    Description: We consider statistical-mechanics models for spin systems built on hierarchical structures, which provide a simple example of non-mean-field framework. We show that the coupling decay with spin distance can give rise to peculiar features and phase diagrams much richer than their mean-field counterpart. In particular, we consider the Dyson model, mimicking ferromagnetism in lattices, and we prove the existence of a number of metastabilities, beyond the ordered state, which become stable in the thermodynamic limit. Such a feature is retained when the hierarchical structure is coupled with the Hebb rule for learning, hence mimicking the modular architecture of neurons, and gives rise to an associative network able to perform single pattern retrieval as well as multiple-pattern retrieval, depending crucially on the external stimuli and on the rate of interaction decay with distance; however, those emergent multitasking features reduce the network capacity with respect to the mean-field counterpart. The analysis is accomplished through statistical mechanics, Markov chain theory, signal-to-noise ratio technique, and numerical simulations in full consistency. Our results shed light on the biological complexity shown by real networks, and suggest future directions for understanding more realistic models.

    Description: The occurrence of heterogeneous perturbations of fluid mass density and solid elastic strain of a porous continuum, as a consequence of its undrained response is a very important topic in theoretical and applied poromechanics. The classical Mandel-Cryer effect provides an ex- planation of fluid overpressure in the central region of a porous sample, immediately after the application of the loading. However this effect fades away when the fluid leaks out of the porousnetwork.Herethisproblemisstudiedwithintheframeworkofasecondgradientthe- ory and a thorough description of the static and the dynamics of the phenomenon is given. We study how the presence of an impermeable wall affects the formation of the interface between two phases differing in the fluid content. Moreover, we show that the late time in- terface motion towards its stationary position is not affected by the impermeable wall and is characterizedby acommonseepagevelocity profile.

    Description: In this paper we study some cases of time-fractional nonlinear dispersive equations (NDEs) involving Caputo derivatives, by means of the invariant subspace method. This method allows to find exact solutions to nonlinear time-fractional partial differential equations by separating variables. We first consider a third order time-fractional NDE that admits a four-dimensional invariant subspace and we find a similarity solution. We also study a fifth order NDE. In this last case we find a solution involving Mittag-Leffler functions. We finally observe that the invariant subspace method permits to find explicit solutions for a wide class of nonlinear dispersive time-fractional equations.

    Description: Hierarchical networks are attracting a renewal interest for modeling the organization of a number of biological systems and for tackling the complexity of statistical mechanical models beyond mean-field limitations. Here we consider the Dyson hierarchical construction for ferromagnets, neural networks, and spin glasses, recently analyzed from a statistical-mechanics perspective, and we focus on the topological properties of the underlying structures. In particular, we find that such structures are weighted graphs that exhibit a high degree of clustering and of modularity, with a small spectral gap; the robustness of such features with respect to the presence of thermal noise is also studied. These outcomes are then discussed and related to the statistical-mechanics scenario in full consistency. Last, we look at these weighted graphs as Markov chains and we show that in the limit of infinite size, the emergence of ergodicity breakdown for the stochastic process mirrors the emergence of metastabilities in the corresponding statistical mechanical analysis.

    Description: In this paper we study the analytic solutions of Burgers type nonlinear fractional equa- tions by means of the Invariant Subspace Method. We first study a class of nonlinear equations directly related to the time-fractional Burgers equation. Some generalizations linked to the forced time-fractional Burgers equations and variable-coefficient diffusion are also considered. Finally we study a Burgers-type equation involving both space and time-fractional derivatives.

    Description: In this paper, we introduce and investigate the statistical mechanics of hier- archical neural networks. First, we approach these systems à la Mattis, by thinking of the Dyson model as a single-pattern hierarchical neural network. We also discuss the stability of different retrievable states as predicted by the related self-consistencies obtained both from a mean-field bound and from a bound that bypasses the mean-field limitation. The latter is worked out by properly reabsorbing the magnetization fluctuations related to higher levels of the hierarchy into effective fields for the lower levels. Remarkably, mixing Amitʼs ansatz technique for selecting candidate-retrievable states with the interpolation procedure for solving for the free energy of these states, we prove that, due to gauge symmetry, the Dyson model accomplishes both serial and parallel processing. We extend this scenario to multiple stored patterns by implementing the Hebb prescription for learning within the couplings. This results in Hopfield-like networks constrained on a hierarchical topology, for which, by restricting to the low-storage regime where the number of patterns grows at its most logarithmical with the amount of neurons, we prove the existence of the thermodynamic limit for the free energy, and we give an explicit expression of its mean-field bound and of its related improved bound. We studied the resulting self-consistencies for the Mattis magnetizations, which act as order parameters, are studied and the stability of solutions is analyzed to get a picture of the overall retrieval capabilities of the system according to both mean-field and non-mean-field scenarios. Our main finding is that embedding the Hebbian rule on a hierarchical topology allows the network to accomplish both serial and parallel processing. By tuning the level of fast noise affecting it or triggering the decay of the interactions with the distance among neurons, the system may switch from sequential retrieval to multitasking features, and vice versa. However, since these multitasking capabilities are basically due to the vanishing ‘dialogue’ between spins at long distance, this effective penury of links strongly penalizes the networkʼs capacity, with results bounded by low storage.

    Description: A phase transition model for porous media in consolidation is studied. The model is able to describe the phenomenon of fluid-segregation during the consolidation process, i.e., the coexistence of two phases differing from fluid content inside the porous medium under static load. Considering pure Darcy dissipation, the dynamics is described by a Cahn-Hilliard-like system of partial differential equations (PDE). The goal, here, is to study the dynamics of the formation of stationary fluid-rich bubbles. The evolution of the strain and fluid density profiles of the porous medium is analyzed in two physical situation: fluid free to flow through the boundaries of the medium and fluid flow prevented at one of the two boundaries. Morover, an analytic result on the position of the interface between the two phases is provided.

    Description: WeconsidertheMaki–Thompsonmodelforthestochasticpropagationofarumour within a population. In this model the population is made up of “spreaders”, “ignorants” and “stiflers”; any spreader attempts to pass the rumour to the other individuals via pair-wise interactions and in case the other individual is an ignorant, it becomes a spreader, while in the other two cases the initiating spreader turns into a stifler. In a finite population the process will eventually reach an equilibrium situation where individuals are either stiflers or ignorants. We extend the original hypothesis of homogenously mixed population by allowing for a small-world network embedding the model, in such a way that interactions occur only between nearest-neighbours. This structure is realized starting from a k-regular ring and by inserting, in the average, c additional links in such a way that k and c are tuneable parameters for the population architecture. We prove that this system exhibits a transition between regimes of localization (where the final number of stiflers is at most logarithmic in the population size) and propagation (where the final number of stiflers grows algebraically with the population size) at a finite value of the network parameter c. A quantitative estimate for the critical value of c is obtained via extensive numerical simulations.
