    Beschreibung: While primarily designed for radar studies of the Venus surface, the high effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) from the Magellan spacecraft makes it an ideal transmitter for use in radio occultation measurements of the refractivity and absorptivity of the Venus atmosphere. Such experiments have been conducted involving transmissions at 2.3 GHz and 8.4 GHz (13 cm and 3.6 cm, respectively), during spacecraft ingress. Since the stability of the spacecraft transmitter is critical for accurately determining the Doppler shift and amplitude attenuation created as the ray penetrates the atmosphere, the spacecraft transmitter was locked to a 2.1 GHz uplink from a 70-meter DSN station which also received the signals. Because of the high directivity of the spacecraft antenna, and the significant ray bending in the deep Venus atmosphere, a spacecraft tracking maneuver was designed to keep the spacecraft antenna pointed in the direction of the refracted ray path back to Earth. This tracking maneuver, plus the high EIRP of the Magellan transmitter has yielded 3.6 cm refractivity and absorptivity profiles down to the 35 km altitude and 13 cm profiles down to the altitude of critical refraction (approximately 33 km). The statistical uncertainties in the derived profiles are significantly lower than those previously obtained, resulting in extremely accurate profiles of H2SO4 (g) abundance as discussed in an accompanying paper.

    Beschreibung: A comprehensive study of Magellan Cycles 1 and 2 radar data from Venus reveals surface roughness and dielectric variations associated with fluidized ejecta blanket (FEB) craters that help illuminate styles of flow ejecta emplacement. This study develops new procedures of digital unit mapping and polygon-filling algorithms using Magellan synthetic aperture radar (SAR), altimetry, and radiometry data. These techniques allow the extraction of radiophysical information for FEB crater materials, nearby plains, and lava flows. Backscatter curve slopes of the FEBs studied here are consistent with surface textures that are transitional between a'a and pahoehoe-like. Average surface property values of ejecta units are relatively similar for a given crater, but are discernibly different from other craters. Individual crater ejecta reflectivity and emissivity values are relatively similar to those for the surrounding plains, which may suggest a link between plains material and ejecta dielectric properties. Increasing FEB roughness downflow are interpreted to be associated with more lava-like flows, while decreasing roughness are more similar to trends typical of gravity (pyroclastic-like or debris-like) flows. Most commonly, FEB crater flow materials exhibit transitions from proximal, lava/melt-like flow styles to distal, gravity flow-like styles. Some FEBs show more complicated behavior, however, or appear to be more dominated by dielectric differences downflow, as inferred from correlations between the data sets. Such transitions may result from changes in local topography or from overlapping of flow lobes during FEB emplacement.

    Beschreibung: The temperature structure within the northern auroral region of Jupiter is studied by reanalyzing the Voyager 1/infrared interferometer and radiometer spectrometer (IRIS) spectra. The total measured excess infrared auroral zone emission (averaged over the IRIS field of view) in the hydrocarbon bands between 7 and 13 microns is found to be about 208 ergs/cm/s over an area of about 2 x 10(exp 18) sq cm with a resulting power output of 4 x 10(exp 13) W. In comparison, the total energy deposition by magnetospheric charged particles has been estimated on the basis of UV observations to range between 1 x 10(exp 13) and 4 x 10(exp 13) W over a comparable area. The large amount of radiated energy observed in the infrared may imply an additional heat source in the auroral regions (possibly Joule heating). A new set of thermal profiles of Jupiter's high-latitude upper atmosphere has also been derived. These profiles have a large temperature enhancement in the upper stratosphere and are constrained to reproduce the CH4 emission at 7.7 microns. The emission in the other hydrocarbon bands (C2H2 and C2H6) is found to depend on the depth to which the temperature enhancement extends, which further constrains the thermal profiles. This study shows that a large temperature enhancement in the upper stratosphere and lower thermosphere can explain the observed excess hydrocarbon emission bands; thus smaller variations in hydrocarbon abundances (between the high latitudes and the equatorial and middle latitudes) are required than has been assumed in previous models.

    Beschreibung: Observations of (O I) 6300-A emission near Io have been obtained in 1990, 1991, and 1992 by the National Solar Observatory staff using the solar-stellar spectrography on the McMath-Pierce telescope at Kitt Peak. High-resolution spectra with a resolving power of about 1.2 x 10(exp 5) were obtained with an integration time of 10-15 min each. The viewing aperture for the observations was 5.2 arc sec x 5.2 arc sec centered on Io, with spatial resolution limited within this area by seeing conditions. Observations thus far have been reduced to obtain average brightness values over the aperture which range from approximately 200 to 1000 R for a number of different Io phase angles and Io system III longitudes. The (O I) 6300-A emission brightness exhibits an east-west asymmetry, where the average intensity for Io phase angles in the west (receding ansa) is 1.5 times brighter than in the east (approaching ansa). Similar east-west intensity ratios have also been observed for neutrals near Io and ions in the plasma torus for a number of other optical and ultraviolet emission lines which are excited by electron impact. In addition to the east-west asymmetry, the (O I) 6300-A emission brightness exhibits a strong dependence on the Io system III longitude angle, with a maximum value occurring in the range 200 deg +/- 50 deg. Earlier IUE observations of ultraviolet emission lines of O and S near Io obtained over a number of years have measured the east-west asymmetry, but the long IUE integration times of approximately 7-14 hours masked any detection of system III variability. For the (O I) 6300-A emission, the O(1D) state may be excited by electron impact of atomic oxygen and by electron impact dissociation of SO. The molecule SO may be present at the exobase or may be produced above the exobase as the dominant product of SO2 dissociation by electron impact. Preliminary assessment indicates that production of O(1D) by molecular dissociation may be more important. The (O I) 6300-A emission may therefore provide a remote signature for monitoring (1) the upward transport rates of molecular species in Io's atmosphere, (2) the relative abundance and time-variable dissociation of SO2 and/or SO at the exobase and in the corona of Io, and (3) the spatial distribution of these escaping molecular and atomic species and their ion production rates in the planetary magnetosphere.

    Beschreibung: Multiangle Advanced Solid State Array Spectroradiometer (ASAS) and Portable Apparatus for Rapid Acquisition of Bidirectional Observations of Land and Atmosphere (PARABOLA) visible and near infrared reflectance data covering the Lunar Lake playa, Nevada, were modeled using specular and volume scattering theory. The volume component used to model the data was based on the Hapke (1986) model and the specular scattering component was based on Fresnel reflection from surface facets with a distribution of tilts. Specular scattering was needed to explain the several-fold increase in reflectance observed at high phase angles in the solar principal plane. Results imply single scattering albedos of approximately 0.93 to 0.95, a real index of refraction value of approximately 1.52 (at a wavelength of 0.66 micron), a small imaginary index of refraction and an exponential facet tilt probability function for the playa. Electron micrographs showed th playa surface to consist of ensembles of smooth, micrometer-scale ellipsoidal particles on gently undulating topography at the millimeter to centimeter scale. The exponential probability function is consistent with this observation. Mars and the icy satellites are discussed as possible places to look for a significant specular scattering component.

    Beschreibung: We have measured activities of the long-lived cosmogenic radionuclides Al-26, Be-10, and Cl-36 in 12 fragments of the iron meteorite Canyon Diablo and have constructed production rate-versus-depth profiles of those radionuclides. Profiles determined using differential particle fluxes calculated with the LAHET code system are in good agreement with Al-26, Be-10, and Cl-36 experimental data, but the agreement for Cl-36 was obtained only after neutron-induced cross sections were modified. Profiles calculated with lunar particle fluxes are much lower than experimental Canyon Diablo profiles. The cosmic ray exposure ages of most samples are near 540 m.y.

    Beschreibung: There are two types of glass-rich chondrules in unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (OC): (1) porphyritic chondrules containing 55-85 vol% glass or microcrystalline mesostasis and (2) nonporphyritic chondrules, containing 90-99 vol% glass. These two types are similar in mineralogy and bulk composition to previously described Al-rich chondrules in OC. In addition to Si-, Al- and Na-rich glass or Ca-Al-rich microcrystalline mesostasis, glass-rich chondrules contain dendritic and skeletal crystals of olivine, Al2O3-rich low-Ca pyroxene and fassaite. Some chondrules contain relict grains of forsterite +/- Mg-Al spinel. We suggest that glass-rich chondrules were formed early in nebular history by melting fine-grained precursor materials rich in refractory (Ca, Al, Ti) an moderately volatite (Na, K) components (possibly related to Ca-Al-rich inclusions) admixed with coarse relict forsterite and spinel grains derived from previously disrupted type-I chondrules.

    Beschreibung: A study of enstatite grains separated from EL6 chondrites shows ferrosilite contents to be approx. 0.02-0.04 mol%, about an order of magnitude lower than reported in the literature. The higher values reported earlier can probably be attributed to the excitation of Fe atoms in Fe-Ni and FeS, in part from micrometer-sized blebs of FeS and Fe-Ni commonly present in enstatite grains but mainly from large neighboring opaque grains excited by bremsstrahlung or by doubly backscattered electrons. Our EL6 ferrosilite contents are similar to those observed in coarse enstatite grains in some aubrites. The equilibrium between ferrosilite and Si-bearing kamacite is highly temperature dependent. At constant Si concentration in kamacite, the equilibrium ferrosilite mole fraction drops by a factor of roughly 2.5 for each 100 K decrease in the equilibrium temperature. As a result, the compositions of these two most common EL6 phases can be used to estimate metamorphic equilibration temperatures. The inferred temperatures are near 1200 K.

    Beschreibung: The National Center for Atmospheric Research thermospheric general circulation model for the Venus thermosphere is modified to examine two observed night airglow features, both of which serve as sensitive tracers of the thermospheric circulation. New O2 nightglow data from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) star tracker (O2 Herzberg II at 400-800 nm) and ground-based telescopes (O2 IR at 1.27 microns) yield additional model constraints for estimating Venus winds over 100-130 km. Atomic oxygen, produced by dayside CO2 photolysis peaking near 110 km, and transported to the nightside by the global wind system, is partially destroyed through three-body recombination, yielding the O2 Herzberg II visible nightglow. This emission is very sensitive to horizontal winds at altitudes between 100 and 130 km. Other trace species catalytic reactions also contribute to the production of the very strong nightside infrared (1.27 microns) emission. This paper examines the dynamical and chemical implications of these new data using the Venus thermospheric general circulation model (VTGCM) as an analysis tool. Three-dimensional calculations are presented for both solar maximum and solar medium conditions, corresponding to early PVO (1979-1981) and PVO entry (mid-1992) time periods. Very distinct periods are identified in which zonal winds are alternately weak and strong in the Venus lower thermosphere. VTGCM sensitivity studies are conducted to assess the impacts of potential changes in thermospheric zonal and day-to-night winds, and eddy diffusion on the corresponding nightglow intensities. It appears that cyclostrophic balance extends above 80 km periodically, owing to a reversal of the upper mesosphere latitudinal temperature gradient, and thereby producing strong zonal winds and correspondingly modified O2 nightglow distributions that are observed.

    Beschreibung: ALH84001, originally classified as a diogenite, is a coarse-grained, cataclastic, orthopyroxenite meteorite related to the martian (SNC) meteorites. The orthopyroxene is relatively uniform in composition, with a mean composition of Wo3.3En69.4Fs27.3. Minor phases are euhedral to subhedral chromite and interstitial maskelynite, An31.1Ab63.2Or5.7, with accessory augite, Wo42.2En45.1Fs12.7, apatite, pyrite and carbonates, Cc11.5Mg58.0Sd29.4Rd1.1. The pyroxenes and chromites in ALH84001 are similar in composition to these phases in EETA79001 lithology a megacrysts but are more homogeneous. Maskelynite is similar in composition to feldspars in the nakhlites and Chassigny. Two generations of carbonates are present, early (pre-shock) strongly zoned carbonates and late (post-shock) carbonates. The high Ca content of both types of carbonates indicates that they were formed at moderately high temperature, possibly approximately 700 C. ALH84001 has a slightly LREE-depleted pattern with La 0.67x and Lu 1.85x CI abundances and with a negative Eu anomaly (Eu/Sm 0.56x CI). The uniform pyroxene composition is unusual for martian meteorites, and suggests that ALH84001 cooled more slowly than did the shergottites, nakhlites of Chassigny. The nearly monomineralic composition, coarse-grain size, homogeneous orthopyroxene and chromite compositions, the interstitial maskelynite and apatite, and the REE pattern suggest that ALH84001 is a cumulate orthopyroxenite containing minor trapped, intercumulus material.
