    Description: What gave rise to the Norse legal system? When? And where were the meeting places under this system located? These are questions that have long remained unanswered in Norwegian and Northern European history. An overriding theme of the book is establishing when this legal system arose and how it developed over time at the local and regional levels. Central topics include the localization of assembly sites in the landscape and how these sites became important to the consolidation of power structures and, later on, the royal system of governance. The ‘things’ are discussed in relation to successive political and economic structures as well as the influence of conditions within settlements and society. The book also looks at the assembly sites in their various contexts regarding localization and importance in the region, and in connection with the system’s development in Northern Europe. The Landscape of the Law provides extensive insight into the places where law and justice and related legal matters were decided in Viken. This is an aspect of Norway’s territorial division that has not been addressed in prior research. The book is relevant for researchers and history and archeology students working in such areas as legal and religious history, administrative jurisdictions, and state-formation processes, as well as local historians and other readers interested in cultural history.
    Description: Når og hvorfor oppstod det norrøne rettssystemet og hvor var tingstedene lokalisert? Dette er tema som lenge har vært ubesvart i norsk og nord-europeisk historie. I Rettens landskap. Tingsteder og rettskretser i Viken i jernalder og middelalder undersøkes stedene for rettsmøter (tingsteder) og den administrative organisasjonen i det historiske Viken-området: de kystnære og sentrale delene av Sørøst-Norge, fra Telemark i vest til Bohuslän i øst. Dette geografiske området utgjør Borgartingets lovområde i middelalderen. Gjennom arkeologiske funn, onomastiske, topografiske og historiske kilder, diskuteres fremveksten av det juridiske landskapet i et langtidsperspektiv fra jernalder til middelalder, det vil si perioden 100–1600 e.Kr. Et gjennomgående tema er når rettssystemet oppsto og hvordan det utviklet seg over tid, både på lokalt og regionalt nivå. Sentralt står lokaliseringen av tingstedene i landskapet, og hvordan tingstedene inngikk som en viktig del av konsolideringen av maktstrukturer og senere kongelige styringssystem. Tingene drøftes i sammenheng med skiftende politiske og økonomiske strukturer, samt bosetnings- og samfunnsforhold som kan ha påvirket tingsystemet. Boken ser også på tingstedene i deres ulike kontekster med hensyn til lokalisering og betydning i regionen, og i sammenheng med tingsystemets utvikling i Nord-Europa. Rettens landskap gir dyptgående innsikt i steder for lov og rett og tilhørende rettsområder i Viken. Dette er en del av Norges territorielle inndeling som ikke har vært belyst i tidligere forskning. Boken er relevant for forskere og studenter innenfor historie og arkeologi som arbeider med eldre retts- og kirkehistorie, administrative inndelinger og statsdannelsesprosesser, men den er også velegnet for lokalhistorikere og kulturhistorisk interesserte lesere.

    Description: The Stone Age in Southeastern Norway. The Academic Program for Stone Age Research at the Museum of Cultural History comprises a general overview of excavations, carried out between 2000–2017, of 430 sites, graves, depots, hunting pits and other sites, and presents a broad and updated report on the status of research relating to the Stone Age (c. 9500–1700 BC) in the region.Insufficient knowledge has been the impetus for identification of four main areas for concerted prospective effort:• Technology• Settlement and land use• Subsistence and economy• Rituals and their practiceAlso presented in this program for Stone Age research are concrete strategies and initiatives that will contribute to filling in these knowledge gaps, advancing the field, and laying foundations for further research.The Stone Age in Southeastern Norway has been written with researchers, managers of cultural heritage and students in mind, as well as all others interested in a deep dive into our earliest history. This book will be an important reference for planning and carrying out future Stone Age excavations under the museum’s aegis. It will also serve as a foundation for guidelines the museum provides regarding conservation of our oldest cultural heritage.; Steinalderen i Sørøst-Norge. Faglig program for steinalderundersøkelser ved Kulturhistorisk museum inneholder en helhetlig oversikt over utgravinger av 430 boplasser, begravelser, depoter, fangstanlegg m.m. fra år 2000 til 2017, og presenterer en bred og oppdatert redegjørelse for forskningsstatus knyttet til steinalderen (ca. 9500–1700 f.Kr.) i regionen.I presentasjonen av forskningsstatus synliggjøres ikke bare det vi vet per i dag, men også betydelige kunnskapshull. Den manglede kunnskapen har dannet utgangspunkt for formuleringen av fire framtidige satsingsområder:- Teknologi- Bosetning og landskapsbruk- Ressursgrunnlag og økonomi- Ritualer og ritualisert praksisI dette faglige programmet for steinalderundersøkelser presenteres konkrete forslag til strategier og tiltak som vil bidra til å tette disse kunnskapshullene, skape faglig utvikling og danne grunnlag for videre forskning.Steinalderen i Sørøst-Norge er skrevet for forskere, forvaltere, studenter og andre som vil gjøre dypdykk i vår eldste forhistorie.     Description: The Low Countries in the early Middle Ages. Christianity is on the rise, partly due to the efforts of missionaries such as Willibrord and Boniface. Yet the process of Christianisation is laborious. This is well illustrated in Vita Radbodi, a tenth-century Latin biography of bishop Radboud of Utrecht (c. 850-917). In it, Radboud is depicted as a pious, serious and studious young man, who is called to the episcopate after many years of study. As bishop, he encounters problems with unbelieving Frisians and ferocious Normans. Thus, he is forced to move his seat from Utrecht to the safer Deventer. The text offers a positive portrait of Radboud as a holy role model figure. He acts energetically, performs miracles and, of course, also possesses prophetic gifts. For instance, he predicts his own end well in time. The text ends with a vision of the Mother of God and Radboud's death and burial. Some twenty years after the first edition by Peter Nissen and Vincent Hunink, the text is now being reissued on the occasion of Radboud University's centenary.

    Description: Deveta knjiga Historičnega seminarja prinaša sedem razprav, ki se posvečajo zgodovini v najširšem smislu. Dejan Zadravec piše o omembah plemstva v župnijskih matičnih knjigah med Savo, Sotlo in Savinjo do leta 1770. Zgodovino in biografijo združuje prispevek Mojce Horvat o življenju prve mariborske zdravnice Klare Kukovec, zgodovinsko-etnološka študija Daše Koprivec pa izpostavlja uveljavljeno podobo aleksandrinke kot dojilje. Tri raziskave zgodovino povezujejo z umetnostjo – Gašper Cerkovnik se ukvarja s knjižnimi lesorezi Albrechta Dürerja in njegovega kroga, Katarina Šter poskuša pojasniti, kako je zvenela liturgična glasba v srednjeveški kartuziji Žiče, Alexis Bennett pa išče povezavo med filmsko glasbo in pojavom obujanja stare glasbe. Z metodološkega vidika se zgodovine loteva prispevek Miha Seručnika o uporabi sodobnih računalniških orodij pri obdelavi gradiva za zgodovinopisje.

    Description: Enajsta knjiga Historičnega seminarja prinaša sedem razprav domačih in tujih avtorjev, ki so nastale na podlagi predavanj v Historičnem seminarju. Aneta Markuszewska predstavlja dve operni deli z antičnim motivom Ifigenije (Ifigenija v Avlidi in Ifigenija na Tavridi), ki sta nastali leta 1713 za rimsko gledališče Marije Kazimire Sobieske. Mojca Kovačič se v svojem prispevku sprašuje o mejah in svobodi pri ustvarjanju ljudske glasbe. Géza Pálffy piše o obrambi pred Turki in vojaški kartografiji v habsburški monarhiji na področju Madžarske, Hrvaške in Slavonije v 16. stoletju. Prispevek Arna Strohmeyerja se ukvarja z mirovno misijo, na katero je kot vodja cesarskega veleposlaništva k Visoki porti leta 1719 odpotoval plemič iz spodnjega Porenja Damian Hugo von Virmont. Raymond Miller se posveča mestu Jerneja Kopitarja v srednjeevropskem prostoru v začetku 19. stoletja. Andrej Stopar razpravlja o ruskem odnosu do polpretekle zgodovine, predvsem o odnosu do Stalina. Jure Zupan pa piše o pomenski mreži slovenskih glagolov, ki jo sestavlja približno 15.500 slovenskih glagolov, združenih v 1011 pomenskih skupin.

    Description: The volume Historični seminar 14 ('Historical Seminar 14'), issued in the time of transformed reality of what we knew and took for granted, draws attention to the fact that the image we cultivate of ourselves and our history may sometimes be too simplified to be entirely real. At first, the volume both revises already known chapters of Church history and introduces hitherto unknown ones. Simon Malmenvall’s analysis of the characters of the noble martyrs Boris and Gleb, Jovan Vladimir, and Magnus Erlendsson shows how the stories of their martyrdom had a nation-building function. Celeste McNamara’s article on Giovanni Barbarigo introduces the unusual and less well-known topic of seventeenth-century missions. Monika Deželak Trojar analyzes in detail Johann Ludwig Schönleben’s German and Latin Lenten sermons. Aleš Maver’s article discusses why Latin disappeared so quickly from Slovenian churches after the Second Vatican Council. On the other hand, the pre-modern religious practices of nature worshippers in Slovenia are discussed by Cirila Toplak. Modern times and also more political issues are examined by Tomaž Ivešić who focuses on the increase in ethnic tensions in Yugoslavia in the early 1970s, while Aleksandar Takovski traces the historical representation of heroic figures in four former Yugoslav countries.
    Description: Historični seminar 14 prihaja v nenavadnem času, ko se svet spreminja pred našimi očmi. Da bi bolje razumeli sedanjost, je treba (na novo) ovrednotiti tudi preteklost in sedem zanimivih člankov domačih in tujih raziskovalcev, ki so bili najprej predstavljeni v ciklu predavanj Historični seminar na ZRC SAZU, zgodovino prikazuje v novi luči. Simon Malmenvall je analiziral like vladarskih mučencev Borisa in Gleba, Jovana Vladimirja in Magnusa Erlendssona, Celeste McNamara pa je pisala o padovanskem škofu Giovanniju Barbarigu in predstavila misijone v 17. stoletju. Monika Deželak Trojar je analizirala nemške in latinske postne pridige Janeza Ludvika Schönlebna in pokazala kakšen spreten govornik je bil. Aleš Maver je na slikovit način predstavil razloge, zakaj se je latinščina po 2. vatikanskem cerkvenem zboru tako hitro izgubila iz slovenskih cerkva. Cirila Toplak se je posvetila naravovercem, zanimivi marginalni skupnosti na območju zahodne Slovenije, ki izkazuje predkrščanske in predmoderne kulturne prvine. Tomaž Ivešić je pisal o zaostrovanju nacionalnega vprašanja v Jugoslaviji v začetku sedemdesetih let, Aleksander Takovski pa o arhetipskih junakih in zlobnežih v Sloveniji, Hrvaški, Makedoniji in Srbiji.

    Description: The volume Historični seminar 13 ('Historical Seminar 13') offers a selection of articles that have been “filtered” through the cycle of lectures over the past two years. These articles were written by ten researchers from Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, and Germany. Historični seminar 13 continues to examine its origin in the humanities by looking at history and describing the past, with perspectives that are also directed toward other disciplines: geography, comparative literature, ethnomusicology, and cultural anthropology. However, it always maintains a critical distance, which is emphasized in various ways because many of the articles question previous assumptions of past studies and their subjective points of departure. In this manner, this volume makes an important contribution to critical thought about scholarship in general and about the future tasks of the humanities and the social sciences. At the same time, it adds an increasingly current ethical touch to much of its material. Historični seminar 13 is freely available online.
    Description: Historični seminar 13 prinaša izbor devetih razprav, ki jih je prispevalo deset slovenskih, avstrijskih, hrvaških in nemških strokovnjakov. V interdisciplinarnem prepletu humanističnih in družboslovnih ved izstopajo različni pogledi na zgodovino, v motrenje tega, kar je bilo, s pogledi, usmerjenimi tudi v geografijo, komparativistiko, etnomuzikologijo, kulturno antropologijo. A nikakor ne brez kritične distance, ki je v pričujoči monografiji na različne načine še posebej poudarjena, saj številni članki preizprašujejo predpostavke do sedaj že opravljenih raziskav in nujno subjektivna izhodišča, ki posameznike vodijo pri njihovih ugotovitvah (in jih seveda najdemo povsod, le da so v humanističnih vedah morda še bolj na očeh). Na ta način Historični seminar 13 lahko pomembno prispeva h kritični misli o znanosti ter o prihodnjih nalogah humanistike in družboslovja, obenem pa marsikateri vsebini dodaja tudi vse bolj aktualno etično noto. Monografija, ki jo bo v roke z veseljem vzel marsikateri bralec, je prosto dostopna tudi na spletu.
