    What's the use of land? (a secondary school social studies project) (1976)

    Description: The concept of a student land use survey was discussed with the curriculum development team of the Jefferson County Public Schools in Colorado. In these discussions it soon became apparent that the curriculum potentials included much more than a classroom activity involving mapping the features on the ground in the area of study. A new flood control dam to be located in the area of Denver, Colorado, became the central topic in a program involving a wide variety of curriculum fields, such as mapmaking, local community history, physical geography, mathematics, and environmental studies. Consequently, a prototype of a multidisciplinary unit concept was developed for later incorporation by the Jefferson County curriculum team.

    GEOS 3 altimeter performance (1976)

    Description: GEOS 3 (Geodynamics Experimental Ocean Satellite) is the first satellite launched in the NASA Earth and Ocean Physics Applications Program and is designed to perform both geodetic and oceanographic missions. Aboard GEOS 3 is a radar altimeter for measuring the ocean surface characteristics and the spacecraft to ocean surface distance. Frequency of operation is 13.9 GHz, with two modes of operation - global or long pulse (200 nsec) mode, and intensive or short pulse (12 nsec) pulse mode. The discussion covers spacecraft and instrumentation, mission objectives, spacecraft performance, and altimeter data characteristics. Although the altimeter operation is planned only over water, the checkout of the altimeter system demonstrated that the global mode is capable of operating over land for which the terrain is not too mountainous. Sample altimeter sea surface and waveform measurements are presented.

    The Correlation of Active and Passive Microwave Outputs for the Skylab S-193 Sensor (1976)

    Description: This paper presents the results of the correlation analysis of the Skylab S-193 13.9 GHz Radiometer/Scatterometer data. Computer analysis of the S-193 data shows more than 50 percent of the radiometer and scatterometer data are uncorrelated. The correlation coefficients computed for the data gathered over various ground scenes indicates the desirability of using both active and passive sensors for the determination of various Earth phenomena.

    Simulation of the Effects of Hard Limiting on Image Quality of Synthetic Aperture Radar (1976)

    Description: Starting with a magnetic tape of a scene viewed by the Landsat satellite, the radar return of reflectors whose average intensity matched that of the picture elements in the scene has been simulated. The returns were processed in three ways: normally or with no quantization, with a procedure simulation IF hard limiting, and with a procedure simulating video (baseband) hard limiting. For each type of processing an image for a one, two, and four-look system has been developed. It was found that IF limiting is slightly better than video limiting, while both can be reasonable trade-offs of image quality for reduced data rates when the number of looks is four or less. These conclusions are supported by photographs representing the different processing techniques.
