Économie, droit civil, communication, littérature, musique, théâtre, etc., rien n’échappe à ces esprits curieux et universels. Que veulent-ils ? Une société plus juste, permettant l’accès du plus grand nombre au plus grand bonheur – au plus grand bien être – et pour laquelle ils œuvreront aussi en qualité de hauts fonctionnaires du Milanais. Au-delà des illusions qu’ils ont pu nourrir, les philosophes du « Café » ont participé, par leur réflexion et par leur action, à l’accouchement des démocraties occidentales. Cet ouvrage présente, pour la première fois en France, une large anthologie bilingue de la revue milanaise.

    Description: At the end of the nineteenth century, Europe was haunted by a fear of decline that was sometimes formulated in terms of degeneration. In Great-Britain some thinkers and scientists warned against “racial decline”, morbid heredity and social pathology. By exploring this context, also marked by the revival of Gothic fiction, this book brings into view a few lesser-known works novels and throws light on popular works of fiction, such as Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Island of Doctor Moreau, Dracula and the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Degenerating creatures go back through their personal, family and biological history. Their bodies are uncanny yet recognizable, monstrous yet readable. Some novelists spoke in favour of regeneration, others blurred the boundaries between morbidity and powerfulness, the patient and the doctor, the degenerate and the social reformer, the moral madman and the moral maniac. In creating characters that were so unfit that they must finally die, late-Victorian writers turned degeneration into a creative act.

Les chapitres supprimés et les passages inédits dévoilent un Nemo héroïque, un Fogg criminel, une Aouda mise à nu, Axel grand amant, un Strogoff hautement politique, en un mot le Verne avant le travail éditorial, globalement inique, de Jules Hetzel. Les lecteurs, y compris la critique, ne connaissent qu’un Verne light, censuré, mutilé dans sa chair même. Les Voyages extraordinaires d’origine, qui dormaient depuis un siècle et demi, n’attendant que le plus léger baiser, se révèlent enfin danst oute leur beauté immaculée.

    Description: Who introduced the great American writers to French readers in the interwar years? Who contributed to the circulation of French literature in the United States? The mediators involved in these transatlantic transfers included two lesser-known figures: William and Jenny Bradley. As founders of the first literary agency in France, the Bradleys represented authors such as Clemenceau, Cendrars, Colette, Gide, Malraux, Sartre and Camus, and also Dreiser, Hemingway, Faulkner, Stein, Dos Passos, Chandler, and Baldwin. This study draws on previously unexplored archival material to unveil the fascinating story of this French-American couple and shed new light on literary history, the history of books and the history of publishing, from the 1920s to the immediate post-war years. The narrative offers encounters with the main players in the book industry and delves into the social world of the salons, taking the reader from the Parisian Left Bank to the Riviera, and then on to the shores of America, the destination of transatlantic ships carrying books, letters and travellers.

    Description: Songs play a key role in 19th-century literary thinking: Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Stendhal, Hugo, Musset, Michelet, Flaubert, Rimbaud, Verlaine: every famous French author wrote about them. Expressions of daily life as well as political writings, be it familiar or hard to grasp, songs remain a fascinating yet understudied subject. This is partly due to their commonly acknowledged status as minor artistic productions. Yet, songs were an essential form of expression of both intimate and collective issues. This study, based on a large set of archival documents, focuses on 19th-century “popular” songs, mainly through social and political songs inspired by contemporary events. Apart from the prolific French songwriter Béranger – whose glory has progressively faded into simply a name –, who wrote those songs? Who sang them? What were their goals, forms, and themes? This book’s ambition is threefold. Firstly, it offers a first-ever detailed textual analysis of 19th-century French songs. Secondly, it explains how the now common idea of “popular song” was born in the first half of the century, and how it grew. Finally, this book strives to address a little-known though extremely rich corpus.

    Description: For many years, the North American writer and environmental activist Rick Bass has noted the disappearance of many animal species and their habitats. How can we alert people to the alarming loss of biodiversity and encourage them to change their behavior and practices towards animals? How can we describe the richness and fragility of North American fauna without attracting the curious into spaces threatened by human presence? What role can fiction play in this activist enterprise? Through the study of Rick Bass’ short stories, this book examines how fictional writing plays an essential role in protecting the non-human world and celebrating the ways of being of animals. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, it contributes to ethical, philosophical, and aesthetic debates on the relationship between literature and animals. One of the distinguishing features of Rick Bass’ poetry is the way in which it draws on the structure and substance of fictional writing to make us experience the infinite variety of non-human modes of existence. Playing with rhythmic devices, sounds, and syntax, Bass’ writing can evoke the elusive presence of a deer, the circular movements of swans, or the silent suffering of a wounded mule. Leading us towards other styles, other ways to phrase experience, it directs our own modes of existence towards more ethical behaviours. This book, the first French-language study on the work of Rick Bass, is more broadly aimed at those interested in the representation of animals in literature and the arts.

    Description: La Fontaine affiche nettement sa filiation à l’égard de Marot. Du moins à l’égard d’un Marot. Comme beaucoup d’auteurs de son époque, il voit en effet dans le poète de L’Adolescence clémentine l’efflorescence printanière d’un style proprement français, qui allie au piquant et au brio la naïveté toute vernale d’une écriture. L’auteur des Fables et des Contes admire ainsi le brillant faiseur d’épigrammes. Il y reconnaît « le génie fran­çais », son ingenium, son naturel. Ce naturel s’exprime à la fois dans un esprit gaulois – que Rabelais radicalise trop pour qu’on puisse en faire un allié de marque – et une écriture transparente, non savante, à l’opposé de l’artificieuse et docte poésie de la Pléiade rejetée par le XVIIe siècle comme un accident regrettable dans l’histoire des formes. Cet « élégant badinage », assigné depuis Boileau à Marot, a pu nuire à l’œuvre de ce dernier en en restreignant la portée. La critique moderne a, par contraste, reconnu dans le poète de Cahors un esprit secret, anxieux, au cœur des débats évangéliques du premier XVIe siècle. Le vrai Marot est sûrement à rechercher au carrefour de ces deux interprétations extrêmes ; comme La Fontaine, au demeurant, que l’on ne peut réduire au modèle achevé de l’esthétique galante. La relation qui unit Marot et La Fontaine est bien en tout cas au départ une relation d’ordre formel. Aussi les chercheurs réunis ici ont tous tenté de repenser ou de repréciser les lectures stylistiques de l’un ou l’autre de ces auteurs à travers leur interprétation de L’Adolescence clémentine ou des Amours de Psyché et de Cupidon. La diversité des points de vue adoptés permet d’aider à définir ce qui reste en dernier lieu le plus difficile à caractériser, ce naturel du style, si revêche à l’analyse littéraire.

    Description: Toute entière orientée vers l’interrogation du « problème d’être », l’œuvre poétique et picturale d’Henri Michaux associe étroitement corps et savoir, figuration et mouvement. Multipliant les déplacements, les passages, les trajets, elle emprunte la voie des rythmes pour prendre le malheur de vitesse et faire face à « ce qui se dérobe ». Les études réunies dans ce volume sont le fruit des travaux du groupe « Plume » du centre de recherches sur la création poétique de l’ENS de Fontenay/Saint-Cloud. Elles s’intéressent à Michaux moraliste, à son usage du fragment et de l’aphorisme, aussi bien qu’à ses figurations du corps et du sujet. Elles tentent de préciser les rapports que son œuvre entretient, entre autres, avec celle de Cioran, Dubuffet ou Levinas. Au fil de ces études, une trajectoire se dessine qui vérifie les mots du poète : « la poésie avant d’être œuvre est trajet. »

Ce travail se propose de retracer la genèse d’un texte qui accompagna son auteur durant la plus grande partie de sa vie d’écrivain, de cerner l’essentiel de ses innombrables points d’ancrage dans la culture européenne. Nous nous efforçons également de mener une étude intratextuelle de ce roman-somme où la satire s’unit à la visée philosophique et dont la forme baroque l’inscrit dans l’ensemble des œuvres qui ont marqué le renouvellement de la fiction romanesque au XXe siècle.
