    Description: Saamentutkimus tänään is an introduction to the Sámi studies, i.e. the scientific study of the Sámi people. It gives many-faceted basic information of the Sámi people and presents up-to-date views of the disciplines related to the Sámi studies, e.g. history, archeology, genetics, linguistics, comparative religion, folkloristics, ethnology etc. It provides scientifically based knowledge of the Sámi during the prehistory and pre-Christianity, dealing with reindeer herding, handicraft, the Sámi languages, Sámi literature and art and civil right questions, including participation in the international movement of the indigenous people. All the authors are eminent experts of their scholarly fields, and all the articles have been revised by the Academic representatives of the Sámi themselves

    Description: The volume is a comprehensive handbook of oral history and memory studies in Finland. The Finnish research field has originally emerged at the collaborative intersection of history, folklore studies, and ethnology. Since then, this field has developed into vibrant multi- and cross-disciplinary arena characterized by a strong focus on methodological issues related to memory in culture and theoretical engagement with studies on narration and processes of remembering. The chapters of the book explore the perspectives on the production of memory-based knowledge in oral history interviews and collection campaigns of written reminiscences. Moreover, the book introduces versatile methodological approaches to the study of memory and memories, ranging from narrative to corpus analysis, and investigates the multiple media of remembrance from documentary film to museum exhibition. The chapters of the book also engage the field’s disciplinary position and interrogate the potentials and challenges related to the application of the methods of oral history research and the use of memory-based knowledge beyond academia in political, societal, and community-based projects.

    Description: "Health and healing have been central concerns throughout human history. Individuals and societies have devised multiple ways to health. Healing practices have often been linked to questions of knowledge, power, politics, and morals. The limits of acceptable healing have been contested by men and women, priests and doctors, elites and commoners, indigenous peoples and colonialists. Successful healers have sometimes been labeled as witches, quacks, or dangerous political agitators. The contributions in this volume concentrate on healing in global history with case studies about Finland, southern Asia and Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean and North America. They discuss medical pluralism and consider the arguments for and against individual healers and different healing systems. The authors focus on the popularity of medical systems, the appropriation and adoption of healing practices in cross-cultural contexts, and the prohibition of certain forms of healing. "

    Description: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. The case studies illustrate the wide array of languages, linguistic varieties and registers that the inhabitants and travellers used in their daily lives, the specific contexts in which certain languages were used, and the effects of these linguistic encounters at personal, social or institutional levels.

    Description: Ever since it gained independence, Greece has maintained a very special relationship with France, more so than with any other country in Europe. Periods of upheaval during the 20th century may have strained the bonds, but the deep connection between the two nations has never come into question. The staying power of this kinship invites us to examine what underpins their close relationship, how it has endured and regenerated, and to examine the ways in which the two countries have continuously interacted over the years. The resources for this study came from the extensive, sometimes little-known archives, in both Athens and Paris, and brought together archivists and historians in a joint effort to go beyond the usual clichés of Philhellenism and Francophilia.

    Description: Les affaires du corps s’opposent aux affaires de l’esprit, le côté aliments au côté croyance. Ce sont là des manières différentes d’exprimer un clivage fondamental de l’existence et de l’univers tels qu’ils sont perçus par les Rapas. Essentiellement, c’est la distinction entre le profane et le sacré. En d’autres termes, les Rapas incluent dans le « coté nourriture » pae ma’a ou dans le « côté corps » pae tino ces aspects de la vie que nous avons coutume d’appeler économiques, sociaux ou politiques. La religion et la morale appartiennent au « côté esprit », pae varua ou au « côté croyance », paea fa’aro’o. Ce livre traite du « côté corps » de l’existence à Rapa. J’ai cherché d’une part à décrire l’économie, la société et la vie politique telles qu’elles me sont apparues au cours d’un séjour d’une année en 1964. J’ai organisé ces données de manière à les rendre intelligibles aux lecteurs de chez nous ; cependant j’essaierai, dans la mesure du possible, de montrer en quoi les diverses coutumes, croyances et organisations qui composent le « côté nourriture » sont signifiantes pour les Rapas. En cela nous suivons les préceptes de Malinowski : « Notre objectif est de saisir le point de vue de l’indigène, sa relation avec la vie, de comprendre sa vision de son monde ». C’est Malinowski lui-même qui souligne.

    Description: Herbes de cures alliées aux cycles saisonniers, feuilles amères, fleurs « qui font transpirer », « purges » non laxatives, salades ramassées dans les friches, qui nettoient des « crasses » de l'hiver, les dépuratifs ne séparent pas l'aliment du remède, s'adressent davantage à des « états du corps » qu'à des maladies précises. Mais où sont ici les limites de la médecine populaire ? Ne trouve-t-on pas aussi des dizaines de remèdes dépuratifs en pharmacie ? Archaïsme médical déjà combattu voici deux siècles, dès l'apparition du terme, le « dépuratif », entendu à la fois sur les modes botanique, historique et symbolique, suscite de multiples échos. Dans nos contrées, ne conserverait-il pas trace au cours des temps d'une rencontre particulière avec la plante-remède, d'une perception et d'un usage du monde où nos politiques de santé pourraient trouver à réfléchir ? Ce livre montre l'intérêt d'une analyse approfondie de cette « médecine populaire par les plantes », bien mal connue en dépit des célébrations actuelles. C'est à partir de sa passion de naturaliste que Pierre Lieutaghi en est venu aux savoirs traditionnels. Chemin du végétal vers l'homme, inhabituel pour les anthropologues mais qui lui a permis de retrouver le fil des profonds rapports entre les hommes, les plantes et le cosmos.

    Description: Depuis les années 1970, grandir dans une famille recomposée concerne un nombre croissant d’individus. Des liens inédits unissent beaux-parents et beaux-enfants, demi et « quasi » frères et sœurs, dans une ordonnance différente des lieux et des temps de la vie familiale. Apparaissent de nouvelles manières de vivre et de penser les liens de famille, qui interrogent nos repères traditionnels. Que signifie être père ou mère, beau-père ou belle-mère dans les familles recomposées ? Est-ce donner la vie, donner son nom et ses biens, nourrir et élever un enfant et le chérir, l’adopter ? Que signifie être frère ou sœur ? Avoir eu les mêmes parents biologiques, avoir partagé son enfance dans un même lieu ? Des relations amoureuses et sexuelles entre « quasi » frères et sœurs sont-elles licites ? C’est à ces questions que tente de répondre ce livre à travers l’exploration ethnographique d’une trentaine d’histoires familiales, où le point de vue des « beaux-enfants », devenus adultes, constitue le principal éclairage. A partir de leurs récits, mis en perspective par le recours à l’histoire et à l’anthropologie, Agnès Martial met au jour l’incertitude des termes, des rôles et des statuts qui constituent la trame familiale recomposée dans notre société. En interrogeant les relations entre générations, souvent perturbées par la séparation du couple parental et la notion d’inceste telle qu’elle émerge des pratiques, des discours et du droit, son analyse des familles recomposées permet de mieux comprendre le contenu des relations de filiation, de germanité et d’alliance dans les sociétés occidentales contemporaines.
