    Description: An atlas of monthly mean outgoing longwave radiation global contour maps and associated spherical harmonic coefficients is presented. The atlas contains 84 months of continuous data from November 1978 to October 1985. The data were derived from the second Earth radiation budget experiment, which was flown on the Nimbus 7 Sun-synchronous satellite in 1978. This data set is a companion set and extension to a similar report of the Nimbus 6 satellite. Together these two reports give a data set covering a 10 year time period and will be very valuable in studying different aspects of our changing climate over monthly, annual, and interannual scales in the time domain and over regional, zonal, and global scales in the spatial domain.

    Description: For several days in January and August 1985, the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite, a component of the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE), was operated in an along-track scanning mode. A survey of radiance measurements taken in this mode is given for five ocean regions: the north and south Atlantic, the Arabian Sea, the western Pacific north of the Equator, and part of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. Each overflight contains information about the clear scene and three cloud categories: partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, and overcast. The data presented include the variation of longwave and shortwave radiance in each scene classification as a function of viewing zenity angle during each overflight of one of the five target regions. Several features of interest in the development of anisotropic models are evident, including the azimuthal dependence of shortwave radiance that is an essential feature of shortwave bidirectional models. The data also demonstrate that the scene classification algorithm employed by the ERBE results in scene classifications that are a function of viewing geometry.

    Description: The First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project Regional Experiment (FIRE) designed to study the roles of clouds, in particular marine stratocumulus and cirrus-cloud systems, in the global climate is discussed. The objectives of FIRE are: (1) to develop a cloud-classification scheme; (2) to validate and improve satellite cloud-retrieval techniques; (3) to improve cloud radiation models; (4) to collect cloud space/time statistics; (5) to improve cloud dynamics models; and (6) to validate and improve GCM cloud parameterizations. The methods used to acquire extended time data and intensive field observations are described. The extended time and intensive field data collected during the FIRE are to be archived in the NASA Pilot Climate Data System at Goddard Space Flight Center.

    Description: The Satellite Precipitation and Cloud Experiment, the Microburst and Severe Thunderstorm, and the FAA Lincoln Laboratories Operational Weather Studies of the COHMEX are described. The precipitation and cloud experiment focuses on the prestorm period in order to observe the physical processes leading to the formation of small convective systems. Aircraft, remote sensing and rewinsonde data are utilized to determine various storm/environment characteristics. Doppler velocity and reflectivity of microburst clouds are studied to evaluate the three-dimensional structure of microbursts from thunderstorms. The weather studies are designed to develop and test automatic algorithms for wind shear detection using Doppler weather radars. The application of satellite systems to data collection for these experiments is discussed.

    Description: Although the two largest rivers in China originate in the same region separated only by the Bayanhar Mountains as a watershed, the Yangtze and Yellow rivers behave in quite different ways. Most of the warm and humid air currents from the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal are blocked by the Bayanhar Mountains. As a result the amount of water in the Yellow River is only 5 percent of that in the Yangtze river. Based on the cloud coverage area and the cloud volumetric distributions, and also the thickness above 9.4 km of the cumulus clouds located north and south of the Bayanhar Mountains from the geosynchronous satellite infrared imagery, the results suggest that a more detailed investigation is warranted in the hope that the proper modification of cumuli north of the Bayanhar Mountains would enhance the rainfall over the fountainhead of the Yellow River.

    Description: The operational data-collection phase of the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) began in July 1983 as an element of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). Since then, raw images from an international network of operational geostationary and polar-orbiting meteorological satellites have been routinely processed to develop a global data set of calibrated radiances and derived cloud parameters for climate research. This report outlines the key steps involved in producing the basic ISCCP reduced-resolution global radiance (B3) data set, describes the main features of the data set, and indicates the principal point of contact for obtaining copies of the data tapes. A future paper will focus on the derived cloud properties and their utilization.

    Description: The effect of downburst-type wind shears on the longitudinal dynamic behavior of an unguided aircraft is simulated numerically on the basis of published meteorological data and the flight characteristics of an A300-B passenger jet. The nonlinear differential equations of the aircraft motion are linearized by conventional methods, and the wind effects are introduced via the linear derivatives of the wind components referred to the wind gradients to obtain simplified technical models of the longitudinal response to all possible types of constant-gradient wind shears during the first 20-60 sec. Graphs, maps, and diagrams are provided, and a number of accidents presumed to have involved wind shears are analyzed in detail.
