Description: The uses of test equipment and techniques used in space research and development programs are discussed. Modifications and adaptations to enlarge the scope of usefulness or divert the basic uses to alternate applications are analyzed. The items of equipment which have been of benefit to professional personnel in the enlargement and improvement of quality control capabilities are identified. Items which have been simplified or made more accurate in conducting measurements are described.

Description: A derivation of the equations which govern the deformation of an arbitrarily curved and twisted space beam is presented. These equations differ from those of the classical theory in that (1) extensional effects are included; (2) the strain-displacement relations are derived; and (3) the expressions for the stress resultants are developed from the strain displacement relations. It is shown that the torsional stress resultant obtained by the classical approach is basically incorrect except when the cross-section is circular. The governing equations are given in the form of first-order differential equations. A numerical algorithm is given for obtaining the natural vibration characteristics and example problems are presented.

Description: A sensor system applicable to an automated weather station was developed. The sensor provides automated fire weather data which correlates with manual readings. The equipment and methods are applied as an aid to the surveillance and protection of wildlands from fire damage. The continuous readings provided by the sensor system make it possible to determine the periods of time that the wilderness areas should be closed to the public to minimize the possibilities of fire.

Description: Resolution tests of multiwire proportional counter delay line readout systems are reported. The system is being developed at NASA/JSC for use in a large balloon borne magnet spectrometer. The system is ultimately intended for use in Space Shuttle missions. Tests of two different types of delay line and associated electronics carried out in minimum ionizing particle beams (accelerator and sea level cosmic ray) are reported. Resolution performance is shown to be strongly dependent on type of gas mixture and in the case of inclined events upon the propagation velocity of the delay line. The resolution performance achieved for magic gas chamber filling (100 um at normal incidence) is far superior to any other state of the art technique capable of being applied to large geometry factor systems.

Description: Real-time laser holographic interferometry technique has been applied successfully in the detection of 1mm x 1mm x 0.025mm duct tapes hidden beneath a 150mm x 150mm x 16mm ceramic-epoxy-fiberglass sandwiched structure. The experimental results clearly demonstrate future applicability of this technique in the optical nondestructive detection of debonds and flaws in such composite structures.
