Wie gelang es der SED, dieses Tabuisierungsgebot durchzusetzen, und wie reagierten die Vertriebenen selbst auf diesen Akt willkürlicher Geschichtsentsorgung? Wie gestalteten sich die bilateralen Beziehungen der DDR zu ihren östlichen Nachbarstaaten, aus denen die Vertriebenen stammten? Standen sie tatsächlich im Zeichen internationaler sozialistischer Solidarität oder herrschten auch hier - wie im Westen - verstockte Ressentiments? Wie gestalteten sich schließlich die besonderen deutsch-deutschen Beziehungen auf landsmannschaftlicher Ebene? Bargen sie wirklich so großes Konfliktpotential, wie die SED befürchtete, und was vermochte die Staatssicherheit auszurichten, die auch hier zum Einsatz kam?     Description: Nell’ambito di un più generale interesse alle politiche di riforma nell’impero romano, questo volume raccoglie gli atti di un incontro di studio dedicato alla diversa reazione delle due Partes dell’impero alla crisi e ai gravi problemi che investirono il mondo romano nel periodo dalla morte di Teodosio (395) al regno di Anastasio (491-518). Obiettivo dell’incontro è stato quello di concentrare l’attenzione sulle diverse scelte di governo, sulle linee di riforma adottate per consolidare le istituzioni e fronteggiare le emergenze. Si è pensato, in particolare, di privilegiare la prospettiva dell’Oriente, allo scopo di indagare e approfondire le scelte politiche che, attuandosi in un contesto sicuramente più solido rispetto all’Occidente, consentirono a questa parte dell’impero di sopravvivere. Grande importanza riveste in questa indagine anche lo studio delle personalità, degli uomini, e dei gruppi di potere, che hanno pensato e realizzato le riforme. I contributi raccolti nel volume non hanno la pretesa di raggiungere una conoscenza esaustiva rispetto ai numerosi problemi sollevati; si propongono, al contrario, di stimolare la discussione, favorendo nuove prospettive di ricerca sulla capacità della Pars Orientis di reagire con successo alla grande crisi del V secolo.

    Description: Between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD Rome underwent a process of transformation which profoundly marked the urban, social, and religious structure of the city. Examing the memory of saints, this study inspects a central field in which this structural change took place. The main themes are, on the one hand, the connection between memoria and various group identities, and, on the other, the specific Christian concept of remembrance, which inturn formed an important prerequisite for the change from a city of late Classical Antiquity to an early medieval city.

    Description: After 1945, new methods and tools for forecasting the future grew out of the dynamic developments that were taking place in science and technology. Conceptions of futures research or futures studies as approaches to forecasting, planning and envisaging the future grew out of transnational circulations of knowledge in the 1950s and 1960s. The futures field was epitomized by the perception of many possible futures to be forecast and shaped. However, during the 1970s, the limits of envisioning the future became increasingly evident. This book as the first comprehensive study on the topic focuses on the futures field in Western industrialized countries – particularly the USA and West Germany – but also takes the socialist states and global networks into its ambit.

    Description: Der Straßburger Jakobinerclub wurde im Januar 1790 gegründet und im September 1795 per Konventsdekret aufgelöst. Trotz seiner Lage an der Peripherie Frankreichs beschritt auch er den tragischen Weg, der Frankreich von der Revolution für Freiheit und Menschenrechte in die blutige Diktatur führte. Unter den spezifischen kulturellen Bedingungen des Elsaß - geprägt durch Grenzlage, Bikonfessionalität und Bilingualismus - hatte der revolutionäre Prozess dort allerdings ein ganz eigenes Gesicht. Während die enthusiastische Anfangszeit von kultureller Toleranz und Kosmopolitismus geprägt war, bildete sich nach und nach eine auf Einheitlichkeit ausgerichtete Ideologie, die mit Xenophobie, Religions- und in Ansätzen auch Sprachterror einherging. François Furet hat die Genese der Terreur durch verhängnisvolle ideologische Kontinuitäten von 1789 bis 1794 erklärt. Das vorliegende Buch greift diese These kritisch auf und zeigt zum einen, dass es neben Kontinuitäten auch nicht zu vernachlässigende Wandlungsprozesse in der revolutionären Ideologie gab, zum anderen, dass die Triebkräfte derselben in lokalen politischen und soziokulturellen Konflikten zu suchen sind.

Der zeitliche Rahmen der behandelten Themen reicht von den Heiligen Kriegen des antiken Judentums bis zum Weltanschauungskrieg Hitlers, den dieser im Namen der Vorsehung und des Allmächtigen führen wollte. Bemerkenswert bleibt, dass auch der moderne, um das Seelenheil seiner Untertanen entlastete Staat, wenn es um Krieg und Frieden ging, auf die sinn- und legitimationsstiftende Macht religiöser Deutungen nicht verzichten wollte.

Von zukunftsweisender Bedeutung ist darin die mathematische Proportionslehre und die damit verbundene Quantifizierung von naturphilosophischen Qualitäten nach den Methoden der Oxforder Kalkulatoren wie zum Beispiel die Quantifizierung der Geschwindigkeit einer Bewegung. Aus dem Inhalt und der Strukturierung des Werks sowie dem Leben von Alvarus Thomas lassen sich die Zusammenhänge zwischen Formen und Inhalten der Wissensvermittlung und Wissensproduktion, zwischen wissenschaftlicher Forschung und wissenschaftlicher Sozialisation für das frühe 16. Jahrhundert erhellen. Dieser erste Band zu Alvarus Thomas und seinem Liber de triplici motu bietet zudem einen strukturierten Abriss des Werks, einen Glossar zum mathematischen und naturphilosophischen Vokabular sowie weiteres bibliographisches Material. Die Edition Open Sources (EOS) setzt ein neues Paradigma im Verlagswesen im Hinblick auf wissenschaftliche Publikationen von Quellen um. Die herausgegebenen Werke sind in unterschiedlichen Formaten online frei zugänglich, und auch in gedruckter Form erhältlich. Der Diplomat war mit allen Fragen der internationalen Politik der Zwischenkriegszeit konfrontiert: Sollten Deutschland die Reparationen erlassen und eine Aufrüstung erlaubt werden? Wie sollte auf Reichskanzler Hitler reagiert werden? Sollte mit ihm die Zusammenarbeit oder die Auseinandersetzung gesucht werden? Sollten seine Vertragsbrüche mit politischen und/oder wirtschaftlichen Sanktionen beantwortet oder gar zu einer Intervention geschritten werden? Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt die unterschiedlichen Antworten, die André François-Poncet auf diese Fragen gab. Sie waren keineswegs so eindeutig wie der Botschafter nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg und auch die bisherige Forschung glauben machen wollten. André François-Poncet schwankte bis zu seinem Rücktritt nach der Konferenz von München zwischen Kooperation und Konfrontation mit Deutschland. Wann er warum wofür plädierte, zeigt die Studie, die die erste Lebenshälfte des legendären Botschafters aus dem Dunkel der Geschichte holt.

By looking at quotes from the Aeneid, it examines the narrative strategies employed by Jerome to process the tension-filled relationship between classical antiquity and Christianity.
    Description: In seinen rhetorisch äußerst versierten Briefen thematisiert der Kirchenlehrer Hieronymus eine tiefe innere Zerrissenheit zwischen Vergil und den Evangelien, zwischen Cicero und den Aposteln. Der vorliegende Band spürt diesen kulturellen Transformationsprozessen anhand der Intertextualitätsstrategie des Hieronymus nach. Das Erkenntnisinteresse ist dabei zweigeteilt in einen methodischen und einen inhaltlichen Teil. Einerseits werden digitale Verfahren der Zitatanalyse (weiter)entwickelt und evaluiert. Mit den computergestützten Verfahren wird der Bestand an Zitaten am Beispiel der Aeneis um mehr als ein Drittel deutlich erweitert und dabei zugleich das theoretische Zitatkonzept maßgeblich geschärft. Andererseits wird mit hermeneutischen Verfahren eine Zitattypologie erstellt, mittels derer nicht nur die ‚Grenze‘ der Textinterpretation aufgezeigt, sondern auch ein differenzierteres Bild der Zitiertechnik des Hieronymus gezeichnet wird. Die Arbeit legt eine sprachlich-stilistische Hybridisierung offen, die eine modifizierte und vertiefte Einsicht in die tatsächlichen, untergründigen Anverwandlungen des klassisch-heidnischen Literaturerbes durch den frühchristlichen Autor ermöglicht.

For a long time, the role of a government spokesman was attributed to him and his claim that he praised the emperor as a philosopher was considered pure rhetoric. Based on the premise of the acceptance model, this work primarily examines the question of how Themistios' great success can be explained, given that he was the main speaker for four successive emperors. The textual examination of the speeches shows that Themistios, as a non-Christian philosopher, differs greatly from the Neoplatonic philosophers of his time and that they in particular denied Themistios the right to speak as a philosopher. One result of the study is that the group of non-Christian philosophers was less homogeneous than previously assumed, and that Themistios was closer to Christian ideas of domination than previously assumed. It turns out that Themistios' idea of a good ruler cannot be reconciled with that of the Neoplatonists and yet it was very popular with the majority of the elites. Themistios can therefore be regarded as one of the first political philosophers.

    Description: Besatzung, Bürgerkrieg und Revolution sind Ereignisse, die Gesellschaften besonders nachhaltig mental, politisch und sozial spalten. Dementsprechend schwierig ist auch ihre Verarbeitung. Aus der Fülle der relevanten Aspekte wird hier jener des Vergangenheitsdiskurses untersucht: Gilt das antike Gebot des Verschweigens und Vergebens oder wurde von der Vergangenheit gesprochen? Gibt es dabei bezeichnende Unterschiede zwischen unterschiedlichen Gruppen der Gesellschaft? Inwiefern trägt die Art dieser Auseinandersetzung, also die spezifische Erinnerungskultur, zur inneren Aussöhnung oder aber zur andauernden Spaltung der Gesellschaft bei? Schließlich wird die kurzfristige Vergegenwärtigung des Vergangenen von jener mit größerem historischen Abstand zu den Ereignissen unterschieden und damit die Beharrung oder der Wandel unterschiedlicher Erinnerungskulturen analysiert. Die Fallbeispiele stammen aus verschiedenen historischen Epochen vom ausgehenden 15. Jahrhundert bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts; sie berücksichtigen neben West- und Mitteleuropa auch den östlichen Teil des Kontinents und verdeutlichen damit die räumlich-zeitlich-kulturelle Kontextabhängigkeit von Vergangenheitsdiskursen. Dabei erweist sich, dass Vergeben und Vergessen spätestens seit 1789 nicht mehr funktionieren: In modernen pluralistischeren Gesellschaften lässt sich Erinnerung allenfalls noch vorübergehend steuern. Letztlich bleibt die ebenso schwierige wie belastende und nie gänzlich befriedigende Gratwanderung zwischen notwendigem Erinnern und legitimem Vergessen unvermeidlich.
