    Beschreibung: Abstract
    Beschreibung: SeisComP is a seismological software for data acquisition, processing, distribution and interactive analysis. The seismological software package has evolved within a decade from pure acquisition modules to a fully featured real-time earthquake monitoring software. The SeedLink protocol for seismic data transmission has been the core of SeisComP from the very beginning. Later additions included simple, purely automatic event detection, location and magnitude determination capabilities. Especially within the development of the 3rd-generation SeisComP, also known as SeisComP3 automatic processing capabilities have been augmented by graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for visualization, rapid event review and quality control.Communication between the modules is achieved using a dedicated messaging system that allows distributed computing and remote review. For seismological metadata exchange export/import tools to/from QuakeML and FDSN StationXML are available, which also provide convenient interfaces with 3rd-party software. The initial SeisComP3 development took place at GFZ between 2006 and 2008 within the GITEWS project (German Indonesian Tsunami Early Warning System) and continued with increasing engagement of gempa GmbH, a software company established by the initial development team of the GFZ.

    Beschreibung: Die Andenkordillere entstand entlang des westlichen Randes von Südamerika aufgrund der Subduktion der ozeanischen Nazca-Platte unter die kontinentale Südamerikaplatte seit dem Jura. Als solche werden die Anden als ein klassisches Beispiel eines Orogens entlang eines aktiven Kontinentalrandes betrachtet. Obwohl die gegenwärtige Physiographie das Ergebnis der Andinen Tektonik ist, sind die Zentralanden das Ergebnis von einem komplexen Zusammenspiel von Präkambrischen und Paläozoischen Terrane-Akretionen und Phasen von Kompression und Extension. Die Puna und die Ostkordillere spielen in diesem Zusammenhang eine entscheidende Rolle in der tektonischen Entwicklung der Zentralanden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung befasst sich mit dem Gebiet der nördlichen argentinischen Puna und der Ostkordillere, von etwa 22°S bis 24°S und 65 °W bis 66°30' W. Es wurden etwa 1200 km Seismik interpretiert, deren Ergebnis als Randbedingung in die Konstruktion des gravimetrischen 3D Modells des Gebietes einging.
    Beschreibung: The Andes Mountains developed along the western margin of SouthAmerica in response to the subduction of the oceanic Nazca Plate below the South American plate since the Jurassic times. It is considered as one of the classic examples of a mountain chain developed in an active continental margin. Although their present physiography is given by the Andean tectonics, the Central Andes are the result of complex interplay of Precambrian and Paleozoic terrane accretion and phases of compression and extension. The Puna and Eastern Cordillera represent key elements in the tectonic evolution of the Central Andes. The present study covers a region of the northern Puna and Eastern Cordillera extending from approximately 22°S to 24°S and 65 °W to 66°30'W in Argentina. About 1200 km of seismic lines were interpreted and were used as a geometrical constraint for the construction of a 3D gravity model of the area.

    Beschreibung: This paper reports on the results of an independent evaluation of the techniques presented in the VLDB 2007 paper "Scalable Semantic Web Data Management Using Vertical Partitioning", authored by D. Abadi, A. Marcus, S. R. Madden, and K. Hollenbach [1]. We revisit the proposed benchmark and examine both the data and query space coverage. The benchmark is extended to cover a larger portion of the query space in a canonical way. Repeatability of the experiments is assessed using the code base obtained from the authors. Inspired by the proposed vertically-partitioned storage solution for RDF data and the performance figures using a column-store, we conduct a complementary analysis of state-of-the-art RDF storage solutions. To this end, we employ MonetDB/SQL, a fully-functional open source column-store, and a well-known -- for its performance -- commercial row-store DBMS. We implement two relational RDF storage solutions -- triple-store and vertically-partitioned -- in both systems. This allows us to expand the scope of [1] with the performance characterization along both dimensions -- triple-store vs. vertically-partitioned and row-store vs. column-store -- individually, before analyzing their combined effects. A detailed report of the experimental test-bed, as well as an in-depth analysis of the parameters involved, clarify the scope of the solution originally presented and position the results in a broader context by covering more systems.

    MonetDB/SQL Meets SkyServer: the Challenges of a Scientific Database (2007)

    Beschreibung: This paper presents our experiences in porting the Sloan Digital Sky Survey(SDSS)/ SkyServer to the state-of- the-art open source database system MonetDB/SQL. SDSS acts as a well-documented benchmark for scientific database management. We have achieved a fully functional prototype for the personal SkyServer, to be downloaded from our site. The lessons learned are 1) the column store approach of MonetDB demonstrates a great potential in the world of scientific databases. However, the application also challenged the functionality of our implementation and revealed that a fully operational SQL environment is needed, e.g. including persistent stored modules; 2) the initial performance is competitive to the reference platform, MS SQL Server 2005, and 3) the analysis of SDSS query traces hints at several techniques to boost performance by utilizing repetitive behavior and zoom-in/zoom-out access patterns, that are currently not captured by the system.

    Beschreibung: Dieser Artikel diskutiert den Charakter von Pollentypen. Wir argumentieren, dass Pollentypen und Pflanzentaxa komplett unterschiedliche Entitäten (morphologische bzw. taxonomische) sind, und deswegen unterschiedlich behandelt und dargestellt werden sollten. Allgemeine Probleme der konventionellen Nomenklatur von Pollentypen werden anhand von Beispielen aus der europäischen palynologischen Praxis illustriert. Wir plädieren für Deutlichkeit in der Nomenklatur von Pollentypen und für die wissenschaftliche Freiheit, ‘unkonventionelle‘ Methoden zu benutzen, um Verwirrung zu vermeiden.
