    Description: EnCana’s CO2 injection EOR project at Weyburn (Saskatchewan, Canada) is the focal point of a multi-faceted research program, sponsored by IEA GHG R&D and numerous international industrial and government partners including the European Community (BGS, BRGM, INGV and GEUS research providers), to find co-optimization of “CO2-EOR Production” and “CO2 -Geological Storage”, addressed to environmental purposes, in the frame of the Kyoto Agreement Policies. The Weyburn oil-pull is recovered from Midale Beds (at the depth of 1300-1500 m). This formation consists of Mississipian shallow marine carbonate-evaporites that can be subdivided into two units: i) the dolomitic “Marly” and ii) the underlying calcitic “Vuggy”, sealed by an anhydrite cap. Presently, around 3 billions mc of supercritical CO2 have been injected into the “Phase A1”injection area that includes around 90 oil producers, 30 water injectors and 30 CO2 injection wells, build up since September 2000. INGV has carried out a geochemical monitoring programme -approximately thrice yearly from pre-injection (“Baseline” trip, August 2000) to September 2004- performing trace element and dissolved gas analysis along with fluids sampling surveys, the latter being performed by the Canadian partners. The experimental data are the base of a geochemical modelling, i.e. the main goal of the present study. In the past, assumptions and gap-acceptance have been made in the literature in the frame of the geochemical modelling of CO2 geological storage, in order to reconstruct the reservoir conditions (pressure, pH and boundary conditions). As these parameters of deep fluids cannot be measured in-situ, all this information must be computed by a a posteriori procedure involving the analytical data. In this work we proposed an approach to geochemical modeling in order to:: i) reconstruct the in-situ reservoir chemical composition (including pH) and ii) evaluate the boundary conditions (e.g. pCO2, pH2S), necessary to implement the reaction path modelling. This is the starting point to assess the geochemical impact of CO2 into the oil reservoir and, as main target, to quantify water-gas-rock reactions. Our geochemical modelling procedure is based on the available data such as: a) bulk mineralogy of the Marly and Vuggy zones; b) average gas-cap composition and c) pre-and post-CO2 injection selected water samples from Midale Beds. The PRHEEQC (V2.11) Software Package was used to reconstruct the in-situ reservoir composition by calculating the chemical equilibrium among the various phases at reservoir temperature (60°C) and pressure (150 bars) conditions by suitable thermodynamic corrections to code database. Then, we identified possible compositions of the initially reservoir liquid phases, always taking into account the case histories of the Marly and Vuggy units. The inverse modelling simulation (IMS) was then performed in order to calculate the amounts of mass transfer of liquid, gas and solid phases that accounted for changes in the water chemistry between the 2000 and 2003 data-sets. IMS calculations suggest that the reservoir underwent mineralogical changes, such as precipitation of chalcedony, gypsum and kaolinite and dissolution of anhydrite and k-feldspar. Calcite dissolution is predicted, but the precipitation of others carbonates (dolomite, dawsonite and siderite) can also occur. Finally, we modelled the geochemical impact of CO2 injection on Weyburn reservoir subjected to both local equilibrium and kinetically controlled reactions. All experimental data and thermo-kinetic modeling of the evolution of the CO2-rich Weyburn brine interacting with host rock minerals performed over 100 years after injection confirm that “solubility trapping” is prevailing in this early stage of CO2 injection. Further and detailed studies on the evolution of the CO2-rich Weyburn brine is one of main aims of this study in the framework of a PhD programme between the INGV of Rome and the Department of Earth Sciences of Florence.

    Description: Mercury is transported globally in the atmosphere mostly in gaseous elemental form (GEM, Hg0 gas), but still few worldwide studies taking into account different and contrasted environmental settings are available in a single publication. This work presents and discusses data from Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Slovenia and Venezuela. We classified the information in four groups: (1) mining districts where this contaminant poses or has posed a risk for human populations and/or ecosystems; (2) cities, where the concentration ofatmospheric mercury could be higher than normal due to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial activities; (3) areas with natural emissions from volcanoes; and (4) pristine areas where no anthropogenic influence was apparent. All the surveys were performed using portable LUMEX RA-915 series atomic absorption spectrometers. The results for cities fall within a low GEM concentration range that rarely exceeds 30 ng m-3, that is, 6.6 times lower than the restrictive ATSDR threshold (200 ng m-3) for chronic exposure to this pollutant. We also observed this behavior in the former mercury mining districts, where few data were above 200 ng m-3.We noted that high concentrations of GEM are localized phenomena that fade away in short distances. However, this does not imply that they do not pose a risk for those working in close proximity to the source. This is the case of the artisanal gold miners that heat the Au–Hg amalgam to vaporize mercury. In this respect, while GEM can be truly regarded as a hazard, because of possible physical–chemical transformations into other species, it is only under these localized conditions, implying exposure to high GEM concentrations, which it becomes a direct risk for humans.

    Description: We recount here a series of attempts to tag and track whales at sea without catching them. Radio transmitters of 140 Mc were attached to the backs of whales from helicopters. Tracking the tagged whales was attempted by ship and by airplane receiving systems.

    Description: The 23 October to 13 November 1979 Venezuelan radio tagging and tracking experiments on whales (Balaenoptera edeni, Fig. 1) provided essential field tests of the new modifications to the WHOI radio whale tag (see list of tag reports), and the chance to try it on a new species. We found that we could approach and tag these whales from a slow (4 to 6 kt) vessel. Good radio tracking with automatic direction finding equipment was possible within 12 to 20 km, with longer ranges probable. In addition, the radio tags provided new information about the behavior of these whales.

    Description: The vocal sounds of cetaceans are a little known and even less understood feature of the complex adaptation of these animals, whose ancestors lived on the dry land, to an entirely aquatic existence. Even in the clearest surface waters, sight is limited to about a hundred feet or less in daytime, and visibility ranges are mostly negligibly short for fast-swimming animals, so that they are effectively partly or wholly blinded. Therefore sound and hearing have an especially important place in their lives. Sound is used not only in direct communication, but also to a large degree in navigation and hunting (echo-location). The excerpts presented here are samples of such sounds made by eighteen species, all obtained by eavesdropping in the open sea (except for the Inia selection, which was made in captivity). These recordings have not been speeded up or slowed down, and so are true in natural frequency and time; there has been no editing or filtering except as noted.

    Description: Animal movement is motivated in part by energetic constraints, where fitness is maximized by minimizing energy consumption. The energetic cost of movement depends on the resistive forces acting on an animal; changes in this force balance can occur naturally or unnaturally. Fishing gear that entangles large whales adds drag, often altering energy balance to the point of terminal emaciation. An analog to this is drag from tags attached to cetaceans for research and monitoring. This thesis quantifies the effects of drag loading from these two scenarios on fine-scale movements, behaviors and energy consumption. I measured drag forces on fishing gear that entangled endangered North Atlantic right whales and combined these measurements with theoretical estimates of drag on whales’ bodies. Entanglement in fishing gear increased drag forces by up to 3 fold. Bio-logging tags deployed on two entangled right whales recorded changes in the diving and fine-scale movement patterns of these whales in response to relative changes in drag and buoyancy from fishing gear and through disentanglement: some swimming patterns were consistently modulated in response. Disentanglement significantly altered dive behavior, and can affect thrust production. Changes in the force balance and swimming behaviors have implications for the survival of chronically entangled whales. I developed two bioenergetics approaches to estimate that chronic, lethal entanglements cost approximately the same amount as the cost of pregnancy and supporting a calf to near-weaning. I then developed a method to estimate drag, energy burden and survival of an entangled whale at detection. This application is essential for disentanglement response and protected species management. Experiments with tagged bottlenose dolphins suggest similar responses to added drag: I determined that instrumented animals slow down to avoid additional energetic costs associated with drag from small bio-logging tags, and incrementally decrease swim speed as drag increases. Metabolic impacts are measurable when speed is constrained. I measured the drag forces on these tags and developed guidelines depending on the relative size of instruments to study-species. Together, these studies quantify the magnitude of added drag in complementary systems, and demonstrate how animals alter their movement to navigate changes in their energy landscape associated with increased drag.

    Description: For closely related sympatric species to coexist, they must differ to some degree in their ecological requirements or niches (e.g., diets) to avoid inter-specific competition. Baleen whales in the Antarctic feed primarily on krill, and the large sympatric pre-whaling community suggests resource partitioning among these species or a non-limiting prey resource. In order to examine ecological differences between sympatric humpback and minke whales around the Western Antarctic Peninsula, we made measurements of the physical environment, observations of whale distribution, and concurrent acoustic measurements of krill aggregations. Mantel’s tests and Classification and regression tree models indicate both similarities and differences in the spatial associations between humpback and minke whales, environmental features, and prey. The data suggest (1) similarities (proximity to shore) and differences (prey abundance versus deep water temperatures) in horizontal spatial distribution patterns, (2) unambiguous vertical resource partitioning with minke whales associating with deeper krill aggregations across a range of spatial scales, and (3) that interference competition between these two species is unlikely. These results add to the paucity of ecological knowledge relating baleen whales and their prey in the Antarctic and should be considered in conservation and management efforts for Southern Ocean cetaceans and ecosystems.

    Description: Baleen and sperm whales, belonging to the Order Cetartiodactyla, are the largest and heaviest existent mammals in the world, collectively known as large whales. Large whales have been subjected to a variety of conservation means, which could be better monitored and managed if physiological and pathophysiological information, such as pathogen infections, could already be gathered from free-swimming animals instead of carcasses. Parasitic diseases are increasingly recognized for their profound influences on individual, population, and even ecosystem health. Furthermore, a number of parasite species have gained importance as opportunistic neozoan infections in the marine environment. Nonetheless, traditional approaches to study parasitic diseases have been impractical for large whales, since there is no current routine method for the capture and handling of these large animals and there is presently no practical method to obtain blood samples remotely from free-ranging whales. Therefore, we here not only intend to review the endo- and ectoparasite fauna of large whales but also to provide new insights in current available methods for gathering parasitological data by using non- or minimally invasive sampling techniques. We focus on methods, which will allow detailed parasitological studies to gain a broader knowledge on parasitoses affecting wild, free-swimming large whale populations.

    Description: Many studies have assessed the strong influence of volcanic activity on the surrounding environment. This is particularly true for strong gas emitters such as Mt. Etna and Stromboli volcanoes. Among volcanic gases, fluorine compounds are potentially very harmful. Fluorine cycling through rainwater in the above volcanic areas was studied analysing more than 400 monthly bulk samples. Data indicate that only approximately 1% of fluorine emission through the plume is deposited on the two volcanic areas by meteoric precipitations. Although measured bulk rainwater fluorine fluxes are comparable to and sometimes higher than in heavily polluted areas, their influence on the surrounding vegetation is limited. Only annual crops, in fact, show some damage that could be an effect of fluorine deposition, indicating that long-living endemic plant species or varieties have developed some kind of resistance.
