Beschreibung: An experimental version of a thinned illuminated buried-channel 512 x 320 pixel CCD with reduced amplifier input capacitance has been produced which is characterized by lower readout noise. Changes made to the amplifier are discussed, and readout noise measurements obtained by several different techniques are presented. The single energetic electron response of the CCD in the electron-bombarded mode and the single 5.9 keV X-ray pulse height distribution are reported. Results are also given on the dark current versus temperature and the spatial frequency response as a function of signal level.

Beschreibung: A CCD imaging array with a new virtual-phase technology that has been developed for use in a slow-scan imaging system for NASA's Galileo mission to Jupiter is described. Among its features are an absence of interlevel shorts, simplicity of fabrication, low dark current (less than 0.4 nA/sq cm), high full well, high quantum efficiency in the front side illumination mode, large dynamic range (greater than 5000), good charge transfer efficiency (0.99997), excellent linearity (0.2%), uniform pixel response (1%), and improved radiation hardness. It is noted that its operating voltages must be constrained to narrow windows to maintain good charge transfer efficiency and avoid the production of spurious and leakage charge.

Beschreibung: A soft X-ray/XUV imaging camera which uses a thinned, back-illuminated, all-buried channel RCA CCD for radiation sensing has been built and tested. The camera is a slow-scan device which makes possible frame integration if necessary. The detection characteristics of the device have been tested over the 15-1500 eV range. The response was linear with exposure up to 0.2-0.4 erg/sq cm; saturation occurred at greater exposures. Attention is given to attempts to resolve single photons with energies of 1.5 keV.

Beschreibung: Very-large area high-performance CCD image sensors with 800 x 800 pixel format have been successfully fabricated and operated on the basis of a three-level polysilicon gate technology. They are thinned to 8 microns over the entire 12.2 x 12.2 mm active area, and are used in the rear illumination mode. The light transfer characteristic has a gamma value of 1.000 + or - 0.002 over most of the dynamic range. Analysis of the noise behavior shows that the device SNR is shot-noise-limited over most of the dynamic range. Simple on-chip signal processing can be performed using an integration well to noiselessly collect signal charge from multiple pixels prior to reading out the charge. A UV-sensitive phosphor has been applied to the chip, yielding a device capable of imaging at wavelengths from the vacuum UV to the near IR.

Beschreibung: Astronomical photometry with CCDs will often involve relatively low signal levels (less than 1000 charge carriers per pixel), at which nonlinear effects sometimes become significant. These effects will probably play a role in the processing of Space Telescope data. The problem apparently arises because signal charges are not read out equally completely from all columns and all pixels. It is shown that, although a first-order correction can be made by subtracting a low-level flat field from all frames before conventional processing, higher accuracy can be achieved by modeling the response with a nonlinear function.

Beschreibung: A telescope spectrometer in the hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray region from 30 keV to 200 keV can provide significant information in investigations related to solar physics and planetary science. The present study is concerned with the preliminary design of such an instrument, taking into account a use of the Low Intensity X-ray Imaging Scope (Lixiscope). In the design of the considered telescope spectrometer, attention would have to be given to three major components, including the X-ray and gamma-ray input optics, an imaging detector-spectrometer, and an output processor. The preliminary results provided by the present study indicate that, in principle, a complete hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray telescope imaging spectrometer system using the Lixiscope is feasible. However, much work remains to be done with respect to the optimization and improvement of the system for future flight applications.

Beschreibung: The recent availability of large format CCD's with high quantum efficiency makes it possible to achieve significant advances in high dispersion astronomical spectroscopy. An echelle CCD combination excels or equals other techniques presently available, and offers the advantage of complete spectral coverage of several thousand Angstroms in a single exposure. Attention is given to experiments which were conducted with a CCD camera head and an echelle spectrograph on a 4-meter telescope. It was found possible to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 150/1 on a 13th magnitude star at 6000 A in a two-hour exposure at 0.16 A/pixel, limited primarily by photon statistics. For fainter objects, readout noise is the limiting factor in precision. For 20 electron rms readout noise, an S/N = 15/1 at 18th magnitude is expected, all other things being equal.

Beschreibung: The paper describes a CCD camera facility designed and built for testing and characterization of CCDs in response to single X-ray photons in the 1-10 keV energy range. Results from the frontside-illuminated Fairchild 211 and 221 area imagers are presented; high quantum efficiency over the 3-6 keV range was verified. In order to avoid the problem of charge spreading at the higher energies, deep-depleted CCDs for soft X-ray imaging have been constructed, and good response was obtained at 6 keV. The present results are a first step toward the demonstration of the CCD as an appropriate device for at least the central part of the focal plane of a large X-ray telescope, e.g., the proposed Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility.

Beschreibung: The paper describes the optical, mechanical, and electronic properties of the TI and RCA CCDs which have been applied to two-dimensional photometry and spectroscopy at Palomar. The drive, processing, and recording techniques are also discussed, and consideration is given to a focal conversion optical system, the Prime Focus Universal Extragalactic Instrument (PFUEI), which is used to more optimally match the Hale 5 meter plate scale. Calibration and data analysis are also examined.
