    Description: The shell and internal anatomy of the montacutid bivalve Mysella verrilli is described for the first time. The species is remarkable in that the oesophagus has developed into a suctorial proboscis. This has been accompanied by the loss of the palps. In addition the gonads have been extended from the dorsal part of the body to form two gill-like extensions to which the reduced inner demibranchs attach along the postero–ventral margin. Mysella verrilli broods its young in the mantle cavity to the late veliger stage before releasing them. It is believed that the species is probably a suctorial ectoparasite on a soft-bodied benthic invertebrate.

    Description: Motivated by work on tilted convection (Sheremet, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 506, 2004, p. 217), a set of experiments is presented here using the same set-up of a tilted tank attached to a rotating centrifuge with a 2.5 m arm. Within the tank small, almost neutrally buoyant, spheres are released, and their trajectories are recorded. Thus the forces acting on a sphere can be analysed in the case of misalignment between the buoyancy force and the axis of rotation. The angles of descent characterizing the trajectory are compared with inviscid linear theory developed by Stewartson (Q. J. Math. Appl. Mech., vol. 6, 1953, p. 141), and the agreement is found to be good. The angles should be independent of the density anomaly of the spheres compared to their environment. Using the descent velocity from non-rotating experiments, the density of the spheres is estimated and used to determine the drag acting on them in the rotating experiments. It is found that the drag is up to 50% larger than expected from Stewartson's theory. The agreement is best, not for infinitesimal, but for small Rossby numbers. The results are consistent with observations recorded by Maxworthy (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 40, 1970, p. 453).

    Description: A high-resolution palynological analysis and a detailed palaeomagnetic study of a marine sequence recovered during IODP Expedition Leg 307 in the Porcupine Basin southwest of Ireland provide new insights into the regional depositional history and palaeoenvironmental evolution during Early Neogene times. The Hole 1318B studied was drilled on the upper slope of the continental margin in a water depth of 409 m, upslope from a province of carbonate mounds (the Belgica mound province). The diverse and well-preserved dinoflagellate cyst associations consist typically of deep neritic and oceanic species, mixed with a neritic component transported from the shelf, reflecting the deep depositional setting at the continental margin. The palaeomagnetic record together with the ranges of key dinoflagellate cyst species constrain the age of the studied sequence between 16.7 Ma and 12.01 Ma, that is, between the late Burdigalian and late Serravallian. The distinct unconformity terminating the Miocene sequence correlates to the global sequence boundary Ser4/Tor1 dated at 10.5 Ma, and represents, according to previous extensive seismic studies, a basin-wide erosional event. The overlying sediments are of Middle Pleistocene or younger age. Downslope from IODP Site 1318, carbonate mounds root on the erosional surface. The dinoflagellate cyst associations from the Porcupine Basin distinctly mirror the global cooling phase following the Middle Miocene Climatic Optimum. Cooling phase Mi3, a short-lived glaciation, is particularly well expressed and here dated at 13.6 Ma. The palynomorph record furthermore indicates a reduction of the productivity and an increase of oceanic oligotrophic species after 14 Ma, suggesting a reduction or perhaps even a shutdown of the upwelling.

    Description: SUMMARYThe impact of genotype and of frequency and timing of shearing, on mohair attributes and production of modern Angora goats was studied. Goats in the southern hemisphere grazed pastures between February 2004 and 2006. There were seven shearing treatments by three genetic strains with four or eight replicates of individual goats. Treatments were: three different 6-month shearing intervals and two of 12-month shearing intervals with different months of shearing, a 7-month winter shearing interval and a 3-month shearing interval. Genetic strain was based on sire line: 1·0 South African; 1·0 Texan; and Mixed 0·5 South African and 0·5 Texan. Annual greasy mohair production was 5·08 kg, and average clean fleece production was 4·37 kg. The Angora goats produced an annual clean fleece equivalent to 0·122 of their mean fleece-free live weight which was equal to 0·34 g/kg/day. Measurements were analysed over the period of spring 2004 shearing to spring 2005 shearing, excluding the June–December shearing treatment. Increased frequency of shearing increased fleece growth and affected 13 objective and subjective attributes of mohair that were evaluated including clean washing yield, fibre diameter and fibre diameter variation, incidence of medullated fibres, staple length, fibre curvature, crimp frequency, style, staple definition, staple fibre entanglement and staple tip shape. The direction of these effects were generally favourable and for most attributes the magnitude of the response was linear and commercially important. Each additional shearing resulted in an additional 149 g of clean mohair representing 0·034 of the annual clean mohair production. This increase was associated with a 0·6 cm increase in staple length and 0·32 μm increase in mean fibre diameter. In conclusion, Angora goats shorn less frequently grew less mohair that was more likely to be entangled in spring. Managers of Angora goats should take note of these findings.

    Description: The phase distribution of a bimodal distribution of negatively buoyant particles in a low-Reynolds-number pressure-driven flow of a suspension in a horizontal pipe is measured using multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Suspensions of heavy silver-coated particles and slightly heavy PMMA particles exhibit different effective conductivities depending on the frequency of an applied electrical current. This difference allows the separate imaging of the phase distribution of each particle type and the composite suspension. At low flow rates the dense particles tend to distribute in the lower half of the pipe The particles are resuspended toward the centre as the flow rate is increased. The slightly heavy particles tend to accumulate closer to the centre of the pipe. The presence of the nearly neutrally buoyant particles enhances the resuspension of the heavy particles compared to that of a suspension of heavy particles alone at the same volume fraction. A suspension balance model is used to theoretically predict the distribution of particles in the flow assuming an ideal mixing rule for the particle partial pressures. The agreement between the predictions and the experimental observations is qualitatively correct and quantitatively fair. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.

    Description: The linear instability of a barotropic flow with uniform horizontal shear in a stratified rotating fluid is investigated with respect to perturbations invariant in the alongflow direction. The flow can be inertially unstable if there is sufficiently strong anticyclonic shear, but only for sufficiently high Reynolds numbers Re. We determine the critical Reynolds numbers required for amplification of the instability as a function of Prandtl number, strength of the stratification and magnitude of the shear. The vertical scales at the onset of the instability are calculated. For Prandtl number P 〈 1.44 instability always sets in through stationary overturning motions, for P 〉 1.44 it may also commence through overstable (oscillatory) motions. For Re exceeding the critical value, we determine the vertical scale of the most rapidly amplifying modes and the corresponding growth rates and how they vary with Re, P, the shear and the strength of stratification. © 2008 Cambridge University Press.
