    Description: We present fast approximation algorithms for the problem of dividing a given convex geographic region into smaller sub-regions so as to distribute the workloads of a set of vehicles. Our objective is to partition the region in such a fashion as to ensure that vehicles are capable of communicating with one another under limited communication radii. We consider variations of this problem in which sub-regions are constrained to have equal area or be convex, and as a side consequence, our approach yields a factor 1.99 approximation algorithm for the continuous k -centers problem on a convex polygon.

    Description: In this paper we address the Swap-Body Vehicle Routing Problem (SB-VRP), a variant of the truck and trailer routing problem. It was introduced in the VeRoLog Challenge 2014. We develop a solution approach that we coin Relax-and-Repair . It consists in solving a relaxed version of the SB-VRP and deriving a feasible solution by repairing the relaxed one. We embed this approach within a population-based heuristic. During computation we store all feasible routes in order to derive better solutions by solving a set-partitioning problem. In order to take advantages of nowadays multi-core machines, our algorithm is designed as a collaborative parallel population-based heuristic. Experimental results show that our relax-and-repair algorithm is very competitive and point the impact of each phase on the quality of the obtained solutions. The advantage of our approach is that it can be adapted to solve complex industrial routing problems.

    Description: Using a proper distribution function for speech signal or for its representations is of crucial importance in statistical-based speech processing algorithms. Although the most commonly used probability density function (pdf) for speech signals is Gaussian, recent studies have shown the superiority of super-Gaussian pdfs. A large research effort has focused on the investigation of a univariate case of speech signal distribution; however, in this paper, we study the multivariate distributions of speech signal and its representations using the conventional distribution functions, e.g., multivariate Gaussian and multivariate Laplace, and the copula-based multivariate distributions as candidates. The copula-based technique is a powerful method in modeling non-Gaussian multivariate distributions with non-linear inter-dimensional dependency. The level of similarity between the candidate pdfs and the real speech pdf in different domains is evaluated using the energy goodness-of-fit test.In our evaluations, the best-fitted distributions for speech signal vectors with different lengths in various domains are determined. A similar experiment is performed for different classes of English phonemes (fricatives, nasals, stops, vowels, and semivowel/glides). The evaluation results demonstrate that the multivariate distribution of speech signals in different domains is mostly super-Gaussian, except for Mel-frequency cepstral coefficient. Also, the results confirm that the distribution of the different phoneme classes is better statistically modeled by a mixture of Gaussian and Laplace pdfs. The copula-based distributions provide better statistical modeling of vectors representing discrete Fourier transform (DFT) amplitude of speech vectors with a length shorter than 500 ms.

    Description: We compare the rate of convergence for some iteration methods for contractions. We conclude that the coefficients involved in these methods have an important role to play in determining the speed of the convergence. By using Matlab software, we provide numerical examples to illustrate the results. Also, we compare mathematical and computer-calculating insights in the examples to explain the reason of the existence of the old difference between the points of view.MSC: 47H09, 47H10.

    Description: We present a generalization of Minkowski’s classic theorem on the reconstruction of tetrahedra from algebraic data to homogeneously curved spaces. Euclidean notions such as the normal vector to a face are replaced by Levi–Civita holonomies around each of the tetrahedron’s faces. This allows the reconstruction of both spherical and hyperbolic tetrahedra within a unified framework. A new type of hyperbolic simplex is introduced in order for all the sectors encoded in the algebraic data to be covered. Generalizing the phase space of shapes associated to flat tetrahedra leads to group-valued moment maps and quasi-Poisson spaces. These discrete geometries provide a natural arena for considering the quantization of gravity including a cosmological constant. This becomes manifest in light of their relation with the spin-network states of loop quantum gravity. This work therefore provides a bottom-up justification for the emergence of deformed gauge symmetries and quantum groups in covariant loop quantum gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant.

    Description: We develop a noncooperative game theoretic model to examine network performance and stability related implications of allocation mechanisms that endogenously balance equity vis-à-vis equality, and hence, the degree of collusion among the network firms in a decentralized setting. We obtain the structural results and bounds for our model parameters in this regard by focusing on two important factors: (i) synergy between the firms, and (ii) the number of network firms. Our contribution to the existing literature is threefold in showing that: (i) perfect equality among the network firms can be suboptimal, (ii) explicit cooperation among the firms is not always necessary for the efficient network performance, and (iii) the network firms do not completely collude, and yet, network stability can be enhanced. By particularly modeling a two-tier network, we exhibit our results in a decentralized setting and highlight the role of a coordinating agent in enhancing competitiveness of the network firms. We demonstrate that inefficiencies and instability of decentralization can be eliminated by incorporating an additional degree of freedom in the network formation game. Our model and the structural results are applicable to networks such as producers’ cooperatives, cartels, exclusive production facilities, industrial clusters, joint production and research facilities, etc., wherein the conflicts of equity–equality and degree of collusion are predominant.

    Description: Under suitable hypotheses on the continuous delay, distributed delay, and the initial data in this paper, the large-time behavior for the 2D Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations with continuous delay and distributed delay on the Lipschitz domain is studied. The existence of pullback attractors in the non-smooth domain was obtained via verifying some pullback dissipation and asymptotical compactness for the continuous process.

    Description: We prove two strong convergence results of the Ishikawa iteration for a multivalued quasi-nonexpansive mapping in a complete geodesic space with curvature bounded above. Our results improve significantly the recent results of Panyanak (Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2014:1, 2014 ) in the sense that many restrictions in his results are weakened. In particular, we can conclude that the convergence result of the Mann iteration which cannot be deduced from Panyanak’s results.
