I\xe2\x80\x94XLVII, 1\xe2\x80\x94370, 1 Plate, 1 map and 81 text figures. \xe2\x80\x94 \xc6\x92 7.50.\nThe users both at home and abroad of Dr. BACKER\xe2\x80\x99s florae have always regretted that, however carefully these books have been prepared, most of them were imperfect in one way or another. They were either restricted to certain vegetations (weedflorae for tea and sugar-cane) or did not cover all groups of vascular plants; the \xe2\x80\x9dFlora van Batavia\xe2\x80\x9c (1907), the \xe2\x80\x9dSchoolflora voor Java\xe2\x80\x9c (1911) contain only the Dicotyledoneae-Dialypetalae, the \xe2\x80\x9dHandboek voor de flora van Java\xe2\x80\x9c (1928) contains scattered families of the Ferns and Fern Allies, Gymnosperms and many Monocotyledons. This phenomenon is probably due to the fact that BACKER is a most accurate and painstaking worker, who is inclined to refrain from publication unless he is reasonably sure to be correct; and we all know how difficult it is to reach a mental state of this description. However, BACKER has for some years been engaged in preparing with untiring and admirable energy, a new and complete \xe2\x80\x9dSchoolflora voor Java\xe2\x80\x9c, the manuscript of which is rapidly growing to maturity. When the Pteridophytes were completed as far as the regions up to 3300\xe2\x80\x99 were concerned, Dr. POSTHUMUS suggested a collaboration in order to make a complete flora of vascular cryptogams. This collaboration of our keenest connoisseur of the Java flora and our best pteridologist resulted in the book, which we have the pleasure to announce and recommend here. Together with the new. \xe2\x80\x9dSchoolflora\xe2\x80\x9c to which we may be looking forward soon, it will form the first reliable flora of the vascular plants of Java. Although the Dutch language is probably less unapproachable than the Russian one, with which Soviet botanists try to convince the world that everybody should know Russian (or that it is not necessary that other peoples should know Russian botany?), it is, I think, to be regretted that our mother tongue has been chosen for a book which many foreign botanists, notably in British Malaya and British Borneo, may desire to use. This is the more so, as the book does not only contain keys to the determination and descriptions of the 15 families, 104 genera and 515 species, but also interesting chapters on the distribution (with map), the ecology, the sociology and the use of the plants described. Also the introductory paragraphs (pp. XIII\xe2\x80\x94XXX) contain many valuable and interesting notes on the morphology; the wording of these chapters is probably not easy for those who are only little familiar with our language, as BACKER has a certain predilection for a literary style.

Description: For the incorporation of various grasses in the herbaria of our institutes, we are constantly looking for the correct names to accept, according to the priority. The study of the existing names, as they are given in the Index Kewensis, is therefore indispensable. Working in various genera of the grasses we find, however, that many names are not tenable, because they were accepted without studying the whole literature of the subject. It appeared that, various names are omitted in the Index Kewensis, and indications given in various papers are sometimes neglected.\nThus, the well-known and characteristic Aristida rhiniochloa HOCHST., already described in the year 1855 and treated by me in the Critical Revision (p. 510) and in my Monograph, is not yet given in the Index, although many of my new species are mentioned.

Description: This survey of the scorpions of the Leeward Group is based on author\xe2\x80\x99s collection and therefore includes some mainlandrecords from northern Venezuela and northeastern Colombia. Material from Cura\xc3\xa7ao, deposited in the \xe2\x80\x9cZo\xc3\xb6logisch Museum, Amsterdam\xe2\x80\x9d (A) and the \xe2\x80\x9cRijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden\xe2\x80\x9d (L) has been included, and the few island-records which were found in literature mentioned. Important new localities are indicated by an exclamation-mark.\nA description of the localities may be found in the 1st and the 4th paper of this series.

Description: Na het verschijnen in 1913 van de Beaufort\'s determinatielijst der Java-ratten 1), is er veel nieuws van de Javaansche Muridae bekend geworden. Omvatte genoemde tabel nog sleehts een 10-tal vormen (waarvan nog een \xe2\x80\x94 Mus jerdoni \xe2\x80\x94 als onjuist gedetermineerd moet vervallen, doch waaraan een andere soort \xe2\x80\x94 Mus musculus \xe2\x80\x94 als wel genoemd, doch niet in de tabel opgenomen, moet worden toegevoegd), \xe2\x80\x94 th\xc3\xa0ns zijn er niet minder dan 21 soorten en ondersoorten van Java bekend. Voor de geinteresseerden is zeker een nieuwe tabel, vergezeld van eenigszins uitvoerige beschrijvingen, noodzakelijk. Bovendien werden in het onderstaande eenige korte gegevens over de verspreiding op Java en een paar biologische notities opgenomen.\nAlvorens nu tot dit eigenlijke onderwerp over te gaan, moet hier echter eerst worden ingegaan op een moeilijkheid, die zich voordeed bij het opstellen van de determinatie-tabel. Waar in deze tabel uiteraard meerdere malen moest worden gewerkt met maten als onderscheidingskenmerk, daar is het zonder meer duidelijk, dat deze maten, om werkelijk bruikbaar te zijn, per soort eenigszins vast moeten liggen, d.w.z. slechts mogen varieeren binnen zekere (en nog wel liefst niet al te wijde) grenzen.\nWe komen zoo als vanzelf tot de kwestie van het fixeeren van deze grenzen. Het is over dit punt, dat hieronder eenigszins uitvoerig zal moeten worden gehandeld.\nWe hebben hier dan natuurlijk altijd te maken met een boven- en met een benedengrens. De bovengrens (de maximale grootte, die een bepaalde soort of eenig lichaamsdeel daarvan kan bereiken) is wel op geen andere manier te ontdekken dan door het nameten van een vol-

Description: In preparing the volume of the Gobioidea in M. Weber and L. F. de Beaufort: The Fishes of the Indo-Australian Archipelago, several described species, collected in the Indo-Australian Archipelago or its surroundings, were not clear to me. Of a number of these the description was distinct enough to see what was meant with such a new species, but there were several species which I could not recognize from their description. Bleeker described a large number of new species, but, unfortunately, several of his descriptions are too vague to recognize the species. So many authors had described several species which proved, after comparison with Bleeker\'s type specimens or descriptions made after his types, to be either closely allied, or identical with species already described by Bleeker. In order to see whether the described species of authors were synonyms of already described species, or to reexamine the types in order to enlarge the descriptions, I visited several Museums and other Institutions in the United States of N.\nAmerica, Honolulu, Australia, Philippines, Singapore and British India.\nDuring a stay in Batavia, I had the opportunity to make colour sketches of freshly-caught specimens and to go out and collect specimens myself.\nMy visit to the different countries mentioned was made possible by a grant of the "Pieter Langerhuizen Lambertuszoon fonds", endowed by the "Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen".\nDuring these visits I received great help and friendship of the staff of the Museums and Institutions, for which I am very thankful. Description: Im Vergleich zu der Reptilien-Ausbeute Kopstein\'s (1926, S. 71) sind die von ihm auf den Molukken und einigen benachbarten Eilanden w\xc3\xa4hrend der Jahre 1922/24 zusammengebrachten Amphibien naturgem\xc3\xa4ss wesentlich arten\xc3\xa4rmer. Durch mehrere bemerkenswerte Neunachweise und zwei fiir die Wissenschaft neue Formen verdient aber diese kleine Sammlung, die sich aus 10 Arten zusammensetzt, dennoch ein recht erhebliches Interesse. Ich erhielt das Material, das sich im \'sRijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden befindet, von dem Direktor dieses Museum, Herrn Prof. Dr. E. D. van Oort zur Bearbeitung, dem ich daf\xc3\xbcr auch hier meinen ergebensten Dank zum Ausdruck bringe. Eine ganze Reihe von Exemplaren hat allem Anschein nach schon Herrn Prof. Dr. P. N. van Eampen zur Determination vorgelegen.\nVon tiergeographischem Interesse sind insbesondere die wenigen Froschlurche, die Eopstein auf den, in amphibiologischer Beziehung bisher noch so gut wie unbekannten Soela-Inseln, zwischen Celebes und den Molukken, zusammengebracht hat; nur Eoningsberger (zitiert nach Eopstein 1927, S. 437) erw\xc3\xa4hnt aus diesem Gebiete zwei Frosch-Arten der Gattung Rana, die jedoch nicht naher bestimmt worden sind. Unter dem vorliegenden Material befinden sich nun drei Arten von der Soela-Insel Sanana, darunter eine neue Form der Brevicipitiden-Gattung Hylophorbus. Von diesen drei Arten geh\xc3\xb6ren zwei der \xc3\xb6stlichen (papuanischen) Fauna an, eine der westlichen (celebischen). Dieser Befund ist deswegen bemerkenswert, weil die Reptilien dieser Inseln in der Hauptsache sich aus celebischen Formen zusammensetzen, w\xc3\xa4rend das papuanische Element stark zur\xc3\xbccktritt.\nFerner enth\xc3\xa4lt das Froschmaterial Kopstein\'s von Ambon, einer her-

Description: Sedert 1923 zijn door mij een groot aantal gegevens omtrent de verspreiding van onze geangelde Hymenoptera bijeengebracht.\nHet was mijn bedoeling deze in den loop van den tijd aan te vullen en te verwerken tot eenige nieuwe naamlijsten van die families, waarvan tot nu toe slechts oude en verouderde opgaven bestonden; tot mijn spijt is dit werk door mijn vertrek naar Indi\xc3\xab, in den zomer van 1928, echter niet voltooid kunnen worden en moet ik volstaan met het geven van onvolledige lijsten.\nDoor allerlei omstandigheden is het samenstellen hiervanzeer verlaat; ik hoop echter de Nederlandsche entomologen, die zich voor deze groepen interesseeren (en dat zijn er helaas nog veel te weinig!), toch nog van dienst te kunnen zijn met het publiceeren van mijn aanteekeningen.\nBijna al het materiaal, waarop deze gegevens gebaseerd zijn, berust thans in \'s Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden. Description: Namens den Directeur van het Deli-Proefstation te Medan, Sumatra, werd mij de hieronder volgende beschrijving der ontwikkelingsstadia van Thosea asigna v. E., eene Limacodide, beschreven in de Zool. Meded.\nMus. Leiden XII, p. 113, pl. XII, f. 10, 1929, toegezonden.\nEi: de eieren worden afgezet tegen den onderkant der bladslippen.\nZij zijn bijna zuiver rond met een diameter van 2\xe2\x80\x943 mm en zeer plat.\nDe kleur is geelgroen, waardoor zij slechts weinig tegen het blad afsteken en moeilijk gevonden worden. Het afzetten heeft plaats in rechte rijen, waarin de eieren elkaar juist raken. Vaak liggen meerdere van zulke rijen naast elkaar.
