Description: Reservoirs are artificial ecosystems, built in the last few decades to serve various purposes, including aquaculture in net-cages. In reservoirs some studies are conducing with focus in colonization and succession of periphytic community, a complex community either firmly or lose attached in submersed substrata. In net-cages, there isn't any study to comprehend the structure and dynamic of periphytic community. The aim of this study was (a) to characterize the community of periphytic algae in net-cages for the cultivation of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) using three attributes of the community: richness, species composition and abundance; (b) to outline a sucessional model for this ecosystem and (c) provide a basis for further research. For this, slides of PET plastic were fixed in net-cages installed and utilized like artificial substratum. Qualitative analysis of the periphytic community revealed 168 taxa, distributed over 8 taxonomic classes. The class with the greatest number of species concentrated in the Zygnemaphyceae, with 35%, followed by Cyanophyceae (24%), Bacillariophyceae (21%) and Chlorophyceae (15%). Quantitative analysis of the periphytic algae community revealed six taxonomic classes, with a concentration of Bacillariophyceae. followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. In the initial phase of the sucessional process, unicellular algae predominated - principally diatoms - followed by filamentary forms. As complexity of the periphytic matrix increased, the filamentary algae fostered the development of unicellular epiphytes and weakly attached forms. This sucessional sequence was consistent with studies conducted in temperate zones. This study show that succession in periphytic algae communities was influenced by autogenic factors, as the variation observed in abiotic and climatological factors was very small. And is an important step for the valuation of communities in net-cages. This community can be considered a food source for stock fish, lowering feed costs, with benefits for both the producer and the environment. For this, however, further studies are necessary to test substrata and species adapted to using the periphytic community as a food resource.

Description: A growing body of literature has demonstrated significant biodiversity losses for many taxa when forest is converted to oil palm. However, no studies have directly investigated changes to biodiversity throughout the oil palm life cycle, in which oil palm matures for 25-30 years before replanting. This process leads to major changes in the oil palm landscape that likely influence species assemblages and ecosystem function. We compare frog assemblages between mature (21-27 year old) and recently replanted (1-2 year old) oil palm in Sumatra, Indonesia. Across eighteen 2.25-ha oil palm plots, we found 719 frogs from 14 species. Frog richness was 31 percent lower in replanted oil palm (9 species) than mature oil palm (13 species). Total frog abundance was 47 percent lower in replanted oil palm, and frog assemblage composition differed significantly between the two ages of oil palm. The majority of frog species were disturbance- tolerant, although we encountered four forest-associated frog species within mature oil palm despite a distance of 28 km between our study sites and the nearest extensive tract of forest. Although it is clear that protection of forest is of paramount importance for the conservation of tropical fauna, our results indicate that management decisions within tropical agricultural landscapes also have a profound impact on biodiversity. Practices such as staggered replanting or variable retention of mature oil palm patches could help maintain frog diversity in the oil palm landscape.

Description: The aim of this study was to understand how the group of lianas influences the structure and composition of the tree community in a fragment of semideciduous forest. We sought to understand how this influence is reflected in certain environmental variables. In 25 parcels made in the Caiuá Ecological Station, located in Diamond North-PR, measures of individual trees in three categories perimeter were collected. We recorded the number of individuals of lianas in subplots whose data matrices made up of plenty and then dominance curves for each stratum of trees and lianas. To quantify the levels of agreement and determine which variables are most closely correlated with the distribution of vegetation, Procrustes analysis performed on the scores of a principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) applied to the matrices of abundance was used. Metrodorea nigra was the dominant specie in stratum 1 , 2 and 3 . The variable that had the highest correlation was moisture in the soil for the strata 1 and 3. The protest among strata and lianas gave mean for stratum 3. Thus, the community of lianas interfere with the tree community structure, showing the importance of including the plant group lianas to regeneration studies of plant community.
