Description: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) have a significant impact on the patient’s health. The purpose of this PhD thesis was to analyse the impact of ADRs on the admissions to the emergency room, using the data obtained from the MEREAFaPS study. Elderly patients resulted the most exposed group to ADRs. Gastrointestinal disorders were the most commonly reported adverse reactions. Acetylsalicylic acid and warfarin were the most reported drugs. 17% of serious ADRs and 32% of the resulting deaths were classified as avoidable. Elderly age was found to be the main risk factor associated with ADRs. It is therefore important to underline the need for a more careful use of drugs in this group of patients.

Description: This volume carries out a study with the aim to assess any flaw in the care, hospital and local services in the event of disasters with medium to long-term implications. The method features a set of indicators applied to three parameters (suitability, efficiency and quality of the health services). The project’s aim is to identify the vulnerability of the hospitals in Florence in the event that the area of the Municipality and its surroundings are affected by a major emergency, with partial or complete damage to the continuity of care in hospitals. Furthermore, strategies and plans are proposed to maintain business continuity even in the event of such an emergency.

Description: The is a photographic repertoire accompanied by texts in Italian and English of the collection of drugs and herbal drugs of the historical collections of the departments of Pharmacology and Plant Biology of the University of Florence. The collection includes drugs of historical interest that are still important (quinine, digitalis, aspirin, etc.), in addition to others fallen into disuse due to low activity or high toxicity and is an interesting example of the variations in medical therapy during the 20th century. The photographic images highlight the high artistic quality of glass containers and labels and underline the museum, as well as scientific, value of the collections.

Description: Club drugs is aimed not only at sector specialists but also at a broader public. It addresses the highly topical issue of the drugs and substances of abuse commonly used in social venues and clubs for recreational or socialising purposes. Garbed in a discursive and communicative language, albeit thoroughly supported by scientific evidence, the results of the research on the most widespread "recreational" drugs - ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol, crack, cannabis and cocaine - are presented. The book takes its place within the debate on a social phenomenon in continual growth, replacing the Manicheism of prohibitionist and anti-prohibitionist positions with the most up-to-date results of scientific research.

Description: The histaminergic system is a pleiotropic system that commands general states of metabolism and consciousness, including learning and memorizing both pleasurable and aversive events. Brain histamine mediates the central effects of a signal molecule produced in the intestine, namely oleoylethanolamide (OEA). OEA is released by the enterocytes in response to high fat intake and reduces eating, by indirectly activating a subpopulation of histaminergic neurons. In her thesis, she explored other potential interactions between these two systems in the pursuit of unexplored neuronal mechanisms that may shed light on the mode of action of psychoactive agents and possibly lead to the development of new drugs.
