Notizen: Abstract A patch antenna suited for indoor HIPERLAN is presented. The antenna operates in T M 02 mode and its radiation pattern is omnidirectional in azimuth and has a null in the normal direction. An experimental prototype has been designed and tested. A 6.1% bandwidth of VSWR≤2 and 4.2 dB antenna gain were measured at 5 GHz band.

Notizen: Abstract HIPERLAN is a new standard for nomadic computer equipment being developed by ETSI. The practicalities of licensing of such computer networks make it unlikely that there will be an individual licensing scheme. Nomadic equipment cannot be restricted to certain regions or countries. There are clear indications that it will play an increasingly large role in communications. The best solution to the issue of nomadic equipment and its future development would appear to be an international effort at spectrum planning and frequency allocation.

Notizen: Abstract The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has recently defined a European standard for High Performance Radio LANs. This standard, known as HIPERLAN, has dedicated spectrum in both the 5 GHz and 17 GHz frequency bands. The system has been designed as an indoor wired-line replacement offering raw data rates in excess of 20 Mb/s. In this paper, simulated propagation data at 5.2 GHz and 17 GHz has been generated for a typical HIPERLAN environment. The analysis was performed using an indoor three dimensional ‘ray-tracing’ algorithm developed for site specific single floor environments. The model is capable of predicting narrowband (power) and wideband (time dispersion) characteristics even in non-line-of-sight locations. Using this propagation information, the design of a suitable equaliser and the expected coverage of a HIPERLAN node is investigated for a particular indoor location. Emphasis has been placed on the need to develop low cost and robust receiver designs that are compatible with the design goal of a small and low power terminal.

Notizen: Abstract The throughput of the Elimination Yield Non-pre-emptive Priority Multiple Access (EY-NPMA) protocol, which has been chosen as the medium access control (MAC) protocol for HIPERLAN, is simulated. Connection between users is based on a statistical model of path loss with power law against distance and 6 dB log-normal shadowing. It is shown that the throughput performance of the EY-NPMA protocol in networks of moderate size and with small proportion of hidden nodes is satisfactory. For a fully connected network, the throughput reaches 0.85 at an offered traffic of 1 and remains at this level. The maximum throughput reduces gradually when the number of hidden node pairs in the network is increased. With 11% of hidden nodes in the network the peak throughput falls to 0.6.

Notizen: Abstract Radio LANs are emerging in the computing world. They are supported by distinct configurations: on the one hand radio LANs with base stations and a wired backbone, on the other hand radio LANs implementing Intra-forwarding. Adding a new node in a radio LAN with Intra-forwarding, increases the reliability, while this reliability decreases with ad hoc or hub configurations. This advantage of Intra-forwarding is quantified. Intra-forwarding, as defined in the HIPERLAN standard, is based on a hop-by-hop policy and link check procedures. It is shown how point-to-point packets and broadcast packets are forwarded. The three basic components of Intra-forwarding needed to build and update the Intra-forwarding database are described. The originality of this approach is the use of multipoint relays which enable better scalability. The correctness of the Intra-forwarding protocol is proved and its cost is evaluated.

Notizen: Abstract There is a relatively large selection of results for indoor channel soundings at frequencies around 1 to 2 GHz but relatively few at the HIPERLAN frequencies of 5 and 17 GHz. This work provides some results taken at all three frequencies in order to redress this deficiency and also to compare results at these frequencies. A 20 GHz network analyser was used to perform the soundings. The analyser was capable of performing the Chirp Z transform to convert complex frequency response data to the time domain. Soundings were made in the Agency's office headquarters at Waterloo London and in their investigation facility at Whyteleafe. These two locations provided some diversity of sounding environments involving small offices, meeting rooms and large laboratories. Both buildings were of a 1930's style brick construction with some modern plaster board internal walls. Decay exponents and delay spreads are given for the test frequencies. Results show similar delay spreads at all frequencies.

Notizen: Abstract To achieve a user data rate of 20 Mbit/s in the high performance local area network (HIPERLAN) system operating in indoor environments, channel equalization must be used to mitigate the effects of multipath propagation. If, however, the indoor channel impulse response length is too long, then the multipath power outside of the equalisation capability of the equalizer acts as a form of self interference. Moreover, co-channel interference may also be present at the detector input. Considering these two effects as well as the rms delay spread, this paper derives analytical expressions for the probability of outage.

Notizen: Abstract In order to demonstrate the practicality of high speed radio LANs, such as HIPERLAN, a hardware demonstrator has been built. To overcome the inter-symbol interference caused by the dispersive nature of the indoor radio channel, a decision feedback equaliser has been included in the system. No central synchronisation is provided in a network and a node must be able to derive all synchronisation from a received packet. This paper describes all of the signal processing hardware built for the demonstrator. The demonstrator is not standards compliant but the physical layer parameters are very similar and the signal processing required in HIPERLAN equipment will be very similar to that in the demonstrator.

Notizen: Abstract Timing recovery in the High Performance Radio Local Area Network (HIPERLAN) standard is likely to be performed with the aid of synchronisation sequences embedded in the user data, which will be detected with matched filters. A directed search using a form of genetic algorithm has been performed to obtain suitable sequences of lengths up to 80 bits, and simulations of their performance have been undertaken. Performance of the sequences has been measured under the severe channel conditions that pertain in the indoor environment.
