Notes: A broad study of the 59Co NMR of cobalt(III) porphyrin complexes with axial amine ligands in a variety of solvents is reported. The data are presented in tabular form, as are the numerical correlations of chemical shift, δ, and line width, ω1/2, using the Kamlet-Taft equation. The dependence of δ and ω1/2 on ligand substituents is discussed. Solvent data, including mixed solvent results, indicate that general factors such as acidity, basicity, polarity and hydrogen-bonding capability are important, as are the specific nature of the functional groups on the ligands and the solvent.

Notes: 13C chemical shifts and coupling constants of phosphoserine in aqueous solutions were studied as a function of pH values. Carboxyl and α-amino titration shifts agree with those observed in amino acids. The analysis of the coupling constants indicates that for rotation about the (C)—C—O—(P) axis the trans conformer predominates for all pH values. The fractional population of the gauche conformer reaches a maximum at pH=8.

Notes: The 270 MHz n.m.r. spectra of phosphoserine (PSer) have been measured and completely analysed for seven pD values. The resulting vicinal coupling constants 3J(HαHβ) and 3J(PHβ) are used to discuss the conformations of PSer with respect to the (Hα)—Cα—Cβ—(O) and (Cα)—Cβ—O—(P) bond axes. The all-trans conformer predominates for all pD values, with its fractional population being minimal at pD values close to neutrality. The Cβ—O bond rotamer populations agree reasonably well with those obtained from 13C investigations.

Notes: Abstract. Laser ablation with femtosecond pulses (130 fs, wavelength 800 nm, repetition rate 2 Hz) was compared with nanosecond-pulse ablation (10 ns, wavelength 266 nm, repetition rate 2.5 Hz) of bariumalumoborosilicate glass in air using the direct focusing technique. Different ablation thresholds and heat-affected zones were observed. The lateral and vertical machining precision was evaluated. Single nanosecond laser pulses in the far UV resulted in a bubble or a circular hole in the centre of the illuminated spot, depending on the applied fluence. The ablation behaviour in the case of near-IR femtosecond pulses contrasted to this. Bubble formation was not detected. It needed repeated pulses at the same spot to modify the surface until material removal could be observed (incubation). Cavity dimensions of less than the beam diameter were achieved in this case.

Description / Table of Contents: The fragmentation of metal complexes of tropolones is decisively infleunced by the metal atom. In contrast to the free ligand the elimination of carbon monoxide is greatly reduced. The formation of the metal-free fragments is commented upon, as well as the unusual elimination of water from the Cu derivative.

Notes: Abstract A reinvestigation of the single phase aggregate model (SPAM) of Ward applied to the elastic properties of uniaxially oriented polymers is presented. It is shown that the Voigt and the Reuss orientation average of elastic constants can be represented as a linear transformation in a 5-dimensional vector space. The corresponding transformation matrix can be diagonalized, showing that the eigenvalues of this transformation are the orientation parametersP 0 =1,P 2 andP 4 . Taking advantage of this representation an easy test of applicability of the SPAM is proposed. Possibilities to evaluate the SPAM parameters are reviewed.
