Description: In order to recognise both taxa previously regarded as varieties of Heliotropium baclei, nowadays classified in Euploca, a new combination is necessary. As the two varieties are clearly separable in terms of morphology and biogeography, we propose to raise these varieties to the species level, for which the new combination Euploca katangensis needs to be created. Moreover, we propose the new combination Euploca madagascariensis for Heliotropium madagascariense, a species from Madagascar considered by some as conspecific with H. baclei, but treated here as distinct. For these three species with beaked fruits, constituting the ‘Euploca baclei complex’, a key and a distribution map, based on revised herbarium specimens, is given. Two additional combinations, Euploca bullockii and Euploca sessilistigma are made to complete the transfer of tropical African Heliotropium species that belong in Euploca.

Description: Within the morphologically diverse pantropical genus Phyllanthus, many subgenera, sections and subsections are recognized. While most taxonomic revisions often focus on local floras, closely related and often resembling species are not always treated in full. Subgenus Macraea is here revised for the first time over its whole distribution, including an identification key and descriptions of its species with distributions, ecology, uses and vernacular names. The currently acknowledged varieties of Phyllanthus distichus are rejected due to inadequate morphological differences. Phyllanthus panayensis is synonymized with P. lancifolius. Phyllanthus alpestris has now become a variety of P. glaucophyllus because of the resemblance in morphology and distribution. The species complex around Phyllanthus virgatus remains taxonomically difficult, but Phyllanthus virgatus var. gardnerianus and Phyllanthus virgatus var. hirtellus are here recognized on the species level as P. gardnerianus, stat nov. and P. tararae, stat & nom. nov. A new species from the Philippines, Phyllanthus ridsdalei, is described

Description: Methane is a very effective greenhouse gas, but the role of the Polar Regions in the methane budget and its sources there is subject to discussion. The sparse surface network data and satellite data indicate significant source regions above the polar oceans. The remotely piloted quadrocopter ALICE was developed for taking air samples to study methane isotopic composition related to different polar atmospheric boundary layer conditions above sea ice and open water (German Research Foundation, DFG, grant No. LA2907/8-1, DA 2907/5-1). Adapted to rough polar conditions the quadrocopter carries twelve 100 ml glass bottles for air sampling and sensors for air temperature, humidity, irradiation and surface temperature up to 1000 m above ground. The samples can be taken by opening the evacuated glass bottles at any point of the trajectory, at predefined positions or manually triggered by the operator. The quadrocopter is a tool to get vertical profiles of air samples easier than with other methods. The initially tested prototype was field operated for the first time during Polarstern cruise PS109 (ARK-XXXI/4) in September/October 2017. A scientific case study was done at rewetted peatland area at Zarnekow (Northeast Germany), by probing the atmosphere above this known methane source during the morning transition at one day in late spring 2018 and at one day in early autumn 2018 (Lampert et al., https://www.atmos-meas-tech-discuss.net/amt-2019-111/) The data set includes 5 flights of the initial operational field testing during the PS109 expedition and two days of surveying a rewetted peatland area at Zarnekow. In the PANGAEA data set, different parameters characterizing the measurement system, the meteorological conditions and the air sampling system are provided: Time of the measurements, coordinates and altitude of the quadrocopter based on global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and barometric pressure, three-dimensional velocity of the quadrocopter, raw data of air temperature and humidity measured by several temperature and humidity sensors, surface temperature, upward and downward solar radiation, and the pressure inside the twelve glass bottles, to control at which altitude the sample was taken. For the Zarnekow data set, the methane isotopic composition of each sample is included, as well as the corresponding sampling altitude. Methane concentration and methane isotopic composition for additional water samples are provided in Lampert et al. (2019).

Description: The University of Hamburg is part of environmental studies in the INDEX Program, which was establishes by the BGR (Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources) in Hanover to explore Massive Sulphides with regard to a potential future deep sea mining. The INDEX license area is located in the oligotrophic subtropical gyre of the South Indian Ocean. The water samples were collected with a CTD water rosette during two ship cruises with R/V Merian in 2016 (MSM 59/2 "INDEX 2016-2"; November−December 2016) and R/V Sonne in 2017 (SO 259 "INDEX 2017"; August−October 2017) and were analysed for nutrients and stable isotopes of nitrate.

Scientific Reports, 8(1), https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-018-30580-w
    Publication Date: 2024-06-25
Description: Dissolved iron (DFe) concentrations in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) of Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems are enhanced as a result of high supply rates from anoxic sediments. However, pronounced variations in DFe concentrations in anoxic coastal waters of the Peruvian OMZ indicate that there are factors in addition to dissolved oxygen concentrations (O2) that control Fe cycling. Our study demonstrates that sediment-derived reduced Fe (Fe(II)) forms the main DFe fraction in the anoxic/euxinic water column off Peru, which is responsible for DFe accumulations of up to 200 nmol L-1. Lowest DFe values were observed in anoxic shelf waters in the presence of nitrate and nitrite. This reflects oxidation of sediment-sourced Fe(II) associated with nitrate/nitrite reduction and subsequent removal as particulate Fe(III) oxyhydroxides. Unexpectedly, the highest DFe levels were observed in waters with elevated concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (up to 4 µmol L-1) and correspondingly depleted nitrate/nitrite concentrations (〈0.18 µmol L-1). Under these conditions, Fe removal was reduced through stabilization of Fe(II) as aqueous iron sulfide (FeSaqu) which comprises complexes (e.g., FeSH+) and clusters (e.g., Fe2S2|4H2O). Sulfidic events on the Peruvian shelf consequently enhance Fe availability, and may increase in frequency in future due to projected expansion and intensification of OMZs.
