Daraus ergeben sich neue Fragen zur Problematik des Entscheidens und der Einwilligung in Grenzsituationen.

    Description: The subject of this book is the philosophy of Stanisław Lem. The first part contains an analysis and interpretation of one of his early works, The Dialogues. The author tries to show how Lem used the terminology of cybernetics to create a project of sociology and anthropology. The second part examines Lem’s essay Summa technologiae, which is considered as the project of human autoevolution. The term «autoevolution» is a neologism for the concept of humans taking control over their own biological evolution and form in order to improve the conditions of their being. In this interpretation, Summa is an example of a liberal utopia, based on the assumption that all human problems can be resolved by science. Various social theories, which can be linked to the project of autoevolution, are presented in the final part.

    Description: This book analyzes the history of the black market in Poland before the 1940s and the development of black-market phenomena in post-war Poland. The author evaluates the interrelation between black-market phenomena and historical and geographical conditions. At first, the black market stabilized the system by making it more flexible and creating a margin of freedom, albeit in the short term. In the long run, the informal economic activities of the people ran counter to and undermined the official ideology of the state. The author concludes that in post-war Poland, owing to a singular coincidence of historical, political, economic and social factors, the second economy had its own unique character and an endemic presence that loomed large in the Soviet Bloc.

    Description: A culture shaped by Christianity is about deciphering its underlying religious figures. The present work aims to contribute to this. The point is to examine a figure that established the "functioning" of Old Russian culture, commonly referred to as "the neo-Platonic archetype-image-thinking". Implicitly it is assumed here that in the 10th and 11th an influence of the Slavic culture by the Byzantine Christianity of orthodox imprint took place, the exact way of which is not to be determined. The study of the image-of-the-image thinking in the Byzantine culture and its attachment to the icon worship is therefore dedicated to a first part of this work, the study of the ancient Russian archetype image thinking of the next and largest part.
    Description: In einer vom Christentum geprägten Kultur geht es darum, die ihr zugrundeliegenden religiösen Figuren zu entschlüsseln. Dazu will die vorliegende Arbeit einen Beitrag leisten. Es geht darum, eine Figur zu untersuchen, die das "Funktionieren" der altrussischen Kultur begründete, und die gemeinhin "das neoplatonische Urbild-Abbild-Denken" genannt wird.     Description: This Critical Dictionary on Borders, Cross-Border Cooperation and European Integration is the first encyclopaedia which combines two so far not well interconnected interdisciplinary research fields, i.e. Border Studies and European Studies. Organised in an alphabetical order, it contains 207 articles written by 115 authors from different countries and scientific disciplines which are accompanied by 58 maps. The articles deal with theory, terminology, concepts, actors, themes and spaces of neighbourhood relations at European borders and in borderlands of and around the European Union (EU). Taking into account a multi-scale perspective from the local to the global, the Critical Dictionary follows a combined historical-geographical approach and is co-directed by Birte Wassenberg and Bernard Reitel, with a large contribution of Jean Peyrony and Jean Rubio from the Mission opérationnelle transfrontalère (MOT), especially for the cartography. The Dictionary is also part of four Jean Monnet activities supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union for the period 2016-2022: two Jean Monnet projects on EU border regions (University Strasbourg), one Jean Monnet network (Frontem) and the Franco-German Jean Monnet excellence Center in Strasbourg, as well as the Jean Monnet Chair of Bernard Reitel on borders and European integration. Rather than being designed as an objective compilation of facts and figures, it should serve as a critical tool for discussion between researchers, students and practitioners working in the field of borders, cross-border cooperation and European Integration.

The translation celebrations became a splendid religious festivity showing sacral foundations of Saint Louis’s authority and the Capetian kingship. However, the translation of the Crown of Thorns to France had already a history under Louis’s reign: French hagiographers and chroniclers affirmed that the first relics of the Crown of Thorns from Constantinople were transferred to Aachen by Charlemagne, then to Saint-Denis Abbey by Charles the Bald. The book discusses Saint Louis’s translation of the Crown of Thorns as seen on the background of both Carolingian historical memory in Capetian era and Carolingian and Capetian tradition of the royal cult of relics.

    Description: The book presents the discoveries made by the Polish archaeological mission in Saqqara, the central part of the largest ancient Egyptian royal necropolis. The area adjacent to the Pyramid of King Djoser on the monument’s west side, so far neglected by archaeologists, turned out to be an important burial place of the Egyptian nobility from two periods of Pharaonic history: the Old Kingdom (the late third millennium BC) and the Ptolemaic Period (the late first millennium BC). The earlier, lower cemetery yielded rock-hewn tombs with splendid wall decoration in relief and painting. The book also describes methods of conservation applied to the discovered artefacts and episodes from the mission’s life.

    Description: The 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's year of birth in 1983 gave rise to a critical examination of his time and the developments he had begun that had changed the world so sustainably. The Reformation has also made a significant impact in the southeast of Europe. In order to make the Word of God directly accessible to as many people as possible, translations were made and distributed in print to churches and communities. Many smaller languages, including Slovene, were written in this way. This act is due to the Slovenes Primus Trüber (1508-1586). He played a central role in the Reformation in his home in Krainer, and thus came into ever closer contact with Protestant Germany, especially with the Duchy of Württemberg, which gradually became the outpost of German Lutheranism.

Wiederkehr von Martin Luthers Geburtsjahr bot 1983 Anlaß, sich mit seiner Zeit und den von ihm in Gang gebrachten Entwicklungen, die die Welt so nachhaltig verändert haben, kritisch auseinanderzusetzen. Auch in den Südosten Europas hat die Reformation folgenreich ausgestrahlt. Um das Wort Gottes möglichst vielen Menschen direkt zugänglich zu machen, wurden Übersetzungen angefertigt und in gedruckter Form an Kirchen und Gemeinden verteilt. Viele kleinere Sprachen, darunter auch das Slowenische, gelangten auf diese Weise zur Schriftlichkeit. Diese Tat verdanken die Slowenen Primus Trüber (1508-1586). Er spielte eine zentrale Rolle für die Reformation in seiner Krainer Heimat und kam dadurch in immer engeren Kontakt mit dem protestantischen Deutschland, vornehmlich mit dem Herzogtum Württemberg, das allmählich zum Vorposten des deutschen Luthertums wurde.
