Notizen: Abstract The history of eutrophication of the Loosdrecht Lakes system and the differences in trophic state of the compartments of this system are described from a hydrological point of view. Groundwater movement was found to be of paramount importance. This groundwater transport induced a horizontal surface water transport with concomitant biomass from Loosdrecht Lakes to Lake Breukeleveen, which explains partly the more eutrophic situation in the latter lake. The article summarizes several internal WOL-reports (ENGELEN and KAL, 1985; HETTLING, 1985a, b; KUHNEL, 1985; TEUNISSEN, 1985).

Notizen: Abstract As a result of high nutrient loading Lake Veluwe suffered from an almost permanent bloom of the blue-green algaOscillatoria agardhii Gomont. In 1979, the phosphorus loading of the lake was reduced from approx. 3 to 1 g P.m−2.a−1. Moreover, since then the lake has been flushed during winter periods with water low in phosphorus. This measure aimed primarily at interrupting the continuous algal bloom. The results of these measures show a sharp decline of total-phosphorus values from 0.40–0.60 mg P.l−1 (before 1980) to 0.10–0.20 mg P.l−1 (after 1980). Summer values for chlorophylla dropped from 200–400 mg.m−3 to 50–150 mg.m−3. The increase in transparency of the lake water was relatively small, from summer values of 15–25 cm before the implementation of the measures to 25–45 cm afterwards. The disappointing transparency values may be explained by the decreasing chlorophylla and phosphorus content of the algae per unit biovolume. Blue-green algae are gradually loosing ground. In the summer of 1985 green algae and diatoms dominated the phytoplankton for the first time since almost 20 years. To achieve the ultimate water quality objectives (transparency values of more than 100 cm in summer), the phosphorus loading has to be reduced further.

Notizen: Abstract Regulation of phosphorus loading is considered to be the primary method of eutrophication control for many lake systems. It is therefore necessary to have accurate estimates of the forms and bioavailability of all phosphorus sources in order to develop the most cost effective load control measures. Research at Clarkson University, aimed at improving the accuracy of estimates of the form and reactivity of phosphorus loadings to Lake Erie, has revealed a significant difference between the algal-availability of allochthonous and autochthonous particulate phosphorus. This paper presents the results of modifying an existing multi-nutrient phytoplankton model by separating allochthonous phosphorus into three forms: soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) — immediately available for algal uptake; external ultimately-available phosphorus—not immediately available but converted to an available form at a specific rate; an external refractory phosphorus (ERP)—not available while in the water column. Comparisons between the original and modified models showed that the modified phosphorus dynamics proved to be a viable alternative to the concept of invoking an unexplained soluble phosphorus water column loss term, employed in the original model. The work also demonstrates that the distinction is significant for lakes receiving a significant portion of their external phosphorus load in a particulate (not immediately available) form and having a morphometry and hydrology such that this particulate phosphorus remains in the water column for longer than about two weeks.

Notizen: Abstract Features of the Loodsrecht Lakes, with emphasis on the main lake, are discussed with reference to restoration. Characteristics of the present situation are: (1) very low water transparency-Secchi-disc readings around 0.3 m occur in all seasons; (2) relatively small seasonal changes in sestonic matter; (3) important input of resuspended particles into the seston; (4) predominance of filamentous blue-green algae for most of the year; (5) relative scarcity of crustacean zooplankton, while rotifers are abundant; (6) poor development of littoral communities, and absence of benthic producers. The blue-green algae maintain high population density at very low growth rates: rates of loss are low. The zooplankton grazing rate is low due to inefficient filtering, but predation of larger crustaceans by fish may also be important. Studies on epipelon indicated that loss by deposition may be largely compensated by resuspension. Starting in 1984, the external phosphorus loading was markedly reduced. Results for 1984 and 1985 indicate that complementary measures are needed in order to improve water quality. Action should be directed towards increasing the phytoplankton turnover rates. Accelerated specific growth rate can be expected to accompany lower biomass, more successful competition by other algal groups, and enhancement of grazing pressure. Considering the shallowness of the system, promotion of littoral development and return of submerged vegetation may be important in establishing a new equilibrium of the system.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract In this paper a dynamic model is presented to simulate plankton growth in the Loosdrecht Lakes. The present, first step version of the model, contains only one algal super-species and incorporates fairly standard formulations for the effects of light irradiance, the extinction coefficient of the water, temperature and the phosphate levels on algal growth. Grazing by zooplankton and detritus dynamics (non-living particulate organic material) are considered essential parts of the carbon cycle. The total phosphorus concentration is used as a timevariable forcing function, which transforms the problem of predicting future water quality levels into the problem of predicting future total phosphorus levels. This requires a separate estimation procedure. However, both types of estimation should be and can be integrated into one single water quality model. The Loosdrecht Lakes seem P-limited in summer. Re-adjustment of certain constants is necessary to simulate Lake Breukeleveen, which differs from the Loosdrecht Lakes in certain characteristics. It is hypothesized that some form of phosphorus cell-quota dynamics may solve this problem. Furthermore, it is discussed as to what extent the hydrological interactions between the Loosdrecht Lakes and Lake Breukeleveen may have caused the differences observed and how this matter could be evaluated through simulation.

Notizen: Abstract Application of mathematical models in the design and evaluation of lake restoration programmes must include due consideration of three basic concepts of model development; 1) that the model framework is appropriately matched to the intended management use, 2) that selection of the proper degree of model complexity is fundamental to the achievement of model credibility and 3) that field and laboratory studies must be designed and interpreted with the aid of the model to insure development of a comprehensive, integrated tool. These concepts are demonstrated for the case of lake restoration efforts in Green Bay (Lake Michigan, USA). Striking gradients in water quality (transparency, algal standing crop, hypolimnetic oxygen depletion) and trophic state occur along the major axis of the bay in response to phosphorus loaded from the Fox River. A simple model for gross primary production is developed to permit calculation of the relative importance of internal carbon production to the total organic carbon budget of the bay. Primary production varies from high rates over a limited photic depth in the turbid, phosphorus-rich waters of the eutrophic portions of the bay to low rates over an extensive photic depth in the transparent, phosphoruspoor reaches of the oligotrophic regions. Internal production accounts for approximately 90% of the total organic carbon loaded to the system over the summer growing season. Water quality management strategies must address the stimulation of primary production by phosphorus loaded from the Fox River in any attempt to lower the standing crop of nuisance algae, improve water clarity, and reduce rates of hypolimnetic oxygen depletion in Green Bay.

Notizen: Abstract The paper discusses the seasonality of Melosira-plankton in Ladoga and Onega Lakes and its comparison with that in other large northern lakes. The periodicity of Melosira in dimictic temperate lakes is mainly connected with periods of turbulence of the lake water in spring and autumn. The role of Melosira in the primary productivity of great northern lakes is important both for the oligotrophic phase and in the case of eutrophication. In very advanced states of eutrophication the spring crop of Melosira-plankton may be the cause of oxygen depletion in the hypolimnion.

Notizen: Abstract The postglacial sediments of Kortowskie Lake contain well preserved chrysophycean cysts. Forty-six morphotypes were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). Ten new morphotypes of fossil chrysophycean cysts are described. Some of the most abundant taxa show clear trends associated with the increase in lake trophic status. The cyst flora is divided into four groups: eutrophic forms (Cysta globata, C. cortoviensis, C. vermicularis); oligotrophic forms (Cysta curvicollis); cool-water forms (Cysta carinifera, C. crassicollis, C. microspinosa, C. modica and Cysta stellata), and indifferent forms (all other morphotypes which did not show a clear tendency). The percentage abundance of chrysophycean cysts wa related to climate changes, showing a considerable increase during the Subboreal period. Two factors, lake fertility and water level changes affected the abundance of the fossil cyst flora in the sediments of Kortowskie Lake.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract Rocky subtidal communities on the Swedish west coast were monitored over approximately 16 years (1970–1985) by means of stereophotographic recordings, at intervals, of fixed sites. Dominating elements of community structure were studied at the 5- and 10 m depth levels of an outer archipelago locality. Excluding seasonal variations, the basic community structure, largely dominated by the perennial phaeophycean Halidrys siliquosa (L.), remained relatively stable over the first 7–8 years of study, but with an increasing trend in cover of filamentous epiphytic red algae. Later, the structure of the studied communities changed radically. The changes initially involved intense settling of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis L. and reduced cover of red algae. The mussels settled largely on Halidrys plants which eventually broke down almost completely. Later, there was intensive predation on Mytilus by the starfish Asterias rubens Linné. After the elimination of Mytilus, the studied test areas were dominated by filamentous ephemeral red algae for the rest of the study period, but with some regeneration of Halidrys at the 5 m level. The observed changes were thought to be indicative of a major disturbance in the coastal ecosystems off the Swedish west coast during the studied period. This notion is discussed in relation to studies of other components of the ecosystem during the same time period and in relation to possible causes. Among the latter may be mentioned a suspected eutrophication process, long-term temperature anomalies and resulting effects on biological interrelationships such as competition, predation and chemical defense. The observed trends included a shift in dominance from slow-growing perennial algae to fast-growing ephemeral algae. If this shift was a general phenomenon, for which there is some circumstantial evidence, it could have important repercussions on the cycling of nutrients and organic matter in the coastal ecosystem. Possible effects are discussed on hypothetical terms in relation to observed anomalies in phytoplankton blooms and benthic oxygenation.
