    Description: Sexual violence attains a high level of public attention, almost daily the media report about it. Also for the crime and justice policy, it was always a reason to discuss the sharpening and expansion of sentences. More astonishing is that hardly anyone has examined why relatively many persons is suspected of sexual violence, but only a small percentage is ever sentenced. This volume is intended to provide new insights by describing on the one hand the identified issues, and on the other hand analysing identification processes, selection processes and sentencing. This will be based on a census of investigations in two court districts in Lower Saxony.

    Description: Temporary releases from prison and open prisons are elementary components of a rehabilitation-oriented prison system. This statement has remained unchanged after the federalism reform, with which the legislative competence for the prison system was transferred from the federal government to the states. The reform provides an opportunity to compare the 16 new state laws with each other and to examine the legal regulations on temporary releases from prisons and open prisons from admission to the penal institution through to discharge, taking into account normative administrative practice. In doing so, this is explored whether the federal states have maintained the standard established by the Federal German Prison Act of 1976, legitimized restorative tendencies or established innovations. The present work also makes a contribution to a constitutionally determined understanding of temporary releases from prison and open prisons.

    Description: Clinical trials of medicinal products on human subjects are a balancing act between the protection of the study participant and the preservation of his dignity on the one hand and the constant striving for medical progress on the other hand. This applies likewise to the control group as an essential part of every clinical testing of pharmaceuticals without which no drug will receive marketing authorisation in Germany by the competent authorities. Nevertheless, significant gaps in the German legislation concerning this matter still remain as the German legislator has yet to implement any specific rules with regard to the handling and management of the control group in clinical trials. In view of this unsettled legal situation, the author critically analyses the core of the problem areas in this field’s current research practice and creates solutions reflecting the interests of the study participant as well as the practical needs of medical research. Only legal clarity regarding the control group can provide for the safety that is crucial in this field of tension between ethics, medicine and the law.

    Description: For some time massive change needs primarily by libraries and other public facilities for the system of science communication have been formulated against the background the so-called "serials crisis. Great potential for modifications are attributed to information and communication technologies, which seem suitable to allow the distribution of scientific results in cheaper and faster than with the since the end of the 17th Century's established channels of communication of paper-based journals. The current discussion of the changes focus in particular on the phrase "Open Access" with the two basic design options "Green Road" the parallel free online publication media, and the "Golden Road," the primary publishing in open access media. In practice, however, there are numerous, highly differentiated business models for new forms of originary publication services, as well as complementary services. Some of these new forms of science communication are already described in the literature, usually as case-by-case documentations. A helpful addition would be a study grid, which would allow a structured description of different forms of scientific communication. To establish such a typology is the goal of this book. This typology is then used to select new services to be described and then compared. Another aim of the book is so is to make a contribution to the systematic description of reality and thus to provide a basis for sound research.

Deren komplexe Kupfersticherfindungen sind nicht – wie bislang angenommen – Emblemvarianten, sondern stellen ein gänzlich anders funktionierendes System der Text- und Bild-Synthese dar. Der jeweiligen Andachts-, Erbauungs- oder Lehrfunktion entsprechend verbildlichen die Kupferstiche Allegorisierungen moralischer und religiöser Didaxe, bildinterne Lettern und beigefügte Erläuterungen erschließen Inhalte und stellen den Bezug zu den verbildlichten Texten her. Analyse der unterschiedlichen Text-Bild-Verschränkungen in den vier Büchern, Herleitung der Buchstabenverweissysteme, buchgeschichtliche Einordnung, Entstehungsumstände, Konzeptionsgeschichte, funktionale Bestimmungen und Rezeptionen der Bücher und Bilder werden umfassend geklärt. Dabei ist einerseits zu fragen, wie der Wandel im menschlichen Verhältnis zur »Natur« (und den sich wandelnden Bedeutungsnuancen dieses Begriffs) zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten in literarischen Texten verhandelt wird und welche neuen literarischen Ausdrucksformen er womöglich provoziert. Andererseits ist auch zu fragen, wie sich literarische und kulturelle Muster auf die Gestaltung der naturalen Umwelt auswirken können. Inwiefern korrespondieren dabei literarische Modellierungen des Wandels diachron und synchron mit Veränderungsprozessen in der Natur? Diese doppelte Fragestellung schließt auch die Möglichkeit einer wechselseitigen Kritik umwelthistorischer und literarischer Perspektiven ein.

Der Einzelne kann sein Selbstbestimmungsrecht nur wahrnehmen, wenn seine Entscheidung Voraussetzung gerechtfertigten ärztlichen Handelns ist. Kann ein Volljähriger auf Grund einer Krankheit oder Behinderung darüber nicht befinden, können Entscheidungen durch einen rechtsgeschäftlichen Vertreter – einen Bevollmächtigten – oder durch einen gesetzlichen Vertreter – einen Betreuer – getroffen werden. In der vorliegenden Untersuchung werden die unterschiedlichen Vertretungsregelungen im Bereich der Gesundheitsangelegenheiten dargestellt. Es wird zudem geprüft, ob es das Selbstbestimmungsrecht des Einzelnen gebietet, eine weitere „automatische“ Vertretungsmöglichkeit für nahe Angehörige zu normieren. Es wird auch erwogen, auf welche Grundlage eine entsprechende Befugnis gestützt werden, in welchen Fällen und unter welchen Voraussetzungen sie eingreifen könnte.

Welche Personen werden in den Nachschlagewerken der Disziplin – in ihren Wissensspeichern – mit eigenem Lemma vorgestellt? Welche Konjunkturen und Kanonisierungsprozesse lassen sich beobachten? Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Personenlemmata in allen 29 deutschsprachigen, alphabetisch sortierten, allgemeinpädagogischen Fachlexika bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. In einem quantitativen Teil analysiert sie systematisch-vergleichend die Lexika und ihre Personenlemmata nach verschiedenen Kategorien. In einem qualitativen Teil werden für vier Personen – Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Rein und Helene Lange – sowie die Gruppe der ersten in Lexika genannten Frauen Wandel und Kontinuität in der lexikografischen Rezeption und Darstellung vertieft analysiert. Welche Personen werden in den Nachschlagewerken der Disziplin – in ihren Wissensspeichern – mit eigenem Lemma vorgestellt? Welche Konjunkturen und Kanonisierungsprozesse lassen sich beobachten? Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht die Personenlemmata in allen 29 deutschsprachigen, alphabetisch sortierten, allgemeinpädagogischen Fachlexika bis zur Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. In einem quantitativen Teil analysiert sie systematisch-vergleichend die Lexika und ihre Personenlemmata nach verschiedenen Kategorien. In einem qualitativen Teil werden für vier Personen – Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Rein und Helene Lange – sowie die Gruppe der ersten in Lexika genannten Frauen Wandel und Kontinuität in der lexikografischen Rezeption und Darstellung vertieft analysiert. Die Arbeit bietet eine Rekonstruktion des Wissens über Personen in den historischen Nachschlagewerken der Disziplin und Anschlussmöglichkeiten für aktuelle Forschung.

    Description: Johann Friedrich von Uffenbach was a wealthy scion of a Frankfurt patrician family, of hereditary nobility, and the younger brother of Zacharias Conrad (1683-1734), one of the greatest book collectors and manuscript specialists of his time. He first studied under the mathematical rationalist Enlightenment philosopher Christian Wolff (1679-1754) in Halle before earning a law degree from the University of Strasbourg in 1714. As a European traveler, he kept detailed travel diaries and lived in Frankfurt as a private scholar with technical, natural history and artistic interests, a collector of books, instruments, paintings, drawings and prints. His enthusiasm for everything technical, measurable and newly invented led to experimental learning in a wide variety of fields, but - since there was no compulsion to earn a living - rarely to long-term employment. Practical evidence of Uffenbach's activities are, for example, a renovated bridge over the Main, various large fireworks, diverse music and an opera as well as some copperplate engravings. His scientific activities are documented in handwritten records, such as more than 8,000 pages of travel diaries, five volumes of minutes of meetings of his learned society founded in Frankfurt, numerous letters and manuscripts of unpublished writings: Uffenbach enjoyed traveling, learning, reading and testing, but the breadth of his studies was more important to him than their depth. Uffenbach's own handwritten catalogs and inventories of the collections correlated manuscripts with printed books in the library, instruments, models, drawings, and copper engravings. The result was a complex, multi-part working tool that he bequeathed in 1736 to the newly founded University of Göttingen, which received it after his death in 1770. How did they become the men, they themselves represented in their „self-narratives“ and that we know today? Ingo Trüter examines the conditions which enabled the protagonists of this study to attain certain positions in the field of learning without assuming a biographical telos. Based on multiple types of sources and following a micro-historical approach, the study draws an illustrative image of men of learning around the year 1500, ranging from philosophical questions in the Wegestreit to the learned men’s furniture and interior fittings of their houses.

    Description: The term "social capital" has become a buzzword with a huge, already diffuse spectrum of application. This should give reason for conceptual and theoretical vigilance. What – in concrete - is the object when "social capital" is mentioned? This question has not been systematically dealt with and even less responsed in a satisfactory degree, although there are many contributions to the discussion of the term. The problem is labelled in the social sciences, but has not been resolved in the context of the specific social-scientific framework. This book takes the neglected metalinguistic perspective. Thus it advances the scientific maturity of the "social capital" debate and contributes to the establishment of a well-founded system in social science terms.     Description: The Göttingen Observatory, workplace of the famous scholar Carl Friedrich Gauss, is an important architectural monument. In 2005, it has been reconstructed jointly by the Georg-August-University and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen. Since then it serves as a representative building for the University and is the seat of the Academy. With the use of the historic rooms for exhibitions this imposing building is open to the public for the first time. 200 years ago the observatory represented the recent scientific findings of its time and moved the University of Göttingen into the leading group of the foremost research institutions in Europe at this time. Also due to its architecture it has been a big leap for Georg Heinrich Borheck, architecture of the University of Göttingen. The war of the Napoleonic era disrupted the attempt of Borheck to publish his description of the construction of the Göttingen observatory in 1805. But his writing is still relevant today and will be finally published with this band for the first time accessible to a wide public. It shows the principles on which public buildings were designed then, explains the importance of the construction in art- and science-historical perspectives and informs on the plans for the restoration of the observatory in a separate article and in the preface by the President of the Georg-August University Prof. Dr. Dr. hc Kurt von Figura.

Thus, media outlets gain influence on the public opinion and are able to paint the picture of criminal trials according to their own perception. The media tends to overdraw criminal cases rather than to report the unbiased facts. This leads to tensions between possibly diverging interests of the public, of the judiciary and of the media. This volume addresses these tensions from the perspectives of academics and practitioners, who discussed this issue during an interdisciplinary conference held at the Institute for Criminal Law at the Georg-August-University Göttingen.

What – in concrete - is the object when "social capital" is mentioned? This question has not been systematically dealt with and even less responsed in a satisfactory degree, although there are many contributions to the discussion of the term. The problem is labelled in the social sciences, but has not been resolved in the context of the specific social-scientific framework. This book takes the neglected metalinguistic perspective. Thus it advances the scientific maturity of the "social capital" debate and contributes to the establishment of a well-founded system in social science terms. It brings up social capital by combining an epistemological and ontological analysis and thus finally develops clarification of the concept.

Schaut man sich Untersuchungen dazu an, so scheint Sozialkapital für nahezu alles gut zu sein: sei es die Erhöhung des persönlichen Wohlbefindens, die Revitalisierung benachteiligter Stadtquartiere oder die Stärkung der Volkswirtschaft im globalisierten Standortwettbewerb - je mehr Sozialkapital, desto besser! Doch gerade die behauptete enorme Wirkungsbreite sollte zu begrifflicher und theoretischer Wachsamkeit anhalten. Was dient Wissenschaftlern als Gegenstand ihrer Erkenntnisbemühungen, wenn von »Sozialkapital« die Rede ist? Diese Frage klingt banal, ist aber bisher nicht systematisch bearbeitet oder gar in befriedigendem Maße beantwortet worden, obwohl doch zahlreiche Beiträge zur Begriffsdebatte vorliegen. So ist zwar das Problem in den Sozialwissenschaften benannt, doch im Kontext des speziellen sozialwissenschaftlichen Reflexionsrahmens nicht eingelöst worden. Das vorliegende Buch nimmt die bisher vernachlässigte metasprachliche Perspektive ein. Es erhöht damit den wissenschaftlichen Reifegrades der »Sozialkapital«-Debatte und trägt zur Etablierung eines wohlfundierten Systems sozialwissenschaftlicher Begriffe bei.     Description: For the people in the Early Modern Age, famines were regularly recurring phenomena. So not less than eight of these crises happened in the areas of Lower Saxony between 1690 and 1750, which had a lasting impact on various aspects of life for the contemporaries. Therefore topics of different historical subdisciplines like economic, social, cultural and environmental history are dealt with in this dissertation. Thus, this thesis aims to bridge the gap between climatically and socially determined patterns of hunger. With the help of the concept of vulnerability it is shown that hunger crises can neither be ascribed to natural processes nor human operations exclusively. In fact they were the outcome of a chain of human-nature-interactions and were perceived as such by the contemporaries. A further emphasis of this book is put on the examination of contemporary coping strategies. The hereby worked out explanatory and interpretive models proved to be determining how the contemporaries tried to cope with hunger on a personal and joint level. Regarding the latter it is shown that famines played a decisive role in the consolidation of leadership in the Early Modern Age. Because of their regular recurrence they worked as focal points of the negotiation of sovereignity between authorities and subjects more than any other crisis situation in this process.

    Description: The extensive collection of correspondences of Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchesse d’Orléans (known as Liselotte von der Pfalz), sister-in law of Louis XIV, is one of the few remaining sources with exceptional insight into the life at the court of the Sun King. Her letters contain numerous lively and witty descriptions of the appearances and bodily practices of the contemporaries she met there – descriptions that range from subtle anecdotes to scatological jokes. Especially the latter, sometimes paired with strong language, have led various scholars to believe that her writing style was not in accordance with the refined communication culture at the court. The perception of Liselotte’s writing style, characterized by literary and theatrical allusions, repartee, and a tendency towards detailed description of courtly life, seems to be dominated by a stereotypical classification of Liselotte as a “unrefined German” contrasted with the gallantry of the French. This study contradicts this assumption by analysing whether and to what extent the writing about the body in Liselotte’s letters follows the rules described in the handbooks on courtly communication of the Early Modern Period.

Aus diesem Grunde befasst sich die hier vorgelegte Publikation mit den klassischen, aber auch mit neueren Forschungsmethoden, vor allem mit der Erfassung des Lauf-, Zuwendungs- und Kaufverhaltens und mit der Erfassung kognitiver Prozesse beim Besuch eines stationären Geschäfts. Besondere Beachtung erfahren Validitätsaspekte sowie Selektivitäts- und Reaktivitätseffekte, die über die Aussagekraft der Befunde entscheiden. Um aufzuzeigen, wie mit begrenztem Aufwand möglichst viel in Erfahrung gebracht werden kann, wird eine abgestufte Verhaltensforschung am POS skizziert.     Description: As other Pacific Islands Countries, Fiji is shaped by processes of social transformations and global environmental change. This study utilises ethnographic ideals for enhancing cultural and social geographic research in the global south. A participatory in-depth analysis of rural life in three Fijian coastal villages is at the core of this study. This is framed by a historic-political overview of the burden of Fiji's colonial past. Fijian coastal villagers are not passive victims of global social transformation and climate change. Through neo-traditional movements they actively form processes of social and cultural change. Rural Fijian norms, values and cultural identity crystallize in robust communities. Via modern forms of communication and transportation Fijians established globalised networks securing individuals' quality of life. Family members living far from their home villages remain in contact with their relatives. This way they keep their Fijian Identities as source of wellbeing and as well support the villagers' material wealth and knowledge to enhance capabilities. Merely regarding hazardous climate change impacts the passed on knowledge is spread abridged and poorly fitting into local value systems. Therefore, misperceptions and maladaptations are prevalent. In consequence this study pleads for development agencies to act culturally sensitive and to critically reflect ethnocentric worldviews in order not to harm Fijian values and wellbeing.
    Description: Pazifikstaaten wie die Fidschi-Inseln sind wie kaum eine andere Region der Welt gekennzeichnet von gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen und dem globalen Umweltwandel. Auf Basis eines partizipativen Forschungsdesigns, durchgeführt in ausgewählten Küstendörfern, untersucht dieser Band die Auswirkungen der Globalisierung und des Klimawandels auf die Lebensqualität ihrer Bewohner. Dabei wird aufgezeigt, dass die Dorfbewohner keine passiven Opfer externer Prozesse sind, sondern aktiv ihr Leben gestalten. Mittels neo-traditioneller Bewegungen gelingt es den Bewohnern weitestgehend, ein festes Wertefundament als Grundlage ihrer kulturellen Identität zu bewahren. Eine intakte Gemeinschaft steht dabei im Zentrum spiritueller, ökonomischer und sozialer Werte. Im Zuge der gesellschaftlichen Transformation agieren die Gemeinschaften nicht mehr ortsgebunden, sondern bilden mithilfe moderner Transport- und Kommunikationstechnologien globalisierte Netzwerke – ohne dabei die Bezüge zu ihrer kulturellen Herkunft zu verlieren. Auswärts lebende Familienangehörige tragen so Wissen und materiellen Wohlstand in die Dorfgemeinschaften und erweitern die Handlungspotentiale und Lebensstandards der Küstendorfbewohner. Im Zuge der Wissensvermittlung erfolgt jedoch insbesondere die Darstellung des Klimawandels und seiner Gefahren verkürzt und nicht auf lokale Werte zurechtgeschnitten, sodass es auch zu Wahrnehmungsverzerrungen und Fehlanpassungen kommt. Im Kontext von Entwicklungszusammenarbeit rät diese Untersuchung daher zu kultureller Sensibilität und einer kritischen Reflektion ethnozentrischer Weltanschauungen, um die Lebensqualität in fidschianischen Dorfgemeinschaften nicht zu gefährden. In diesem Band werden ethnographische Ideale für eine kultur- und sozialgeographische Forschung im globalen Süden aufbereitet. Konzeptionell ist die Untersuchung in die kritische geographische Verwundbarkeits- und Transformationsforschung eingerahmt. In einem kulturräumlichen Überblick wird zunächst aus historisch-politischer Perspektive die Bedeutung postkolonialer Belastungen auf gegenwärtige Transformationsprozesse aufgezeigt. Das Herzstück bildet anschließend die ausführliche Analyse gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse auf die Lebensqualität in drei Küstendörfern der Fidschi-Inseln.

    Description: Human, animal and plant health is a field of work which offers opportunities for inter- and trans-disciplinary research. The whole topic bridges the natural and social sciences. Today, in a world of global environmental change it is widely recognized that human societies and their wellbeing depend on a sustainable equilibrium of ecosystem services and the possibility of cultural adaptation to global environmental change. The need to identify and quantify health risks related to global environmental change is now one of the most important challenges of humankind. Describing spatial (geographic, intra/inter-population) and temporal differences in health risks is an urgent task to understand societies’ vulnerabilities and priorities for interventions better. The Göttingen International Health Network (GIHN) is a research and teaching network in relation to this cross-cutting topic. The book provides a collection of articles which contribute to this issue of overriding importance and presents an overview of the GIHN launch event.

    Description: Pendjari National Park in northern Benin is not only a tourist attraction and an area for the protection of biodiversity, it is also a showcase for participatory management approaches. Since its foundation as an animal protection area in 1954 under French colonial rule, the park has been object of often conflictual but productive negotiations between different groups of neighboring dwellers, such as peasants, herdsmen and hunters, as well as the park administration itself. During 19 months of fieldwork, ethnographic data on conflicts and negotiation processes were collected. Their detailed analyses show how different groups of actors construct the park as a socially relevant entity. Data from historical investigation and an extended case study of the participatory attempts at cooperation between the park administration and local hunters illustrate the social construction of spaces, identities as well as norms, values and institutions: Local hunters consider the park primarily a nowadays illegal hunting ground and a domain of spirits, while park administrators and international development actors declare it a zone of state-protected biodiversity. By showing how the national park and related spaces, identities, norms, values and institutions are socially produced, the analysis contributes to recent debates in the field of human-environment interaction and especially political ecology. Moreover, it offers complex insights and practical recommendations regarding participatory approaches to the management of natural resources and especially national parks.

Ihre Abschaffung in den USA durch die Agrarreform von 2014 markierte den Bruch des bisherigen Trends zur Angleichung der Agrarpolitiken beider Akteure. Die vorliegende Arbeit erklärt mithilfe der Konvergenztheorie die Ursachen für die neu auftretenden Divergenzen. Es werden die Gründe für den Reformdruck in Bezug auf die Direktzahlungen identifiziert sowie die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den USA und der EU herausgearbeitet und bewertet. Schließlich werden die Konvergenzmuster untersucht und der Konvergenzprozess erklärt. Der Analyse liegt ein umfassender Vergleich der jeweiligen Entwicklung der Direktzahlungen zugrunde, einschließlich ihrer Behandlung in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks.

Obwohl es sich um eine eher kleine Sammlung handelt, erweist sich diese doch als erstaunlich repräsentativ, um das Kunstverständnis des 19. Jahrhunderts mit seinen wechselnden Prämissen sowie kunsttheoretischen und künstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen an konkreten Kunstwerken aufzuzeigen. Eine zentrale Rolle spielt dabei die Gattungstheorie: Die seit der Frühen Neuzeit vertretene Ausdifferenzierung der Malerei in profane und religiöse Historie, Genre, Landschaft, Stillleben, Tierstück und Porträt wurde über das gesamte 19. Jahrhundert hinweg kontrovers diskutiert, blieb aber als wertsetzendes System lange präsent. Der vorliegende, von Dozenten und Studierenden des Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars der Universität Göttingen gemeinsam erarbeitete Bestandskatalog nutzt die Gattungstheorie als „roten Faden“, um eine historische Perspektive auf den Bestand der Gemälde des 19.     Description: The heterologous or donogenous insemination is the artificial fertilization of an ovum for reproductive purposes with the sperm of an outside donor to save the affected couples a infertility. This method is long been offered and used by the modern reproductive medicine but, however raises a number of legal, human genetic and psychological issues that are not at sufficiently resolved in the circle of experts. The present volume addresses these questions and possible answers in an interdisciplinary discussion and explores solutions. The articles go back to a workshop, which was jointly organized in cooperation of the Centre for Medical Law and the Göttingen Institute of Human Genetics. The editors hope that the recommendations resulting from this will be able to provide important impetus and support to the leaders in this field, but also to legislation and case law.

Eingehend untersucht sie eine Stichprobe der Privatdozenten des SS 1812. Damals lehrten über 70% der Privatdozenten ohne Habilitation auf Basis ihrer Promotion als lesende Doktoren oder als Magister legens. Der erste Band bietet eine detaillierte Untersuchung des bisher nicht erforschten Promotionswesens der vier Fakultäten und geht auf die Disputationspraxis ein. Wie promovierte man in einer Zeit, in der alles auf Latein abgemacht wurde: die Thesen und/oder Dissertation, das Rigorosum des Examens und die Inauguraldisputation? Für die Habilitation war nur eine weitere Disputation notwendig. Zwar war die Georgia Augusta um 1800 die wohl bedeutendste Universität ihrer Zeit, aber ihre Regelungen zur Promotion und Habilitation und die eingehend untersuchte „Observanz“ der Prüfungspraxis waren nicht selten zweierlei. Die Darstellung der Institution „ältere Privatdozentur“ im ersten Teil wird im zweiten Band durch biographische Skizzen von 32 Privatdozenten des Sommersemesters 1812 ergänzt. Sie verdeutlichen, dass die Privatdozentur nur für wenige eine Pflanzschule künftiger Professoren war, als die sie der Göttinger Orientalist Michaelis 1773 bezeichnete — nur sechs Privatdozenten erreichten eine Professur. Der Regelfall war ein nicht habilitierter Privatlehrer ohne Berufungsaussicht, der mit seinem Zweitberuf den gehaltlosen Privatdozenten in sich ernährte. Das Karrierespektrum in der gewählten Stichprobe ist weit gefächert: es reicht von dem bedeutenden Arabistikprofessor G. W. Freytag an der Universität Bonn bis zum örtlichen Notar J. G. Quentin, der am Rande des akademischen Proletariats stand, bis hin zu dem jung dahingegangenen Autor Ernst Schulze, der für Cäcilie Tychsen einfühlsame Poesie schrieb und posthum zu einem Lieblingsdichter seiner Zeit wurde. Die Stichprobe schließt den Friseurgesellen Ch. Focke ein, der sich zum Mathematikdozenten aufschwang, sowie den Musicus J. N. Forkel, einen Mitbegründer der Musikwissenschaft. Die Arbeit beruht vor allem auf den Akten des Universitätsarchivs und führt daher viele Aspekte des alltäglichen Mit- und Gegeneinanders an der Georgia Augusta auf, die im ausführlichen Personen- und Sachregister aufgeführt sind. Abgerundet werden die Einsichten in den akademischen Alltag durch den Blick auf andere Universitäten: von Salamanca, zu dessen Promotionsbräuchen auch der Stierkampf gehörte, bis hin zur Erfurter Universität, an der man eine Promotion kaufen konnte und darüber hinaus auf W. von Humboldts Neugründung, die sich 1810 am östlichen Horizont zeigte.

Sie verdeutlichen, dass die Privatdozentur nur für wenige eine Pflanzschule künftiger Professoren war, als die sie der Göttinger Orientalist Michaelis 1773 bezeichnete — nur sechs Privatdozenten erreichten eine Professur. Der Regelfall war ein nicht habilitierter Privatlehrer ohne Berufungsaussicht, der mit seinem Zweitberuf den gehaltlosen Privatdozenten in sich ernährte. Das Karrierespektrum in der gewählten Stichprobe ist weit gefächert: es reicht von dem bedeutenden Arabistikprofessor G. W. Freytag an der Universität Bonn bis zum örtlichen Notar J. G. Quentin, der am Rande des akademischen Proletariats stand, bis hin zu dem jung dahingegangenen Autor Ernst Schulze, der für Cäcilie Tychsen einfühlsame Poesie schrieb und posthum zu einem Lieblingsdichter seiner Zeit wurde. Die Stichprobe schließt den Friseurgesellen Ch. Focke ein, der sich zum Mathematikdozenten aufschwang, sowie den Musicus J. N. Forkel, einen Mitbegründer der Musikwissenschaft. Die Arbeit beruht vor allem auf den Akten des Universitätsarchivs und führt daher viele Aspekte des alltäglichen Mit- und Gegeneinanders an der Georgia Augusta auf, die im ausführlichen Personen- und Sachregister aufgeführt sind. Abgerundet werden die Einsichten in den akademischen Alltag durch den Blick auf andere Universitäten: von Salamanca, zu dessen Promotionsbräuchen auch der Stierkampf gehörte, bis hin zur Erfurter Universität, an der man eine Promotion kaufen konnte und darüber hinaus auf W. von Humboldts Neugründung, die sich 1810 am östlichen Horizont zeigte.

Flankiert wird diese Entwicklung von einer zunehmenden Konzentration auf der Seite der wissenschaftlichen Verleger, die in einigen Fachwissenschaften wohl schon fast zu monopolartigen Situationen geführt hat. Umgekehrt nehmen auf der Seite der Abnehmer - der Bibliotheken und der Wissenschaftler, aber auch der sonstigen Öffentlichkeit - die finanziellen Möglichkeiten immer mehr ab, die zunehmende Zahl an Veröffentlichungen noch zu erwerben und dem interessierten Publikum zur Verfügung zu stellen.     Description: The present study aims at disclosing a methodological prejudice which has misled factor analysis since its beginning. Simple structure, the guiding principle for factor rotation (Thurstone, 1935/1947), is regarded as a questionable dogma. The Thurstone principle impedes the discovery of latent sources of variance on which manifest empirical variables are based. This criticism is elucidated by theoretical considerations and by verbatim quotations of critical authors. The present calamity of factorial research is deemed to be due to general flaws of methodical reasoning. One-sided mathematical formalization in the discipline has lost its objectives by ignoring ordinary sources of knowledge and linguistic processing. The problem of simple structure cannot be solved by circumplex- and structural equation procedures which suffer from the same flaws as simple structure modelling. A paradigm change is overdue. An alternative factor transformation modeling complex structures is demanded, it will be delineated in chapter 2. This chapter is a sequel of chapter 1 (Ertel, 2009) in which varimax, the procedure of factor rotation commonly used to generate simple structure, is replaced with varimin. Varimin aims at manifesting interacting aspects of latent structural components. The model of complexity which is outlined by initial factor extractions is optimized. The new method raises a number of issues of which five are discussed at length. Are varimin factors interpretable Can latent sources of covariance, being complex already by initial solutions, be rendered more complex? Have simple structure solutions in common practice not been tolerable, to say the least? Varimin factor loadings are often bipolar. How to interpret the bipolarity of varimin factors? Does varimin reveal contributions of variance originating from methodical sources? Ten empirical applications of varimin transformation serve as examples. Particular features of transformation to complex structure, revealing latent sources of covariance (by varimin), are compared with pertinent results obtained from transformations to simple structure (by varimax). Varimax will remain useful merely for clustering objectives. Attention is also drawn to limitations of the methodical innovation. Eighteen matrices with intercorrelations of eight subtest variables of the intelligence test I-S-T, widely used in Germany, were subjected to principal component analysis, the resulting factors were rotated by varimin towards optimal complex structure. The 18 varimin solutions were aggregated, two factors resulted: Varimin-F1 represented a general factor g (‘general or basic intelligence’), varimin-F2 represented an achievement-modifying factor, obviously dependent on preceding educational training and learning (‘learning assets’, l). The validity of varimin-F1, general intelligence, was ascertained by high correlations between g and test scores of general intelligence, operationalized by culture-free tests CFT und FRT. The interpretation of varimin-F2 found support by significant correlations with learning-dependent school grades and scores in orthography and arithmetic. The 18 PCA-factors were also transformed by varimax to simple structure. This transformation caused a splitting up of initial g into two seemingly separate factors, called ‘fluid’ and ‘crystallized’ intelligence by convention. In addition, differences between varimax F1 (fluid) and F2 (crystallized) regarding correlations with external criteria (general intelligence vs. school grades, training scores in orthography and arithmetic) which should have emerged were missing. The aggregate of varimax results yielded an unexpected third factor with considerable weight which, however, turned out to be an artifact of simple structure. Apparently, simple structure modelling of intelligence test data blends general intelligence with learning effects. Rotation of intelligence data to simple structure does not reveal, as it should, independent contributions of latent functional components. The results of a factorial study are reported using sports data whose underlying sources of variance are more transparent than those of invisible mental data: decathlon record scores. The aim was to compare varimin and varimax results regarding factorial stability and interpretability. It is shown that varimin factors revealed latent sources of variance in interaction, while varimax factors yielded obscure clusters of those sources of variance. In addition, factor structures obtained by varimin rotation were more robust to changing data sources than those obtained by varimax rotation. The new methodical turn might revive exploratory factorial research which, due to questionable results of the past, has lost reputation.

The anthology addresses fundamental social, cultural and ethical questions of human-technology interaction and, from a cultural and social scientific research perspective, addresses the question of how technology alters everyday life, cultural orders and knowledge systems.

    Description: Traffic violations represent by far the most significant number of misconducts punished by law. This is due to the fact that the majority of the population actively participates in road traffic. Despite the importance of this topic, only a limited number of empirical studies have been conducted about traffic offenses. The present study intends to reduce this deficit in the field of traffic infringements by analyzing nationwide data about sentences and cases of repeated offenses, differentiating by seriousness of the misdemeanors and their general and traffic specific penalties. For the first time, a complete data set from the "Bundeszentralregister" (Federal Central Criminal Register) is evaluated. This traffic violation data set contains records of 250,000 people. As a result, this research incorporates nearly all people convicted in a specific year in Germany. Under due consideration of criminal records, these data are classified into distinct categories depending on the seriousness of the offense and the type of punishment. Furthermore, this study appraises the correlation between traffic specific reconviction rates and the success of related punishments.
    Description: Die Straßenverkehrsdelinquenz ist mit weitem Abstand der quantitativ bedeutsamste Bereich staatlich geahndeten Fehlverhaltens. Selbst bei Außerachtlassung der Ordnungswidrigkeiten stellen Verkehrsdelikte einen Großteil der justiziell behandelten Kriminalität. Trotz der hohen Bedeutung der Straßenverkehrskriminalität existieren nur wenige repräsentative empirische Forschungen zu dieser Thematik. Die Arbeit will hier Abhilfe schaffen. Sie stellt bundesweite Daten zur Strafzumessung und Rückfälligkeit vor, und zwar differenziert nach den wesentlichen Straßenverkehrsdelikten sowie den allgemeinen und verkehrsspezifischen Sanktionen. Dafür wertet sie erstmalig einen kompletten Datensatz aus dem Bundeszentralregister aus, der rund 250.000 Personen mit Straßenverkehrsdelinquenz umfasst. Damit stützt sich die Untersuchung auf die annähernd vollständige Grundgesamtheit aller Personen, die in einem bestimmten Jahr in Deutschland gerichtlich verurteilt oder sonst in eintragungspflichtiger Form sanktioniert wurden. Dabei geht es zum einen um die Straftaten und die Sanktionierung von Verkehrsdelinquenten, insbesondere in Abhängigkeit von deren strafrechtlicher Vorbelastung. Zum anderen nutzt die Arbeit die spezifische Analyse der zu Grunde liegenden Legalbewährungsuntersuchung, um Aussagen zur Wiederverurteilung und damit zum Erfolg der Sanktionen, insbesondere der verkehrsspezifischen Reaktionen, einzuschätzen.

    Description: By the 1920s and early 1930s the dime novel had already become well established as a medium for serial fiction and it developed innovative ways of shaping the temporality of literary communication: Recurring heroes made an appearance in more than one dime novel series at the same time, some even across media; publishers and writers found collective forms of text production not aiming to create one timeless work of art, but a continuous series of texts; readers learned to orient themselves with competing publishing schedules of different media and to comprehend the text world of a dime novel series by connecting a series of texts. The book deals with the question of how publishers, writers and readers shaped ‚seriality‘ in the process of creating the fictional worlds of dime novels.
