    Description: This publication originates from the research project "The action of joy, happiness, contentment and rejoicing as contemporary imperatives: a factory of artificial smiles", which proposed to think about the phenomenon of the quasi-obligatory nature of being happy in order to adapt to life in contemporary society. One of its products was a lecture in the Psychology program of the same name of this publication, in the form of a conversation that brought together different specialists to discuss the topic. These same specialists were invited to elaborate the pages of this book, and others were invited to broaden the discussion. A work conceived and written by several hands.

    Description: Grensverleggende analyse van Duitse propaganda in België in de beginfase van WOI Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van “fake news” avant la lettre.

    Description: Achttien bekende Belgen bieden een unieke blik op het Belgische collectieve geheugen Welke gebeurtenissen, plekken en figuren blijven er hangen in het geheugen van achttien prominente Belgen als ze aan hun land denken? Op deze vraag zochten Franstalige en Nederlandstalige academici gedurende enkele jaren een antwoord. Ze organiseerden ontmoetingen met Belgische duo’s uit uiteenlopende maatschappelijke domeinen: de journalisten Nina Verhaeghe en Christian Laporte, de politici Herman Van Rompuy en Philippe Moureaux, de dichters Dirk Van Bastelaere en Laurence Vielle, de regisseurs Jan Verheyen en Adil El Arbi, de schrijvers Kristien Hemmerechts en Vincent Engel, de atleten Laurence Rase en Jean-Michel Saive, de zakenmensen Yves Noël & Christ'l Joris, de syndicalisten Caroline Copers en Felipe Van Keirsbilck, en de imam en islamleraar Brahim Laytouss en theologe Myriam Tonus. Je ontdekt in deze unieke dialogen hoe er tijdens de ontmoetingen gedeelde herinneringen zijn – zoals de Rode Duivels op het WK in 1986 of de zaak Dutroux – maar ook waar de herinneringen tussen de gesprekspartners sterk uiteenlopen – over de Eerste Wereldoorlog bijvoorbeeld, of over Brussel. De verschillen lopen vaak langs de lijnen van de gemeenschappen van ons land, maar zeker niet altijd. Ook verschillen tussen de maatschappelijke domeinen van de gesprekspartners worden duidelijk. In een uitgebreide conclusie brengen de redacteurs de belangrijkste rode draden en lacunes in de gesprekken samen: wat zit er in het Belgische collectieve geheugen, wat niet en hoe komt dat geheugen naar boven in de gesprekken. Dialogen over België biedt een unieke blik op België met herkenbare herinneringen en verrassende inzichten voor Belgen en niet-Belgen.

    Description: This book is the partial result of a research project called "Female electoral candidacies transformed into marketing products and fake news against female candidates: a comparative analysis between Brazil, Colombia and Mexico". The growing female participation in decision making in Latin America invites us to read with more patience and caution the phenomenon of the emergence of a type of feminization of politics. Two countries with trajectories marked by political scandals and corruption, such as Brazil and Mexico, show that if it was difficult for women to become protagonists as political subjects - note the feminist movements of the 70s, 80s and 90s and the recent achievements in terms of public policies for the protection of women - it is not very difficult to understand the difficulty that these women faced and still face to become protagonists in the political scenario of their countries, i.e. political actors. Therefore, this book reveals only some aspects of the political path that these women must face on a daily basis in order to gain access to spaces of power.

    Description: Este libro es el resultado parcial de un proyecto de investigación llamado “Las candidaturas electorales femeninas transformadas en producto de mercadeo y las fake news contra candidatas mujeres: un análisis comparado entre Brasil, Colombia y México”. La creciente participación femenina en la tomada de decisiones en América Latina nos invita a leer con más paciencia y cautela el fenómeno del surgimiento de un tipo de feminización de la política. Dos países con trayectorias marcadas en escándalos y corrupciones políticas como lo son Brasil y México evidencian que si a las mujeres les fue dificultado el camino para su protagonismo como sujeta política, nótese los movimientos feministas de los años 70, 80 y 90 y las recientes conquistas en términos de políticas públicas de protección a las mujeres, no es muy difícil de comprender la dificultad que esas mujeres enfrentaron y enfrentan para tornarse protagonistas del escenario político de sus países, es decir, actoras políticas. Por lo tanto, este libro revela solamente algunos aspectos del camino político al que esas mujeres deben enfrentarse cotidianamente para acceder a los espacios de poder.

    Description: The purpose of this book is to incite a series of reflections on the subjective tensions and discourses of Law in a postmodern society where the act of existing advocates a liquidity between pragmatism supported by the values of consumption as an existential fetish that imprisons existence itself, and anyone who is outside this chain of consumption loses the very character of humanity - legitimized through the logic of consumption. In this moment of narcissism the subject is created - trapped in his own image constructed in front of others with the need to be appreciated and the object of consumption-fetish of his equals. Whoever cannot consume, whoever is outside the chain of consumption loses his status of "citizen"... citizenship contemplates those who are immersed in the game of consumption. This "fetish of capital" (Bautista, 2017) that produces an idolatry towards utopian values and sacrifices social coexistence itself in the name of an economic model, does not admit any other form of development and propitiates moral discourses where those who are absent from the policies of these discourses are marginalized. Is Law as a regulatory discipline - in Foucauldian terms - a participant in this fetishist logic, once this discipline regulates (Foucault, 2012) social relations?

    Description: Este libro tiene como propuesta incitar a una serie de reflexiones sobre las tensiones subjetivas y los discursos del Derecho en una sociedad posmoderna donde el acto de existir preconiza una liquidez entre el pragmatismo respaldado por los valores del consumo como fetiche existencial que aprisiona la existencia misma, y todo aquel que se encuentra al margen de esa cadena de consumo pierde el propio carácter de humanidad – legitimada a través de esa lógica del consumo. En este momento de narcisismo se crea el sujeto-atrapado en su propia imagen construida delante de los demás con la necesidad de ser apreciado y objeto de consumo-fetiche de sus iguales. Quien no puede consumir, quien está fuera de la cadena de consumo pierde su status de “ciudadano”… la ciudadanía contempla los que están inmersos en el juego del consumo. Ese “fetiche del capital” (Bautista, 2017) que produce una idolatría hacia valores utópicos y sacrifica la propia convivencia social en nombre de un modelo económico, no admite otra forma de desarrollo y propicia discursos morales donde los que están ausentes de las políticas de esos discursos son marginados. ¿Acaso el Derecho como disciplina regulatoria – en términos foucaultianos – es partícipe de esa lógica fetichista, una vez que esa disciplina normatiza (Foucault, 2012) las relaciones sociales?

    Description: The requiem (or the death mass) is one of the oldest and longest surviving genres in Western music history. For hundreds of years it only existed in its original Gregorian guise, but from about 1450 many great composers were inspired to write of masterly new death masses Dies Irae introduces the reader to these masterpieces in an accessible way, without any prior musical knowledge being required. After an introduction to the meaning and structure of the text and music of the ancient Latin Mass for the Dead, a chronicle in three parts follows that guides the reader through the history of the requiem. In separate chapters, all the major and well-known requiems (including by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, Fauré, Britten and Webber), as well as some less popular but equally poignant works (such as the requiems by Ockeghem, Schütz, Weill, Ligeti, Stravinsky and Zimmermann). Each requiem is discussed according to a fixed pattern, so that the reader can freely browse through different periods and compositions: first each work is situated music-historically, followed by a short discussion of each part separately. By linking the discussions to one reference recording per work, the reader can immediately test the explanation against listening practice. Under the direction of Pieter Bergé, and with the cooperation of Jan Christiaens, all contributions to 'Dies Irae. Chronicle of the Requiem' written by authors who are affiliated with the Musicology research unit of KU Leuven as teachers, researchers or alumnus.

Honderden jaren heeft het enkel bestaan in zijn oorspronkelijke gregoriaanse gedaante, maar vanaf ca. 1450 hebben heel wat grote componisten zich laten inspireren tot het schrijven van magistrale nieuwe dodenmissen. Een zinvolle associatie, want, zoals verder in deze publicatie zal blijken, Erasmus schrijven en drijven heeft een onmisbare impuls gegeven aan de opbouw op Europees vlak van een werkelijk internationale cultuur die de middeleeuwse gedachtenwereld moest aflossen. Talrijk zijn de Europese universiteiten waar Erasmus een tijdlang heeft gestudeerd of gewerkt, Parijs, Leuven, Cambridge, Turijn, ... en nog talrijker die universiteiten waar hij vrienden, bewonderaars of tegenstanders vond.

    Description: During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre.

Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Reeds kort na de Belgische onafhankelijkheid in 1830 zien we de aanzet van wat men een katholieke zuil is gaan noemen. Godsdienstige groepen en kerken verkeren steeds in een spanning tussen een hang naar maatschappelijk isolement en bekeringsijver, tussen bescherming en verovering. Deze termen worden in de christelijke organisatiewereld dan ook ervaren als geladen, negatieve begrippen. In deze KADOC-bundel noemen sociologen en historici het verschijnsel nochtans onomwonden bij de naam. Zij zoeken nuchter naar de historische oorsprong en de verklaringsgronden van de katholieke zuilvorming. De focus wordt daarbij gericht op de beslissende momenten.     Description: Latin America has been hit by countless social, political and economic conflicts throughout its history, which have unleashed problems related to violence and social inequality, job creation, and attractiveness to investors. When these aspects manage to be regulated and transformed in favor of the economic and social development of a territory, society can approach a State that favors welfare conditions. However, the high challenges that a national government may encounter on this path are almost impossible to overcome. Even so, an alternative way that some communities and cities have opted for has been to turn their gaze inward, that is, based on their territory, their local culture and effective citizen participation, routes can be identified that dynamize productivity and competitiveness in a sustainable manner. Each of the actors involved in these practices must recognize the potential and real resources of the territory and the community in order to be used to strengthen it. The last few years, more specifically since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic contingency, brought high threats to the growth, development and welfare of countries, which resulted in major economic and social challenges that each government is still trying to overcome.

    Description: Latinoamérica ha sido golpeada por un sinnúmero de conflictos de orden social, político y económico, a lo largo de su historia, que han desencadenado problemáticas alrededor de la violencia y desigualdad social, la generación de empleos, y el atractivo a inversionistas. Cuando estos aspectos logran ser regulados y transformados en favor del desarrollo económico y social de un territorio, la sociedad se puede acercar a un Estado que favorece las condiciones de bienestar. Sin embargo, los altos retos que un gobierno nacional puede encontrar en este camino resultan casi imposibles de superar. Aun así, una forma alternativa que han optado algunas comunidades y ciudades ha sido la de volver la mirada hacia dentro, es decir, sustentados en su territorio, su cultura local y la participación ciudadana eficaz, se pueden identificar rutas que dinamicen la productividad y competitividad de manera sostenible. Cada uno de los actores que intervienen en estas prácticas, deben reconocer los recursos potenciales y reales con que cuente el territorio y la comunidad a fin de ser utilizadas para el fortalecimiento de la misma. Los últimos años, más específicamente desde la aparición de la contingencia por la pandemia por Covid-19, trajo altas amenazas al crecimiento, desarrollo y bienestar de los países, que se tradujo en grandes retos económicos y sociales que cada gobierno aún intenta sortear. Uno de los desafíos obedeció hacia el repensar la estructura económica que soporta la actividad productiva de la nación, más allá de proponer conocidas herramientas fiscales o monetarias; bajo este panorama, muchas economías se dieron cuenta de la necesidad de ser autosostenibles con los recursos propios que tiene la nación.

    Description: Het vormsel: een omstreden sacrament. In Vlaanderen wordt het officieel verbonden met een plechtige herdenking van het doopsel en een geloofsbelijdenis. Voor de meesten betekent het vormsel een overgangsritueel, een toegangsticket tot de wereld van de volwassenen met alle daaraan verbonden voordelen, zoals horloge, bankrekening, vooraan in de auto zitten... Er zijn er die het beleven als een ""volwassen engagement"" in de Kerk, voor anderen is het een ""tot ziens"" of een adieu aan de Kerk. Was het vroeger anders? In deze bundel met bijdragen van historici, sociologen en theologen wordt aangetoond dat het vormsel, zoals wij dat nu kennen, een recent verschijnsel is. Pas in de 19de eeuw slaagde de Kerk erin het sacrament aan belang te doen winnen. Na het tweede Vaticaans Concilie kreeg het langzaam zijn huidige vorm en betekenis. Deze bundel benadert het vormsel vanuit verschillende invalshoeken. Het resultaat: een boeiende doorlichting, waaruit blijkt dat het vormsel als overgangsritueel nog toekomst heeft. In een kerkgemeenschap die wordt opgevat als een open volkskerk, biedt het vormsel de pastoraal nieuwe perspectieven. Mits een juiste aanwending van catechese en liturgie kan dit sacrament aangegrepen worden als een kans tot verdere evangelisering, zowel van jongeren als van volwassenen.

    Description: The purpose of this book is to incite a series of reflections on the subjective tensions and discourses of Law in a postmodern society where the act of existing advocates a liquidity between pragmatism supported by the values of consumption as an existential fetish that imprisons existence itself, and anyone who is outside this chain of consumption loses the very character of humanity - legitimized through the logic of consumption. In this moment of narcissism the subject is created - trapped in his own image constructed in front of others with the need to be appreciated and the object of consumption-fetish of his equals. Whoever cannot consume, whoever is outside the chain of consumption loses his status of "citizen"... citizenship contemplates those who are immersed in the game of consumption. This "fetish of capital" (Bautista, 2017) that produces an idolatry towards utopian values and sacrifices social coexistence itself in the name of an economic model, does not admit any other form of development and propitiates moral discourses where those who are absent from the policies of these discourses are marginalized. Is Law as a regulatory discipline - in Foucauldian terms - a participant in this fetishist logic, once this discipline regulates (Foucault, 2012) social relations?

    Description: Este libro tiene como propuesta incitar a una serie de reflexiones sobre las tensiones subjetivas y los discursos del Derecho en una sociedad posmoderna donde el acto de existir preconiza una liquidez entre el pragmatismo respaldado por los valores del consumo como fetiche existencial que aprisiona la existencia misma, y todo aquel que se encuentra al margen de esa cadena de consumo pierde el propio carácter de humanidad – legitimada a través de esa lógica del consumo. En este momento de narcisismo se crea el sujeto-atrapado en su propia imagen construida delante de los demás con la necesidad de ser apreciado y objeto de consumo-fetiche de sus iguales. Quien no puede consumir, quien está fuera de la cadena de consumo pierde su status de “ciudadano”… la ciudadanía contempla los que están inmersos en el juego del consumo. Ese “fetiche del capital” (Bautista, 2017) que produce una idolatría hacia valores utópicos y sacrifica la propia convivencia social en nombre de un modelo económico, no admite otra forma de desarrollo y propicia discursos morales donde los que están ausentes de las políticas de esos discursos son marginados. ¿Acaso el Derecho como disciplina regulatoria – en términos foucaultianos – es partícipe de esa lógica fetichista, una vez que esa disciplina normatiza (Foucault, 2012) las relaciones sociales?

For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city. Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions. Together, the participating artists and invited authors unfold the blueprint of Congoville, an imaginary city that still subconsciously affects us, but also encourages us to envision a decolonial utopia. René Ramírez Fernández, of notable academic experience, in his role as Coordinator and one of the authors of the book, achieves in the compilation that the researchers show their awareness for the care of the environment and their visible concern for the abuse of non-renewable energies advocating, with scientific argument, for an energy balance for Colombia, promoting an energy transition, for the use of renewable energies and the use of biodigesters for the reduction of the carbon footprint. It should be noted that each of the contributions that you will find in the book are the result of research that has had as a starting point the collection of information, the analysis of real statistical data and the use of a methodology that ensures that the conclusions that are socialized in each of the four chapters of the book are important contributions that have a scientific support.

Far from being a marginal migration, as has been believed until now, the presence of northern migrants was strategic for the expansion and maintenance of the Hispanic monarchy due to their contribution of labour, technological knowledge, commercial networks, and transnational capital. From the cross-sectional analysis of the impact of this migration on the society, politics, and economy of New Spain, this work shows how it is impossible to tell the story of the Spanish empire without taking into account the role that non-Spanish Europeans played in its formation and evolution.

    Description: Tijdens mijn onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van het Leids Gymnasium kreeg ik in de bibliotheek van het Gemeentearchief in Leiden het boekje Petrus Bloccius in handen, dat de titel draagt: Praecepta Petri Bloccii formandis puerorum moribus perutilia. In de catalogus van de bibliotheek wordt het aangemerkt als 'zeer zeldzaam' met daarbij de aantekening dat het in 'gesloten kast' wordt bewaard. Het boekje is aan het einde van de vorige eeuw voor het eerst gesignaleerd en uiterst beknopt beschreven. Om het toegankelijk te maken heb ik deze teksteditie verzorgd en er een vertaling aan toegevoegd. Een inleiding over Petrus Bloccius leven en andere werken gaat aan de teksteditie vooraf. Waar de betekenis van sommige verzen mij voor problemen stelde, heb ik een beroep kunnen doen enerzijds op de deskundigheid van Professor dr. C.L. Heesakkers, anderzijds op de eruditie van drs. N. van der Blom. Beiden dank ik hartelijk voor hun steun. De Engelse tekst van de summary verzorgd door Mw. A. Reichart.

    Description: This book is the partial result of a research project called "Female electoral candidacies transformed into marketing products and fake news against female candidates: a comparative analysis between Brazil, Colombia and Mexico". The growing female participation in decision making in Latin America invites us to read with more patience and caution the phenomenon of the emergence of a type of feminization of politics. Two countries with trajectories marked by political scandals and corruption, such as Brazil and Mexico, show that if it was difficult for women to become protagonists as political subjects - note the feminist movements of the 70s, 80s and 90s and the recent achievements in terms of public policies for the protection of women - it is not very difficult to understand the difficulty that these women faced and still face to become protagonists in the political scenario of their countries, i.e. political actors. Dos países con trayectorias marcadas en escándalos y corrupciones políticas como lo son Brasil y México evidencian que si a las mujeres les fue dificultado el camino para su protagonismo como sujeta política, nótese los movimientos feministas de los años 70, 80 y 90 y las recientes conquistas en términos de políticas públicas de protección a las mujeres, no es muy difícil de comprender la dificultad que esas mujeres enfrentaron y enfrentan para tornarse protagonistas del escenario político de sus países, es decir, actoras políticas. La idea de intentar hacer una aproximación a los estudios de la realidad del siglo XXI en respecto a la estética de la violencia, entendiendo esa estética como la presentación de esa violencia particular de la contemporaneidad con sus instrumentos facilitadores, con sus discursos y sus prácticas que posibilitan la naturalización de una política castradora de derechos. ¿Esta estética de la violencia en nuestra contemporaneidad se porta de manera similar a la estética de procesos históricos anteriores? Bastide (2006) cuando analiza la estética argumenta que la sociedad moldea la reacción frente a ella, y de igual forma aquí la sociedad moldea las prácticas de la violencia, sobre todo cuando analizamos la violencia y su relación con las cuestiones de género. La violencia de género es practicada igualmente por la sociedad.

    Description: In de loop van de geschiedenis zijn heel wat koningen doelbewust en met geweld om het leven gebracht. Zij stierven op het schavot of werden het slachtoffer van een aanslag. Achter de moorden zaten nu eens familieleden of politieke tegenstanders, dan weer misnoegde onderdanen of buitenlandse vijanden. De moordenaars gebruikten gif of een dolk, en later pistolen of bommen. Zij deden het heimelijk of zochten juist de publiciteit. Vaak beriepen zij zich op het feit dat de vorst zijn macht had misbruikt en dus een 'tiran' was. In dat geval was koningsmoord immers, volgens filosofen en pamflettisten, toegelaten en zelfs wenselijk. In dit boek sterven Julius Caesar en Karel de Goede, Mary Stuart en Willem van Oranje, Ludwig II van Beieren en tsaar Aleksander II van Rusland, en vele andere koningen, keizers, graven en pausen. De tragiek van hun koninklijke levens heeft altijd tot de verbeelding gesproken en was een bron van inspiratie in literatuur, theater, film, muziek. De verbeelding van de koningsmoord weerspiegelt opvattingen en politieke praktijken die, van de oudheid tot de twintigste eeuw, een betekenisvolle evolutie hebben doorgemaakt. De geschiedenis van de koningsmoord is de geschiedenis van het koningschap zelf.

    Description: In dit bekroonde boek ('Provinciale prijs historisch onderzoek 2006', van de provincie Vlaams-Brabant) worden de ontwikkelingen die volgden op de splitsing van de Leuvense tweetalige universiteit, op magistrale wijze in kaart gebracht. In 1968 werd een regime van autoritaire monseigneursen statusgevoelige professoren ten grave gedragen. In de euforie om de autonomie koos de nieuwe, Nederlandstalige universiteit voor de vlucht vooruit. Maar in het midden van de jaren 1970 maakte het revolutionaire elan plaats voor gevoelens van ontnuchtering. Daaraan kwam pas in het midden van de jaren 1980 een einde. De universiteit werd toen als het ware ‘heruitgevonden’. Het onderzoek werd geprofessionaliseerd, het onderwijs verruimd, de contacten met de maatschappij benadrukt. Sindsdien werd de horizon steeds weidser. De stad op de berg vertelt op meeslepende wijze het verhaal van de strijd om zelfstandigheid, van contestatie en verzakelijking, van wetenschap en engagement. Het boek is een absolute aanrader voor iedereen die de Leuvense universiteit en haar gemeenschap van professoren en studenten, maar ook van laboranten, bibliothecarissen en technici beter wil leren.
