    Description: A brief outline of the Viking 1 mission to Mars is followed by descriptions of the Martian landing site and the scientific instrumentation aboard Viking 1 orbiter and lander. Measurements of the Martian atmosphere provided data on its molecular composition, temperature and pressure. The detection of nitrogen in the Martian atmosphere indicates the existence of life. Panoramic photographs of the Martian surface were also obtained and are shown. Preliminary chemical and biological investigations on samples of Martian soil indicated the presence of the elements iron, calcium, silicon, titanium and aluminum as major constituents. Observed biochemical reactions were judged conducive of biological activity.

    Description: The Space Station Advanced Development Program has the objective to transform promising new techniques into mature proven concepts to enable design options for the initial Space Station. It is pointed out that the options should improve system performance and reduce operational costs. Attention is given to the approach employed in the implementation of the program, the technology issues, aspects of Space Station evolution and growth, a Space Station technology overview, and subsystem technologies. The Advanced Development Power Program is considered along with the advanced development of auxiliary propulsion, the program dealing with attitude control and stabilization, and developments related to data management. Other developments are concerned with communication, system operation, manned systems technology, structures, and environmental control and life support.

    Description: The Advanced Technology Plan of the Fiscal Year (FY) 1986 is designed to focus on the most promising technology options applicable to the Space Station (SS), selected from the list of tasks identified by the FY 1984 Technology Program as the most critical technologies to be developed for the initial SS Initial Operating Capability. Most of the current activities are in the stages of manufacture and life tests of specific SS subsystems. Special attention is given to major technologies, which include power systems (PSs) (with emphasis on a Solar Dynamic PS concept); the thermal control system (with the focus on the 'thermal bus' concept); the environmental control and life support system; and the data management system; all are illustrated schematically. Other tasks, including dynamics, communications, extravehicular activities, mechanics, propulsion, and fluid, as well as the tasks of cost, maintainability, automation and robotics, and productivity are discussed.

    Description: A low cost, Shuttle launched short duration free-flyer, known as Spartan that can accommodate sounding rocket class experiments for up to 40 hr of data collection time was developed. A family of retrievable carriers is under construction to accommodate payloads from X-ray astronomy, solar physics, UV astronomy, and studies of Halley's comet.     Description: The objectives, itinerary and results of the Japanese Investigative Team on U.S. Space Station Design (Keidanren), consisting of members of the Space Development Promotion Council and representatives of Japanese industries involved in Japan's space station development effort are presented. This team visited NASA facilities in February, 1985. The objectives of the study team are to gather information on preliminary design efforts toward space station planning in Japan and the promotion of Japanese space related industries, as well as the evaluation of the present status of space environment exploitation in the U.S. This report is intended to be a basic reference for government agencies and industry in addressing the course of action to be taken in the future development of Japan's space station participation.

    Description: The requirements for future space missions indicate that many of these spacecraft will be large, flexible, and in some applications, require precision geometries. A technology program that addresses the issues associated with the structure/control interactions for these classes of spacecraft is discussed. The goal of the NASA control of flexible structures technology program is to generate a technology data base that will provide the designer with options and approaches to achieve spacecraft performance such as maintaining geometry and/or suppressing undesired spacecraft dynamics. This technology program will define the appropriate combination of analysis, ground testing, and flight testing required to validate the structural/controls analysis and design tools. This work was motivated by a recognition that large minimum weight space structures will be required for many future missions. The tools necessary to support such design included: (1) improved structural analysis; (2) modern control theory; (3) advanced modeling techniques; (4) system identification; and (5) the integration of structures and controls.
