Description: The volume describes experiences of the first twelve years of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence in its new location. We talk about management contexts, organisational structures, analysis, projects, crises and solutions affecting most of the services. Moreover, we also present an approach and a working method. Our need to write stemmed from the impression of having accomplished a phase of our work and of being called to take stock of the situation, giving account of the work done and critically analysing it, in order to be ready to face the new challenges that the future would present, starting from today.

Description: Thanks to this fourth volume belonging to a series which well represents the Department of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Florence, it has been possible to restore a continuity, albeit with long intervals, which the editorial staff intends to consolidate by involving the entire Department’s “community” (while maintaining the importance of the students’ 'space'). The essays included in the volume, coming from every diachronic curriculum in the Department (pre-protohistoric, oriental, classical, medieval), bring out some trends, among which are the growth of interest in Islamic archaeology (an unexplained countertrend, nowadays), the full transversality of public archaeology or the confirmed articulation of the themes characterising the classical sector since its foundation. Furthermore, the variety of the students' backgrounds is validated, both as basic training and as an academic matrix, confirming the Department’s good response to current needs and expectations.

Description: This volume offers a representative and updated selection of the themes and proposals presented during the first congress of Public Archaeology in Italy, held in Florence in 2012. Public Archaeology is one of the most dynamic and innovative sectors of the contemporary humanistic and social research, and it has progressively established itself internationally as a scientific and cultural movement for the positive innovation of the relationship between research on the past and 'new' social needs. The 2012 congress in Florence contributed to defining the priorities and methodologies of this sector, which nowadays is rapidly expanding in Italy and which over the last decade has earned a place in university courses, scientific journals and advanced design experiments.

Description: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome’s pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14).

Description: This publication concerns the history of the Tuscan Capuchin convents since their foundation in the 18th century, analysed through the transcription and critical edition of a manuscript written in 1704 by Filippo Bernardi da Firenze (1649-1721). It is a source of great interest both for considering the events happening in the convents, and more generally for the history of Tuscany itself. In fact, the manuscript collects numerous transcribed documents - dating from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century - whose originals are now partially lost. Through these testimonies it is possible to retrace the events of the Tuscan communities and obtain numerous information of a social, anthropological and cultural nature. The manuscript is preceded by a historical introduction to the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin and by the biography of Filippo da Firenze.

Description: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities.

Description: Researches in Cypriote History and Archaeology collects the Proceedings of an international meeting held in Florence in April 2009. The title and the contributions disclose how the original planning of a workshop in Florence evolved in time. A report of the University of Florence research activity in the Kouris river valley has been initially planned; as soon as the idea of the meeting was advertised, it was found appropriate to enlarge the horizon and to include in the discussion further issues on Cypriote History, Archaeology and Philology. It will, thus, be seen that starting from the Kouris Valley a kind of small overview on Bronze and Iron Age Cyprus has been put together. A wide variety of themes and interests raised up during the meeting in Florence, as well as a positive esprit de collaboration which allowed to share new results of interesting researches in progress, open further possibilities of exchanges and lead us to hope for a new meeting dedicated to Cypriote History and Archaeology, to be planned in Tuscany in a next future.

Description: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants.

Description: In the undulating plains of north-eastern Syria is the site of Tell Barri, identified with the city of Kahat. The archaeological sequence which has been brought to light stretches without interruption from the start of the third millennium up to the fourteenth century AD. This report illustrates the results of the twentieth excavation campaign, carried out by the group from the University of Florence and from the "Federico II" University of Naples. In Area G, the excavation of the chapel dating to the third millennium proceeded along with that of the palace of the Mid Assyrian King Adadnirari I; three coeval tombs were discovered, two with lavish furnishings. In Area J, the exploration of the Assyrian palace of Tukulti-Ninurta II was continued. As regards the Parthian phase, investigation has proceeded on the Great Defensive Wall in Area E and of the residential section in Area H. The text, prepared for printing in July 2005, was published following the tragic death of Paolo Emilio Pecorella, which took place on 29 August in Tell Barri in the course of the excavation campaign.
